  • I find it amazing that he has screamed like this all these years and still has that beautiful clean voice as well... a lot of other vocalists would have tons of vocal nodules/hoarse voice/lost their voice completely.

  • This guy is a fucking superhuman I tell you, he's been "screaming" like this for about 20 years now and his voice is still intact and better than ever.

  • DEFILING THE LIVING

  • 0:18 did he hurt his back ?

  • @l9a3u Nein. Ever notice how some singers kind of bend down when they shout long, sustained words? That's essentially what he's doing, only he's not doing that, he's doing what he's doing instead.

  • Protip: Go to more metal concerts. And when you're there, fucking scream your throat out until you can't speak the next day. Repeat as often as your body is physically capable. Not only are you supporting your favorite bangs, but you'll develop metal piped in no time so long as you're really trying. Flatten that stomach, compress that diaphragm, and force the sound out until you're afraid the pressure will cause an aneurysm. Then take a sip of beer while they set up for the second song.

  • @7j8i9m I'm not saying your method doesn't work, but your method is the equivalent of learning how to lift heavy things with only your back. Sure, you might eventually develop a super strong back one day and are capable of lifting heavy things using only your back. It's also very likely you'll do permanent damage to your spine, which could be avoided if you just learn to use your legs to lift the right way(learn to sing the right way).

  • ild kill to have that vocal and his clean too..

  • I'd love to learn that technique of his. Every time I try this so-called "yelling," it fucks up my throat for days.

  • i always see a monkey when i hear his screaming vocals. i always see some monkey doing crazy crap... oh wait, this is devin townsend, he is a monkey! love ya dev

  • Sounds like that leapy fast zombie from Half-Life 2

  • ...how does that not kill his vocal cords.

  • @misaamane111

Tons of practice, correct technique, being genetically 1/3 bear.

  • and I know that you belong to meeeee, every night, you suddenly apeeeeear in my eyes, it happens when I sleep, it isn't right what I dooooo-hoooo in my dreams with youuuuu

  • I wonder his balls did not explode

  • Devour is the first song I heard by SYL. I love it to pieces.

  • @RandomJackOfDoom me too! now devin is my god. all because that song. and his solo stuff is so amazing.

  • he kinda sounds like Chuck on The Sound of Perseverance but not as good:P

  • Sounds like Sam Kinison doing a stand up routine

  • watching this gives me a sore throat...

  • what an angelic voice :D

    haha XD

i love seeing stuff filmed during recordings :)

  • I LOVE DEVIN!!! :)

  • VERYcool! How did you end up with this??

  • i had one of them but the wheel fell off

  • What song is this?

  • It's Devour. Kinda wierd without the music :D

  • Devour

  • "GET OFF MY LAAAAWN!!"

  • I'd love to do that unexpectedly in the middle of a church, i'd pmsl!

  • hah! a church!

I was thinking of places i could practice my screams and it looks like i've found a winner!

  • lol

  • I'm a christian and a metalhead, so if I can learn to do that, Il do it in my church and film it for you :P

  • Wow, you do that in church and post it and you will be a hero. Like, full stop. Nobody will be able to debate your hero-status.

  • Do it mate that would be epic! :D

  • In the end, you can hear "a". xD

  • 00:14 "ONE HUNDRED THAT FARTS! ONE HUNDRED THAT PARTS!" Thats our devy.

  • And then afterwards "ONE HUNDRED THAT FARTED IN HELLL!"

  • ONE HUNDRED FARTED IT HURT**

  • I don't know...There's something about the "arm-behind-the-back" method that cranks out some of the nastiest vocals made. I don't know what it is... It just is...

  • i don't completely know but on that final scream he leans back and pushing his chest out with his head tilted air. this opens up the lungs apperantly..there for better vocal timings

  • it puts you in a good posture so that your chest is more open for more airs and instead of lifting yout head you look down for more compression.

  • he's just so damn intense.

  • sorry but, I don't know the song he's preforming vocals on in this clip..

can anyone tell me what song it is?

  • Devour from SYL's album Strapping Young Lad.

  • it's way better on the album, and the live dvd version too. higher and harder!

