  • Ever heard of LIMBO? That is a perfect example of art in games.

  • Check out my renditions of Mass Effect, Dreamfall, & Myst!

  • Dear Esther, if that's not art I don't know what is

  • @imcaspa1995 please give me a logical, well structured, three-point argument as to why games cannot be art. I want to hear your side. Once I hear a good enough, mature argument, i'll try to convince you that you are wrong.

  • for every last supper there are a million doodles. for every Indiana Johns there are a thousand troll2s. for every peace of Mozart there are a thousand sing alongs. so why do people always pull up stuff like "mortal combat" or "GTA3" when arguing over this topic. for every great peace of cinema there are a thousand "Friday the 13th part6". and why when ever i bring up "shadow of the colossus" or any other game they say that they never play video games.

  • persona 3. Ill be happy to argue with ANYONE :)

  • what do u think about the game DeadSpace?

  • zeldaaa

  • @lukeprog oh god, video games can never be art, never never never, and just because somebody makes a game that takes a slightly different approach like shadow of the colossus or okami, that does not make them works of art

  • MInecraft is the most artistic game I have ever played. It's atmosphere, depth, and music makes it the most relaxing games to play. Aside from the monsters killing you.

  • i think we need to stop calling them video games

  • So glad I stumbled upon this... great video, you make some great points, and in the past I've made several others as well. I wrote a long, detailed response when I read an article in PC Gamer that said video games are not, and cannot be, art. I'll have to dig it up now, but I'm so glad there's a lot of people out there who realize the truth, that there is a great amount of artistic beauty in many games these days.

  • @jamesfish05 Literature=video games. Easily, just play a single video game from this gen, it has more voice acting and more dailouge then 50 motion movies combined. Any moron can see this and you my good sir are dumber than a moron.

  • @jayofthe400 You deserve to go to hell for even using the word "sir". Why the fuck does everyone use that fucking word on the internet? It doesn't make then any more cool or edgy. It just makes them seem like massive tits. [Reply inevitable]

  • @jamesfish05 If you don't know why I used it for the fact that it was sarcastic. also, only attacking me for using the word 'sir' ??? are you high or something? Or just that damn stupid my good 'sir' :)

  • @jamesfish05 Because I lambast trolls like you on a 100% basis.

  • @jayofthe400 The only person you are trolling is yourself. You are so made its that easy to own you.

  • @jamesfish05 To which you replied with trollish intent. Lets be honest here, movies are a failure of a artistic medium, Video games these days ARE basically books with the amount of depth you can find in them. The sheer fact that there are people like me who believe this prove you WRONG in all accounts. Video games are easily high art, you however, are nothing but a troll that knows nothing of the meaning of the word art. Also, you suck HORRIBLY at trolling. Please go to school and learn for onc

  • @jayofthe400 Too long did not read. You are just so buttmad I can feel it through the computer.

  • @jayofthe400 Oh my god this faggot is still replying. What a pathetic loser.

  • @jamesfish05 Coming from a troll. Everyone, plus up my post if you believe this man to be a huge fucking troll that is inbred and possibly below the age of 13.

  • @jayofthe400 So now I've gotten so mad you just started blurting out random insults. Lol.

  • It's hilarious to see and hear people debate about this. Diving into deep waters without walking trough shallow ones.

Failing to see how subjective language and communication can be.

It is not even a matter of knowledge ,but perception.

  • I'm a huge video game fan, but I have to say that video games as a whole can never be art.

Games can be artistic, and they usually contain art, but the act of gaming (i.e. Giving input and receiving output) is not art.

The visuals of SotC are art, the music of SotC is art, the story of SotC is art. However, SotC itself is not a piece of art. It is a collection of artworks that make up an interactive media piece.

Keep in mind: "Art" does not mean "good," and "not art" does not mean "bad."

  • great example of video games being art : ANY VIDEO GAME.

  • Cars are an art form. People who deny cars are art just haven't heard of artistic cars and have never driven them.

In fact cars the superior art because they are an interactive medium.

  • If you've ever played a game campaign which emotionally moved you, that is undeniably art. Seriously, it's like a story you unfold yourself, a story you developed through your own decisions. I've seen splotches on a canvas called art, so it's obvious that video games are artforms as well. There are deliberate forms of symbolism employed in all types of games, not to mention when a game is coupled with a compelling soundtrack, it's a beautiful thing.

  • Shadow of the Colossus, ImmorTall, The Path, Flower, Journey...

