Of course, since in USA we live in a fascist propeganda state populated by ignorant bigots, such comparison is liable to be correct, and thus its inevitability should not be surprising.
so according to this rule, bill o'reilly has never won an argument. as soon as bill starts speaking over his guests and pointing his hand out of frustration you know theres a kkk/nazi reference.
There was an older rule a friend of mine told me about to do with school boys having a debate... It's the same rule, just... with school boys in an all boys school. Mind you, it can't be that old... like, it can only really be as old as, you know, 1939... But, anyway, does anyone else know what I'm talking about?
The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.
Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.
@Krolblach actually they were applauding the long sock, not the person wearing the long sock. It had previously come up in the episode that Rob Brydon was a big fan of the long sock :)
As an argument grows longer the probability of anything and everything being mentioned is increased. If the argument were to continue ad infinitum then by definition the probability of all things being mentioned will be one.
What if your responding to an obvious racist that has swastikas all over there YouTube channel? Which I have seen. Have I lost debates in the first line when I say how abhorrent racism is and use the obvious connections to that fascist organisation? I'm to frightened to name it now, although, does that rule count when you ask a question?
@speebyda Being that the argument was about the use of swastikas I would say that you are aloud to in that case, by the way, we must remember that the Swastika is actually Roman.
@viciouswolf1111 well you are sort of right there. but I am pretty sure the swastika was outright egyptian, it was a hyroglyph. the influences from greece and rome were mainly in architecture, engineering and religion.
@stfanani The "other half from Greece part was for a laugh" by the way, but If you go to the Roman ruins in Pompeii you shall see that the Romans stole the sign of the swastika for their tile architecture. By the way, when you say "from greece and 'rome'" what do you mean, are we not talking about the Romans taking from Greece and Egypt.
@stfanani the swastika is a symbol from many ancient civilisations, but i believe the earliest example is indian. In indian culture i believe it is a sign of luck
@TheJamieBellinger Yep, this is just bs xD though it might be MORE LIKELY. But yeah, give a man a mask and he will show his true colors, no better place to debate.
Oh, isn't it obvious? Hitler represents the height of inflexibility of thought, right?
So, if an argument is, essentially, two people striving to communicate their perspective to each-other, and neither is willing to compromise, they will gradually become increasingly inflexible in their positions.
So, basically, there really IS a little nazism in all of us.
I really like Godwin's Law, but there are some instances where a Nazi comparison is justified. For example, the EDL came from the BNP, which was an offshoot of the National Front, which was founded by members of the British Order of Fascists, which was essentially a British Nazi party. It is not unreasonable to bring up the Nazi histories of such groups when arguing about the BNP and EDL.
Well obviously, since there is a probability that Nazi's will be mentioned, as the argument goes on longer, there is the same probability spread over a longer period therefore it is on average more likely. If something goes on for an infinite amount of time, then there is a certain probability that everything will happen, an infinite number of times.
I think, at least partly, the attractiveness of "Godwin's law" (granted it may be somewhat accurate) is premised on the subconscious associations one makes with concepts like "God" and "Win". Namely that of "success", "authority", etc... Just a hunch though
I was once called a nazi in an internet argument (I say argument - it was made up of about five comments in total), and I only wish I'd known of Godwin's law at the time - would have shoved it in that stupid bitch's face.
I feel like bringing up Hitler when it comes to cultural attitude towards minorities, or doing what one's government orders and the morality of law, is a valid invocation of Hitler/Nazis.
I think Hitler and the Nazis are used because it's the only unequivocally "bad" group of people and ideology that everyone agrees on, and therefore is a good thing to use in analogy.
@Nameless164 And the guy who killed Hitler killed the guy who killed Hitler and the guy who killed Hitler killed the guy who killed Hitler and the guy who killed Hitler killed the guy who killed Hitler and the guy who killed Hitler killed the guy who killed Hitler and the guy who killed Hitler killed the guy who killed Hitler and the guy who killed Hitler killed the guy who killed Hitler and the guy who killed Hitler killed the guy who killed Hitler.
