  • Wow, this is the best tutorial that I've seen on You Tube regarding Resection. Paul's explanation was very easy to follow and the great video editing really put it all together. Sure made it more fun that a blackboard instructional! Thanks a bunch! : )

  • Really good video except for the volume, couldn't hear what was being says very well.

  • This is an excellent tip of the week. Thanks to both of you!

  • Hey thanks John, good tip of the week. we take a GPS, But we never go hiking with out a compass and map to. good tip! ;o)

  • Very informative vid, its something I need to work on.

  • Oh I had to add this one to my favorites list. Even I understood the way he explained it, very well done video :)

  • @nativerobin Thanks for the feedback! It means a ton!

  • Very interesting. You know I bought a compass like the one he is using in the video for my trip to Mystery Lake a long time ago. The compass is still in that damn plastic vault they put things in now! . I should probably get it out and get the map and learn how to use it properly. This video is at least has it all up there in the brain if I do ever need to do it. I think I'll play around with it soon. Thanks much for this video. Could be a life saver. I'd have been 17.8 degrees off track!

  • @dmacken11 Me too before I learned this! I never bothered carrying a compass because I didn't know how to use it!

  • Yet another great video John.....keep em coming, take care.

  • More great info....I love this series. Keep up the good work ;) c

  • With the advent of GPS and many peoples relaince on them. This is skill that has been that has been lost or ingnored by many back country travelers. Thanks for refreshing my memory.

    Hey John!

Cool demo on this compass technique. The special way of presenting makes it very easy to follow along.

    Thanks & greetings, Tim

  • Great tip!

  • Thanks John and Paul.

  • @MiWilderness Thanks for the feedback! Glad it was clear!

  • Great tip! Thanks for all the videos!

  • The NS/EW grid lines do not point to true north. They are simply the map maker's north. When using a map and a compass all you are interested in is the magnetic azimuth to a landmark (read from the compass) and the ability to change the magnetic azimuth to a grid azimuth (using the declination diagram and adding or subtracting the G-M angle) in order to plot it on the map. The G-M (Grid to Magnetic and vice versa) angle conversion can also be tricky.

  • @Winkiedoodles Yeah, what you said Don! ;-)

  • You're the best, John. Looking forward to more videos.

Hope life's treatin' ya good buddy :-)

  • Sweet info, good job

  • @simplymy2sense Thanks!

  • How do you transfer the degrees from the map to the compass? Thnx!

  • @2kargarage1 Great Question. Depending on where you are in the world, how you adjust the compass will be different. On the bottom right of the map there will be a compass with "TN" (true north) pointing straight up and MN (Magnetic North) To one side. If MN is to the left you add the # of degrees to the compass (turn it right X degrees). If MN is right then you subtract (turn it left X degrees). Make sure your maps are current as the magnetic fields change over time.

  • @BCoutdoorsurvival Thnx for the response. This will be a great help. I think I invented "getting lost".

  • @2kargarage1 You may have invented it, but it's those without compasses that make it popular!

  • great vid, thank you for putting this one up

    Marty

  • @mchipman1 You're welcome. Thanks for watching!

  • @TomsBackwoods You're very welcome buddy! All the credit for this one goes to Paul... he knocked this one out of the park!

    Take care Brother!
