Hey Mike, do you like it better when Harper rubs your belly or scratch's you behind your ears? For a lap dog, you are heck of a hypocrite. Enjoy your senate pension, you really earned my tax dollars.
Mike Duffy interviews are not worth the film they were recorded on. The senate needs reform, YES, but at a minimum Canadians got rid of a biased reporter who was suppose to help inform us about Politics in our country. Good-Bye Duffy.
if dion gets fired ill be like 100% happy, but now if the NDP and the liberals combines there votes Dion might be Prime Minister T.T but then dion wants Quebec to become an indepent country and so we don't have to learn French if Quebec becomes an indepent country
Dion actually seems like a really nice guy to tell you the truth, im not sure why all these other guys on this vid are calling him a douche for.....I'd rather vote for a guy who has trouble in an interview than a guy who has trouble governing.
I actually didn't like him to start with, but now if you think about it. I think it would make a great Prime Minister if he was given the chance. He would definitely change the image of Canada as a friendly country on the world stage.
the 3 stooges of parliament hill..what noble characters lmao..layton would sell his own mother to get power, Dion is weak & liberals are notorious for wasting/stealing tax $ & is about to get thrown out of his own party, Duseppe is just out for Quebec...yeah what a bunch of winners to lead Canada, they couldn't lead a dog around for god sakes...the only ones supporting them are the ones looking for hand outs ie UNION MEMBERS...all about self interest & not the majority of the ppl in Canada
Never min dion !!! I think this guy has an impairment....LOL..(Pathetic)..i will vote for stompin tom, before i vote ever again for any of these clowns,,,,
LOL!!! That was a funny edit!!! Anyways, not once did Dion mention protecting the Canadian people's democratic will when it comes to who they voted. All he cares about is trying to help the corporate friends the Liberals have made while in power for the longest of times over the last 35 years. Throw the NDP into that as well as they re trying to power grab AND help out their connections with the auto sector. These clowns are destroying our country,it's time all Canadians realize this.
What a complete joke. Stephan Dion should have never been put in a position that he could never hope to capture in a million years. He's the biggest joke in the Canadian government EVER gtfo Dion.
This idiot should go back to France. After suffering through the Chretien frog era, it is time to put a stop to any French people being leaders of Canada.
Hello Mrlevy139 - You are entitled to your opinion, just like we all are. If you feel Mr Dion has expressed signs of great intelligence in his attempts to overthrow an elected government "then you are entitled to that thought". I would not criticize your decision. I don't like Harper, but Dion has become an absolute joke to all Canadians, even to members of the Liberal party. I think you know that is true "right"?
"A Liberal MP hinted Thursday that a Grit-NDP coalition to bring down the government might not last into the New Year, following the announcement that Parliament had been suspended until January.
"I cannot see it holding together," Liberal MP Jim Karygiannis told CTV's Rosemary Thompson.
Dion is a great leader, probably the greatest we have seen in a long time! A man who is called upon as a leader of a party is not alway honest and decent, but certainly intelligent, Dion was all of these!
Language is a problem in Canada period. As was seen during the election, Dion's inability to express himself properly to English speaking voters cost his party 24 seats in the House of Commons. Part of this can be explained by his unpopular "Green Shift" but even the most brainwashed of Liberal Supporters have to admit that a good portion of why the Liberals lost was due to Dion. The fact that he holds a French passport and was near incomprehensible on many occasions was why he lost.
The millions the Conservatives spent in ads attacking Dion, in heavy airplay long before the election started, also were a factor in Dion's election loses. There was a lot of misunderstanding about the "Green shift". Harper called it a tax increase, when in fact it was not. Also with the crisis in the world economy, Harper cleverly suggested the Liberal plans were risky experiments, and now was the time to stay the course. Saying the crisis in Canada has not been as bad as in the U.S.
It IS a tax grab. Plain and simple. Wealth redistribution. Not to mention it has a stolen name that the Liberals STILL haven't paid the legal costs over...
What hurt Dion the most is the Liberal party and Dion himself. He kept throwing around Chretien's name, and Liberal insiders kept leaking information.