Like Hitler, bush depends on an axis of collaborative allies, which he describes as a coalition of the willing, in order to give the impression of a broad popular alliance. These allies include the U.K. as compared to Mussolinis Italy, and Spain and Bulgaria, as compared to, well, Spain and Bulgaria, both of which were aligned with Germany during the thirties and World War II.
Like Hitler, Bush continues to pursue war without cutting back on the peacetime economy. Additional to unprecedented low interest rates bestowed by the Federal Reserve, he has actually cut federal taxes twice by substantial amounts, especially for the top one percent of U.S. taxpayers, while conducting an expensive invasion and an even more expensive occupation of a hostile nation.
Like Hitler, Bush takes pride in his status as a War President, and his global ambition makes him perhaps the most dangerous president in our nations history, a rogue chief executive capable of waging any number of illegal preemptive wars. He fully acknowledges his willingness to engage in wars of choice as well as wars of necessity. Sooner or later this choice will oblige universal conscription as well as a full-scale war economy.
Like Hitler, Bush and his cohorts emphasize the ruthlessness of their enemies in order to justify their own. Just as Hitler cited the threat of communist violence to justify even greater violence on the part of Germany, the bush team justified the invasion of Iraq by emphasizing Husseins crimes against humanity over the past twenty-five years. However, these crimes were for the most part committed when Iraq was a client-ally of the U.S.
Like Hitler, Bush incessantly shifted his arguments to justify invading Iraq--from Iraqs WMD threat to the elimination of Saddam Hussein, to his supposed Al Qaeda connection, to the creation of Iraqi democracy in the Middle East as a model for neighboring states, and back again to the WMD threat. As soon as one excuse for the war was challenged, Bush advanced to another, but only to shift back again at another time.
Like Hitler, Bush repeats lies often enough that they come to be accepted as the truth. Bush and his spokesmen argued, for example, that they had taken every measure possible to avoid war, than an invasion of Iraq would diminish (not intensify) the terrorist threat against the U.S., that Iraq was linked with Al Qaeda, and that nothing whatsoever had been achieved by U.N. inspectors to warrant the postponement of U.S. invasion plans. All of this was false.
Like Hitler, Bush scraps international treaties, most notably the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, the Biological Weapons Convention, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, the Convention on the Prohibition of Land Mines, the Chemical Weapons Convention, the Kyoto Global Warming Accord, and the International Criminal Court.
Like Hitler, Bush quickly makes and breaks diplomatic ties, and he offers generous promises that he soon abandons, as in the cases of Mexico, Russia, Afghanistan, and even New York City. The same goes for U.S. domestic programs. Once Bush was elected, many leaders of these programs learned to dread his making any kind of an appearance to praise their success, since this was almost inevitably followed by severe cuts in their budgets.
Like Hitler, Bush promotes a future world order that guarantees his own nations hegemonic supremacy rather than cooperative harmony under the authority of the United Nations (or League of Nations).
Like Hitler, Bush displays great populist enthusiasm in his patriotic speeches, but primarily serves wealthy investors who subsidize his election campaigns and share with him their comfortable lifestyle.
Like Hitler, Bush envisages our nations unique historic destiny almost as a religious cause sanctioned by God. Just as Hitler did for Germany, he takes pride in his providential role in spreading his version of Americanism throughout the entire world.
Like Hitler, Bush has increased his popularity with conservative voters by mounting an aggressive public relations campaign against foreign enemies. Just as Hitler cited international communism to justify Germanys military buildup, Bush has used Al Qaeda and the so-called Axis of Evil to justify our current military buildup. Paradoxically none of the nations in this axis--Iraq, Iran and North Korea--have had anything to do with each other.
Like Hitler, President Bush was not elected by a majority, but was forced to engage in political maneuvering in order to gain office.
Like Hitler, Bush began to curtail civil liberties in response to a well-publicized disaster, in Hitlers case the Reichstag fire, in Bushs case the 9-11 catastrophe.
Like Hitler, Bush went on to pursue a reckless foreign policy without the mandate of the electorate and despite the opposition of most foreign nations.
