In my language (Spanish) America means the whole continent (North, Central and South America). So in my language, I'm an American too. Of course in English it's not the case. It bugs me that in English one country has taken the name of a whole continent.

I actually find that quite interesting how the same words of the same language (although there is British/American English) can mean different things, because of the different aspects of the countries. In this case its that people from Asia in America tend to be Chinese, Japanese or Korean, in Britain its Pakistani...
