  • jeg bliver helt overvældet. over at jeg elsker IRISK musik så meget. Har selv boet lidt udenfor Dublin i et par år.

  • jeg elsker dem.

  • Sharon Shannon on the box, superb!!

  • WOOT!!!!

  • Mike and his music changed my life for ever, in 1986!

Cheers! to all his fans around the world.

  • This is a lock-out version of this song. After this, it's over. Because no one will ever top this...

...Except maybe The Waterboys, some other night :-)

  • you can see as well the great Sharon Shannon playing!

  • As an Irish man May I add there are no finer people in the world than the Scots and the Welsh, honest people.

  • Mike was born in Scotland with Irish roots and has lived in Ireland since nappies, also regards himself as scots/Irish.

  • haha. i sang this for a music festival. it was less....uh high tempo but this is fun!!

  • Mike Scott reminds me of Craig Ferguson in this vid. He is absolutley brilliant. I love his voice with it's Irish inflections and feeling he puts in his songs. True greatness.

  • @datsyhoehoe My friend, you need to know that Mike Scott is Scottish....sorry.

  • @tonkertim Haha, Okay! Fair enough. I STILL love him, and I love SCOTMENS even more! I assumed he was Irish because of his accent, which I'm no expert at, and because of the words to "Island man". He said" Ireland is my heart". Sorry, I'm a Texas girl, so I hope you let me slide. ;)

  • @datsyhoehoe Hey Any friend of the Waterboys is a friend of mine!

  • I must say, this is the second best version.... Of course the first one is the Scafell Pike one, which is very rare I know and not possible to hear here on You Tube unfortunately. I will try to post it soon.

  • @levediagyermeke still waiting for your post.

  • God, Mike Scott! You make my Irish flare up somethin' terrible! I'm almost sad to be from TEXAS, and that's no small thing. I love , love, love Mike Scott. His Irish enflections and theatrical gravelly voice. What a genius! Thanks Waterboys!

  • Mom always warned of the "Gypsies and Unknown Tinkers".

  • Raggle Taggle is a term used in Ireland for a person who is all over the place, lives rough just doesnt give a fuck.

  • Hi, please somebody can help me??? I can´t understand.

what is Raggle Taggle? maybe somebody could say to me please. I really don´t understand, because I really want know please, thanks for your help... i hope you can help me, thanks again

  • @LabDlMin1 , official definitions below:

"of an odd or heterogeneous mixture; motley"; "motley or unkempt"; "untidy and scruffy"; "Being miscellaneous, heterogeneous, motley, sundry or assorted" - hope that helps! ;-)

but to me, it makes me think of scruffy but in a colourful, mismatched and interesting way. It doesn't really have negative connotations in my mind, it seems to imply a sort of free spirited way of living and dressing, a little wild - mainly from this song I guess!

  • Great performance!

  • Love this used to sing it in junior school!

  • god bless you mike

  • Mike Scott is almost like Mick Jagger but of folk music instead of rock and pop!

What a brilliant version of this song. Love Sharon Shannon and the fiddle player..excellent stuff. Invokes ideas of an old time England which we will never ever get back.......

  • really better version if this song: /watch?v=uOoaNi4xvv0

  • check out 'Raplje raggle taggle gypsy' Much better!!!

  • I didn't like it at first because i was used to a more solemn version but it's growing on me !! It's wicked and i love his voice

  • celtic thunders better

  • LOVE IT....

  • Seriously??? YOu people are being so immature...If people want to like Celtic Thunder, GET THE HELL OVER IT!!! People have different tastes in music...GET USED TO IT!!!

  • why did it have to cut there, i wanted to see the interview in the woodland glade :(

  • Me too. She really is the Jimi Hendrix of squeezebox!

  • check out standrewstv/music free scottish album

  • i have a love/hate relationship with folkpop

  • Awesome! I love this song. This is probably the basis of Gaelic Storm's Scalliwag, as the melody is very similar and has similar content. That's a great song as well.

  • I love this song a lot

  • great music

  • I DO LOVE THIS SONG! Could someone please put "Island Man" (or is it "Islandman"?) on Youtube? That song has been haunting me for years - having been to Wales, England and Scotland (only Ireland awaits!!) I used to have it on cassette. Cheers from Canada....