The thing is, the Hitler comparisons came about originally in political discussions about President Bush and his administration. The thing is, Bush and his administration were actually implementing many of Hitler's political tactics. Godwin's law came about as a way to distract people from the problems Bush was causing. Well now with Bush's efforts the world is in a tail spin. Perhaps we should have listened more to Bush's critics back then.
@thehomelessguy Hitler didn't invent said political tactics, so there is no reason to invoke the name when arguing against it. If you can't make a logical argument against something without making such a wrongheaded comparison, then you shouldn't be arguing at all. It adds nothing to the discussion and only serves to distract.
@NekoSOM Actually Hitler did either invent or invoke those political tactics, and is known historically for said tactics. Revisionists like you only make the world a worse place.
I honestly was expecting him to say "the longer an internet argument goes on, the higher the likelyhood of it turning into an argument about religion gets."
This is utter crap. Godwin's law states that the debate will eventually contain a reference to Hitler or his regime but to extend this, as not originally contained in the law, to say that the one who makes that analogy is therefore the loser or the debate must end at that point is no more intellectually sound than the suggestion that the one who smelt it dealt it.
well idk about Hitler, but the usual thing is to start insulting each other's country and all that and of course remember WWII, who won it etc :) I personally see a lot of Russia vs USA flame wars because I watch many Russia-related videos :) Technology often comes up, i.e. "our tanks are better than your tanks" etc.
@darkhawk1979 Yes, but the law also states that the argument is deemed over as soon as Hitler or Naziism is mentioned. That's what makes it different but not really sort of not maybe possibly probably not who knows.
@InFlam3sW3Trust Spot on, but I was just pointing out that part of the law is a redundant statement. You mentioned Nazism and Hitler so any argument we may have is already over lol!
@darkhawk1979 Approaches, surely. The longer any discussion is the chances of any particular thing happening gets more likely, because more things can happen in longer discussions, this must move the probability away from zero towards one. But the chances of a buffalo whistling Dixie in a pub discussion about West Ham always stays rather close to zero even if its likelihood does necessarily increase infinitesimally with every week that passes.
@MartinJWillett The only people who compare others to Hitler, are ones who no longer have any valid points to counter argue with. They have essentially lost because all they can come up with at that point is a completely unrelated attack on the other person's character. They've lost because at that point they've shown their lack of intelligence and tact and people like that aren't even worth wasting any more time on. That's why Godwin's Law is such a valid and astute observation.
@marzi444 That is the crystallized classic bollocks I have been railing against. If people act like Hitler you can and should compare them to Hitler regardless of how long you have been discussing a particular subject and if the similarity is valid then so too is your point. It is absurd to pretend that Nazis, arrogant people, undemocratic manipulators and totalitarians don't exist! They do and it is not only right but our duty to point them out.
Arguments of any form follow the same concept, after a certain amount of time: It slowly becomes more like a garden-themed costume contest, because it stops being a competition about who did the best, and more like a mass of giant tools.
@ASTEagle i·ro·ny1 [ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-] Show IPA
noun, plural -nies. (especially in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., especially as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.
I have a rule for any argument, online or offline: Never let it go too long, otherwise you feel more and more like an idiot as time goes on.
I use this analogy: Long arguments are like garden-themed costume contests, because it doesn't matter who wins or loses, and it doesn't matter that the winner gets a lot of stuff, everyone still looked like a tool for participating.
I have my own law : if a vid has a lot of views and comments, the probability of a dicksplash posting a "thumbs up" approaches one. If you don't agree you're all as evil as Hitler!
Ok, finally I understand Godwin's law. I understood the first part where using the hitler analogy is usually inappropriate, but the probability didn't quite make sense. Can Godwin's law also be adapted? I noticed conservatives don't ALWAYS" say Hitler. Sometimes they throw in a Stalin, or a Mao Tse-Tung, or a Pol Pot, usually when discussing atheism. Probably because they know Hitler was a Christian. Ohhh damn there I go with Godwin's law ;-)
well you 'hmming hmme1r' it just shows that your a 'hmming' 'hmmer!' and all the other 'hmms!' have been 'hmming' with there own 'hmmen' for the last 'hmm!' why don't you 'hmmen hmm hmm!'