  • @luaudesigndf Nope!

  • @OldSchopenhauer Why not? ^^

  • @luaudesigndf Because a video game by definition is a game. I'll concede that a video game can contain art in the same manner a chess board or deck of cards can, but that does not make the game itself an art form .

  • @OldSchopenhauer a painting is by definition a painting. I'll concede that a painting can contain art in the same manner a chess board or deck of cards can, but that doesn't make painting itself an art form.

  • @KurosenvsGrither Except a painting is not a game, it is an art form. It's amazing you could even think that's a good rebuttal.

Honestly, you'd have to be very stunted to think killing giant monsters is an art form.

  • If a cross in a can of piss can be art, so can video games

  • Video games are potentially a much bigger art form than movies, you cannot even begin to compare both. Videogames will evolve to eventually become the game of life itself. Total immersion, you'll never know the difference from real life. Think holodeck from star-trek. Movies will become a much lower form of art compared to future videogames (the name will change they won't be called videogames anymore, but essencially are)

  • Videogames are not art and can never be art. They are an interactive medium and as such have more in common with sports. Sport can provoke emotions and provide experiences, but sport is not art. Can we please move along from this and respect videogames as something better than art rather than circling this drain of concept abuse and word manipulation? This makes us all look very bad!

  • @darkfox85 so then how do you categorize choose your own story books?

  • @Volf99 choose your own story books have less interaction than casual games.

  • please remake this video in higher quailty, i think it would really help.

  • A lot of my friends say "theyre just video games!"

but i've played some really beautiful games. like Syberia I&II. video games really are art.

  • Roger Ebert's never played Grand Theft Auto IV.

  • I agree that games are art but not all the games, actually there is really few games I can consider them arts, a few examples are Bioshock 1 and 2 because of their story line, Okami has deep artistic graphics, Red Dead Redemption is also art because it makes a the wild west come to life for us that didnt live by that time, but the best games that resemble what art is Shadow of the colossus this games is absolutly amazing...

  • The Legend of Zelda is a solid piece of art.

  • Assassins creed 1 2 and 3

  • Metal gear solid is the definetion of art.

  • Bioshock infinite is about to REALLY support this.

  • Mass Effect

    Shadow of the Colossus

    Uncharted 2

    BioShock 1 and 2

    Half-Life 2

and the list goes on. Grow up Mr. Ebert.

  • great game to end the video with.

  • I am really not a gamer. I seldom play video games, but I think that video games are and always where art. If you go by the standard definition of art: product or process that passes a message full of emotion, thoughts or mood to an audience, then video games are art. The interactivity in them makes them even more artsy because the audience (player) is more connected to the game.

  • Braid by Jonathan Blow

  • "video games are art"

    who gives a fuck?

get that shit out of my face man

games are meant for playing not ranting about arts and bullshit

  • Seriously just play Okami, ICO, Shadows of the Colossus, any zelda game (especially twilight princess), and Flower.

After those games you'll for sure see the art in games

  • @kbjami I'd have to say especially Windwaker.

  • Too bad a lot of the examples provided in the comments are pretty bad. I expected better examples like Braid, SotC, Ico, and Flower

  • whats the game at 1:09 with the balls

  • @victoryweed Maybe if you knew the movies I mentioned you would know. Comparing Chaplin to Mario is, like I said, insulting to any movie buff out there, no pun intended.

  • I've noticed that many critics lack proper knowledge of art. Even the person who made this video. Video games have been art all along, just as art has always been, it is about the experience. Do people not experience emotion when listening to bach just as they do playing a game? is there not a story? Art is about interpretation and emotion, imagination. They are not simply evolving, they are here.

  • Play Mafia 2, Red Dead Redemption and Flower. Then you will see why games can be art.

  • Only new games are to be considered art due to better graphics? I'm sorry but I think that's rather unfair. Classic games used IMAGINATION to sell due to technological limitations.

  • @victoryweed Super Mario might be the A Trip to the Moon or The Great Train Robbery, but comparing it to Chaplin is, I don't know how to put it, insulting?

