Wow, this is the best tutorial that I've seen on You Tube regarding Resection. Paul's explanation was very easy to follow and the great video editing really put it all together. Sure made it more fun that a blackboard instructional! Thanks a bunch! : )
Very interesting. You know I bought a compass like the one he is using in the video for my trip to Mystery Lake a long time ago. The compass is still in that damn plastic vault they put things in now! . I should probably get it out and get the map and learn how to use it properly. This video is at least has it all up there in the brain if I do ever need to do it. I think I'll play around with it soon. Thanks much for this video. Could be a life saver. I'd have been 17.8 degrees off track!
With the advent of GPS and many peoples relaince on them. This is skill that has been that has been lost or ingnored by many back country travelers. Thanks for refreshing my memory.
The NS/EW grid lines do not point to true north. They are simply the map maker's north. When using a map and a compass all you are interested in is the magnetic azimuth to a landmark (read from the compass) and the ability to change the magnetic azimuth to a grid azimuth (using the declination diagram and adding or subtracting the G-M angle) in order to plot it on the map. The G-M (Grid to Magnetic and vice versa) angle conversion can also be tricky.
@2kargarage1 Great Question. Depending on where you are in the world, how you adjust the compass will be different. On the bottom right of the map there will be a compass with "TN" (true north) pointing straight up and MN (Magnetic North) To one side. If MN is to the left you add the # of degrees to the compass (turn it right X degrees). If MN is right then you subtract (turn it left X degrees). Make sure your maps are current as the magnetic fields change over time.

@BCoutdoorsurvival Thnx for the response. This will be a great help. I think I invented "getting lost".

@2kargarage1 You may have invented it, but it's those without compasses that make it popular!