No, it's a tax shift. The Liberals actually planned to lower income taxes. You say "wealth redistribution" like it's a dirty or something, lol. This isn't the U.S., and the Conservatives have moved more to the centre. They've spent more than the Liberals did. Look at how they wittled away at the surplus the Liberals left them, on new spending.
Yes, yes little one. They would cut taxes, and increase services, build the economy, clean the environment, and end child poverty!
You CAN'T be THAT delusional to believe ANY of that crap. The Liberals ALWAYS promise to cut taxes but they only cut services while raising taxes...
The surplus? Oh, that's a product of CUTTING SERVICES and TRANSFER PAYMENTS. In essence, the debt is still there, just the provinces and cities pay for it...
I'm not sure how much language had to do with it. Remember Jean Cretien had a strong accent, but he was one of our the most successful prime ministers in the 1990s. What year did he finally step down? I hope this wasn't a factor with Dion. Harper speaks not so great French. He was close to doing very well in Quebec, before people saw some of his values were different: on arts and culture and young offenders specifically. I'd like to think bigotry either way, doesn't enter into it.
Without sounding too cliché, that was 1993, this is now. There were other factors surrounding Chretien's election as PM. Chretien also had a disability that would (and did) make taking him to task for his language troubles a lot more challenging (ask Kim Campbell about that). Anyway, putting aside my own personal distaste for language laws and forced bilingualism in the government, my bilingual and french friends all agree with me that Dion simply didn't appeal to English speaking voters.
Chretien's disability, was really another issue, I feel. Yes, Kim Campbell's campaign people produced an ad which made fun of it, and that destroyed the PC's in the 1993 election. However, Chretien went on to win majority governments long after that. Like I said, I HOPE, English Canada didn't discriminate against Dion because of his accent. That would be a sad comment on Canadians in general. There were many other factors at play in this election.
I think it's more than just an accent, he was asked one question and gave an answer that had nothing to do with it, the 30/50 plan he mentioned was the Liberals plan to deal with homelessness (that's what I thought at least). What really gets me is that people get very self righteous when anglos suggest that Dion doesn't speak english well enough to be PM. In order for us lowly unilingual people (french and english) to get a crappy clerical government job we need to be bilingual and take
multiple tests to prove our proficiency. Apparently these same standards don't apply to the most important job in the country. Dion is somehow exempt from the oppressive language laws that the rest of us deal with daily. I really hate double standards and people who give Dion a pass on this issue are obviously bilingual themselves or don't live in Ottawa where not speaking french excludes you from a good 50% of the jobs.
The main argument this thread pertains to, hasn't any validity now that Dion is no longer an option. I do, however, take great exception to the continuous fuel being poured on the French/English prejudice plaguing this country.
I, ALSO, live in Ottawa, have had highly educated family struggle to obtain government employment due to their lack of bilingualism, am totally unilingual myself (thanks to our crumby core French programs throughout school), have grown up in a family owning a small
business in a trade where the double-standard between Ontario and Quebec cripples business opportunity on this side. I'm not pretending that the language requirements, particularly in eastern Ontario, haven't been a difficult obstacle for namy. I know that the most qualified people for the "bilingual only" jobs are not doing them but by us discarding a potentially brilliant leader based on his lack of proficiency in both languages is not just doing the very thing that we feel is so unfair but
possibly making a detrimental decision for our country.
There may be a lot of reasons Dion shouldn't be the leader of our country but I don't see why the fact that he is primarily French should be one of them.
I don't know what to say. The core french programs were certainly a let down, I received enrichment french courses from about grade 5 - 9 and was one of the stronger french speakers by the time I started in high school (and honestly my french was not good at all). I didn't like how it was basically put forward as this very optional thing in English public school.
Only one year of french was mandatory in high school and it could be "applied french" which was laughable. Why don't they make it mandatory for all 4 years. I feel duped really. My frustration at being asked my ethnicity on a government job application is also exacerbated by seeing both my uncles and my step father being shuffled aside for promotions in the government by people named Guillaume and Jean Pierre. Who does this country really belong to anymore?