  • Oh, I love this song! 'Had the album on cassette....waaay back when. Cheers from Canada.

  • if i ever had a band, this is how i would like them to sound , brilliant!

  • absolutely amazing..... one of my college tutors played in this band :D

  • great performance (as usual) and I'm in love with sharon shannon's constant smile. I hope she never stops doing that~

  • Friggin BRILLIANT!!.....LOVE the "Room to Roam" Album....Good in ya Mike Scott & Crew!!.....

  • yeah! my kinda thing decent music sung by guys with heart! yeah!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • cool

  • this warms my spirit ....

  • Why are you all getting offended over world history/politics, and Celtic Thunder? This video is the Waterboys, who've done a great job with this song. The live recording here is rather good, too. I grew up listening to their music, and I love this group quite a bit. Why fight?

  • It might be folk music, but man, these dudes f****ing rock!!! Long live Mike and the boys!!! God bless!!

  • I came upon this to listen to one of my all time favourite tunes and find the comments have been abducted by a complete bunch of moronic, spouting, fuckwits. Go forth and dont multiply you bunch of opinionated shit-stirring cunts.....

  • @Iclimbthereforeiam you are not going to use profanity to call others and acted like you are better than all others.. who are u!? yes , this is not the forum, but if someone posted something wrong it is not to go without being answered.. You are worse than those try to post their opinions... it is free country, so wake up and smell something. you are not going to tell others what to do...

  • I love the Water Boys!

  • Comment removed

  • sheer class

  • Actually just listened to a band called maddogmacree and they're version is the better one.

  • Comment removed

  • @newrycelticbhoy sorry but this version is way better

  • celtic thunder is the best and most original

  • @IzAbEllaStElla1001

its THE WATERBOYS for gods sake their class !!! are you biast to little celtic thunder boys with chisled jaws ;-)

  • @IzAbEllaStElla1001 I know, right? They don't take it too slow!

  • Waterboys with Sharon Shannon! What more do you want you crying asshole.Enjoy!

  • I must agree that this is one of the better versions of this song that I have heard. It has a degree of soul and emotion the other version lack. it captures the meaning of the words. I'm not bashing the artists who perform this. Their versions have their own merits, but none of them quite capture the raw emotion like this.

  • celtic thunder???? aka plastic paddys,,,,,, bet you've a shamrock tee-shirt,, a penchant for spuds and drink green dyed guinnes too, u muppits. bejaysus.

celtic bloody thunder indeed u scutterin gobsheen.

  • yep its a scottish song and a scottish band......not irish.

  • @seonidh

Actually It's a Irish variant of an British collection of songs all with the same theme, sung by a band whose musicians come from all over Britian.

  • this is how this song should be sung!!!

    celtic thunder my bollix

  • this version suck sounds like it's going more to the rock side of things where as the celtic thunder version is keeping it traditional

  • @chalmacu totally agree i like the celtic thunder version better

  • @chalmacu

You must be joking? Celtic Thunder is about as far removed from Trad. Folk as is humanly possible.

  • then I want to learn this one

  • The three who didn't like should be killed by the Raggle Taggle Gypsy, O!

  • Is that Sharon Shannon?

  • why do people keep calling this Irish, this is a Scottish song, from the Scottish borders. Also this is a Scottish band, get your facts right. Dumb Irish.

  • @liamag92 not all irish are dumb i for one am part irish and i am not dumb

  • @liamag92

Maybe you should get your facts right. No one knows exactly where this song came from. Some say it's an old English ballad about a lord who's lady is kidnapped by gypsies. It would be nice to find out for sure where it came from tho.

  • @dstudie1 your an idiot.

Most historians agree it is a Scottish border ballad, there is no evidence to claim its an English ballad - only that it is a popular English folk song also. It is a Border Ballad, and that fag said it was 'Irish', thats not Scotland is it.

  • @liamag92 Sheesh, name calling. What's wrong with you? You should play nice. You get a better discussion that way. Show me proof it's Scottish and not English or Irish. Proof, that's all I'm asking for. I researched this and found no solid proof either way. No one knows who wrote it. If you know for certain, with facts who wrote it, I'd dearly love to see them. Otherwise, accept there is the possibility you could be wrong.