  • @HalfLifeHalfDead um..i dont think its insulting,i think its idiotic, the two are not even in the same dimension of art...music,and videogame, might aswell compare Bruce Willis to beethoven, the two cant be compared

    but nonetheless,games are art,music,the stories,the sculpting of characters,the terrain,the emotions they invoke,you cant ignore those facts:/

  • @Janovjev I can and I do. Just because games have music and level design doesn't make them art just like Lady Gaga's work isn't. It takes a bit more to be art and quite frankly most DEVELOPERS refuse to call their work "art" for a reason. Until the front-runner of the industry is a war game that doesn't acknowledge war for the dreadful thing it is (like Apocalypse Now´or Full Metal Jacket) and almost all games are centered around the idea to be FUN, not Art you can't call games art.

  • @HalfLifeHalfDead Games like Silent Hill, Heavy Rain Shadow, Final Fantasy VI are art. No there isn't a war game that reveals the true horrors of war, and there probably never will be. But declaring saying soemthign can't be an art is ignorant/

  • @Badfish93 I didn't say it can't be art. I said it isn't right now and your examples reinforced my opinion. Silent Hill?! Honestly, a great horror game, but art?! Heavy Rain is a step in the right direction, even if it is at times inconsistent. Final Fantasy 6 I won't even comment on, what exactly makes it art?

  • @Badfish93 Games will become art in all probability and there are some games that are right besides the mark (Ico, Fahrenheit and smaller games like Braid), but even the devs themselves say what they do isn't art. The R* guys for instant said around the time of GTA 4 that games still haven't produced their Godfather or Citizen Kane, to which I totally agree. They still haven't. But the probably will.

  • @HalfLifeHalfDead Ture, you do have a point, but if everything tha tis put into a game art( Concept Art, music, storytelling) how come it is put into one it isn't art, it makes no sense

  • one great example of video games being art would be Mother 3, in my opinion

  • @FrenzySliver What about visual novels/ puzzle games, such as the Professor Layton series or more relevantly 999: 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors. 999 has perhaps the most gripping story I have ever experienced in gaming.

  • There are a couple story-based games no one has mentioned yet that are really great examples of how video games are art (such as Ghost Trick and the Phoenix Wright series, if anyone has heard of them).

  • @27Ganon Sure, they are fun, but I fail to see what makes them art.

  • I just want someone to answer this question, why does it matter? Can't us gamers just say it's something we like? I agree that they are art but I still don't get why it matters.

  • Art is the product of human creativity so everything is basically art although you may have varying opinions as to whether you enjoy the art or not

  • another example of video game art is the game Minecraft. for those of you taht don't know, it is a sandbox game that involves the crafting of tools, and the usage of those tools to acquire resource blocks which you can then lay down. the game has nearly unlimited potential, and the procedurally generated worlds are infinite, and random. the worlds in their natural state can often be breathtaking, and the constructions people make are simply magnificent. if that is not art, i don't know what is.

  • MGS4>Leonardo Da Vinci

  • @PSspecialist Either this is a joke or you are an idiot. I'm going for the first :)

  • @HalfLifeHalfDead NO SHIT! of course it's the first LOL. But I do believe that video games are art.

  • Every art form takes time to be accepted. The time of video games will come.

Also, I find it highly stupid when somebody picks on one aspect of one game - say, CoD multiplayer - and then uses this as a reason for why every video game is not art. Bioshock, Red Dead, Combat Evolved... visually, Crysis and some areas of Killzone... there is art in video games if you know where to look.

  • i find the many excuses used against videogames to be lacking. some say that bechose you can win (i use that word loosly) or that art can only be experienced not played whitch makes me think. so art is not art to artist? or console games are not art but arcade games are? videogames are art, get over it. i wonder, if they are ever played limbo. its awsome game about a kid searching a way to home.

  • Comment removed

  • lol i'm a videogamer but i think that videogames are not art ; ) believe me

  • Damn good argument and great presentation to boot.

  • if i create a big detailed statue in a map creator is that not art?

  • Bioshock. Fallout. Portal. The Elder Scrolls. Half Life. These are just a few examples of games that make us, as a player, question philosophy, free will, good and evil, and transport us to worlds beyond our imagining. If that isn't art, what is?

  • The participation in games means they will never be regarded as art. The examples he gave still leave room the artist to make changes - or another artist, Not the consumer. When you start to make changes to Bach you have stepped out of the realm of the fan and joined on the side of the musician.

  • @theloyalfury Movies you have to view, books you have to read and videogames you have to play. it is just the same as other mediums. just because it is new and has extremely new forms of telling stories does not mean it isn't art, hell, the oppisite really. the interaction is something that books and movies have tried to do before with little succues, but videogames have succeeded where the movie and book industry failed. anyone who even says videogames aren't art really aren't thinking right.

