  • Great lesson. Thanks Justin!

  • hell thats a stratocaster!

  • Hi, I'm not sure but doesn't the f sound good in this lick because, even though it looks like you're in the 1st box of the e minor pentatonic the root not is actually the b, so the f, becomes the blue note rather than the flat second?

  • Hi Justin,

I have been meaning to ask if you would be so kind as to make a video on how to use the harmonic minor scale. My favorite guitarist is Slash and I've noticed that he plays a lot of the fast runs in the Godfather solo in the harmonic minor scale. If you could demonstrate some of those runs and how to use the scale to incorporate into other songs I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks :)

  • Great job as always Justin! Keep up the great work your vids are really helpful for a guy like me that plays strictly by ear

  • What scale is the 13th fret from??

  • @Strat0Blues A BUUUUNCH, depends always on the context. But the 13th fret is an F note, so it really is from any scale that has F in it.

  • 5:20 Fuck Yeah!

  • Justin... The "wrong" note actually does have some logic to why its there. Its an old school technique of playing the blues scale of the fifth (B) over the one (E) chord. Similar to how Freddie King would mix major and minor Pentatonic together. This was a favorite of Jimmy Rogers and also found in Muddy Water's early electric stuff. Cheers, and keep up the great lessons!

  • @jimigrunge The wrong note is a flat second, it really doesn't belong to either the major or minor pentatonic scales, it could work just because of simple chromaticism. If you were to land on F while playing a minor pentatonic progression, a dorian minor progression, etc, it would sound bloody awful.

  • Justin, your lessons are totally priceless, thanks a million for your time.

    Somewhere in SouthTexas.

  • Can't find his lesson on the roll technique, anyone help?

  • Hi Justin

I’m just curious. Is that the good old red strat with new pickguard and new pickups or is it a new one?

  • @ras3cue old one with new pickguard and kinmann pickups.

  • Ahhh I recognise that note from another song. Excellent!

  • Verey Cool =! Muito legal..! In Portuguese language of Brazil. God bless you!

  • The ending... loved it.

  • new pickups omg

  • put it in G add some big bends and texas flood here we go!! lol

  • "Wrong-un"? Oh-boy.... HAHA

  • man i wish i could play that fast and clean

  • Great lesson as always Justin but to get close to the authentic tone SRV delivered, you really have to have heavier strings, tune down half a step & attack the living shit out of the lick....As we do in everything the great man played! :)

  • Dorian with a splash of Phrygian

  • the f is simply a b9 scale degree... V7b9 chords usually resolve to minor one chords or pick another flavor

  • Brilliant! thank you! just a question, the F# note, is that in the G major scale? or is it just an extension to the e minor. I am really confused with how the minor pentatonic relates to the major scale.

  • Thanks for all your videos, great !

  • Someone posted you should have your own T.V. program....I totally agree...

  • Thanks for the lick Justin, I love SRV and this lick is my favourite :]

  • Been playing this riff for years hoping someone could explain the theory behind it. Still puzzled by the F note but Stevie himself knew no theory and only played from his heart

  • how would I want to know what you mean, but hell I'm Russian ...

  • man, it's good but a little bit short to work on it that long. would you send some long licks that we can work on it in more detail? you provide great effort to teach such licks but this 8 minute long working a bit long for this lick I suppose :P right?

  • @turkogluturk81 and I always appreciate your support on us, thank you man! thanks a lot!

  • @turkogluturk81 and I found lots of uploaded videos of you showing detailed stuff... sorry for bad comment buddy ;)

  • Justin I've been following your Facebook and you said you were planning on learning URL or website design (don't know what to call it). Love the new 'intro' page on every new Youtube video you are putting up. Are you planning to overhaul/re-design your website anytime? Anyway thanks as always for your lessons!

  • That's an odd looking Tele, Justin...

  • @MunterE oops :) I must learn to tell the difference.

  • AWESOME VIDEO AND JOB/LESSON,

    APPLAUSE AND FIVE STARS

  • GREAT TONE AND EXPLANATIONS, but stevie used to play this kinda lick over the V chord in the chord progression so it's actually a lick from b blues pentatonic, there's nothing wrong with it, simply he was followng the chord progression :) sorry for my english XD
