The acting in A Lion in Winter surpasses much of what is called fine acting in all of movie history. Peter O'Toole is a force of nature in this role. Hepburn matched his Henry line for line, scene for scene.

I suggest you look into "threading", using indentation. It's only been around for 20 years or so. It would make it possible to know what the FUCK people are talking about.
OH YEAH, he was nominated 8 times! My mistake thought you were referring to the movie itself. Couldnt' agree more with your statement. Cher has won an oscar but Peter O'Toole hasn't??? What the fuck Academy?
@MsIrma007 I hope you're joking. If you're not, you should probably know that Henry V means Henry the Fifth. It is one seperate play about him, not the fifth in a series. :L
Peter O'Toole's failure to win for Lawrence of Arabia was due mostly to an even more outstanding performance from Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. Lion in Winter was an even better performance by O'Toole.
Also, why pick between O'Toole and Hepburn? This movie just crackles with the energy of these two extraordinary actors. I mean, really. He was outstanding and she was his equal.
It is one of the best parts of Peter O'Toole, a real master piece! I agree with the clever comment of "VelMora26". I couldn't express myself better. Peter O'Toole is the greatest actor of his generation. I love him for my childhood and hope to see him in Paris during the shooting of "Jennifer and the Swan Boat" at the National Opera in the beginning of next May.
This amazing speech by Peter O Toole was the very reason why I bought this film. O'Toole's talent really brought this script to life. People talk about Hepburn being the star of the show but I personally think that Peter outshone her. This scene grabbed my attention from start to finish which is what the viewer is desperately looking for in not just a good film but good acting aswell.
We just disagree, every actor has a bad moment or two. Even the late great Sir Lawrence Olivier gave a less than stellar performance in "Marathon Man" (1976) and "The Boys from Brazil" (1978). I didn't like Peter O'Toole in the PBS TV mini series of "Casanova" (2005). We all seek perfection, but always prove to be mortal.
@59span43 olivier was fantastic in marathon man, yes it was a little hammy, but thats the fun of watching theatrical actors on film, like O'Toole and Pacino as well.
How, how, I pray thee someone tell me HOW this man did not win the Academy Award for this! Or 'Lawrence Of Arabia'! Or even 'Venus' for the love of mercy! O'Toole is a legend and a giant and there'll simply never be another one like him, which is as sad as it is fitting.
wonderful acting not seen for a long time and sadly probably never to be seen again, movies and actors all suck now, but at least we can view the classics and the great actors of the past from time to time and know that movies were good once upon a time
I met Peter O'toole in Boston many years ago and was honored. I also saw him on broadway and was mesmerized! In some rare hands language is lifted into poetry. Here, dear friends, is the greatest actor that ever lived!!!!
Shakespeare couldn't have written it better. I saw this on TV recently for the first time and it's made it into my top five. Just outstanding acting throughout.
@fubar50cat Indeed. Barry Lyndon and Lolita are getting Blu-Rays next year, you'll be glad to know. Oh. ever see Ridley Scott's "The Duellists" from 1977? If you love Lyndon, you're sure to at least 'like' "The Duellists".
Well, you're the one asking why Peter O'Toole is legendary, as if he doesn't deserve to be. So you're the one really insulting here. You're the one trying to hurt somebody, by asking ridiculous questions.
He does deserve to be legendary.... You get me wrong. It's a rhetorical question. I agree that he is legendary. Unfortunately, you cannot hear my tone of a voice, but I am not insulting the man. If I could say the question outloud, I would have a tone of awe. We are digging a hole that is getting too deep here. I mean we agree on the same thing. He is amazing.
My favorite film of his is "Lawrence of Arabia", by far -- the "lighted-match-to-desert-sun" splice in that film is my favorite moment in film history. And the line that Omar Sharif delivers -- "Thy mother mated with a scorpion" ends what I think is easily one of the most powerful moments in all of moviedom.
Did you know that Lawrence of Arabia is the film that made Steven Spielberg want to become a director?
Didn't know that. I've seen Peter O'toole in High Spirits and some contemporary films. I would like to see more of his classical acting. When I saw this monologue, my eyes went O.O. Heck, I am inspired to be a Shakespeare Actor by Peter.
The passion in his voice and the delivery of the speech sends shivers down my spine. Sir Peter without a doubt will go down as one of the most premier actors in history.
The man is still one of the greatest actor's of all time. This movie was a well written stage play and became immortal on the scene... it will live on forever.. O'Toole, Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins and others
@59span43 Im not sure your right to place Sir Anthony Hopkins alongside this mans name, his Hannibal Lector was laughable and terribly overrated and his superstar-supporting role in Francis Coppola's Dracula was utterly DREADFULL. Sure he has a presence of sorts and can speak... but Peter O toole has a special gift, a perfect mixture of superstar leading man and virtuoso actor. He has CLASS.
4 weeks ago I saw this movie for the first time and I was struck, not only by the dialogue-which was incredible, but the chemistry between Peter and Miss Kate. Great characters and one liners by O'Toole. Thanks for the upload!
i was having my hair cut the other day and the man him self walked in for a trim! (peter o'tool not henry the 2nd) if only i could have remeberd these lines!!! one of my life's greatest regrets!