  • Look at the Bioshock Infinite gameplay demo. If that's not art, nothing is.

  • A great example of a game being art is 'The Company of Myself'. It's a flash game with simple controls and basic graphics but uses text and music to create a very moving exprience.

I mean, what are games trying to do, if they're not trying to create a human exprience in which the gamer/audience can relate to? Interactive enviroments do not restrict games as an art form, quite the opposite actually.

  • The video game definitely is an artform, Even PacMan can be considered Classic PopArt or something like that!

  • I am so glad that Okami was put into this video. It has both great art and music, along with a nice story line. :)

  • I'm very torn on this subject.

On the one hand, there are several games that I feel top some of the best movies in different genres... I'd venture to say that the best video games are of equal artistic weight with anything done by George Lucas or Stephen Spielberg.

But, having said that... I've never met a game that changed who I am. Movies like Lawrence of Arabia, Amadeus, or even Koyaanisqatsi.

In fact, I can't even imagine what a game would do to have a similar impact.

    Is Ebert right?

  • @FiverBeyond it doesnt have to change you, it must affect you in some way. but it can't if you automatically close your self off. shadow of the colossus is a perfect example , playing that felt like enjoying an opera and im not just talking about the music. the act of taking down all of the collosus ,in an attempt to bring a loved one back only to become a colosus your self (and you cant just watch it , you must interact with it . in the end i learned something from shadow of the collosus

  • the successful use of interactivity is very important and not always easy to pull off - games involve the same elements as film with the addition interactivity. The way that a game can immerse someone, make them part of the experience, makes it more of an art form than not.

  • If you honestly don't think Video Games are art, then go play BioShock

  • @Mazz1420

That's a poor choice of game since it tries to hard to be high brow, the system shock games would be a better choice. Less is more.

  • @Mazz1420

Hate to say it, but I agree with antisocialfatman's review when he says that Bioshock's "artsiness" is mostly superficial. It pretends to have serious themes... but actually doesn't. It pretends to be a social commentary... but it really isn't. If Bioshock is our flagship for videogames as art, then Roger Ebert might just be right.

  • @FiverBeyond you can't say that something is not art , doing so will only prove that you don't understand what art is. art is not fixed , there is no list no book saying what is and what isn’t. if something is art it just is , but not because the viewer says it is, but rather because the one who created it says it is. if you put your "heart" into creating something, that can be effect people, (even if that’s just causing a smile or a smug hateful reaction ) then it is art.

  • @barqueWorks

If you can't say that something is not art, then you also can't say that something is art.

I couldn't agree more that the definition of art is highly subjective, but having said that, it's the job of critics, reviewers, and artists themselves to 'try out' different definitions and see how different works measure up. I could easily define art in such a way that video games are art: my point is that I could also easily define it such that they aren't, and this troubles me.

  • Video games are art, but they're not "just becoming art", they've been art since their inception,

  • Video games are not art, they are games. They are beautiful, and more beautiful to me than most art, and they utilize art in the same way art was utilized in monopoly, but would you call monopoly art? No. It's a game. But the reason why games are good is because they involve you in such a way that no art could ever do it. I prefer to play a good GAME base that utilizes good art than an art game.

  • some people may say: Its a waste of time and money, and it can be dangerous from phsychological sides...But, i say, everything has bad sides... Take an example the car....Its fast its useful but yet dangerous... And yes videogames are art... Its purpose is to entairtain.

  • Super Mario Bro's will be considered Video games Citizen Kane in 50 years. Super Mario Bro's is still light-gears above most video games in gameplay which is basically what cinematography is to film. And despite Metal Gear being filled with cutscenes its currently video games best story which rivals any great literature and film of the past. I'd consider Metal Gear as today's Great Gatsby.

  • For Story: Shenmue

    For Style: Jet Set Radio

    For Comedy: No More Heroes

For Action: All shooting and fighting games

Proof that gaming is an art form.

  • another way video games are art is the way the scenery looks the character designs you don't even need to see game play or play the game to see these elements. you can look at a screen shot of a game. for example Mario games have a unique art style and it's not because of graphics limitations of Nintendo consoles that makes Mario games look like the way they look. it is because Nintendo wants to make Mario games stand out from the rest.

  • Yes, MAKING of video games is an art. PLAYING of video games isn't. Making your own art form is a lot more fun than running through a digital maze that someone has designed for you. Sounds a lot like a little mouse.

