People asking whether it is Mile Stones or Miles Tones , if you knew anything at all about Miles you would have to say it's a play on words. In other words it's both.
Why am i just now at 37 yrs old hearing this mans music. I love it. I keep playing it over and over. Are there any more good songs like this by him. Please recommend.
@916simone 4 albums, Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet & Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet
Hey I will share a story with all Miles fans. One Miles's gigs late 80sor very early 90.Miles comes on looking the man chewing gum Trumpet one hand plays a chord to beat on a keyboard.A friend of mine shouts out "hey play some jazz you bas....". Miles walks front stage looks through sunglasses out into audience goes back smiles plays the chord again, everyone cheered and laughed.
Miles Davis, a genius, and even breaks with convention with his reaction here. GREAT
@shortwatchtower No need to be so negative dude. Remember that jazz was once considered bad, and all music has its place really. There's nothing wrong with electronic music really.
so apparently this track is the inspiration and base for skrillex's track "break'n a sweat." just compare them. its crazy yet amazing that old music is inspiring the new stuff
@shortwatchtower yeah definitely not giving any props to electronic... just noticing how important older music is to our current generation. nothing beats the improv in jazz though
@Beaudereck the fact that i hate electronic music doesn't has to do with closemindedness... i can't even call it music. it are just some guys behind a turntable mixing music.. and what could i mean different from that kind of elextronic music ? i don't understand you man
@shortwatchtower definately closeminded. you are just afraid that maybe music will not always be the same. neither music sucks. just different people enjoy both genres. I like both and I get laid often.
I first bought the Milestones (vinyl) album in 1962 when I lived in London. I've carted it around the world and I still have it! It's the only LP I still own from those days and even though, of course, I now have a CD version I'd never part with that old vinyl LP.......
And nearly 50 years after first hearing it, I still regularly listen to Milestones on the CD version.
What does that tell you about the compelling nature and pure classic quality of Miles, his music and of his fellow musicians?
One of my favourite solos of all time by Cannonball. Everything from the first sequence to the way he passes the baton on with the final phrase is just perfection
@flute1998 If your principle comment on this musical number is: "this is pretty easy to play!" then it sounds to me that you are missing the whole point and feel of this music.
I forgot another denomination (it will be the 4th.), : "Mil Estones", that means, in the language of the island where I live (Mallorca, Spain),: A Thousand times. I Think is O.K.
@BirdDizCC Miles compared his improvisation to something Picasso said...about how where not to put paint or leave blank was what was really important, vs where to paint; musically speaking, that's rests vs. notes, and I'm not sure there's been anyone in the history of jazz or music in general who has so effectively used rests in their solos.
@EcargEnimsaj Check out some of Miles' earlier recordings. He shreds bebop like no one's business! During this stage in his life, he was getting out of the "wild" playing styles and focusing more on laid back, intentful phrasing. His selection in working with Coltrane made it an awesome contrast in the music - taking you from a mellow jazz extreme to a frenzied opposite! In this particular one, Cannonball added great melodic phrasing to really make for good diversity within the tune!
@EcargEnimsaj You're confusing "timid" for "deliberate"...I wish my solos sounded as decisive as Miles' do. His sense of flow and melody is pretty hard to top.
@EcargEnimsaj So you think Miles was a "timid" improvisor? I advise you to find Live/Evil and listen to "What I Say"...that'll cure you of THAT misconception very damn quickly.
@EcargEnimsaj That's on purpose, he shifted the whole popular sound of jazz from the frenetic sounds of bebop to the genius that became "cool". He was methodical, precise; he was brilliant.
Don't ever take anything away from his technique or chops, because if he couldn't play fast he never would have been chosen to play on Bird and Dizzy's records. Do your research ..
@seerskater I always felt his solo's were more lyrical and melodic than even Coltranes. Cannonball just had a beauty in his sound that can't be put into words. That's how I'd best describe his sound "beauty". Just my opinion.
i played the bass in this song for a jazz festival. my school won. pleseant grove junior high all the way!!!! the dots were a little off cause the trumpets in my jazz band dont know shit on how to dot a good damn note. ether way we won but i think we could of done better. oh ya and theres a mistake at 5:12 with a saxes.

I've been looking to learn jazz on the drums to make myself a more well rounded drummer.
Nothing inspires me like actually listening to the music, trouble is I can't find any jazz I enjoy listening to. But this isn't actually that bad.
What put me off looking up Miles Davis before was because I studied 'All Blues' at school and it was really boring haha
