me and my FFA friends all crank this up on the bus on the way back from competitions and stuff. is so much fun when the teacher sings along too XD its nice to finally find a group of teens that like this kind of music too :D
I've had this song in my mind and decided to look it up in youtube and grateful to find it with the lyrics as English is not my mother tongue but this song was also very popular in the 70s in my country: Peru.
A soldiers dream of home is a universal phrase that can be applied to any war that is going on right now in the world. I miss the 70s ideology and the music.
The song was widely perceived as a protest song, which is also underlined in the original promo video as Campbell is dressed up in a military outfit. However, Webb admitted in interviews that he didn't have the Vietnam War in mind when he wrote the song, as he had imagined it taking place during a battle of the Spanish-American War, the time period when the City of Galveston reached its civic peak.
@deltaraider21 your damn right it is I'm from Nebraska and the only ocean I ever saw was on my way to the Nam and this song spoke right to me. Take care brother... 101st 70-71...
Estuve en EE.UU.el año 1971 y una de las canciones que estaban de moda era Galveston;cuando la escucho se me vienen a la mente gratos momentos que vivi en esa tierra lejana,un saludo desde Peru.
I haven't heard this song for YEARS, and I had forgotten what a great song it was. Also, this has got to be the definitive video for it; so evocative!
At 1:40 you can see the statue on the beach that is the tribute to the Storm of 1900 (two years after this song is supposed to take place), which killed at least 8000 people.
@Somewheremaybe : Well, I think it's fascinating, often overlooked, Texas history. Which adds a poignancy to the song. But I don't think Webb would mind in the slightest if some associate the song with Vietnam experiences.
GREAT song, that many mistakenly think was about Vietnam. Jimmy Webb wrote it thinking about Galveston in 1898 when it was about to become a major city, and about a guy who'd gone off to the Spanish-American War.
@guarddog22 Yes, I learned that from another viewer although I was in Vietnam at the time and thought it was about Vietnam. The video was actually inspired about a friend of mine who was from Texas and wrote daily and eventually married his sweetheart from Texas. Thanks for the information, I really appreciate you taking the time. Take care.
Mactan PHilippines late 60's or early 70's this song was playing on radio while big planes fly over head, I ask grandpa if they were Philppine Airlines or PIATI and he said no they are US flying to Vietnam.
Our toy guns were carbine and garrand and Grandpa says there's a new weapon called Armalite and it will pierce through metal. ahhh memories.