  • @dstudie1 why dont you argue with the other guy who said the song was Irish - because there is more proof that is is Scottish:

The ballad was first recorded in Nithsdale, now located in Dumfriesshire Scotland in 1814. The Gypsy Laddie is ballad number 200 in the collection, and Child describes that the printed versions of this ballad probably date back to at least 1720 and is traditional Scottish folk tune.

Enough proof to know for sure its not Irish. Now fuck off and try your bullshit elsewhere

  • @liamag92 Man, you are one arrogant piece of whale shit. See, I can get in the gutter with you, you maggot. You are the kind of person one loves to screw over. You still haven't proven anything about this song one way or the other. Now you fuck off ass wipe.

  • @dstudie1 wow your insults are pretty poor, whale shit; ass wipe - thats some nickelodeon shit. Judging by your weak use of insults I'm gonna guess your a little faggot that thinks he is a big man over the internet - well guess again because your just a faggot - on the internet. You've proven nothing other than telling me I'm wrong. Your obv an fag American who thinks he knows it all. Now go fuck yourself and stop commenting on all the Raggle Taggle videos claiming its English causing fights.

  • @liamag92 I really do love pissing you off you goat fucker. Faggot? Now that's REALLY childishly Nickelodeon. It could be an English ballad. No matter what you say I will say it's English or Irish because you mean absolutely nothing to me you eurotrash other than pure sport. As for causing fights, it's what I love to do best. I'd kick your weak little Euro ass liamfag. It still could be Irish as Irish Gaels helped colonized Scotland centuries ago so anything Scottish is ipso facto Irish.

  • @dstudie1 every lol at this fag. I like how you assume I'm Scottish, when I'm not. You've not pissed me off, but I clearly have pissed your stupid wine-sipping communist faggot disgusting ass off. Considering your an American who picks and chooses when hes a intellectual & whens hes an asshole, I'm going to continue guessing you suck your dads cock & that you are filthy hippie faggot he likes to act big on the internet. You are probably one of these Americans who thinks he is Irish lol.

  • @liamag92 So really liamfag, how old are you really? 10 and love to use what you perceive to be adult language? You are just sad, sad, sad. I'll keep this up just as long as you continue to answer back. You haven't pissed me off. You've actually made me very happy. You've given me something to answer to. Your ignorance, intolerance and stupidity. BTW, I never assumed you were Scottish. Just a weak little Euro who needs America to abuse to make you seem important. Surprise, you're not.

  • @dstudie1 Correction - I should probably say she right? Juding by the way you handle yourself and acting ignorant in an attempt to get a rise from me your either a lonely fat girl who fills the void by eating twinkies & picking fights over youtube, or a pissy little 13 year old thats just worked out how to override daddy's firewall settings. I lold at you 'kicking my ass', you'd prob be all like "its just a joke MAN!" with your neurotic whiney american accent that the world hates.

  • @liamag92 Awe, liamfag. Never assume anything. If the world hates America liamfag, it's because we are strong and free despite what the fascists in the White House and the rest of the puny world thinks. It's always America who has to go save everyone else when the get themselves into messes like WWI, WWII, and the current world situation. We've given the world computers, cell phones, television, CD, DVD, satellites, and the internet while the rest of the world is still in the dark ages.

  • @dstudie1 your stupidity amazes me. If it wasn't for Europe, America wouldn't even exist:

Computers - Invented by Charles Babbage (British)

Mobile Telephone - Invented by Reginald Fessenden (Canadian)

Television - John Logie Baird (British)

DVD - Sony Int. Research Team (Japanese)

Satellites - No one invented Satellites dumb-shit it is a term for many things, but Sats in the way you mean - Russians actually were the first to make & launch. You really are a stupid fuck aren't you hahaha.

  • @dstudie1 i missed your world war II reference lol, but i'll destroy that also:

The United States did little to the war effort, the fact the "US" saved Europe is something that only Americans are taught to believe, in the rest of the world we are correctly taught that it was actually the Soviet Union that was the main reason Nazi Germany was defeated. Do you realise you are a joke to the rest of the world? "America saved the world again" lol, what a joke, your about as brainwashed as they come.

