The bird is a kind of woodpecker called a northern flicker, they will live in holes in trees or make one so they need to get the wood out where they have chipped away. ;)

Is this typical behavior for this type of bird? (Does anyone know?) I'm wondering if it's a rogue bird who stole another bird's nest, moved in, and started throwing stuff out. I once read an article entitled "Starlings are no Darlings" which reported all the atrocities these birds commit including murder, rape, kidnapping, and such. So I just wondered!
