  • ' have ur own opinions

  • i understand you all of ur own opinions on maynard but really who the hell are u to criticize someone as legendary as maynard?

  • It kills my soul every time I hear Maynard fart out high notes without any consistency, tone, strength or ANY qualities that JB Arban tried to teach the world. What kills me is not that he's doing it, but that people think he's a great trumpet player for doing it.

  • @tpstrat14 Please don't leave ignorant hate comments here, its not the place. Second of all, if it hurts you, don't listen to the music. Many people can find a lot of great passion and energy in Maynard, and who are you to take that away?

  • @sanaru02 Many people found great passion and energy from Hitler.... not saying Maynard is the Hitler of trumpet, but.... actually yes I am saying Maynard is the Hitler of trumpet!

  • Theres a couple of people that are better than maynard miles davis clifford brown freddie hubbered randy breka

  • Amazin

  • Beeeeeest!

  • @tpstrat14 what are you on that you think Maynard is terrible? No other trumpet player can come close to those hellish high notes

As well as his wonderful cleanliness of playing. I'm done wasting my time because you and every other stupid person out there will always and forever be stupid.

  • Maynard, Pete Erskine, and the guitar dude are gods.

  • Not only would I love to play trumpet like that (because MF was a wonderful fun person) but I would love to dress like that. Where can one find a shirt that hip?

  • Im gonna listen to this cause I past 100 subscribers today!

  • I really like the ROcky song!

  • Anyone know who played the guitar solo on "Gonna Fly Now?"

  • @sargeanthulka

his name is jeff layton, i think

  • S:-l this isnt what i wanted lol

  • Bad sound quality on the video, but I love this song! Trombones rule!

  • We play this song in jazz band at school. I think I need to practice a little more after watching the drummer go crazy...................

  • For the record this drummer is out of control from 3:00 to 3:39!! He is so in the pocket he is like what Charlie Sheen would call a "warlock with tiger blood!!"

  • I am not a musician but reading this dialogue i must comment. I can't comprehend how anyone could in anyway diminish or even criticize Maynard's playing. Coke or no coke this music and its genre is an expression. An expression teaming with energy, passion, and life!! When I hear people down playing his technique it is simply placing limits on what should be a complete open expression of feeling and emotion. This band is at a level of play that is so superior it boggles the mind!

  • ANDRES ''EL MAPACHE''

  • Stan Mark on lead tpt--Gods own lead trumpeter, blinding!

  • Brass players know how difficult it is to play in that register - horns especially - the notes are so close on the harmonic series any note can come out. This is not a woodwind/piano where you press down a key and the right magically appears. He played up there and above. Some of you need to get your heads out of your asses - I know it is warm and confortable there but you are missing a great big world.

  • @champouillon Agreed. The difference between MF and others, was not only did he hit the hellish high notes, but he played in that register.

  • It is always wonderful when ANYONE criticizes Maynard. He was a masterful improvisor - listen to any of his older records. The world wanted high notes - he played them better than anyone else.

  • My God this man can't play trumpet worth a shit..... Makes my heart sink to hear him play and know that he's immensely popular. So sad. What has the world come to

  • Ahhhh now I understand It´s Rocky song nice tune!

  • Maynard Ferguson is horrible. I keep giving him a second chance because of what people like pspugrade ^^ say, but he just plain SUCKS. He sounds like a dying mouse......

  • I always call this one GONNA FART NOW... Man, Maynard used to blow the *ss outta that trumpet of his and could put on a show... Wish we had band leaders like that today ! ! !

  • @EddieLandsberg lol. Appropriate name for Maynard. He farts ALL over the stage. This is probably the least enjoyable trumpet solo performance that I have EVER heard.

  • That is Santana in the guitars wow

  • Wonderful.

    When was this?

  • A dont understand this is Rocky song and nothing else :S.

  • Toot that flute,FOOL. He a floutist Ladies and gentlemen!!!!!!

  • no no this is Rocky song :/ wrong title yes? This is rocky song

  • @platez81 The Rocky theme song is "Gonna Fly Now".

  • @platez81 you are an idiot...the song is 'gonna fly now' - it was used as the sound track in the rocky movie

  • Which was Wayne?

  • This is as good as its ever gonna get - Maynard was the master.