I see you and your family being ripped off just like mine, but the difference is that you're rolling over and begging for more, I say enough of this shit. For whatever reason, these issues aren't allowed to be discussed in polite society but enough. Anglos are afraid of being called the dreaded "bigot" word and turtle up like cowards while their country is stolen from them right in front of their faces. It's pathetic. I'm not a bigot because I don't think french people are inferior, I'm bloody
well frightened of them and the power they wield in every level of government. The bilingual "executive class" in Canada will continue to strut around with their noses in the air until their are some fundamental changes made to several hugely unfair policies in Canada. Wake up and get on the right side for fuck's sake,
I, just, don't see how you can take a federal election like this and turn it into a French/English battleground.
I think we all would like to know why this double standard exists, particularly since so many lost their lives in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham to prevent such an issue from occurring. I am not arguing that the issues you are writing about are very important to many Canadians but anyone can see that NONE of these candidates have these issues on their priority list, not even
our Conservative friend from out west. It hasn't even been a discussed issue throughtout the entire campaign. So, why are so many Canadians basing their vote on this very issue and making Dion the villain?
Stephane Dion is not responsible for any of these issues. In fact, Dion, much like Pierre Trudeau, is against the idea of Quebec sovereignty. He was the only candidate, from what I saw, during the French debate, who refused to pander to the people of Quebec to win votes. Being French
There is a difference between dealing with these issues in a situation where results can be obtained and simply lashing out at people because they speak French. How is suggesting that the Liberal party elect an Anglophone instead of a Francophone to represent them in the future any different than suggesting that the Liberal party should elect a man instead of a woman to represent them in the future. It is absolutely prejudice.
long enough to vote for the best candidate to run our country and put it back on when we have a leader to, once again, complain to about the existing double standard.
You are quite right that the topic got changed. All I was saying in my original posts waaaaay back before this turned into English V French 2008 is that MANY MANY Canadians, RIGHTLY or WRONGLY voted based on Dion's linguistic handicap. Your argument is that this is wrong and I accept that. Why couldn't the Liberal higher ups see that Harper and the Cons would latch on to this and exploit it for all his worth? In the end I can't really blame Dion for the Liberals terrible showing in the last
election. I think I mentioned it in a previous comment on this video as well, Dion's inability to sway anglo (and francophone) Canadians was one part of the problem, read: one part. His weak showing in the english debate, his pushing of an unpopular green agenda and his own party's history of letting Harper have his way in parliament came back to haunt him in both Ontario and Quebec. Really the fault has to lie with the upper tier of the Liberal party, the background strategists and intellectual
forces that failed in every measure in predicting Canadian opinion and how to react to Harper. I still don't feel like Ignatieff will do any better because the core structure of the Liberal party is still intact and they, in my mind, have completely lost touch with what actual Canadians think. Anyway, I've enjoyed ranting and venting on youtube but this character count is infuriating. Any suggestion for a good canadian public political forum?
I only take issue with ONE PART of your argument, the rest all seems very reasonable.
Dion clearly had a tremendous amount of difficulty presenting his green shift plan in a manner that people were able to understand, he was viewed as weak in the English debate, and his quiet opposition didn't help him appear very challenging or menacing as a federal leader in the least.
I don't have a problem with any of this. I amd simply questioning the intelligence of the Canadians out
there who went out and voted against Stephane Dion, for no other reason, other than that he is French.
Sometimes people will cut off their nose to spite their face and I wish these people wouldn't vote.
I don't have any useful suggestions for a good Canadian public political forum for you but if they make one, which would be a fantastic idea, I imagine I will see you there.
Until then, thanks for the discussion, it's been fun!
It wasn't just Dion. It's the Liberal party itself. Look at where it still holds seats... Toronto, Vancouver, parts of Montreal, and parts of the Maritimes.
The Liberal party itself has never purged the evil ghost of Chretien, and to make matters worse, they have shifted too far to the left.
Canadians as a whole did not engage in the election. The people of Qubec were the only group in Canada to realize what is "really" going on. Kudo's to them for standing up for Canada. Thank You Bloc supporters you took the right action required. Come on Canadians get informed you have only one country and the people of Qubec are correct on this issue.
