This was THE BEST cereal EVER, my mom could not get enough for us kids. There were 5 of us. We had All the magnets and the iron on patches.
WHY did they quit making the cereal........ we thought it had to do with the fact that it was the Ralston Purina Co. It might have been dried out cat or dog food.....LOL LOL It was good stuff!!!!
I just got the complete set of 7 Freakies figures this week. Someone was selling a pile of plastic figures on ebay. I actually bid because it included 11 Nabisco Winnie the Pooh Bowl Hangers/Spoon Buddies which I saw someone sell for $125 bucks last week. I typed a search for cereal premiums & when I saw the word Freakies I realized I had Boss Moss, Grumble, Cowmumble, Goody-Goody, Snorkledorf, Hamhose, & Gargle. They fetch a pretty penny on ebay also!

I only looked for this cereal/vid posting to get this off my chest. This was the lamest cereal and marketing campaign around. Why would I want to eat a cereal that had some of the ugliest/scariest characters marketing could think of selling this product. The characters looked like something that walked out of a toxic waste dump. My little brother ate this s@#t and yes I tried it....once and never went back. Hallelujah where's the Tylenol.
I loved these commercials! I hated the cereal, but I used to always look forward to these commercials between saturday morning cartoons! I remember the first one where they discovered the freakies tree- and then the later commercials came out- and if they ever showed the first one, I used to get all excited! LOL
The cereal was awful but I loved those commercials! I had always hoped they'd be a cartoons series!!
My husband had never heard of Freakies (gasp!) and when I showed him these commercials, he still had no recollection. Then I went to our refrigerator, grabbed the Snorkledorf magnet from it and showed it to him "Oh, is THAT where he's from?" I've never been far from my Freakies magnet! When Facebook had the "post your favorite cartoon character as your profile pic", I tried in vain to find a usable picture of Snorkledorf!
Oh man...Thank you so much for posting this! I had a very vague memory for the tune in this jingle...but for the life of me I could not place it! All I knew it was somehow cartoon related. I had forgotten all about this cereal. I had a few of those indestructible "gel-like" characters. Time to do some ebay shopping now...
I used to have the entire collection of FREAKIES figurines and refridgerator magnets. Heck, they're probably still around here somewhere! I loved that cereal.
I can't believe it! Freakies cereal!!! I didn't think I'd ever see these characters ever again. I had forgotten their names, but I remembered the song. It is Burgess Merideth narrating. They have John Wayne, Mel Brooks, and other sound alikes. I didn't realize that as a kid. I loved Freakies even more than Quisp Cereal. Does anyone remember Monster cookies? Each cookie had a bite taken out of them by a different monster. Am I remembering that right?
Have any of you heard of "Breakfast of the Gods"? It has all the cereal mascots fighting in an epic war. The Freakies make an appearance, hanging out in their tree.
As a representative of those born after 1990, my brain is hemoraging right now. And I have good reason to believe that it has to do with these commercials.
WOW....I ask people ALL the time, "do u remember Freakies cereal?"...no one ever knows about or remembers Freakies. I LOVED Freakies and the commercials!
This was great to see again, it's been over 35 years! Great memories of Freakies cereal, Freakies toys, cars, boats and iron on patches! Every Saturday morning ate Freakies and watched Sigmund & The Seamonsters, Land of The Lost, Shazam & Isis! Thanks for posting!
Since I'm only 17, I don't know much about vintage cereal commercials, but this was my dad's favorite ad campaign. I showed him this and he FREAKED out, no pun intended.
Great collection! I remember each one, and think I had the iron-ons!
Now I can't help thinking - they had a cereal that looked like plain Froot-Loops, and marketed it as Freakies? Then had to add fruit, chocolate, and toys to sell it?
Wow!,I used to love the characters of this cereal! This is awesome! Such memoriers of care freakie times.I always ask people around my age when we start talking " remember when" if they remember the cereal and most people don't remember. I always loved their commercials and had the magnets and all the toys. Thank You for posting this !!!! It totally made my day!
freakies brings back old memories the cereal was ok but lets be honest most of us really didn't care what it tasted like we just wanted the prize.lol When I got a box I dumped the cereal out in a plastic container got the prize and off to play I went. For some reason I thought they had a matchbox like car as a prize not the freek mobile but another type of car with a metal bottom and one of the freekies on top of it. does anyone remember them? it could have been from another cereal.
I remember you could order all the Freakies figures off the box with a box top and a modest amount of change, and my mom actually got them for me for my birthday! I miss them very much. Snorkledorf was my favorite. Good cereal.
WOW! I had completely forgot about this stuff. I think I had the fruity Freaky girl toy. Could it have been a pencil topper? I also had the 45 record. The flimsy square record, right? How cool to find this. Thanks for posting.
I LOVE Freakies. I was so excited when in my college years they brought it back for a short period...but pu tthem in space instead of in their tree. Sigh...memories...
I LOVED Freakies Commercials and the Freakies prizes- but I absolutely hated the cereal! My mother always got mad because I'd beg her to buy it, and never eat it- and the fruity freakies weren't much better- looked like froot loops, but didn't taste like it! I remember these commercials as if it were yesterday! Thanks for posting them!!!!!!!
Is that Burgess Merideth as the announcer?I really loved waking up Saturday mornings opening up a fresh box Freakies searching for the free magnets and sitting down to watch Land of the Lost and other Saturday morning Classic Toons like Shazam and others, those were the days.I miss the seventies.
If Freakies cereal was to return, (i hope)it would be probabily be from General Mills, they may of obtained the cereal rights from Ralston-Purina.Chex- formerly from Ralston-Purina now under brand name General Mills- Grins,Smiles Giggles And Laughs,(now defunct) C3PO's Cereal (now defunct) Cracker Jack Cereal (now defunct) and others were carried by Ralston-Purina.
pretty much captain crunch in a different shape IIRC. but it wasn't about the cereal, it was all about the characters. i remember wanting the cereal so bad but not really liking the taste. but i loved the prizes inside and still have a few of them including a hamhose iron-on patch and some goodie goodie figures. but snorkeldorf rules, he's the best!!
This was my favorite cereal in the 70's...then it disappeared and re-appeared in the '80's and is now gone again...sigh...never thought I would see those commercials again!
OMG! I have about 20 Freakies magnets stuck on my pod at work. A coworker asked me yesterday "did you get those out of a cereal box?" I proudly said "YES! FREAKIES!!" Last night I found this and other posted Freakies videos on YouTube. Love the Freakies! Love YouTube for being a source for the memories! I was about 7-8 years old when the cereal was popular. It was my favorite.
This cereal was sold in the mid seventies, and was in the most feeble manner relaunched in the eighties. Way before your stated time. The characters were interesting, but the cereal tasted vaguely like Capn Crunch but with a slightly metallic taste.
True that...few cereal characters can be that sympathetic....Sugar Bear for instance is so freakin' arrogant i just wanted to smash him in the face....okay, it's just an ad ...good air in,bad air out...
Once Cocoa & Fruity Freakies came around, it was the beginning of the end....sob.The writing was on the wall, but we were to young to realize it.Bring back Freakies!!!
Grumble was not a "monster" (not that there's anything wrong with being a monster),but he would resent you calling him such a name.He was a proud "Freakie".
This was my FAVORITE cereal growing up. I still know the freakies song!!! My kids thought I was nuts and this was something I made up, until I was able to show them!!!!
From a blog on "Group of Four" advocate Frank Stamm's myspace page:
"What set Freakies apart was that first set of prizes. In the first boxes of the cereal, the prize was one of the seven plastic Freakies characters. What made that special was the box itself. On the box they explained to you who the Freakies were, what their names were, that they lived together in a tree, what their personalities were like. It's like you were buying into a whole other world."
I was into the Freakies,I had and lost ALL of its magnets and the figurines many many years ago,I think that the Freakies charaters was far more popular than the cereal itself.
Factoid nobody will care about: Goody-Goody in her Carmen Miranda fruit hat - few people know this but Carmen Miranda was NOT Hispanic or Spanish. She was actually Portuguese. Google it! :D

