Hats off to Anne of Cleaves, the most virtuous to Henry's children, friend to all of Henry's children, and the only wife of Henry who got the best deal of all, and after the divorce she didn't have to deal with his fat self anymore, and plus, she kept her head.
That Anne of Cleves simply walked away with a smile on her face doesn't necessarily prove her to be intelligent, just submissive. Katherine of Aragon put up such a fight because she was standing up for her religion and her daughter, who would become a bastard if the marriage was annulled. She was a rare kind of strong and stubborn woman for the times, and I admire that a lot more than Anne's docile and obedient qualities.
@AWickedMind I see Henry and Anne as being very different to Henry and Catherine. They had only been married for less than a year while Catherine had been Henry's wife for over 20 years. Anne didn't like Henry whereas Catherine always loved him. Catherine was offered a chance to free Henry from their marriage and retain Mary's legimtimacy by taking the veil, but she refused. I respect Catherine and next to Anne Boleyn she is my favourite but I don't think Anne of Cleves was submissive either.
I agree with you 100%! Thank you so much for making this video! Anne of Cleves is my favorite wife! For the longest time I thought I was the only one who thought she was the best. That Holbien painting is one of my favorites as well. She's so beautiful and she outlived all the wives, even Katherine Parr, who outlived Henry. I agree with everthing you said. You only need to look at her marriage settlement to know she was the cleverest.
@BelovedBitterSea I agree! Anne of Cleves was always my favorite too; there was a REASON she survived and prospered from her marriage to H VIII! Excellent video!
Another thing that no one has mentioned yet is that Holbein continued to be employed by Henry. If the painting had been a bad likeness, then one might have assumed that he would be considered to have lost his touch and let go. It it had really been a grievous error he may have even been punished more severely, but it never happened.
@devorahacts You make an excellent point - if the portrait was truly unlike reality then Henry probably could have had Holbein executed but this did not happen.
Oaky I was agreeing you until you brought KOA into this. Unlike Anne Katherine had a daughter to think about. I agree that Anne was very pretty, plus I feel sorry for her, and how Henry treated her. Like Henry has right to talk about anyone's looks, he should looked in the mirror himself. but I still hold firm that KOA will always be the one true wife and Queen of Henry.
She is my 3rd favoutite wife, my favourite is definatly Catalina of Aragon and Castilla, then Katharine Parr, then Anne, I love Anne of Cleves dn't get me wrong, I just like the other two better :)
Oh my goodness! I am very impressed by this young man and his POV on Anne of Cleves! Really made me view Anne of Cleves in a different way! Thank you!
ok i resent the fact that he pulled katherine of aragon in here but anne of cleves is my 2nd fav and i do believe that she wasnt ugly and that henry just wanted to get out of the marriage for catherine howard. she did survive unlike the others and was even friends with Queen Mary I
because he said that anne was intelligent unlike anne, queen katherine had reasons why she just didnt step aside and the most important reason is mary...she wanted to safeguard mary's future and anne didnt have a child to think about so it was easy for her to step aside.
I Katherine had just accepted it, given up she and her child would have had a better life. And Mary might have seen her mother before she died. Sometimes, just accepting the situation is better and Katherine would have lived out the last few years of her life in peace and comfort with her child.
ok if katherine had accepted it then her daughter would be claimed a bastard and she would never have gotten the crown and katherine knew this so she fought. and the only reason she didnt see mary before she died is because her husband was an asshole.
She thought the crown, and her husband were much more worth the fight than seeing her daugher. Walking away humbled would have never changed the fact she was right. Would have never changed the fact that she was being wrong. But, the fact she was parted from Mary was partly her fault - she choose to be a wife and a queen rather than a mother.
The thing is would she? Why would she have reason to believe Henry when he had broken every other promise he had ever made to her? Also, she loved Henry and she was his wife, his queen, why should she give that up just because he wanted to marry a woman at least a decade younger than him? she fought for herslef and for her daughter's rightful claim
but in 1528 katherine was offered to take the veil instead and save mary from illegitimate status, but she refused showing that katherine cared more about status than mary, as persephonethemad said sometimes it's just better to walk away and in this case it shows because it was anne of cleves that survived and had a happier life, not katherine
why should she be made to do soemthing she didnt want to? lets not forget Mary never accepted her parent's annullment, does that mean she cared ore for her status than her mother? no!!
She did NOT care more for her status than for Mary - Anne Boleyn got offered an annullemtn she didnt take it just like Catherine did! Read about Catherine more and you'll se she loved her daughter deeply. Why should she be forced to step aside so her husband can amrry some young girl only a bit older than her daughter?
also reverting back to apoint i made before, why should she have believed she would have been able to see her daughter? or that she would have had a better life? henry had broken every other prommiser he'd made to her, why would he keep this one?
i dont defend henry he was still a pig, but from what happened to anne of cleves proves that he could be reasonable if you accepted his will, also when mary submitted to him they were reconciled, again shows he could be reasonable, but he was just a control freak at the end of the day, in response to the anne annulment anne did not exactly have a lot of power in the tower did she, and despite her refusal it was annulled anway so katherine did have some form of choice though it was a difficult 1
but surely she would have seen the affectionate side of him? afterall they were married for 20 years and it said that at their joint coronation that you could see the affection between them, so surely katherine would know that he was capable of some kind of affection, though granted stubborn
what i mean is she had never really seen him be kind to those who defied him (except the time she convinced him to spare the lives of those involved in the may day riots because they had young children and wives) she had begged for the life of the duke of buckingham, but henry hadnt done it.
furthermore anne boleyn was not "a bit older" than mary there was a gap of 15 years between them approximately so technically and especially given the time period anne was old enough to be mary's mother
but yeah, she would ahev definatly seen the affection sid eof him we can see he was very affectionate by the things he worte and gave to her. also the things he said to or about her.
but still pore anne of cleves.
