I think it's ironic that so many people posting comments about how Derak's way of deadlifting is safe and that safety and form changes as one gets "stronger" in order to adapt. Well I think that this is untrue. I have learnt that there is a set of rules outlining proper form and how following these rules will prevent injury especially LOWER BACK INJURY. We learn that the spine can only handle so many curved bends before injury.
And maybe he should take peoples advice since he ran into back injury --> a rupture of his intervertebral disc between his L4 and L5. No surprise to me, and it will probably happen again... It is possible to lift this weight PROPERLY
Always ask questions and look at the research. We cannot dream up the rules of fitness.
Check out anything by Pavel Tsatsouline, former Soviet Special Forces physical training instructor and has trained personnel from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, the National Nuclear Security Administration / U.S. Department of Energy, and the US Secret Service... enjoy!
Derak has poor form. His shoulders are shrugged rather that being held back creating a tighter space between his scapulae and his back is arched. Look forward throughout the whole movement; this will help to straighten out the top of your spine.
In a competition it would be up to the judges on the day to count that as a good lift. I think it is amazing. This guy is so strong and in such condition it is hard to get my head round what he can do! Inspiring stuff.
i bet derek poundstone is happy that he has all these people giving him advice on how to lift! he surely needs it from all you other little faggots who have clearly won more worlds strongest man competitions than him
fools that are critiquing his form and what not and how he uses his knees to "support" the bar obviously have no idea that it's a technique used by men who participate in the world's strongest man event. and everybody uses some sort of assistance gear at this kind of weight, so check your facts before you post.
@jamesflames75 Definately friend. Everyone has different leverage points and an overall different build. No two people are alike; so why should we all deadlift the exact same? This idea holds true for other lifts as well. I train for strongman myself and I train alongside competitive bodybuilders, competitive powerlifters and competitive strongmen. I get to witness how everybody varies from one another with their respective sport as well as their builds.
@o0OISKY0o Causes for disqualification of a deadlift: Supporting the bar on the thighs during the performance of the lift. 'Supporting’ is defined as a body position adopted by the lifter that could not be maintained without the counterbalance of the weight being lifted.
Lifting straps – are a training aid that assist in removing grip strength as a limitation. Used inappropriately, they can prevent the development of improved grip strength. – Rippertoe
That's really strong, no one should be telling Poundstone how to lift. I like how he has no shoes on, that's the best way to do deadlifts. No shoes means you're closing to the ground therefore the bar doesn't have to travel as far. Really great lift, I wish I could deadlift half as much as Poundstone does.
An eighth of an inch isn't going to make a difference.
Why I think it's better is because there's no 'play'. Instead of being on something cushy, you're planted solid. Could crack your heel, though I guess.
It seems that platform he is lifting on is raised in relation to the plates. (Looks to be about an inch.) That means he has to go down lower to grasp the bar and it makes it a significantly more difficult lift. It's a very impressive lift.
Yeah all you guys must be correct, since his form wasn't impeccable the lift was pointless and did nothing...Fucking dumb-asses. It's a damn good thing all the geniuses of the world are located behind a laptop. I would love to see any of you walk up to Poundstone in the gym and correct his form.
to all the retards advicing proper form please put a video response of yourself executing a proper deadlift while lifting serious weight. otherwise stfu. you bitches just MIRIN BIG. U MAD? Come at me bro.
People need to understand "form" is irrelevant when you get to this stage of lifting. Form is basically a guide on how to lift the weight so you wont get hurt. Guys like Poundstone have altered the form to their body type over the years of their training. Form is essentially a "suggestion" on how to lift the weight. You truly master the technique when you understand your biomechanics applied to the lift. Form will always vary from individual to individual.
I feel like a big pile of terds. I was proud of myself for rack pulling 725 today, and I struggled with it more than he did with a full 855 deadlift.....I gotta eat/lift more.....
@skata123456789456123 How is that an "alternative name for hating" I could have said "nice hitching faggot", but I didn't did I? I respectfully critiqued his lift.
@DudeThatsSic you have no right to critique his lift cause your probably a pussy and incase you didn't know poundstone in a strongman and is way stronger than any powerlifter so shut up and go get some fat friend to put on your triple ply deadlift suit you pansy

