Perhaps we need to take away the right of corporations to have personhood under the law, if they are unwilling to be put in jail and have their assets frozen.... if a person comits a crime they go to jail, if a corporation comits a crime people in it go to jail... could a corporation be sent to jail for ill will... and if so when god when will it happen. When will a corporation get a life sentence for knowingly comiting homicide, such as the coke bottling plants in south america.
This presupposes a consumer capable of recognizing that Juicy Juice isn't actual juice, though it says 100% juice on the label. It's a juice product. In other words: When most people are stupid, marketing wrecks this whole idea. Look for the same products to have similar labels to the new products.
Good point Grapefruity. If corporations are driven solely by profit, isn't it reasonable to assume consumers are driven solely by value? When you only make 25k-30k per year and have a family to feed, you are going to buy whatever is cheapest because above all else there is the need to survive.
But the difference between an individual and a corporation is that individuals are not legally bound to the stockholders' will.
alright, maybe I disagree with the idea that consumer behaviour can change due to enviornmental consciousness, but Tom Szaky is awesome - it's companies like his Terracycle that are making the biggest difference.
The contradiction that this speech ignores is this: if corporations can only be expected to be driven solely by profit, then why are individuals expected to make financial decisions on any basis other than saving money? Die-hard capitalism is admirable in its rigid adherence to Smithian doctrines of the invisible hand, but if the lines of production and distribution remain unregulated, say goodbye to the environment. Any thoughts?