  • @liamag92 Ok, U don't know as much you claimed. American came to Asia & saved the SE Asia from Japan's invasion, then rebuilt those countries without permanently occupy them & split them in half, as Russian did to Germany & Berlin & colonized East Europe. Amer. is not perfect (no one is), but most American are generous, open minded. It is indeed is land of opportunity. So many Americans died in Normandy? the world loves to beat & trash on America, if it is so bad, why is so many try to come here?

  • @CJoanLin lol "America came n saved tha world". No, Britain was fighting in SE Asia much longer than the Americans were. "...saved Asia, then rebuilt those countries". I'm sure the residents of Hiroshima would disagree. The reason people come to your country (and mine) is because their own nations are shit, and our countries are opportunities for them to live in peace. Youve got a really simplified view of WWII & life if you think what you said is actual fact.

  • @liamag92 I didn't say Britain didn't do a great in WWII, but it's not perfect, remember Opium War?nuke Hiroshima was not right..how about Nan-king & Shanghai Massacre, didn't the world just turn their back & pretend not see?! did anyone acknowledge it? End doesn't justify the means & Not that Japan got it coming, but when 1 started a war, 1lose the right 2 choose how it ends. Amer.'s policy isn't always right, it's up 2 hist&debate. I'm choose positive 2 all nations, hope u do the same..

  • @CJoanLin I have no problem with the US, or Americans. I do have a problem with the many ignorant Americans that state their opinion though it is fact, simplify world events to seem like the US is some sort of white knight, the whole "US saved tha world" stuff you hear around the internet (in reference specifically to WWI/WWII) but more and more in reference to Iraq/Afghanistan, where the UK did a large portion of the fighting (especially in Afghan).

  • this is sooooo cool! These guys are Awesome!! whooo

  • this is great version, also is the one by Dahm the Bard, it on Utube, have a listen:)

  • fuckin brill

  • This version kicks ass.

  • My mother read me this as a poem when I was a little girl... it is a very fond memory. I can remember how excited I was when I first heard this song on an album and realised that it was this poem!

  • I like this version very much. hadnt been aware waterboys did folk.

  • i like Rapalje´s version much more!

  • Seanyseanybean is right. Y'need to be rough, not clean for this kind of song.

  • Celtic thunder fans...with all due respect. This is the real deal. I just watched the celtic thunder version to be informed and it opens with a young boy singing. I am sorry, but he does not look like he would know what lying in a meadow with your love would be like. While their voices are fine and varied it does not have the passion that the Waterboys bring. I am surprised really as Celtic Thunder seem almost like a boy band. Waterboys are who you want to see in a smoky club singing this sone.

  • @canuckowl holly shit exactly my thoughts!

  • Mike Scott + Steve Wickham + any other combination = very very good!

  • Finally a video where Shannon doesn't have that stupid sponge, just the stupid grin.

  • only a musician could get away with wearing the coat the fiddle player is wearing - how I envy them!

  • LOVE THIS SONG :-)

  • Perfect timing for me, since yesterday was St. Paddys' Day!! And, I'm Irish as Paddys' P. :) With a name like Michael Patrick, if I didn't like this, I should hand in my Irish Pub Card!! LOL

  • fantastic and beautifully rendered! Yo!

  • incredible

  • fantastic version, sharon shannon also maks this song

  • fantastic!!!!!!

    feet going for it

  • @CelticThunderfan1 Aye, I agree wit' ya's there! But comin' from England I can't get hold'uv Celtic Thunder's music!?!

  • @natashabedingfield04 im from america i like this dont get me wrong but i prefer celtic thunder's version a little bit better

  • @CelticThunderfan1 aye celtic thunder is a good band better then this group i have 1 of there cd's and dvd's it's called cetic thunder the show so if u don't already have it go to the shops and see if they have it and get it it's a good buy if u can get it

  • @chalmacu i have 2 cds celtic thunder act two and celtic thunder take me home and i have the celtic thunder the show dvd as well :D

  • el mejor grupo celta de la historia

    YO AMO WATERBOYS .

    I LOVE WATERBOYS .

    VIVA WATERBOYS.

    GENIAL.

  • This is wonderful! FYI I love Celtic Thunder too. Believe it or not you can like both at the same time. If you don't like it dint listen to it!

  • @oliviabradshaw88

    Love Celtic Thunder!

  • ever tried to cover "wonderfull disguise" christ its hard!