Hey dumbasses who are hating, i wanna see you guys post a video of lifting more than 800lbs. At least 3 inches off the ground, i bet you guys aren't capable of lifting that much. This guys is one fucking beast!!
Amazing simply amazing as I watch this I wonder how man injuries this man has had, simply amazing, how much is he eating, is it genetics, works, simply amazing.
In strongman that actually is the opposite of what you need to do. You're allowed to hitch on deadlifts as long as you get the weight up. He's not a powerlifter, he's a strongman, the rules are different.
Uh uh uh, re-read my commentary. He's not a powerlifter, he's a strongman. Thus, it does not matter whether or not he hitches or uses straps because you're allowed to use them in strongman. It ALSO does not matter that he USED to be a powerlifter, because he is not one now and how he trains NOW has nothing to do with that he used to do. So I'll ask you again, what did your comment have to do with anything? What was the point you were trying to get across in response to my comment?
@Ludichris8531 It does matter that he used to be a powerlifter because it helped him as a base to get to the level he's at now in strongman. Lighten up cupcake.
Huh? That has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with my comment. My comment was regarding his form and use of straps. Someone complained that he used a hitch and straps to get the weight up and I simply explained that you're allowed to do that in strongman. How he developed his base of strength has nothing to do with this discussion.
Please do post, i understand where your coming from, but lets be honest here. That is a tremendous amount of weight and very few can lift that. At least give the guy some credit. Sure its sloppy but he got it up.
Derek im 15 and am currently getting back on to a powerlifting cycle my best lifts at 175 are 355 deadlift 315 squat and a 215 paused bench is that good or bad? any tips would be needed thanks
no one is saying he's weak. They're saying a heavy weight lifted with good form is more impressive than one lifted with questionable form, and judges think so too.
i dont care how you do your deadlifts. just get the god damn weight up. if you hurt yourself because of bad form learn from your mistakes. why anyone here would tell a guy like poundstone how to lift is beyond me.
@foottothroat21 you couldnt have said that any better man. i completely agree. probably 90% of the people who watch this videos just criticize on things they cant do themselves. only a few watch them to learn and appreciate.
im sure he dont, the sport is strongman not powerlifting, notice he wears straps and he hitches the weight (which are two things not allowed in powerlifting). know what you are talking about before commenting.
Practice how you play. If you're allowed to hitch in competition, practice it. Trust me, it's a technique. Strongman is about picking the weight up, that's it. Form is for powerlifters.
What jason meant was that obviously a strongman trains with strongman exercises and strongman techniques.. whats the point in training powerlifting if hes a strongman and vice versa?
"what if u play like shit? then you just never get better" was really really retarded to say.. u obviously didnt get the point..
Great pull - 5 stars! Can't wait to see 900 bro...you'll be there soon enough if you can stay healthy. Great speed off the bottom - just need a little more power locking it out on the top.
Yea. He was more lifting it with his lower back then with the legs. A little bit too much I think. At lest when I compare lifts I have seen from most guys.
completely wrong, the number one mistake I see being made this days with the deadlift is people starting from too low a position. The deadlift is not a squat with the bar in front, the lifts are very different when performed.
Obviously you're the dumbfuck if you don't know what an RDL is. Unless you pull round backed, which he doesn't, then you start with your ass in a low position for counter-balance and leg drive off the floor.
If you start with your fucking ass in the air like Vince Anello or Ano Turtiainen, then it's going to be almost all back. Get your shit straight and read a physics book.
lol, you little faggot. You've demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge of exercise physiology and biomechanics - all of which makes it impossible for you to have learnt anything from pros let alone work with them. Working out with your boyfriend to get your deadlift 1RM of 200lbs is not workin with pros you fuckstain faggot.
You have no goddamn clue who or what you're talking about. I was brought into the sport of powerlifting by one of the best 220's ever, Travis Mash. Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.
Just because it's not the way people in Muscle and Fitness pull you fucking jackass doesn't mean people don't do it, and it doesn't mean it doesn't work. Like Louie Simmons once said- "I rounded back is a shorter back." I should know the biomechanics of it, I pull this way, you stupid fuck.
Just to prove you wrong, look at Ano Turtiainen versus Chuck Fought. Both consistant 800+ pullers. Ano literally pulls with almost all back, while Fought keeps an arched low back and uses more leg drive off the ground.
So tell me Mr. I Know Every Goddamn Thing About Deadlifting- how is this possible if some of the best pullers in the world share the same philosophy I do, yet I just "demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge" about this subject?
You tell those arrogant fools, Roshibear. Just yesterday I was telling Richard Dawkins that evolution is a lie and he wouldn't believe me! Pff, he thinks because he is an evolutionary biologist he knows more than me about evolution...

i dont care how you do your deadlifts. just get the god damn weight up. if you hurt yourself because of bad form learn from your mistakes. why anyone here would tell a guy like poundstone how to lift is beyond me.
foottothroat21 2 years ago 93
Amen to that man, that is one of the best comments on youtube, unless you can pull, press, or squat the weight shut the hell up.
ocpowerlifters 2 years ago
@foottothroat21 you couldnt have said that any better man. i completely agree. probably 90% of the people who watch this videos just criticize on things they cant do themselves. only a few watch them to learn and appreciate.
DUVALICOUS12 1 year ago
@foottothroat21 but....he didn't actually get the weight up. Not considered a legal deadlift till the hips are locked.

what kind of straps do you use? i shrugged that much weight and ripped many straps
wolvenmoz 2 years ago
just be a man and dont use straps
m1kasd 2 years ago
hahaha okay you rep 855lbs at 190lbs with 7% body fat with no straps. its easy to type away, lol.