I love how at ease the guitar player is - most of the rock bands would be pulling stupid faces at the physical strain on their bodies & looking up to heaven.

great technique - Hark at that Bass player!!!!!!!

  • This is as good as its ever gonna get - Maynard was the master.

I love how at ease the guitar player is - most of the rock bands would be pulling stupid faces at the physical strain on their bodies & looking up to heaven.

    great technique

  • This is as good as its ever gonna get - Maynard was the master

  • Yay for Wayne Bergeron on trumpet in the background!

  • Back in 89 I was lucky enough to land a six show 2nd trumpet gig with Maynard's big band. What a time. That man could really bring out the best in a band.I know he was able to take me to entirely different performance level within three practice sessions.Although he did break my balls bigtime when he saw my horn case contained both a trumpet and a fluegelhorn. He hated that fucking thing.I wont even go into what he had to say about Mangione, but I believe the phrase,"Tone Deaf" was involved.

  • It's much better than the original version in my opinion.

  • the ppl who disliked this have somthing wrong with them vote up if u agree

  • Billy Mays PICCOLO SOLO!!!!

  • Maynard is awesome! Check out Wayne Bergeron's take on this song with the MF Tribute band. Wayne also does a great job on Rob Keiter's jazz vocal collection of love songs, "The Glory of Love" (released October 26 by Sketchin' Records).

  • @ginaldocarlos GREAT POST!!!!

  • MAN PETER ERSKINE MAKE MY DICK HARD!!!!!!!

  • He was on the field with us at SC for half time show -- couldn;t see him from where I was standing -- Tbone section --still amazing

  • Definition of a good drummer: One who can actually keep time during a solo. My High School band's drummer always just flails around hitting random stuff.

  • @bigbandman95 You basically just said "That's so amazing that the drummer can keep time"..lol.. not surprised to find a top comment like that on a Maynard video. Shit both Maynard and his bands SSUUUUCCCCCKKKED. Kills my soul every time I hear Maynard fart out high notes without any consistency, tone, strength or ANYTHING that JB Arban tried to teach the world....

  • Nobody did it better. Thanks!

  • 21 people got dizzy and hit the dislike button

  • was a sad day when he died, i met him when i was younger the year before he died, great guy

  • Thanks, Canada!

  • Peter Erskine on drums for the win

  • @KJEllwein

Can't agree more. What a solo.

  • @KJEllwein

    Can't agree more :)

  • Our college jazz band played at half time during one of our basketball team's thrashing. I was chosen to do the Maynard part since a) I could scream on the trumpet and b) I was the drummer so who cares if I blew my chops. Since I couldn't rotary breathe, I locked a chair behind my knees. Sure enough, I hit that high note and held it. When I woke up, it was near the end of the song. I couldn't play anything else, but I did hit the last three notes.

  • Anyone else besides me notice that all the wood instruments used here had what's known as a "natural" finish?? I refer to the Fender Strat, Precision Bass, and the Slingerland drums. Coinkydink??

  • Peter Erskine on drums!!

  • 2:57- END, the best. :)

  • @PsYcHoFaB 0:01-END, the best. :)

  • @selector111 True that! Though if I had to pick out a part of it, it's that! :)

  • Maynard died on my birthday :( R.I.P.

  • @wasabiman17

I'm in the same boat. What a way to remember your birthday, huh?

  • 446 to the end is my fav part

  • hahahahha i'm gonna play this for a concert with the school summer band my parents got me into

  • discolicious...wait what year is this?

  • the solo guitarist looks like he could be from one of those old 70s porn films

  • @escillon1 absolutely! hilarious! but what an awesome solo....!

  • @escillon1 He is from one of those old 70s porn films

  • great

  • "Just awful as he got older"? Yes, he got less consistent as he aged, as most musicians do, but the stuff he was playing in his seventies was still bloody incredible. You may have caught him on a bad night - but MF was still great, right to the end. I heard him drill a double C just a few weeks before he died that could have peeled the paint off the back wall of the club - it was blistering. How well do you think you'll be playing when you're 75, eh? yeah, that's what I thought. :)

  • Damn. Is that Geraldo Rivera in the audience at the very end ?

  • 2:56 gave me shivers :) Can anyone tell me what note that is?

