  • And their damned self-sustainable utopia...

  • 0:04 Damn Hippies...

  • im 16 and im mezmorized every time i watch! this movie is such an awesome prespective, and it means alot to me!

  • I recall going to see Godspell when I was 13,with a school party.I was mesmerised, the one time I actually concentrated on something. And this was back in the '70s when it was considered 'girly' for a young teen boy to be interested in any musical production, lol. We'd come down from 't'north' to London to see it & had the best time, even getting to go up on stage during the interval to meet the London cast.I treasured my copy of the original cast on vinyl but it's all scratched & worn now.

  • 1971 how different it was

  • I sing this song in the shower all the time !

  • Still and always will be inspiring and I hate to differ with bxbuff, but some people still live that way, all with reality setting the stage and providing the foundations.

  • You would think that they would try and keep "Godspell" videos up on YT, since the play, "Godspell," is being being rehearsed for a revival on Broadway right now (Oct., 2011).

For those too young to remember, during those tumultuous 1960s, there were actually young people who thought that they could live, 'day by day,' like the characters in the movie: wearing colorful clothes and painting vacant buildings. Unfortunately, they found out it couldn't be done when reality set it.

  • I inherited the album Godspell from me Mum. :-D

  • I love this joyful song!!!

  • emmm question i posted some clips from godspell and all of them got blocked for copyright wtf how does this clip pass through youtube. its out of order...

  • this is my mom(not joking)

  • I like the song.

  • iam doing this musical , in my drama class :D

  • @shaymeg1 me too :D

  • Classic and reminescent song......

  • Me gustaría conocer si existe la pelicula Godspell de 1973 que forma parte de este video. Me encantaria comprarla. Gracias por la ayuda.

  • Maravilloso. Nos hace hace acercar al Señor desde una perspectiva moderna. Gracias: Es un buen regalo.

  • Learned this in Catholic school. Didn't realize it came from this hippie movie.

  • @turbotime1964 lol me too

  • @kblacklabel RIP Godspell cast members; David Haskell, Lynne Thigpen, Merrell Jackson, and Jeffrey Mylett - thank you for sharing your talents with us

  • alot of the times ive gotten the dvds of this i worn it out 2 timz lol i luv this to death litterally and im only 12. and 11 of these pple dnt luv The Lord Jesus as much as we do!!!

  • alot of the times ive gotten the dvds of this i worn it out 2 timz lol i luv this to death litterally and im only 12

  • this is the one song that drove my mom crazy cause i guess they sang it like every sunday at the church she went to in the 70's. i guess she just got tired of it but i like it.

  • check out my stuff iacmusic.com "ruminate" and "politics of exclusion""..

  • lindo

  • People say they want a remake of this movie. Why? Its perfect as it is now. Seeing Jesus in an Afro, funny makeup, a superman shirt, and clown shoes is a great way to show children how great he is. I wouldn't change it for the world

  • my god i told you all his tounge flashes a fork at about 3:16 in the Video (i am sure someone alterd it and did not appear in the original film) but again its there at the very end look carefully as robin comes up behind mim and toi his right and he turns his head, at the end watch it for yourself just dont dismiss.

  • @bassdoggy1 I think the 70s were pretty cool or groovy. I was born in 1989, I'm an 80s child; I'm as 1980s as high top sneakers and hair metal and st elmos fire; but I've read and seen alot about and caught up with the 70s so to speak and it's pretty cool; ironically, my mom lived through the 70s, and most of the pop culture references that I talk about, she's never even heard of it before. Not bad for an 80s child, huh?

  • @thehoosierfortheUK ... You were born the same year as my son...I was a teen in the 70's, it was ok I guess.. I always wished I were a teen in the 50's like my mom... and it goes on....

  • Love Godspell! Thanks Robin for doing such a great job singing this song! It is one of my favorites of all time!

    You gotta love the 70's!

We did this in a Catholic Rock band I played bass in the mid to late 70's

Had a blast in(The Freinds of JC) in Southern Illinois and appreciated the Message and Music Godspell gave us younger Catholic Christians at the time!

  • (shes an awful singer.)

  • @callelopez Dude this woman can sing and its a great song i cant stop listening to it

  • cool its the real superman.

  • This Godspell mocks the real Jesus Christ - Yeshua Messiah and was part of the plan to convince the World that Satan doesnt exisit - if he didnt then why the occult rituial practice in Hollywood/music industry? , Jay Z and the top of the Rap Industry, and Rock - ok they the real haters using lies to manipulate minds and gain earthly power - dont be fooleod this shit is transparently a peacefreaky marxist far left secular Christians in paticular hating brainwash.