I still have a complete set of Freakies. My Uncle Carey loved them. I don't think the cereal was as popular as these characters.

Some seriously familiar voices in these. Dear lord I hope that's not really Mel Brooks doing Grumble in the "monster" one though! - mnw

Grumble was not a "monster" (not that there's anything wrong with being a monster),but he would resent you calling him such a name.He was a proud "Freakie".

WOW! I have the same tape from them 10 years. The beginning is cut off.

I also think that Goody-Goody looks like a pink female Yoshi (of the Nintendo charaters)

I was into the Freakies,I had and lost ALL of its magnets and the figurines many many years ago,I think that the Freakies charaters was far more popular than the cereal itself.

LOL! I loved those commercials. But I was always afraid to eat the cereal. Quisp was my ill. Anyone remember quisp?
1acroyear1 4 years ago
Yeah, Quisp the space alien.
How about his buddy Quake?
There were two versions of Quake. A grungy construction worker and then the "new improved" one dressed in bright white.
I hated the second version.
But then again, I hated the cereal too.

Quisp didn't need to change. It was always the better cereal which is why he outlasted him and that orange kangaroo.

Factoid nobody will care about: Goody-Goody in her Carmen Miranda fruit hat - few people know this but Carmen Miranda was NOT Hispanic or Spanish. She was actually Portuguese. Google it! :D

Was she from Brazil?

I remember the Freakies from my childhood. It looks like they're having the good life living near that tree.

Thank you for posting the video. I have been looking for this for a long time. I was 3 in 1974 and these commercials are my oldest memory!
