“and I was not good with the plans because no one could’ve planned it like this. but then--the same, you might say, is true of whoever is responsible for history"
After moving to Seattle I dated a girl whose uncle was friends with SJB and had some of his tapes stored away. I haven't seen that girl in years, but I ofter wonder what happened to those tapes, and what was on them.
Short novels THE WRAITH and HERMIONE and poetry collection CHOKING ON SIXTH can be had from select used bookstores. THE WRAITH and CHOKING were written while Jesse was in the full flower of his alcoholism, although he once wrote me that the final pages of THE WRAITH were composed during the initial stages of his long sobriety period from about 1982 through early 1991. THE WRAITH and CHOKING are some of his finest work. HERMIONE cuts it, too, but obviously written in the wake of THE WRAITH.
If you're a fan of Jesse you should know a feature documentary on him will be released in 2010. There is a fanpage on Facebook - become a fan to keep in the loop on screenings.
Search: "I AM SECRETLY AN IMPORTANT MAN" on facebook.
The film is directed by Pete Sillen (co-director of BENJAMIN SMOKE).
Brilliant, one of the few spoken word recordings that dares evoke Dead City Radio. This man had the potential to be Burroughs successor, shame he left too soon.
album is called Prison...on Sub Pop records...books of poetry is from Left Bank Books in Seattle, WA as well as Zero Hour Press...all a google search away I imagine
Fantastic! Thanks for doing this. "No No Man (Part 1) is another great piece that should be put to visuals. I glad I found this today. jacobcmills did another awesome video for Bernstein's "This Clouded Heart."
Hate to be obvious but am I the only one who first was struck by the oddly hypnotic nasal tone of SJB (I mean over a period of years)and later really 'got' the weight of the poetry?'green and covered with fingers'-just so amazing.