  • It's an A (1760Hz)

  • Concert A - B natural on the trumpet. He played it like he could play it all day. This has always been one of my favorite clips. Maynard at times, especially when he got older - wasn't accurate like he was when he was younger. Here, we see a side of his younger playing days. He man was simply a monster - he was brilliant. 4:25 is my favorite.

  • He was just awful once he got older and still tried to play. Saw him later with a small group.....AAACK !! Not sure what he was on, but.....His younger days he was awsome!

  • It`s a 3rd octave high D.

  • 3rd A???

  • I'm really digging the little funk vamp from :20 to :35.

  • I'll try this 2:59 at our concert in may... scaaaaaared =)

  • I wish my high school jazz band looked as hip as Maynard's band!

  • I think we all wish we looked as hip as these cats.

  • I listened to the James Last recording of Rocky feat. Derek Watkins, and it just doesn't hit me the same (at all really) as Maynard's arrangement does. I may be a little biased being a trumpet player myself and realizing the hours of practice that go into just this type of song, but the overall feeling is that yes, there are blowing their brains out, which makes the song so so powerful. Last's recording is flawless and enjoyable, but Maynard's makes you want to sprint down Ben Franklin Ave.

  • Sigh...

So what you're saying is, "I don't understand this kind of music, and what I don't understand scares me. So I'm going to rip on it like a little kid." Right?

  • Are you that small minded, its one song, did you see the rest of the performance, doubt it, its the rocky theme, one of his signature pieces, which means high, loud, fast. His high notes are fat and full, and who wants to listen to a kettle or other metal objects, no one, and i don't know of anyone who can scream on metal objects like maynard can on a trumpet.

  • They're playing loud because this particular song, and this particular arrangement of it, is meant to be played loud. As for the "extreme thin high notes", it's the quality of the recording. Listen to any of the more recent videos of Ferguson playing, ones in higher quality, they give you a better idea of how he really sounded, instead of this 30+ year old recording.

  • If this music had been written to be played expressively, then I would have agreed with you on this statement, but Gonna Fly Now was written and intended to be played in the way that Maynard Ferguson and many other musicians have played it. I totally disagree with the words about Ferguson and his band just playing high, loud and without expression. Listening to his recording of 'Round Midnight is a perfect backs that up. A brilliant trumpeter doesn't get famous from blowing into a kettle.

  • ( @pethayoo1 )

  • @pspupgrade "A brilliant trumpeter doesn't get famous from blowing into a kettle" Maynard proved you wrong! I need to know what people see in this man's playing. He flubs every 10th note; he plays with a pinched off, narrow sound when he plays high anda blotty, uncontrolled sound when he plays low. What do you people see in this man's trumpeting ability?!?!?!?! Please tell me if you know.

  • @tpstrat14

One thing Maynard lacked, I'll admit, was his ability to improvise. What set him apart from other trumpet players was his virtuosic and lyrical solos especially in the high register. No matter what he played he always played with soul, which you obviously don't seem to care about. In addition to his performance skills, he had a genuine love for music. As an educator he really cared about jazz and young musicians.

  • @tkim69 Lyrical? Virtuosic? What are you listening to? He FLUBS every 10th note... If you think someone throwing up is lyrical, then I guess you have your own opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • @tpstrat14

Unless you can say you're an established jazz critic, I stand by the statement Maynard Ferguson had virtuosic and lyrical solos in the upper register because I am quoting from Dr. Chuck Berg in his article "The Fox is Big on Bop".

  • @tkim69 Oh. Well President Obama said Maynard is shit. So did Ghandi. So I win. But in all seriousness, tell me what you like about his playing other than other people like it. I see nothing virtuosic whatsoever.

  • @tpstrat14

I already told you son. I personality like his virtuosic high note playing that makes me enjoy his music. I happened to give you my support because you obviously fail to see this. I'm doing a research paper on Maynard right now, so I've got a tonne of testimonials about Maynard's performances if you really want. But please, don't be a sorry ass SoB just because you're sore that you won't ever come close to Maynard's playing abilities.

