Stop changing the camera, jesus christ. Also comparing paul and dylan are like apples and oranges to me. As much as I love Paul, he gives the people what they want and won't really stray too much from popular opinion, Bob just doesn't give a fuck.
lets face it, bob as much as we love him/or did, has never been as good at singing compared to van morrison or paul mccartney, and it has showed up in his later years concerts )
In politics, we have to choose. This is music. I can enjoy both Dylan and McCartney. I can have them both. Sometimes I want McCartney's version of reality, sometimes I want Bob's wonderfully quirky troubadour performances. It's wonderful to have both of them still alive and playing music. I wish John Lennon was still with us, too. Rave on.
DaHhhhhhhhhhh, McCartney has gone under the knife! Dylan is the real deal! Also he can't sing 500 songs in a concert. Your SMART MAN! Vision that's Dylan & it's great you & his dedicated fans realize that they are experiencing in the moment history in the making. Great to be a part of history instead of listening to past history. Dylan all the way!
TBH Paul McCartney has created A LOT of music since his Beatles days. His musical talent is 2nd to none and he can play piano, bass, guitar, drums, he can write, and his voice is great.(it's obviously not as good as before with his extreme vocal variation since he's 70 this year)I think his Beatles songs have more politically heavy lyrics while his Wings tracks and solo tracks are more about love and life while growing up.
The point is that McCartney has a past in a band, and Dylan always was by himself. Considering that, I vote for McCartney because doing Hey Jude and Yesterday and Maybe I'm Amazed is not easy.
Paul has become an impeccable technician of his own work. Bob is an ongoing creative artist, always becoming, never static and predictable. Bob is not on stage just to please you, but to keep himself and his art relevant. Paul has written and performed some of the greatest popular music of the twentieth century. Bob has created masterpieces of music in various musical genres that challenges himself, the listener and his peers alike.
im a hardcore mccartneyite but i kind of agree with 'penn' here.
i think mccartney despite having quite a modern day dylanesque resurge in his recent studio albums tends to forget hes a creative artist and becomes the ultimate beatles tribute act .
dylan is still a creative artist refusing to become a 1960s nostalga act.i kind of admire him more for that although i would say that mccartney is the higher genius overall.
It's an energy thing. Bob Dylan is 70 years old and as Penn Gillette points out he's still a changing things around and doing it different every time. I saw him three times in the last three years and twice in years past. No his music doesn't sound like it did in 1973, but the creative force is still there, and it's amazing. He's not a museum piece. Buy the old records if you prefer to hear that. Some people click with this and some don't.
I saw Bob for the 1st time two months ago & i agree with you,.. I'm DEF going to see him again! Even though Bob is not as formal as Paul, both are great musicians in their own right & put on amazing performances. But given the fact that Paul once played with John & George (who where equally as talented as him),..it kinda takes that needed edge off the Beatles songs he performs. I believe if Paul, John, George & Ringo were onstage today they would be just as natural & evolved as Bob is now.
I'm in complete agreement with Penn on this. People complain that Dylan's music doesn't sound like it used to, that he's lost his voice, that he looks funny, bla, bla, bla. I wouldn't give a fuck if he didn't even sing. I'd still show up and listen to him just tell a few stories. Bob Dylan is a force of nature, and you either get it or you don't. Fortunately there's still some people who get it.
I go to Dylan's concerts and don't know what song he's doing half the time, & it's just fine.
@davidk4616 People who feel like you generally, yes I'm generalizing here, have no understanding of the basic tenets of music, rythym, melody, chord structure, time signature. You and your ilk have been brainwashed that Dylan is some kind of god, when actually if he has no respect and even despises his fans and feels he owes them nothing. Why would you enjoy a music concert if you can't even recognize the songs? A: You don't know music B: you are idol worshiping someone who doesn't care about you
@davidk4616 I didn't say I knew what you know, I said generally speaking people who share your view, so that leaves room for you to have great musical understanding if you do. By the way, how do you know what I'd get or not get? Why don't you tell me what it is or at least try and before you say it's something you can't explain or shouldn't have to David, I have been around long enough to have an overview of what I'm talking about.
Stop cutting between the cameras every 1 to 5 seconds, please! It's distracting and hard to watch you looking back and forth. Stick with one view for at least 30 seconds, or maybe the whole video.