I think Godwin is a fuckhead. When people talk about world issues, it's quite natural to reference Hitler or the Nazis. What bigger influence has anything had on our lives (yes, even today) than the Second World War? And when people reference Hitler or the Nazis and simply mean "intollerant like the Nazis," "hateful like the Nazis," etc., it is utterly idiotic of the listener not to make the inference.
Oh, duh...you said it was such a bad day you wouldn't be surprised if the sky fell?!?
The two top comments might be the greatest top comments in the history of youtube, and possibly the internet. Also, they violate Godwin's law.
gamegloss 23 hours ago

This is utter crap. Godwin's law states that the debate will eventually contain a reference to Hitler or his regime but to extend this, as not originally contained in the law, to say that the one who makes that analogy is therefore the loser or the debate must end at that point is no more intellectually sound than the suggestion that the one who smelt it dealt it.

Well this is the internet, 95% of the debates here will not be talking about Hitler in a strictly academic sense.
Godwin's law is like relativity, works most of the time, except at the quantum level.
superhamzah85 5 months ago
hahaha Thank you Mr Godwin! (and Steven, by extention)
I have been waiting for someone to academically comment on the overuse of Hitler in internet threads!
DCdabest 5 months ago
well idk about Hitler, but the usual thing is to start insulting each other's country and all that and of course remember WWII, who won it etc :) I personally see a lot of Russia vs USA flame wars because I watch many Russia-related videos :) Technology often comes up, i.e. "our tanks are better than your tanks" etc.
MaximPodolsky 6 months ago
Actually the longer any conversation goes the probability of anything happening is 1.
darkhawk1979 6 months ago
@darkhawk1979 Yes, but the law also states that the argument is deemed over as soon as Hitler or Naziism is mentioned. That's what makes it different but not really sort of not maybe possibly probably not who knows.
InFlam3sW3Trust 5 months ago
@InFlam3sW3Trust Spot on, but I was just pointing out that part of the law is a redundant statement. You mentioned Nazism and Hitler so any argument we may have is already over lol!
darkhawk1979 5 months ago
@InFlam3sW3Trust No it doesn't. Ignorance of the law is no defence.
MartinJWillett 5 months ago
@darkhawk1979 Approaches, surely. The longer any discussion is the chances of any particular thing happening gets more likely, because more things can happen in longer discussions, this must move the probability away from zero towards one. But the chances of a buffalo whistling Dixie in a pub discussion about West Ham always stays rather close to zero even if its likelihood does necessarily increase infinitesimally with every week that passes.
MartinJWillett 5 months ago
@MartinJWillett The only people who compare others to Hitler, are ones who no longer have any valid points to counter argue with. They have essentially lost because all they can come up with at that point is a completely unrelated attack on the other person's character. They've lost because at that point they've shown their lack of intelligence and tact and people like that aren't even worth wasting any more time on. That's why Godwin's Law is such a valid and astute observation.
marzi444 2 months ago
@marzi444 That is the crystallized classic bollocks I have been railing against. If people act like Hitler you can and should compare them to Hitler regardless of how long you have been discussing a particular subject and if the similarity is valid then so too is your point. It is absurd to pretend that Nazis, arrogant people, undemocratic manipulators and totalitarians don't exist! They do and it is not only right but our duty to point them out.
MartinJWillett 2 months ago
Mine don't end like that, they end about my atheism! :P

Arguments of any form follow the same concept, after a certain amount of time: It slowly becomes more like a garden-themed costume contest, because it stops being a competition about who did the best, and more like a mass of giant tools.

LokkerG 8 months ago
Pretty sure as a discussion grows longer the chance of a comparission to anything moves closer to one.

Quex01 9 months ago
Ok, finally I understand Godwin's law. I understood the first part where using the hitler analogy is usually inappropriate, but the probability didn't quite make sense. Can Godwin's law also be adapted? I noticed conservatives don't ALWAYS" say Hitler. Sometimes they throw in a Stalin, or a Mao Tse-Tung, or a Pol Pot, usually when discussing atheism. Probably because they know Hitler was a Christian. Ohhh damn there I go with Godwin's law ;-)