  • @jamesleeland1 My friend, Yeshua Messiah used parables to teach the truth. As does this movie (and more importantly the Play that preceeded it.) The power of God made manifest in man. The idea that salvation comes from God and not the sacrifices made by priests. The idea that to love and treat others as yourself is the highest form of Loving God. A lesson perhaps, you may have lost along the way. :Peace out

  • @Cdwonderful713 Agreed and perhaps you may have lost it along the way too - All we can do is be better people, day by day

  • Oh My God - I kind of suspected that maybe this stuff had to be something like a Satanic twist of the real message - this shit is just too creepy - but check this out! Did anyone see the forked tounge that the Jesus Freak who is Posing as Jesus flashes at 3:19 in this video?? Its definetly there it took a few minutes but I have the video paused there rite now - Its not a human tounge and is definetly forked this shit is twisted I knew it

  • @jamesleeland1 that "forked tongue" was a flash of the arm of the person behind him, idiot.

  • @J0ey9heat Wrong! Look again

  • @jamesleeland1 yea saw the loch ness moster in the upper right hand corner too.....

  • This brings me back to the commune as a child in the mid seventies. Werid Freaky People then - kinda weired now but a great soing i cant stop watchng it

  • Back in the day we sung this song in a public school . Try letting the kids sing this in school today.

  • @catcheez I also remember singing this in public school.if you asked a kid to sing this now days they would look at you like you were crazy.what a shame the way this world is heading.

  • I love this song. I can't stop singing it. The words, voice, and music!

A blessed Good Friday and Happy Easter to all.

  • I grew up in a pentecostal inspired household, but as much rhetoric that I heard from various ministers/preachers, nothing matched the simple message that this song conveys. To this day, this song comforts me in bad and good times, and keeps me optimistic for the future in these uncertain times :D

  • I wonder if you could combine bot JCSS and GODSPELL. Instead of clowns, they could stay as philosophers . Starting with, " Tower of Babble" going to "prepare ye" then "Day by Day" Judas goes off starting to doubt things and sings, " To much Heaven on their minds " Then they cast sings, " Day by Day" followed by Jesus meeting Mary M. " She sings, "by my side" and then sings, " Turn back oh man" Jesus teaches her love, but she doubts it and she sings, " I don't know how to love him "

  • @Tom6093 What good does wondering do for anyone?

  • @jujumediazone It makes you think and gives you ideas ?!?!?!

  • @Tom6093 That's a start - that's great! Keep moving on that - when you do, you'll soon find that your actions are quite different then they used to be - and what beauty will result. Now, that's something to marvel over!

  • My school did a performance of this play that sounded better. Still great though

  • Comparing the songs and the performances, I much prefer Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) to Godspell.

  • :)

  • these people frighten me

  • @kihhn that's because they are hopped up on pure grade Crystal Meth.. lmao just playin

  • @kihhn these people are running the country now...haha!

  • This is a really nice song, it`s like `elusive butterfly`, it strikes the target.

  • it's a real shame so many seem to take offense at the portrayal of Jesus as a hippie.it's not blasphemous or suggesting he does drugs. The premise is,if Jesus came to earth in 70's US,what would he be like?Who would he seek as disciples?Jesus was a revolutionary of his day.He spoke against the pharisees who pretended to be righteous.Of course he would seek out young people, not jaded by the world.By placing Jesus in the modern world,it makes what he did more real. They'd be emo or punks today.

  • @blackwhimsy They aren't hippies; they're clowns. They're being portrayed as a band of traveling performers. The message is completely different.

  • @MordredxPendragon That's why they're appearance is not as important as is the message in what they're saying and singing. Listen and practice that.

  • im doin godspell for a musical.

  • @TheHass10 me too

  • one thing that his musical had in spades.............................charm.

not religious at all but such beautiful songs.

  • BELLA CANCION !!

    NEMESIS

  • Jesus + LSD = Godspell

    lolololololololol im jk

  • @LOOKATMERAWRRRRRR so fucking true

  • Great crescendo.

  • we're doing this as our annual musical!

  • @GirlzPowa: I'm an atheist, saw Superstar, no big deal. Saw Godspell by the San Bernardino Civic light Opera in '74. Dang, it was good. So kick butt , take names, you'll do good, it a great story

  • One of my favorite songs of all time! I remember hearing it as a 9 year old back in 1972 on Top 40 stations in Southern California. Now if it were to be played on a top 40 station today, the ACLU would have a hissy fit and try to ban it from the airwaves. I say to the various oldies stations across the country: Go ahead and play it! That was a huge hit in the early 70s! Go for it!

  • dc Talk has a sweet rendition to this song: /watch?v=c84qmtpHqtA

  • When im down, I listen to this..

  • Andy & Debbie....Great Message...We were so Young back then..