  • @tkim69 That may be true that I will never be as skilled as Maynard. But Maynard uses his abilities to play shit, rather than music. The trumpet is not a freak instrument. It is not to be trifled with like Maynard does, what with imitating dying mice and such. It is to be played beautifully and lyrically. Get the coke out of your system and then come back and play us some music, Maynard

  • @tpstrat14

I hope you realize that the trumpet can produce all sorts of sounds. Depending on the genre, style of music, or even on the piece, you can change your tone to produce the best overall sound that fits with the music in question. Maynard has an appropriate sound quality and energy for this tune in particular since it's a soundtrack for Rocky. If you listen to some of Maynard's earlier recordings like "Maria" and "Danny Boy", Maynard plays beautifully and lyrically.

  • @tpstrat14 Yeah but Obama is shit so.......

  • No reason other than to play a loud song and get paid for it, The James Last Orchestra is awsome but don't take away from talented musicans because you don't like how loud they are playing and the last orchestra plays things similar to this.

  • @pethayoo1 The James Last Version is for elevators or smart shopping. Maynard hits the stomach and moves me. And think about the Rocky movie. Pure Testosterone and Brutality. And so they play...u specialist.

  • The piccolo is awesome.

  • That bass part at 4:40 is all kinds of sexy.

  • dude has some insane high chops on trumpet

Loving the haircuts and sleazy beards and mustaches

  • have u heard derek watkins version from james last i suggest searching it he has amazingly high chops

  • The classic Maynard tune. Amazing high notes.

  • @EnigmaInPr

What an ignorant comment! Fuck off you idiot! Go back to your Twisted Sister cd's.

  • This makes me wish I lived in the 70's dammit!!! Maynard is one of my idols when it comes to high note trumpet playing!!! Him, Wayne Bergeron, and Arturo Sandoval are my faves. GO MAYNARD!!!!!

  • Most epic intro ever in a song!!!

  • i need this in MP3 format. Can u share it? This is totally sick!

  • when I look at this video, all I can do is just sit and take some serious note. These early cats weren't no joke. This was that real, non sampled, all the way life stuff right here!

  • guitarist sounds like carlos santana during his solo

  • Comment removed

  • Who is that in the audience at the very end ? Geraldo ?

Why do people always have to get in silly discussions re whether MF was the best trumpet player ? Cracks me up.

Anyone who saw MF in his prime in the 70s ( I personally saw him maybe a dozen times ) knows that MF was all about the music. He wasn't trying to prove he was the best, that simply was not where his mind or heart or soul was at.

MF was a brilliant human being with a beautiful musical message for the world.

  • oh crap! wow!

  • the bass from 4:40 on kind of sounds like the music in mario when they're underground :]

  • I know, that bass on 4:40 was murdered!

  • Fukin A Erskine can PLAY!!

  • seen Maynard in 1979..i was 12..it was at some high school in il. i sat in the front row with my school jazz band.....those guys just blew me away...awesome

  • 2:55 is just fkn insane :-D

  • Anyone Know where i can find the guitar riff the dude behind the trumpet plays from 4:40 onwards?, cos it rocks,

Maybe its a riff from another song?

Think i unfortunately heard a similar riff raped by the scissor sisters at the start of their filthy gorgeous song...check it out it's a disastrous rendition..

  • Can someone tell me what's the name of the drummer?

  • PETER ERSKINE

  • actually, maynard ferguson is possibly the best modern trumpet player. I'm not sure of the name, but there was this guy who was first chair of the Chicago Wind Symphony Orchestra for around 50 years who was supposed to be the best, then during an interview. He said that he played with maynard a while back, and admitted that Maynard was better then him. Following the logic, Maynard Ferguson is supposedly the best.

  • You're thinking of Bud Herseth; it wasn't a wind symphony, that implies no string players. Both were top guys in each of their styles, it's almost like comparing Michael Jordan to Wilt Chamberlain...same sport (instrument), different positions (genres).

  • hehe, your right, i did mess up the name a bit :)

  • haha I love how you say that like you actually know. there is no best in anything there is always going to be someone better. Also they play the same instrument different genre.

  • you must know that to be false, there is always the best. It's not literally possible for there to ALWAYS be someone better, and it's also true that there will always be those considered the best in every age. Bud Herseth was supposed to be the best, but stated in an interview maynard ferguson is the best. following basic logic, you can assume that until someone is considered better then Herseth, Maynard is the best of the modern age.

