We cannot see the future, but events of magnitude are usually visible a long way off, or can be predicted by looking at events in history.
Also, some of the 2012 predictions violate multiple laws of physics.

And for there to be an unknown variable that could lead to cataclysm in 2012 it would have be be something so radical that science and parapsychology both couldn't even conceive it. The Maya Book of the Jaguar Priests names these previous civilizations. So we do know who they were. As for the date. Arguelles made a mistake when he converted it. He tried to convert the Maya calendar. He didn't take into account that the Gregorian calendar has leap years, but the Maya calendar doesn't. So even if something is going to happen it won't happen on the Winter Solstice in 2012 as that's not when the Maya calendar stops.

Personally, I don't really consider something a "scare" unless it's being picked up and carried by at least small media outlets, such as local newspapers. Like the Dungeons and Dragons scare, or the various health scares about pesticides and contaminated produce.

We cannot see the future, but events of magnitude are usually visible a long way off, or can be predicted by looking at events in history.
Also, some of the 2012 predictions violate multiple laws of physics.

The thing is, that pretty much everything starts small and then builds up to a crucial level. None of the known variables will even be close to that crucial level by the end of 2012. And for there to be an unknown variable that could lead to cataclysm in 2012 it would have be be something so radical that science and parapsychology both couldn't even conceive it. The Maya Book of the Jaguar Priests names these previous civilizations. So we do know who they were. As for the date. Arguelles made a mistake when he converted it. He tried to convert the Maya calendar. He didn't take into account that the Gregorian calendar has leap years, but the Maya calendar doesn't. So even if something is going to happen it won't happen on the Winter Solstice in 2012 as that's not when the Maya calendar stops.

The Book of the Jaguar Priests was written BY THE MAYA. If you want to know about Maya legends then it is the premier book, because it is where the Maya people recorded their own belief.

I can say that because I did do the research. The 2012 doomsday mythos can be traced back to the writing of a man named Jose Arguelles.
Although he claims that his work is based on Maya legend. It's actually mostly based on a Chinese book called the I Ching.
The Maya text itself (called the Book of the Jaguar Priests) doens't actually say that the world will end. Only the current Maya dynasty.
The calendar has ended before. It's cyclical.

But the Mayans didn´t just have ONE calendar, they had several. And yeah, I´ve read some Argüelles, but no one really knows what will or will not happen, right? They are just theories. Peace. =)

@2012singularity2012 What research have you done? Plane and simple, there is nothing showing that the world will end or even change in 2012. All the conspiracy theories about it are just making stuff up for all the evidence they have. What we have evidence of is that the years come and go, and 2012 will be nothing special. The question is, why aren't you sure? The world's continued existence is very obvious if you just give up the superstition. Do some research yourself.

And yes, 2012 is the end of a 26, 000 (approx.) cycle called precession of the equinoxes. The Maya knew about this, which is amazing. Nobody knows what the hell is going to happen (if at all).

You cannot pick a date and say the world will end on that exact date, then say "well, how do you know it won't? Do research!" That's just a very dishonest way to go about it, especially since the claims are proven to be false. There is no Niburu and the Mayans did not predict an end to the world.