This video is swarming with Liberals and Dion supporters. How many excuses can you make for this guy? He has a hearing problem, he speaks English better than native English speakers (!?!), he didn't understand the question, he's a just a simpleton leave him alone... it goes on and on. Duceppe spoke better English than Dion, please choose an Anglophone leader next time.
Yes, this clip is a nightmare, in fact, most of Dion's limelight experience has been. However, I'd like to point out that Canada has two official languages. It's not his hearing impairment that hinders him as much as being forced to campaign in english because of our inability to understand both languages. It is unacceptable to suggest a party shouldn't choose a leader based on their mother tongue.
Mike Duffy is a stupid fat wanker and he's trying to sound all funny and sarcastic maybe he should learn peoples names properly before he expects a reply to one of his gay unfunny questions otherwise he's going to get dead air and confused looks on his joke of a tv show.
Mr. Murphy is not the best interviewer on television. I concede that point. That notwithstanding the question was understandable. This country subtly demands that its prime ministers be fluently bilingual. Mr. Dion is not. Celine Dion is!
Critics of Dion are likely oblivious to how bastardized the English language has become. Ex:
I dont understand what your talking about.
I dont understand what youre talking about.
Your is not a contraction for you are however that is how many English speaking Canadians would say it. Dion understands proper English (the English you were taught in school but have long forgotten). We can only be critical of Dions inability to understand in light of the interviewers grammatical error.
I like Dion, who's clearly a very decent man, but he neither knows anything about the economy nor does he have adequate command of english to make himself understood to the majority of can. He's been in Ottawa since 1996 since he brought down the excellent Clarity Act. Couldn't he have improved his english in 12 years on the Hill?? Harper may be a nasty prick, but he's better qualified to lead at this point.
I don't know who was dumber .....Stephan Dion or Geoff Regan..hahaha. Could they have been acting? hahah ....like all politicians do!!! hahaaha. Can't wait til voting day.....GO NDP!!!!!
I think Mike Duffy tells it like it is. The real issue is that Dion panicks when he gets a tough question. Just like when Ignatief was questioning him during the leaders debate. To say it was because of a hearing problem is an insult to the hearing impaired. The question was repeated to him three times and the man still did not understand. Nice try Liberals.
This video doesn't show the outtakes. For those who attempt to defend this bumbling buffoon by blaming the journalist I say, the question being asked repeatedly is WHAT WOULD YOU DO? it doesn't matter when, today tomorrow,2 yrs ago. He does not now what he would do,30 day plan blahblahblah consult blahblahblah. Vote Liberal, GIVE YOR HEAD A SHAKE ONTARIO! My 2cents!
Vote Dion-or-Harper in first-past-the-post electoral election system-this is a big lie.
Where does the Canadian voter directly pick their leader? Where does the Canadian directly pick their Senator. Where does Canadians vote on important national referendums except once every decade or so. Where is Proportional Representation Democracy?
Canada has some explaining to do if you want people to particiapte in fair vote country.
Whoever posted this is off their nut. I saw no "meltdown", just more journalists getting in the way of the election. Quit wasting our time! I'm voting Liberal mainly because of the conservatives complete lack of ethics, and this is probably another example of that.
Bet the Liberals wish now they'd voted for Ignatiff to lead them. Didn't any of them see this coming? They'll blame anyone but themselves when their incompetence is exposed. Get power at all costs, keep power at all costs. Say and do anything to get elected. That's a Liberal.
Dion never answered the questioned. Tell me What should Dion have done for the economy that Harper hasn't done? Canada has one of the best economies in the world. In September, thousands of jobs were created in the manufacturing sector.
The poor Liberal MP has a point here. Mike Duffy maybe recognized in MEDIA world but he is not god and called the lib MP the name James at 1:58 minutes. Everyone make mistakes.
Where is Kim Campbell today because of her political stunt (done almost exactly the same as CTV)? What am I talking about you wonder? No wonder you failed in history and grammar. You haven't a fucking clue.
You're blaming the CTV for Dion flubbing this up?? Darcy, give it a rest. Swallow it like a man and lets move on....Dion completely screwed the pooch and you're brining up 1993??? Ouch my man.