I have seen Dylan at least 20 times live since 1965 and I completely agree with Penn's analysis of his shows. You get what he wants to give you and that is that. It is clear that he knows his "voice" is gone so he won't do solo acoustic numbers but I would love to hear a few at his concerts no matter what he may think of his voice.
Bob is one of the greatest artists of all time, in any medium. He is at least equal to Picasso, Beethoven and Shakespeare. Paul is great to a lesser degree, as are any other performer songwriters compared to Dylan.
Yes, I'd agree with Penn. I'd prefer going to a Paul concert though, only cause I like the beatles the best. But I love Dylan's concept of being in the present moment and doing creation in situ.
- was surprised to discover that it was WAYYY too loud
- seemed to be nothing but monotonous mumbling
- was constantly visited by the overly enthusiastic dancing of old hippie women (I'm an old hippie) for no apparent reason (similarly to the constant inexplicable overly enthusiastic dancing of girls at the Coldplay concert that I was dragged to)
- every song seemed to sound exactly like the previous song
@rockyrigby OK it's only my opinion but if you compare the beatles early work to the period "after they met george martin" I see ( i'm a music teacher) a sudden emergence of diatonic theory and orchestration. Is that a coincidence? It is a credit to the beatles that they were willing to learn from a classically trained musician (again in my opinion) and as for john vs paul that really is subjective
@rockyrigby Yes, basically everything after please please me, I didn't say "early period" if i was asked i would divide their work into pre and post george martin.
@1empathy Then, George Martin really had nothing to do with it. He wrote the same up until he met Bob Dylan. He said somewhere that it was Dylan who inspired him to write better, deeper stuff. George Martin, their producer was there but didn't actually write songs or anything.
according to your statement, TODAY, and I MEAN.... TOOOODAAAAYYYY.... paul lost the track, dylan keeps kickin.
living under your own shadow isnt a good thing when you really got all toos ans oportunity to make it out,
the 70ies paul and bob were another men. today´s paul and bob took different ways. paul chose to mainly relive the past, bob chose to tweak things a bit.
i prefer the stones, but i respect the beatles. i just cant exacly respect living under your own past. thats a destruction.
When you say Dylan, he thinks you’re talking about Dylan Thomas, whoever he was? The man just ain’t got no culture. But it’s alright ma, everyone must get stoned.
I fucking love Paul McCartney. I saw him last summer and it was the single greatest show I've ever been to. I think these McCartney Penn Points are interesting and insightful. If you don't like what what Penn Says, or what he does with his cameras, DON"T FUCKING WATCH HIM.
I am nineteen, and it fucking sucks. WHO can get nostalgia from Justin Beiber? My generation's music is disappointing, I listen to old stuff, but it will never be my stuff because I can only study the context, but never immerse myself in it :(
@MacabreManifesto there is alot of awsome, diverse, and inspiring bands out there that aren't going to die in the next 15 years. You will not find these bands, groups, or people on cable or on your radio. we dont have to live off the past (not that its not good shit) to find something moving but we will have to get involved and dig.. i suggest going to a summer music camping festival
(all just suggestion; i used to feel the way you do and then I found the good stuff)
No more Paul McCartney!!!No more Paul McCartney!!!No more Paul McCartney!!!No more Paul McCartney!!!No more Paul McCartney!!!No more Paul McCartney!!!
End of the day this is Penn's own personal vblog..so it doesn't matter if he talks about the Beatles/John McCartney, what he is doing with Teller or if he just decides to chat about how his life is ATM.
He is more than just one dimensional ....I follow him because he covers so many diverse topics and just doesn't ramble on about the same one over and over
It's hard for Penn to compare their shows, because there's a little bit more emotion of the first show you see by someone. comparing the shows is hard when one you've seen once, and the other many times. the brain ticks just a little different the first time of everything.
Paul or Bob? Neither, I don't give a fuck. I find them impressive for their mark they have left in music, and both have inspired generations of musicians afterwards. But I still don't bend over and wish I could suck their cocks like this.
Even modern rock/metal bands and guitar "gods" I enjoy listening to now, I would be very uncomfortable to even think of this level of idolatry. I've memorized guitar solo's and riffs, but I wouldn't call my guitar hero perfect. Celebrated wrinkles? Party time!
Bob Dylan is a good poet and other artist do his songs very well. He's got to have the worse singing voice on the planet. I wouldn't walk across the street to see his concert if he was giving away free tickets.
