We don't work 24 hours a day/7 days a week. base pay might be 17,000 for the lowest ranking but most pay is a lot more than 17,000. you are forgetting BAH, BAS, hazardous duty pay and all of the perks that go along with being military- 30 days paid leave a year, tuition assistance, GI Bill, full dental and medical. Military is sweet.

@bionicwaffleiron I was in the US Army Infantry. I figured out my total benefits to be 43k/year as an E4. And we did work 24/7, 7 days a week when deployed. Mortar rounds don't care if you're in the rack. Last time I checked, teachers don't have to worry about being killed, paralyzed, blinded, deafened, or suffer a TBI and become depressed, an alcoholic, or beat your spouse. Not whining. Just saying that we were all in the military, but the conditions were not the same for all service members.

@megatron515 i think teachers get paid enough too. this isn't to say that teachers deserve more than mil members. they don't. benefits for both are excellent. it's a volunteer force though so if someone doesn't think the pay is worth it, they don't have to sign up. my husband is a fire fighter and could die during a training exercise if something went wrong. He's also a volunteer on the outside- putting his life at risk for free. everyone would love more money but he's content.

Since 1970 unions have regularly increased teacher salaries, but test performance has not changed until recently when they went down. Tenure gives senior teachers no need to excel since they've "made it" and it is almost impossible to fire a union teacher. Unlike the military, where I've seen 18 year CSM get booted for DUIs and promotions held back for PT scores. That is the difference.

Spend most of the time sitting down, talking or doing paperwork. Have unbeatable benefits. Great pension plans. sounds closer to a politician but without all of the corporate money for campaigns...

@therealist1057 When I left the Navy as an E-4 in 2004 I was making $21,768 a year in just base pay. If you figure in sea pay and Submarine pay that came to $28,118 not too bad at 24 huh? Plus free housing and food. If it wasn't for the lack of liberty it might have been a sweet deal.

Everyone compares what firefighters make in California. They need to start looking in other regions. In the Tampa Bay area, the average starting pay for a firefighter is around 35k. Some pay into their own pension. Firefighters pay are going to be affected by the type and cost of living in those areas. Also a majority of firefighters are EMTs/Paramedics. Especially in Florida.
