i saw yo la tengo for the first time in 1984...the club was packed and the power went off for 2 minutes in the middle of a song...total black and all you could hear was drums...when it came back on there they were still playing it, didnt miss a beat.....oh by the way they opened the show with the kinks 'big sky'
Though I'm not entirely sure that they all are, I'm pretty sure they also wouldn't approve of the remark you made, in solidarity. Just as only 2/3 of Low are Mormons, but I'm pretty sure the revolving door of bassists wouldn't stand for Mormon-bashing...
She's my Best Friend is featured on Lou Reed's Coney Island Baby... but I see Yule sang on a VU version that appears on Chronicles... can anyone clear this up? Probably written by Reed, performed on the road while Reed was in the band, then played by both solo artist and former band...
Lou Reed reworked a crap-load of unreleased Velvets songs during the early part of his solo career. This appears to be an arrangement of the version on "VU" that is indeed sang by Doug Yule. One can only assume it was sung on the road as almost all songs the velvets recorded they performed live in some way.

Someone who's a fan: tell me what I'm missing. Yo La Tengo aren't terribly good singers or musicians, their shows seem boring and visually uninteresting, and their songs aren't that catchy or otherwise memorable. And yet every hipster loves them. Why?
From a fan: I'm not a hipster, but I love the way Yo La Tengo blend chaos and beauty. Forget this song - it sounds like more of a joke. I agree. Instead, check out "We're An American Band" or "I Heard You Looking." Ira's guitar tone is legendary (hence the hipster following), and it's cool that he and his wife (Georgia, the drummer) often sing about each other. And if you see them live, no, there aren't pyrotechnics or leather pants. Sorry.
Their musical choices show intelligence. Lyrically, they're simple, but very smart, broaching such topics as the Stockholm syndrome or nuclear war. Musically, they cover a wide variety of genres and influences, from bossa nova to the Velvet Underground. THEY ARE COOL.
I agree. My ex boyrfriend got me onto them. I love the fact that this band doesn't need any kind of merchandise or good looks to make you feel something. The Song "One Pm" takes me to certain places no other band can.

I wouldn't describe their lyrics as simple at all.
I think they are deep and hard to grasp sometimes

Neat - even down to having the bassist sing it, as with the VU's take.