I think the artist needs to let the fans know up front that this will be like the original stuff or if it's a new take on it. I have to say I'm more of a Paul McCartney person wanting to hear the hits the way they were played.. Nostalgia. If I want to hear Paul make stuff up then I'd want to know about it before hand. The fans are the one's who kept these artists going all these years. Respect their wishes.
I think there's a really special relationship that people have with really good music that they first heard when they were in puberty. That music for their whole life will be able to give them the warm and fuzzy feelings, not because it's that much better than other music but because it holds a connection to emotions the listener was first feeling when they first heard it. Penn I'm one of your older viewers, born in 1973, I like this stuff but I'll never love it like you do.
I agree!!! Bob is so much more progressive whereas Paul is stuck in the past which doesn't mean he isn't a legend but means he isn't as relevant but I think Lennon got the best out off him
They're both great but as artists get older so do their legends. Now they're legends are greater than the artists. Even though i think they're overrated i still think they are great. Talentwise they have been equalled before.
You're so right though. They are completely different artists and people and personalities. I tend to like what Dylan does live more than Paul. I don't like when artists play exactly like the album. If I wanted to hear that I would put on a cd. I like that Dylan will completely change songs live. Sometimes the changes can be better than the original in ways. If you see Paul once you don't need to see him again because it's the same thing. Dylan is always different experience every time.
Choosing between Bob Dylan and The Beatles is incredibly hard for me. Both are in my top 5 all time favorites. Maybe even at 1 and 2. I think I would lean towards Dylan though. If I were choosing between Beatles though ,including their solo careers, it would definitely be Lennon. I love a lot Lennon's solo stuff.
Penn I find it hard to believe that Paul came out ahead of schedule. I guess I'll have to take your word for it though. But I've been to hundreds of shows and I'm not sure if one has ever started on time. lol
mmm, well Bob Dylan has great songs and also songs that are shit cause their value is not in the song but in the concept that inspired it or that it touches on. Paul has good songs and is without a doubt a better singer player and overall musician and also a better live act, so, i guess Paul but neither of them are in the run for the best artist of all time so it's not that relevant to me who gets crowned as the superior to each other
@MrJustice01 I really wasn't in the mood for everyone to hate on me for not thinking the beatles are interesting anymore but I'm going to come right out and say it....
I Hate The Beatles
they were the Back street boys of their day. they were monkeys that put on costumes, went on stange, and sang catchy shit anyone could write ( and at the time everyone was. what they were doing wasnt unique)making big assholes money.
@MsSarahJ56 The Beatles wrote, played and sang their songs. They invented new methods of recording (methods that are standard now, I.e. Mic placement on the drums). They invented new song structures (song structure that are standard now, i.e. the middle eight). There was no one doing these things at the time. Most other bands at the time tried to sound like The Beatles, none of them achieved it. Almost every Beatles album is better than any other artist's greatest hits, excepting a few.
@TheZoas4 OK this is exactly what I ment. The thing is, I've heard so much about the beatles for so long that I just dont care anymore. great cool ok, they did some good stuff for music..... A Long Time Ago. And now there are other bands (not inthe main stream) that do new awsome things too.
any time you say you dont like something Someone has to come out and tell you why you should and I just dont care. I even pointed out this was what was going to happen. why do you care to "inform" me
Change the name of this channel to the Beatles network if your just gonna make videos about them all the god damn time. 5 out of the last 7 videos have been Beatles related.
.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles, but this is getting stupid.
I know that a lot of people have been complaining about all the Paul talk, but remember that criticism is louder than approval, not larger. I've enjoyed every episode.
I feel the same way about live shows. I love shows that feel unique and interesting time and time again. I don't know if you like them, but They Might Be Giants do live shows the same way. Never seen the same song played the same way twice.
@crazygeek777 I don't know, I see them as just on totally different pages, they were around at the same time, true, but currently we have the likes of Kanye West and the Paramore making music currently, they aren't really comparable. I love Dylan, my stepdad had the greatest hits, i whacked it on my ipod and went on to amass a (still growing) collection of his work, it speaks to me, however I've never really been into the beattles, don't hate them though
I'm gonna say this is a close ty.