LOL Nice hitch, no lockout, and straps to boot. This crap isn't even worth posting on here. Back the weight down and finish the lift.
damann2be 2 years ago
XD true true he probily got a good 700 tho with lock out and no hitch still a bit impressive
guilmon30 2 years ago
Great, any advice for the rest of the WSM competitors while you're on your pulpit?
rox31313 2 years ago 4
he is a strongman, not a powerlifter...strongman does not worry about form, all they care about is getting the weight up.
metallicafan53 2 years ago 2
umm..dude...if u just lift like 855 pounds without doing it right then doing it right u can probly only lift like 800,and im sure he cares,,,
d1llyb4r110 2 years ago
im sure he dont, the sport is strongman not powerlifting, notice he wears straps and he hitches the weight (which are two things not allowed in powerlifting). know what you are talking about before commenting.
metallicafan53 2 years ago
he's doing a romanian grip not conventional so straps unavoidable...and he's a helluva lot stronger than your bozo ass, whatever your name is...

andy123ben 2 years ago
he would of got redflagged for that! he hitched!
huba00 2 years ago
Not in strongman.
BigMbot 2 years ago 2
true! but you should always practice good form!
huba00 2 years ago
Practice how you play. If you're allowed to hitch in competition, practice it. Trust me, it's a technique. Strongman is about picking the weight up, that's it. Form is for powerlifters.
JasonB83 2 years ago 4
what if you play like shit? then you just never get better?
huba00 2 years ago
What jason meant was that obviously a strongman trains with strongman exercises and strongman techniques.. whats the point in training powerlifting if hes a strongman and vice versa?
"what if u play like shit? then you just never get better" was really really retarded to say.. u obviously didnt get the point..
rantanen1 2 years ago
I agree 100 % great point

lbstone is the bomb, i watched ronnie coleman do a 800lb dead lift and say "i'd like to see anyone else do this". he needs to take a look at derek!
jamesconroyuk 2 years ago
thats a good point, but maybe Coleman should take a look at Andy Bolton too
rerol 2 years ago
Great pull - 5 stars! Can't wait to see 900 bro...you'll be there soon enough if you can stay healthy. Great speed off the bottom - just need a little more power locking it out on the top.
Incredible power either way!

wow great, that one u did at the super series was amazing as well !!!!!!!!!!!!

americans strongest man
pakishock91 3 years ago
Thats pretty amazing but he needs his hips "deeper" in the lift so he doesnt hurt his back.
StillOnThatPlayerShi 3 years ago
great call, why don't you show us how to do it, string bean
daddyofsmack 3 years ago
Yea. He was more lifting it with his lower back then with the legs. A little bit too much I think. At lest when I compare lifts I have seen from most guys.
SwedishVikingPower 3 years ago
Amazing advice from a site with cliff jumping and other hare brained stunts...LOL.
absoluteforcewear 3 years ago
shit im not hating. thats a huge lift no matter how you do it. you know you like the cliff jumping.
StillOnThatPlayerShi 3 years ago
completely wrong, the number one mistake I see being made this days with the deadlift is people starting from too low a position. The deadlift is not a squat with the bar in front, the lifts are very different when performed.
URAGR8M8 3 years ago
hes one of the strongest men in the world so it dont really matter how he lifts it.
StillOnThatPlayerShi 3 years ago
What the fuck are you talking about? He's not Finnish, so he's not going to fucking start in a RDL position.
You're an idiot.
ElPorteroBestia 3 years ago
Are you retarded? You have no idea what you are talking about you fucking sped.
URAGR8M8 3 years ago
Obviously you're the dumbfuck if you don't know what an RDL is. Unless you pull round backed, which he doesn't, then you start with your ass in a low position for counter-balance and leg drive off the floor.
If you start with your fucking ass in the air like Vince Anello or Ano Turtiainen, then it's going to be almost all back. Get your shit straight and read a physics book.
ElPorteroBestia 3 years ago
lol either way e still used his back.
rctriplefresh5 2 years ago
Oh, so you don't use your back in the deadlift? Wow, that's funny... Looks like every pro I've ever worked with was wrong! How amusing!
Fuck yourself.
ElPorteroBestia 2 years ago
you totally misconstrued my comment. my dl form is ALL back pretty much, i have shit deadlift form, i do everything but hitch and ramp.
rctriplefresh5 2 years ago
lol, you little faggot.
URAGR8M8 2 years ago
You have no goddamn clue who or what you're talking about. I was brought into the sport of powerlifting by one of the best 220's ever, Travis Mash. Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.
Just because it's not the way people in Muscle and Fitness pull you fucking jackass doesn't mean people don't do it, and it doesn't mean it doesn't work. Like Louie Simmons once said- "I rounded back is a shorter back." I should know the biomechanics of it, I pull this way, you stupid fuck.
ElPorteroBestia 2 years ago
Just to prove you wrong, look at Ano Turtiainen versus Chuck Fought. Both consistant 800+ pullers. Ano literally pulls with almost all back, while Fought keeps an arched low back and uses more leg drive off the ground.
So tell me Mr. I Know Every Goddamn Thing About Deadlifting- how is this possible if some of the best pullers in the world share the same philosophy I do, yet I just "demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge" about this subject?
Exactly. Go fuck yourself.

You tell those arrogant fools, Roshibear. Just yesterday I was telling Richard Dawkins that evolution is a lie and he wouldn't believe me! Pff, he thinks because he is an evolutionary biologist he knows more than me about evolution...
