If you don't already own the Nicolas Slonimsky Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns, you should get it. You're going in that direction and trust me, you'll love it.

It's not whole tone! it is just four note groupings transposed. It's in loads of Coltrane, Brecker etc

That's true, there aren't, but the lick isn't a complete whole tone scale. It alternates in 4ths by whole steps.

ummm.. there arent any p4th intervals in the whole tone scale.. only aug or maj3rd intervals? am i missing something?