mccartney can create more original melodies than dylan & is more versatile instrumentally than dylan, but there's no mistaking the fact that mccartney plays a "nostolgia" show, while dylan is a vital artist & changes his sets/arrangements all the time.
mccartney's done an awful lot of fluff in his solo career (and even his best stuff is fantasy oriented) ---- but bob sings more about real life/real concerns, etc.
i'm an utter beatle fanatic, but dylan wins over mccartney any day.

Hmm.... he talked so much about The Beatles and mentioned almost all of them.
But he didn't even mention George Harrison once??
Come one Penn, why does Harrison always seem to be "the overlooked Beatle"??

I am nineteen, and it fucking sucks. WHO can get nostalgia from Justin Beiber? My generation's music is disappointing, I listen to old stuff, but it will never be my stuff because I can only study the context, but never immerse myself in it :(
MacabreManifesto 7 months ago
@MacabreManifesto there is alot of awsome, diverse, and inspiring bands out there that aren't going to die in the next 15 years. You will not find these bands, groups, or people on cable or on your radio. we dont have to live off the past (not that its not good shit) to find something moving but we will have to get involved and dig.. i suggest going to a summer music camping festival
(all just suggestion; i used to feel the way you do and then I found the good stuff)

End of the day this is Penn's own personal vblog..so it doesn't matter if he talks about the Beatles/John McCartney, what he is doing with Teller or if he just decides to chat about how his life is ATM.
He is more than just one dimensional ....I follow him because he covers so many diverse topics and just doesn't ramble on about the same one over and over
TheDarksidePhenom 7 months ago
and I'm not bored with the Beatles tangent Penn's on right now. I could watch a few more if they came out. lol.
xophe420 7 months ago
It's hard for Penn to compare their shows, because there's a little bit more emotion of the first show you see by someone. comparing the shows is hard when one you've seen once, and the other many times. the brain ticks just a little different the first time of everything.
xophe420 7 months ago
I'm loving all the Beatles stuff

audiophile71 7 months ago 2
Paul or Bob? Neither, I don't give a fuck. I find them impressive for their mark they have left in music, and both have inspired generations of musicians afterwards. But I still don't bend over and wish I could suck their cocks like this.
Even modern rock/metal bands and guitar "gods" I enjoy listening to now, I would be very uncomfortable to even think of this level of idolatry. I've memorized guitar solo's and riffs, but I wouldn't call my guitar hero perfect. Celebrated wrinkles? Party time!
Koss42 7 months ago
Bob Dylan is a good poet and other artist do his songs very well. He's got to have the worse singing voice on the planet. I wouldn't walk across the street to see his concert if he was giving away free tickets.
nerblebun 7 months ago
I think the artist needs to let the fans know up front that this will be like the original stuff or if it's a new take on it. I have to say I'm more of a Paul McCartney person wanting to hear the hits the way they were played.. Nostalgia. If I want to hear Paul make stuff up then I'd want to know about it before hand. The fans are the one's who kept these artists going all these years. Respect their wishes.
kbrinks 7 months ago
The difference is pretty simple. Paul plays for his audience, and Bob plays for himself.
braveulysses7 7 months ago
i vote PAUL like his music better lol and your right hes better looking ;-)
THESLICKNESSEDM 7 months ago
I think there's a really special relationship that people have with really good music that they first heard when they were in puberty. That music for their whole life will be able to give them the warm and fuzzy feelings, not because it's that much better than other music but because it holds a connection to emotions the listener was first feeling when they first heard it. Penn I'm one of your older viewers, born in 1973, I like this stuff but I'll never love it like you do.

bushiyo2 7 months ago
I agree!!! Bob is so much more progressive whereas Paul is stuck in the past which doesn't mean he isn't a legend but means he isn't as relevant but I think Lennon got the best out off him
Mrkilljoy182 7 months ago
They're both great but as artists get older so do their legends. Now they're legends are greater than the artists. Even though i think they're overrated i still think they are great. Talentwise they have been equalled before.