Guess what: Prime Ministers will face bad questions. They must be prepared to answer and move forward. Dion came across as solid as a piece of cooked spaghetti. How pathetic: blame the journalist!!!!
The only thing that made sense in this video was Dion's reaction. What a stupid question. Dion was trying to give a thoughtful answer. All this does is expose how stupid TV journalists are.
The interviewer asks THREE different questions.. pay close attention...
1)"If you were Prime Minister now..."
2)"If you're the Prime Minister right now..."
3)"If you hypothetically are Prime Minister today..."
The very 1st question is incorrect, and this is what confused Dion. It should have been asked... "If you were the Prime Minister, what would you have done about the economy and the financial crisis?"
That is So weak Darcy....poor Dion is asked the same question 3 different times with a few different words. The reporter was trying to get it through Dion's thick skull....your argument has no validity whatsoever.
The interviewer asks at least THREE different questions.. pay close attention...
1)"If you were Prime Minister now..."
2)"If you're the Prime Minister right now..."
3)"If you hypothetically were Prime Minister today..."
The 1st and 3rd questions are grammarically incorrect. We need captioning to illustrate these points, and this is what confused Dion. It should have been asked... "If you were the Prime Minister, what would you have done about the economy and the financial crisis?"
ALL ENGLISH SPEAKERS PERFECTLY UNDERSTOOD THE QUESTION. It seems like Celine and you are the only 2 that don't and need to try and spin this.
The most pathetic interview I've ever seen in my life. He has ear problems???? Oh puhhhllleease. I say Dion has head issues and is in no way fit to be the Prime Minister. Keep trying to spin this and it will just stay in the cycle long enough for it to be top of mind for everyone Tuesday. Please keep up your pathetic attempt to spin!!!
The problem with the English language is that YOU DON'T FUCKING UNDERSTAND HOW TO SPEAK THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. CTV have supposedly professional journalists, who are supposed to be intelligent enough to ask a question PROPERLY. The fact that they didn't was a deliberate attempt to make him look foolish. Just like Kim Campbell did to Chretien. Check your history books, sucks to FAIL doesn't it? jerk.
So you expect Canadians to feel some sympathy for Dion because he doesn't understand ENGLISH?? Do you think when Dion is our negotiating and representing us on the international scene that everything is going to be spoken in perfect English??? Your arguements are so weak Darcy....go back to sucking for the Leafs with your wimpish goatee.
Hmm, where is the media condemning this fools poor command of the english language? They ran over every western-based candidate for not being great at french (Stock Day) or squeaky like a school teacher (Preston Manning)...or being an Albertan? This moron should be front and centre BEFORE the election!
I am not insulting his intelligence....he is an academic ( and academics by nature make very poor politicians). I am questioning his ability to understand English. As proven by the election, the electorate agreed that Dion was an unacceptable leader for Canada. Really no surprise there.
Dion was a nice guy, not a leader. He is a magnificent economist.

All he cares about is trying to help the corporate friends the Liberals have made while in power for the longest of times over the last 35 years. Throw the NDP into that as well as they re trying to power grab AND help out their connections with the auto sector. These clowns are destroying our country,it's time all Canadians realize this.

I'm not Canadian, so can someone please tell me how big of a problem language was in the election for the electorate?
LeaF2277 3 years ago
Language is a problem in Canada period. As was seen during the election, Dion's inability to express himself properly to English speaking voters cost his party 24 seats in the House of Commons. Part of this can be explained by his unpopular "Green Shift" but even the most brainwashed of Liberal Supporters have to admit that a good portion of why the Liberals lost was due to Dion. The fact that he holds a French passport and was near incomprehensible on many occasions was why he lost.
marijumanji 3 years ago
The millions the Conservatives spent in ads attacking Dion, in heavy airplay long before the election started, also were a factor in Dion's election loses. There was a lot of misunderstanding about the "Green shift". Harper called it a tax increase, when in fact it was not. Also with the crisis in the world economy, Harper cleverly suggested the Liberal plans were risky experiments, and now was the time to stay the course. Saying the crisis in Canada has not been as bad as in the U.S.
dexterxyz 3 years ago 3
It IS a tax grab. Plain and simple. Wealth redistribution. Not to mention it has a stolen name that the Liberals STILL haven't paid the legal costs over...