  • Robin Lamont is now the assistant district attorney in Westchester County, New York.

  • I still prefer "Easy Rider."

  • Beautiful Song and Movie!!!

  • Such a uniquely Christian activity, to paint a barn psychedelic colors.

  • @goback3spaces Yes, and invariably after copious amounts of an "herb bearing seed" had been smoked!

  • i find this a happy, high energy song to sing. i just sang it for my neighbors :D

  • Greg would you like to say grace? Oh uh well Gregs Jewish dad. You're telling me that Jews don't pray, hunny? Unless you have some objection. No no no I'd love to; Pam it's not like Im a Rabi or something, I said grace at many a dinner tables....Oh dear lord three things we pray to love thee more dearly to see thee more clearly, to follow thee more nearly.

  • dirty hippies (i'm kidding)

  • stop crying

  • this word nide is the love at jesus chrys my to

  • Great song

  • Had to sing this for a ceremony at St. Patrick's Cathedral and I almost cried. I love the movie and the song. It's heartwarming for the soul.

  • Who can not love this new take on the lord?Suspenders,a superman shirt,& an afro!!!!All them bible thumpers seem to forget, this reaches the ones they probably never would in their straight laced, straight from the alter manner!

    Peace,Love,& God bless!!!!

  • @rebelrecording i know, this movie makes me feel so much closer to jesus :)

  • @rebelrecording Victor does a wonderful job reflecting the love of Christ - I like his kind eyes.

  • I WAS SIX YEARS OLD WHAN THE MOVIE CAME OUT AND I STILL LOVE IT

  • I get to sing the second soprano part to this in choir... You have no idea how fucking hard it is to learn.

  • God Bless..a simpler time when people knew what matters in life...

  • That Jew-fro looks familiar...could that be where Will Schuester got his dorky 'do?

  • I love the song and the moment how the plant 'grows'! :)

  • Godspell makes me laugh my ass off.

  • i love this so much it hurts.

  • pretty much the same way i feel about this song also...

  • Ah, the prayer from Meet the Parents xD

  • I was in a high school theater group with Michael, who authored this play for his master's thesis at Carnegie. Many of the humorous bits evolved out of the improv group we were in. He was a genius at 18, and died far too soon. It was magic seeing this as it was being created. I miss him. So nice to see this, again.

  • Too bad more christians don't really listen to the lyrics here.

Sort of a nicer version of 'take the bloody great log out of your own eye before worrying about the splinter in someone else's'

And if you need to have that explained, well, you're why I respect the teachings of Jesus while holding most of his 'fans' in contempt.

  • @ryoushii - good point, to be sure. Please also consider that Jesus came for us sinners, messed up people who need love, appreciation, acceptance - and to learn how to love, appreciate others and accept as Jesus did. Church is a hospital, not a country club... though some Christians do treat it like an exclusive club, unfortunately. But we're not all like that...

  • @ryoushii so the quot means worry about yourself and your own self being before you dictate someone's life? or instead of worrying about other's problems?

  • @TheRaizen33 it means don't try to help others when your own life is in a worse situation. Don't try to help your friend get out of a $1000 debt when you are in one for $100,000... It will be easier to help your friend once you are in a better situation

  • @mageman06 Ahhh... I knew it was along those lines.. great message:) thanks

  • @mageman06 no it doesn't???

  • @ryoushii how pleasant to think about that you know

  • @ryoushii excellent point! But hopefully, you practice those teachings rather than just respecting them. I've learned that it isn't enough just to respect them.

  • @ryoushii excellent point! But hopefully, you practice those teachings rather than just respecting them. I've learned that it isn't enough just to respect them. God will take care those "fans".

  • @ryoushii And that is because you are perfect, right!

  • it dosent matter how he looks jesus can come anytime and he can look how ever he wants.he can even look like that or maby even more worse.

  • I love the music and movie.. yes jesus looks like a child molester and a clown.. but it's someones point of view... some people like it and some don't.. so deal with it

  • Comment removed

  • is a very sad thing that somebody can´t understand that the meaning of jesus is joy and happyness

  • This movie is sick. Sacriligous to the extremes. My drama is doing part of Godspell and I'm not too happy about it. It makes a joke out everything. Jesus is not some clown. He is our LORD. Maker of the universe, the Author of our lives. Not some clown in a superman shirt. I can not watch this and not feel awful. THis makes Christianity to be a joke... Ugh this makes me so sick, and I know it makes God sick.

  • @saxxxophonee I'm a christian too and i very much enjoy godspell. Don't take offence to it :) I can see why you take offence to it but I think it is an amazing "modern" adaption of Jesus.

  • @ saxxxophonee*Jesus is not some clown.*

    Yes he is.