  • underthestarofnorth...think thats sharon shannon playn the box, theres a band called 'Mundy' that do a great cover of the galway girl with her(originally done by american folk singer Steve earl-which is me fav song ever) def worth a listen!!

  • pure genious!

  • I love this version. One of the best ones I've heard. Anything else you'd recommend, that this band plays?

  • everything that they have ever recorded !

  • red army blues

  • You'd love the same tune with Carlos Nunez on gaita and Paddy Keenan on uilleann pipes. Explosive...;0)))

  • listen to their song 'fisherman blues'...my favourite-hope ya like it

  • @underthestarofnorth yes-The Whole Of The Moon (not in the same musical vein but beautiful) A man Is In Love, Fisherman's Blues, When Will We Be Married, This Is The Sea.

There's lots out there covering a wide range of sounds from jkazzy to celtic to early 80's brit sound and more

  • To me this is Irish (actually Scottish) music at its best.....not that overproduced polished sound of Celtic thunder give me THIS over that ANY DAY!!

I always laugh when I see Celtic thunder...its for family's and old women!

  • haha thats right! this here goes straigth to the heart

  • Your correct its a border ballad from the Scottish borders. Great song.

  • For my school drama, i was in the band, me and some of my mates wrote lyrics for the play, but the same tune. All the little kids treated us like celebrites cause we had electric intruments lol. Great song.

  • i never though damian could sound better but if u listen to this dude first then listen to damian-wow damian sounds amazing

  • Mike Scott and Sharon Shannon - SUPERB! EXCELLENT!

  • this is such a powerful song, over 200 years old. love it

  • one of the best versions of this song ever, mike scotts' voice just suited this this song

  • Brilliant indeed ... saw them many times in Montreal, back with the original lineup. One of THE best bands live, ever. Mike Scott is all talent, a sincere and ferocious musician. Lovely to see Sharon Shannon as well!

  • two versions as different as night and day my friend. to say celtic thunder's version outshines the waterboys is ludicrous. if anything the waterboys version is the one that will grab ya. celtic thunder comes across as a 'pbs' produced version that my parents would enjoy. long live the waterboys!!

  • got to agree with you :-)

  • Comment removed

  • there is no way in hell does Celtic Thunder do it better????

I've just listened to lots of Celtic Thunder and they sound off with everything? they murder Caledonia.

  • Celtic Thunder version is total wank. The waterboys verion has balls, something folk needs. Not the over produced, something for everyone boyband spectacle of Celtic Thunder.

  • @seanyseanybean mad dog mcrea version is best in my opinion...

  • @seanyseanybean

i just watched celtic thunder, and it aint even worth a wank,

    lol

  • @seanyseanybean Mike Scott is brilliant

  • @seanyseanybean

definitely agree. i was so pissed when i t urned on that celtic thunder band. thats not what this music is about. it is supposed to have some feeling behind it. above all else, its about the fucking feeling, man!

  • @seanyseanybean I like this version as well. but you do not need bashing the Celtic Thunder. that is a cheap shot. CT is a wonder band.. not a boyband.. they are pretty manly, I will say. and it is show and entertainment, it also fulfill the cultural ambassador missions. A song could be sung in different way and each has its own merit. The CT version is high energetic and fun.. and introduce some traditional music instrument.. you should embrace it and not knock it

  • @CJoanLin Your definition of 'pretty manly' and 'traditional' differ greatly from mine, but I can assure you that Celtic Thunder are neither. And if five, male, ponces, dressed identically, grinning pathetically whilst managing to sing without a single drop of genuine emotion doesn't make a boyband, then I don't know what does.

  • @seanyseanybean Not so fast. I'm not those teenagers screaming 4 Damien/Keith,I'm the older gen. likes Choir groups dress in uniform&sing in harmony without jumping &screamin&yellin like they're out of control.CT is 4 family entertainment.it's not for 'everyone',but it works 4 me. It intro.me 2 Irish songs. It's not fair 4 U 2 label them.U don't hve 2 like CT,it's ur choice, but call them what they aren't jst not right.&don't knock old people, ur folks would be jst as old & U will be old 1 day 2

  • where is the interview that seems to happen at the end?

  • well played!

  • sharon shannon playing too!

  • Brilliant - brings me back years - Dock Martins and a Waterboys T- shirt was the dress code - happy days !

  • with Sharon Shannon on the box