Paul McCartney vs. Bob Dylan? thank goodness we don't have to choose between the too.
arcanisrivet 7 months ago
McCartney vs Dylan? Dylan easy.
Lennon vs Dylan? I might refuse to choose.
xVancha 7 months ago
You're so right though. They are completely different artists and people and personalities. I tend to like what Dylan does live more than Paul. I don't like when artists play exactly like the album. If I wanted to hear that I would put on a cd. I like that Dylan will completely change songs live. Sometimes the changes can be better than the original in ways. If you see Paul once you don't need to see him again because it's the same thing. Dylan is always different experience every time.
ABevs1 7 months ago
Choosing between Bob Dylan and The Beatles is incredibly hard for me. Both are in my top 5 all time favorites. Maybe even at 1 and 2. I think I would lean towards Dylan though. If I were choosing between Beatles though ,including their solo careers, it would definitely be Lennon. I love a lot Lennon's solo stuff.

darksideofthemoon7 7 months ago
mmm, well Bob Dylan has great songs and also songs that are shit cause their value is not in the song but in the concept that inspired it or that it touches on. Paul has good songs and is without a doubt a better singer player and overall musician and also a better live act, so, i guess Paul but neither of them are in the run for the best artist of all time so it's not that relevant to me who gets crowned as the superior to each other
SinisterSkyline 7 months ago
I prefer Bob :]

Penn has seen Paul once.
Penn has seen Bob many times.
Who does Penn Prefer?
Penn & Teller do the same bits in their show, and are respectfull to the memory of the bits.
Penn is more like Paul.
I've seen Penn & Teller.
Should I now be done with them?
Happy Birthday Penn :-)

Look, I like you penn. I like this show.. it usually brings a smile to my face.
BUT (and I dont hate the beatles) BUT
What in the world is your obsession with the beatles?
I just think there is alot more interesting things, alot more important things out there I would rather hear your opinion on.
One show / topic- beatles ..OK
Two shows / topic - beatles ..uuuh ok
but this is getting old (ha so are the beatles)
Just my opinion. I know Im going to be hated on hard now -So Spread It On

@MsSarahJ56 He is advertising his fellow's show in Las Vegas. I'm getting sick of it. I'm starting to fucking hate Paul McCartney.
MrJustice01 7 months ago
@MrJustice01 I really wasn't in the mood for everyone to hate on me for not thinking the beatles are interesting anymore but I'm going to come right out and say it....
I Hate The Beatles
they were the Back street boys of their day. they were monkeys that put on costumes, went on stange, and sang catchy shit anyone could write ( and at the time everyone was. what they were doing wasnt unique)making big assholes money.
MsSarahJ56 7 months ago
@MsSarahJ56 The Beatles wrote, played and sang their songs. They invented new methods of recording (methods that are standard now, I.e. Mic placement on the drums). They invented new song structures (song structure that are standard now, i.e. the middle eight). There was no one doing these things at the time. Most other bands at the time tried to sound like The Beatles, none of them achieved it. Almost every Beatles album is better than any other artist's greatest hits, excepting a few.
TheZoas4 7 months ago
@TheZoas4 OK this is exactly what I ment. The thing is, I've heard so much about the beatles for so long that I just dont care anymore. great cool ok, they did some good stuff for music..... A Long Time Ago. And now there are other bands (not inthe main stream) that do new awsome things too.
any time you say you dont like something Someone has to come out and tell you why you should and I just dont care. I even pointed out this was what was going to happen. why do you care to "inform" me
MsSarahJ56 7 months ago
Jack White is this generations Bob Dylan, and I love them both for their style.

Enough of this Beatles shit. Jesus Christ.

Change the name of this channel to the Beatles network if your just gonna make videos about them all the god damn time. 5 out of the last 7 videos have been Beatles related.
.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles, but this is getting stupid.

it's like putting hendrix(bob) up against page(mccartney)
page is great, but doesn't hold a candle to hendrix
crazygeek777 7 months ago
@crazygeek777 I don't know, I see them as just on totally different pages, they were around at the same time, true, but currently we have the likes of Kanye West and the Paramore making music currently, they aren't really comparable. I love Dylan, my stepdad had the greatest hits, i whacked it on my ipod and went on to amass a (still growing) collection of his work, it speaks to me, however I've never really been into the beattles, don't hate them though