    RaMen.

  • Jesus is Lord Yoshua.

  • @ craigblast - I'm aware of Christian mythology.

  • I`m aware of that Evolution myth myself, you know the one about the explosion from nothing creating everything, very good science fiction tale..

  • what has evolution and the big bang theory to do with this?

Your post alone shows you know nothing about science. Cosmology and Biology are two different scientific subjects.

  • I'm not a conspiracy nut or anything..but for fun i like to watch videos dealing with such things. I couldn't believe that this movie, "Godspell" was on part 20 of "911 Hidden in Hollywood". some conspiracy people have mentioned the WTC was built to be destroyed. Bult in '73, Columbia Pictures released "Godspell" in '73. Watch the first 2 parts of "911 Hidden in Hollywood" and then watch part 20 which features this film "Godspell". crazy world we live in, but conspiracies are fun to hear

  • The song is actually from the prayer of St. Richard of Chichester:

Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ

For all the benefits Thou hast given me,

For all the pains and insults Thou hast borne for me.

O most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother,

May I know Thee more clearly,

    Love Thee more dearly,

    Follow Thee more nearly.

  • @jokerphinn1 Thank you!

  • well played boomac62, totally boomed scottfwtx and his poor use of the english language!

  • ah helllo ur obviously tik no1 spells propr on d intrnt its sooo gay iv ya do

  • well, thats one of the great things about art, some people are moved by it and others are not. keep searching and you will find something more to your liking. Peace!

  • im doing tis in my skool

  • Wow you're school is teaching you spelling really good.

  • it just doesn't read well. Perhaps you should have written it this way...." Wow, your school is teaching you how to spell very well."...but you wrote that "you're school" meaning "you are school" "is teaching you spelling very good"..that is poorly written.

  • @boomac62 Boom, you are jousting with an atheist, who HATES you. What he/she is condending with, is "diabolical confusion."

Beauty is repugnant to him/her. He/she would rather dither about spelling and syntax and your IQ.

Ted Kaczynsky the serial killer, is a tragic hero, to many on the left.

Can't remember the guy's name who blew up the building in Oklahoma City...He's SATAN, to these geeks. Keep the FAITH. God bless, Merry Christmas!

  • lol, i don't know that any atheists "hate" me, but I get your point. I was once like that myself but by the grace of God....well... you know the rest of the story!

    Peace!

  • Boom,

I have 2 brothers who cannot speak to me. I'm 58 years old...One is a Christian, for over 30 years. The other, a "Flower Child."

I confronted them both with their addictions, and told them to cut the shit (repent,) or I didn't want anything to do with them...Well, when the phone don't ring, I know who it is.

The "Christian" is an anarchist and FEELS that Evilboosh may have had something to do with 911...Cukoo, Cukoo..Evil is a type of insanity..

  • Me hace recordar taantas cosas bellas!!!

  • MEET THE PARENTS!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is a play at my school, :P

  • What is the name of the guy who plays "Jesus"?

  • Victor Garber

  • He's Jewish, by the way.

  • 2:07 Jesus needs a tracer to draw a simple star? Kind'a kills off his surpreme imortality image...

  • Everything good we have is thnx to Jesus. His birth was the greatest and most positively influential event in human history. Day by day.

  • i saw this back in the 70s, loved it then. and here we are nearly 40 years later, having not learnt anything.i despair at mankind .anyway here i am in my 50s with 4 kids and a larger belly. and i love this even more, love and peace

  • the music was done by Stephen Schwartz and as a Wicked and Godspell fan, I must say that I highly disagree. The reason that it is repeated is that more and more people catch on to what is going on. The way that we did in a show I was in was have one soloist sing the first part and then have 2 more split the second and the rest the company come in and walk around in groups to show how that we wanted to see Him more clearly, love Him more dearly and follow Him more nearly day by day.

  • I agree with you, people need to understand, that whether you love or hat God, God loves you and all of you. not just when you are having a good day.

  • There are some things that stay in my heart, and Godspell tops the list!

  • I LOVE IT!

  • This is one of my favorite songs from the 70's. How can you not still get up and bee bop to it. I agree that we need more musicals like this.

  • i saw a play of this and it was AWESOME! it was my first play i went to and i gotta say they can sure remember stuff o.o

  • i'm singing this song in our school performance of this and i'm afraid to say that i hav ruined it

    x

  • This one of the very, very few songs that I weep over secretly. Very, very few.

  • me too!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When I`m down this helps me.

  • yea same here!

  • me too. :)

  • its sounds like.."oh happy dayyyy..." from Big Mommas House lol

  • Love this musical.

  • so beautiful.

i saw godspell back in 73, i think it was.

so sweet then, so sweet today.