Logical end of discussion (unless major flaw in brain).

  • Even if there was a "The Best" it would be irrelevant to the situiation you speak of, they they play two completely different genre's and stlyes.

  • it's relevant because it was stated by one of the two, that the other was better. That's like a genius biologist saying a genius chemist is better then him. Same instruments, so they each have a common basis for judgement. Bud Herseth MADE the judgement, not me, so take it up with him.

  • wow, no intelligent comment whatsoever, quite an achievement. Name someone better and we can talk.

  • He's the highest trumpet player I've ever heard. Far from the best or easiest to listen to, though.

This was the popular radio version. Much different from the version that was actually in the movie Rocky, which had almost all very low (below middle G) trumpet notes.

  • i wouldn't say "best" trumpet player in the world, but he was sure different.

  • I was lucky enough to see Maynard and his big band in Bloomington Il in about 77 or 78 and he was incredible. What a special talent he was and his "comeback" or pop breakthrough in the 70s was a great thing for jazz and for those who appreciate what he did so well. Thanks for the clip!

  • I saw him at Eastern Illinois in Charleston in '78. He and Chuck Mangione were the idols of our trumpet section. About as different as two players can get within the trumpet family. I had to admit to our former first chair, Alison who had quickly become first chair at EIU, that she was right. Technically Maynard completely blew away Chuck. We did, however, have suspicions that maybe MF was not that good with ordinary notes, so he picked up the high C's in his youth.

  • I also saw him at Ravinia around the turn of the century. He had a new bunch of pops and the music and his fan base had fallen apart. I learned that MF was "boy jazz" according to my wife. She had absolutely no interest in it.

  • Haha, he always had fans, and I know plenty of people who listen to him.

  • Maynard was the only person who could pull off dancing throughout an entire song... Before you could judge him, he'd get behind the mic and play 5 notes, successfully blowing your mind. I love that guy.

  • @MalevolentKoalaBear Oh, I dunno. Lenny Pickett could do it well enough.. Look up "Tower of Power Lenny Pickett"

  • It breaks my heart that we'll never see musicians like the Boss again. R.I.P.

  • holly mustaches and beards!

  • 2:40 TILL 2:58

    FANTASTIC~!!!!

  • I wish I could have seen Mayard live... He was the best trumpet player in the world

  • I love the part with the drum solo

    at 2:58

  • I got to meet Maynard in Corpus Christi Tx back in about "92 maybe "93, somewhere around that time, and he actually spent about 30 minutes with me and my buddy outside, after his show, just BSing like he was our buddy. Super cool Dude. RIP Maynard! You rock!

  • that is soooo awesome...u are amazingly lucky. Maynard forever!

  • He has a dark sound because of his lips, look how he is playing, not like normal trumpet players, nobody can play like him!!!

  • I like Luigi Mario's guitar solo. haha

  • Is that seriously his name ? lol or are you just calling him that because he looks like luigi ahaha

  • I saw Manynard for the first time in 1978 at Ole Miss to a packed house and it was an amazing show and in 1983 saw him again at the High School in New Albany, MS. There were only about 20 people there and Maynard played just as hard as the 1978 concert. Maynard was a class act.

  • Lol 1:27 its Super Mario on guitar

  • That's true xD

  • more like Freddy Mercury tbh

  • why does maynard have a dark sound?? it sounds almost like a trombone playing extremely high

  • It seems to me that you have no knowledge of trumpet playing and much less equipment. Maynard played a large bore trumpert 468 in combination with a large throat on his mouthpiece a 16 or 17 , this was during the late 70's. He later went to an 18 throat when joing whith Monette. The large throat on the mp and large horn combination gives the tpt a dark spound, but also is a very free blowing sound, that requires breath control , lots of air power which of course Maynard had....

  • ive been playing trumpe for 3 years. and i wasnt aware that there was a combination to why maynards wound was dark. but thanks for the info

  • wow what happened to this kind of music. i love it

  • This is music. Shame no mainstream bands play like this now.

  • yeeahhh :)))))))

  • lolololololol

  • Comment removed

  • It's a picolo, moron...

  • vc vai morre de tanto assoprakkkkkkk

  • THe derek version is better but this guy rocks!
