I was lucky enough to own a brand new R5GT Turbo D552EDH in 1986, it could be a pain in the arse and after a bit of tuning by BBR it went like a rocket! Happy days;)
Icon of a car but so many issues. Hot starting carb problems, clutch cable as long as a python snake that snapped. More of problem was in a crash. You could flex the doors in and out with your bare hands!
I had one in 1987. The air cooled turbo version (86) ,so it wouldn't start when it was hot, the throttle cable used to disconnect, the clutch ratchet used to slip, the drivers seat snapped (under extreme pressure though), and there was only one make of tyres then and they were expensive...........for all that I loved it
the only problem i had on gt turbo the clutch cable would snap. overall a blinding fun motor to drive mine was pearl white on a e reg the update version
had 1988 gt turbo loved it .. super chipped it ..... stainless exhausted it.. lowered it ... crashed it.... still have fond memories of these little pushrod 1.4s .. racing pug 1.9s , RS turbos and GTis .. was quick even by todays standard.. HAPPY DAYS
its right what your saying about the owners i was at a car show a few years back when a dick with a r5gtt was sat reving the tits off it over and over for half an hour when there was a large bang and lots of smoke and oil there must have been 500 people cheer, another nice car gone because it was abused.
on my third. one in advert is a phase one, my first car. you gotta be prepared to keep ahead of the breakdowns and not drive like a nutter all the time...just occasionally...
best cars, there only unreliable if there touched, im on me 4th gt turbo and ive never really had any problems. Drive them properly and there good cars, better than a lot of the other shitty hatchbacks out
yes they re awsome cars i would like to have one but for first car i think that would be impossible my father dont like old cars the car as 21 years old but is awsome
get one as a side project if you restore or modify, ive just bought the reanault 5 1.4 non turbo and tht set me back £200 haha there the cheaper option
its a campus prima 1.4, was a non turbo but ended up putting the turbo 1.4 engine in. Considering upgrading soon to having the 172 clio cup engine in (1.8)
that was a phase one, i had a pearl white phase one on a d plate. impressivly quick when running right. kinda had a hovvering sensation on full boost like on a cushion of air. got a j plate phase 2 now not as quick but not for long...
Hey Mickey,I to had a problem with my ignition pack when I had it,they where in the worse place possibly on the 5 turbo, right slap bang above the turbo and all those of you who ripped the sheild off the turbo to help cool it down didnt help the poorly placed ignition pack, lol.I move mine behind the scuttle once I clocked its positioning problem, but still the hottest hatch around at the time, saying that a standard one could still hold its own today with all these lard arsed so called hot hatches
Shame the 1.4 pushrod block dates back to the 1950's, exhaust and inlet manifolds are on the same side of the head... I think the design actually pre-dates petrol. To start it you have to rub sticks together. The 205Gti 1.9, Astra GTE and Escort RS Turbo were technically better cars, but the R5 GTT still has a place in my heart, brutally fast for it's day.
Unrelible ??,nah, dont think so,only if you put shit oil in em and dont stick to the 6k oil/filter change,Had a black 88 plate tweeked to 165bhp,side exit exhaust and early clio 16v wheels, bought it with 22k on sold it to a mate with 70k miles on it still with its original untouched turbo then bought it back of him 2 years later with 89k on it still with the original factory turbo, oil used throughout it whole life was Mobil 1 5w/30 and it was driven the way it should of been, proper pocket rocket
I remember this ad, I was just a sprog , when I grew up(questionable), I bought one, same as the ad , in black , phase 1, that was years ago, wish I still had it...Thanks for posting.
i would love moving in a 5 like that.

I had a phase 2 when I was 21 years old, i'm 35 now and it 's still the most fun car I've ever owned.
Grey, tsw venoms, full scorpion, gt tuning dump valve, lowered, pipercross.
It was the bollocks :-) pig to work on though.