What hurt Dion the most is the Liberal party and Dion himself. He kept throwing around Chretien's name, and Liberal insiders kept leaking information.
PhilipJFry72 3 years ago
No, it's a tax shift. The Liberals actually planned to lower income taxes. You say "wealth redistribution" like it's a dirty or something, lol. This isn't the U.S., and the Conservatives have moved more to the centre. They've spent more than the Liberals did. Look at how they wittled away at the surplus the Liberals left them, on new spending.
dexterxyz 3 years ago
blah blah blah "tax shift"
Yes, yes little one. They would cut taxes, and increase services, build the economy, clean the environment, and end child poverty!
You CAN'T be THAT delusional to believe ANY of that crap. The Liberals ALWAYS promise to cut taxes but they only cut services while raising taxes...
The surplus? Oh, that's a product of CUTTING SERVICES and TRANSFER PAYMENTS. In essence, the debt is still there, just the provinces and cities pay for it...
PhilipJFry72 3 years ago
I'm not sure how much language had to do with it. Remember Jean Cretien had a strong accent, but he was one of our the most successful prime ministers in the 1990s. What year did he finally step down? I hope this wasn't a factor with Dion. Harper speaks not so great French. He was close to doing very well in Quebec, before people saw some of his values were different: on arts and culture and young offenders specifically. I'd like to think bigotry either way, doesn't enter into it.
dexterxyz 3 years ago
Without sounding too cliché, that was 1993, this is now. There were other factors surrounding Chretien's election as PM. Chretien also had a disability that would (and did) make taking him to task for his language troubles a lot more challenging (ask Kim Campbell about that). Anyway, putting aside my own personal distaste for language laws and forced bilingualism in the government, my bilingual and french friends all agree with me that Dion simply didn't appeal to English speaking voters.
marijumanji 3 years ago
Chretien's disability, was really another issue, I feel. Yes, Kim Campbell's campaign people produced an ad which made fun of it, and that destroyed the PC's in the 1993 election. However, Chretien went on to win majority governments long after that. Like I said, I HOPE, English Canada didn't discriminate against Dion because of his accent. That would be a sad comment on Canadians in general. There were many other factors at play in this election.
dexterxyz 3 years ago
Chretien won because the Conservatives split into two parties.
Chretien won because he painted Stockwell Day as someone who believed that dinosaurs and humans were alive a few thousand years ago.
Chretien won because he promised one thing to get elected and then reneged on EVERY promise.
Dion lost because of Chretien's legacy and the Liberals will need ten years to purge that cancer.
Dion is, btw, a Chretienite, and people haven't forgotten.
PhilipJFry72 3 years ago
I think it's more than just an accent, he was asked one question and gave an answer that had nothing to do with it, the 30/50 plan he mentioned was the Liberals plan to deal with homelessness (that's what I thought at least). What really gets me is that people get very self righteous when anglos suggest that Dion doesn't speak english well enough to be PM. In order for us lowly unilingual people (french and english) to get a crappy clerical government job we need to be bilingual and take
marijumanji 3 years ago 2
multiple tests to prove our proficiency. Apparently these same standards don't apply to the most important job in the country. Dion is somehow exempt from the oppressive language laws that the rest of us deal with daily. I really hate double standards and people who give Dion a pass on this issue are obviously bilingual themselves or don't live in Ottawa where not speaking french excludes you from a good 50% of the jobs.
marijumanji 3 years ago 2

I know that the most qualified people for the "bilingual only" jobs are not doing them but by us discarding a potentially brilliant leader based on his lack of proficiency in both languages is not just doing the very thing that we feel is so unfair but
KeplerNanouk 3 years ago
possibly making a detrimental decision for our country.
There may be a lot of reasons Dion shouldn't be the leader of our country but I don't see why the fact that he is primarily French should be one of them.
