In June of 1989 the Poles threw out the communists in partially free elections. Tadeusz Mazowiecki became the first non-communist Prime Minister in any of the communist-bloc countries.Gorbachev did not intervene....he didn't send in the tanks. This was the signal that the countries of the Warsaw Pact could pursue their own course.