  • Good arguement. Imagine what games will be like in 50 years: graphics can only be taken so far so well have to innovate in other ways

  • I consider some of Roger Erbet's arguments seriusly poor for a "international renowed film critic".

The authorial control argument not considers the participation of the receptor (the player) who has been demostrated to be more active than was suposed to be -in theatre, for example-

But, wich I consider really absurd is to spect of an art born in the 70's to reach the level of Dante or Tarkovsky. In fact, in my opinion, film recently was properly "mature" in the 60's.

  • It takes years to make a game! it takes time and effort and thought and hard work and it is there to express an idea and to bring enjoyment into people! Video games are art! Games are becomeing so real an can make someone think so much more about something and make you feel what the creators wanted you to feel all the emotions! how can anyone dare argue and say video games are not art!

  • Video games already meet most definitions of art. I look forwards to watching the transition to high art.

  • 2:36 what game is it after prince of persia? I had this game but I don't remember it's name. can anyone help?

  • Are you the guy who does the 'Conversations from the Pale Blue Dot' podcast? Your voice sounds very familiar. Anyway, I totally agree with you here. I find it downright ridiculous that people can make the claim that video games can 'never' be art.

  • I think its just that the older generations think that video games are childish and for that reason can't have any meaningful content. Why this view? I know plenty of people in their 30's who enjoy playing them - not only for the gameplay but for the engaging storylines and artistic direction. Its not just for kids. As the medium matures this will become much more apparent.

  • now think, was music or poetry art in stone age?

  • Anything with entertainment value can become art, and when i look at videogames, i see something films can't come close to. Video Games ARE a work of art, one that you can experience with a tv,a console, and a controller. When we are gaming,we can be legendary heroes, soldiers on the front lines, generals of massive armies, or just a plucky little plumber. We already have great examples games with artistic merit,Heavy Rain,Bioshock,Flowers,Limbo among others.games are art, and micheal bay is not

  • EA stands for Electronic Arts... Rest my case...

  • if people experience games for themselves and think for themselves there are all sorts of games that could be considered art for sure. there are many aspects of different forms of art that combine to make a video game what it is in the first place. to say that an interactive movie or animation isn't art is the stupidest thing i've heard in a while.

  • Another example of video game art is Red Dead Redemption. Sure, it's a shooter, and it's sandbox style is vastly altered by your decisions, but if you remove all that and just look at its environment and story, it's truly a story that rivals the most beautiful of films.

  • @InnerSlash My opinion is that RDR is generic trash. Done so many times it's getting ridiculous. ICO on the other hand is a game I can call "art".

  • @InnerSlash I'd have to disagree. It isn't much of an art.

  • People say that video games are not art because most of them have never played any video games and the only thing they have heard about video games is that propaganda the media are trying to sell about how violent the games can make you.If people tried just to sit down and play a video game for a couple of hours they could understand why video games are deserved to be called a form of art.

  • @DonELJ ive gotten attached to video game characters :( like doms death in GoW3 games are an a art

  • More and more they are becoming art but they've got a long way to go.

GTA has some beautiful writing but the overall experience is quite hollow.

Shenmue II's still the most beautiful game I've played.

  • Excellent! I've seen a ton of videos filled with gameplay clips set to heavy metal pieces in my time, trying desperately to show visually that games can be art. Never before have I seen such a solid example of proof that video games are an emerging art form.

    Well done.

  • Ebert Has strange similarities to Darth Malak!!

VGs ARE art Deal with it

  • i do agree that video games CAN be an art form and some of the games are truly are, but you all know why it's hard to take it seriously.

unlike movies, theater or music, games are created for commercial reasons only. VG costs a lot of money and it's public is mainly kids and gamers (which is after all a limited market), so the companies do everything to please the audience. and that's prevent them to turn it to a true art.

  • @panterist exactly.

  • Nice video. Ebert recently changed his POV.

Ubisoft has changed my thinking on the subject too.

  • Good video.

  • I read the article in Game Informer on this subject recently (in fact I'm using it as a speech topic for class), and I completely agree with the argument laid out in this video.

  • God, it seems like every single "video games are art" supporters use Shadow of the Colossus as an example.

  • @madcowyup yeah, because they think it's a good example.

  • I can't help but feel we'll lose something when video games become widely recognized as a viable artistic medium. Won't the lazy, unimaginative "artists" from the film and television industries migrate into our territory and pollute our markets with the same drivel that passe