KeplerNanouk 3 years ago
I don't know what to say. The core french programs were certainly a let down, I received enrichment french courses from about grade 5 - 9 and was one of the stronger french speakers by the time I started in high school (and honestly my french was not good at all). I didn't like how it was basically put forward as this very optional thing in English public school.
marijumanji 3 years ago
Only one year of french was mandatory in high school and it could be "applied french" which was laughable. Why don't they make it mandatory for all 4 years. I feel duped really. My frustration at being asked my ethnicity on a government job application is also exacerbated by seeing both my uncles and my step father being shuffled aside for promotions in the government by people named Guillaume and Jean Pierre. Who does this country really belong to anymore?
marijumanji 3 years ago
I see you and your family being ripped off just like mine, but the difference is that you're rolling over and begging for more, I say enough of this shit. For whatever reason, these issues aren't allowed to be discussed in polite society but enough. Anglos are afraid of being called the dreaded "bigot" word and turtle up like cowards while their country is stolen from them right in front of their faces. It's pathetic. I'm not a bigot because I don't think french people are inferior, I'm bloody
marijumanji 3 years ago
well frightened of them and the power they wield in every level of government. The bilingual "executive class" in Canada will continue to strut around with their noses in the air until their are some fundamental changes made to several hugely unfair policies in Canada. Wake up and get on the right side for fuck's sake,
marijumanji 3 years ago
I, just, don't see how you can take a federal election like this and turn it into a French/English battleground.
I think we all would like to know why this double standard exists, particularly since so many lost their lives in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham to prevent such an issue from occurring. I am not arguing that the issues you are writing about are very important to many Canadians but anyone can see that NONE of these candidates have these issues on their priority list, not even
KeplerNanouk 3 years ago
our Conservative friend from out west.
KeplerNanouk 3 years ago
doesn't change this.
So, why not get the chip off our shoulder
KeplerNanouk 3 years ago
long enough to vote for the best candidate to run our country and put it back on when we have a leader to, once again, complain to about the existing double standard.
KeplerNanouk 3 years ago
You are quite right that the topic got changed. All I was saying in my original posts waaaaay back before this turned into English V French 2008 is that MANY MANY Canadians, RIGHTLY or WRONGLY voted based on Dion's linguistic handicap. Your argument is that this is wrong and I accept that. Why couldn't the Liberal higher ups see that Harper and the Cons would latch on to this and exploit it for all his worth? In the end I can't really blame Dion for the Liberals terrible showing in the last
marijumanji 3 years ago

Anyway, I've enjoyed ranting and venting on youtube but this character count is infuriating. Any suggestion for a good canadian public political forum?
marijumanji 3 years ago
Last One...
I amd simply questioning the intelligence of the Canadians out
KeplerNanouk 3 years ago
there who went out and voted against Stephane Dion, for no other reason, other than that he is French.
KeplerNanouk 3 years ago
It wasn't just Dion. It's the Liberal party itself. Look at where it still holds seats... Toronto, Vancouver, parts of Montreal, and parts of the Maritimes.
The Liberal party itself has never purged the evil ghost of Chretien, and to make matters worse, they have shifted too far to the left.
People are asking what the Liberals stand for.

marijumanji 3 years ago
Yes, this clip is a nightmare, in fact, most of Dion's limelight experience has been. However, I'd like to point out that Canada has two official languages. It's not his hearing impairment that hinders him as much as being forced to campaign in english because of our inability to understand both languages. It is unacceptable to suggest a party shouldn't choose a leader based on their mother tongue.

Critics of Dion are likely oblivious to how bastardized the English language has become. Ex:

I dont understand what youre talking about.
Your is not a contraction for you are however that is how many English speaking Canadians would say it. Dion understands proper English (the English you were taught in school but have long forgotten). We can only be critical of Dions inability to understand in light of the interviewers grammatical error.

The problem with the English language is that YOU DON'T FUCKING UNDERSTAND HOW TO SPEAK THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. I am not insulting his intelligence....he is an academic ( and academics by nature make very poor politicians). I am questioning his ability to understand English. As proven by the election, the electorate agreed that Dion was an unacceptable leader for Canada. Really no surprise there.
