All he's really doing is skipping the step of addition. Which, if you cannot add as accurately or quickly in your head as he does, will pose quite a challenge. It really comes back to understanding the basics first.

I happen to be very good at math and solving big numbers using your method just doesn't click. You have to memorize a bunch of steps and apply them. When I do stuff like that, I solve it using the same steps done on paper without paper and pencil/calculator of course.