  • This guy does great death screams/growls.

  • i like his screams alot more, i dont care to much for growling

  • Good God! A person shouldn't be able to do something like that! Fucking awesome! I cringe everytime it sounds so painful, but so fucking awesome!

  • I swear Devour didn't sound like that XD

  • Does anybody know how to do his Melodic Growling stuff?

You know, where he sings controlled high notes while throwing his lungs out.

  • EVERYTIME I hear this I cringe...

    It sounds like it hurts!!

  • keep in mind the scream used the audo of a tiny crappy mic insice a camcorder...imagine how much better it sounds through a professional mic with wind screen, probably running to a soundboard and a recording program/system.

  • he's incredible at what he does

  • Sounds like Devour off of SYL.

  • it is devour

  • it used to be? wtf man, it still is, he always used a wide variety of vocal styles, and still does tremendous clean vocals.

  • this is a small portion of one song of one of his projects.

  • There are 5 SYL albums, and this is 25 seconds.

Of course it doesn't display everything he can do.

  • check out some of the devin townsend band stuff as opposed to syl. he uses clean vocals a lot in that stuff. still shrieks but more clean

  • Um, you wanna reread my post again?

  • it wasnt a reply to you it was a reply back seat romeo.

  • I got an email...

I declare youtube is retarded. I retract my angry comment and offer you an e-cookie.

  • yeah i get that. an e-mail to tell me some one has replied to me when they blatantly haven't. I accept your e-cookie and offer you half in return as a truce.

  • hahaha

  • this didnt display his clean vocals, thats a smart phrase, but he has really good cleans, and better srceams that what is displayed here

  • Fuck yes his clean stuff on Terria is mindblowing. The record is a masterpiece

  • Definitely agreed, brilliant album.

  • His new stuff off of Ziltoid the Omniscient is even fucking better.

  • You think Terria's good, pick up Ziltoid the Omniscient, Accelerated Evoltion, Infinity or Ocean Machine: Biomech

I garuntee you'll be blown away!

  • Hehe thanks man. Got em all. I find Ziltoid and Infinity a little cheesy at times. Biomech is great but a little dull production wise for my tastes. Ocean Machine is INCREDIBLE a close second to Terria for me. Will check out A.Evolution tho. Never heard it. Cheers

  • Accelerated Evolution wins hands down for me, there isnt a single song on it that doesnt rock in its own unique way.

  • It's so hard to pick a favorite! I hear what you're saying, because Deadhead is an absolute perfect capture of anguish. God, it's amazing! But every single one of his albums is perfect. I'm so happy that he records for his own requisites -- but it's such an EXACT capture of what I need to listen to for my own catharsis. Devin Townsend's drive to create perfect music fulfills all of us. And it just keeps getting better. I can't WAIT for his next album!!!!

  • damn straight bro :)

  • I'm a HUGE Devin Townsend fan. Terria and Ocean Machine especially. I thought that Biomech was the one with the grey and yellow cover. My mistake. Thanks for being so fucking rude about it. You obviously have your head up your own ass. What a cunt you must be.

  • @concantenation

    eat your beets..recycle recycle

    dont eat your beets..recycle recycle

  • ouch

  • I don't know how that doesn't hurt him...

  • fucking cool

  • I wonder why he switched to that shriek-like scream on their self-titled... Probably b/c screaming like he did on the first two cds really takes a lot out of you... but then I'd assume that his clean vocals would sound as good as or better than when he was w/ Steve Vai and on the first two solo albums...

  • Yeah he screams in falsetto now. The way he screamed on city was full body projection and much harder. Your head feels like it's going to explode. I don't think I could tour city for more than two shows haha.

  • It was a whole different style in City & Ocean Machine. lol I think you're right that it would be an impossible tour to use that manner for months and months! But it sure did sound amazing, didn't it! Devin Townsend is metal. In a thousand years when our offspring discover their ancestry and they look into metal, in order for them to discover its true meaning they'll have to listen to Devin Townsend's works... They will undestand the passion of metal as music

  • Haha!! Well said brother. I think tool will feature heavily in my great great great grandchildrens lives also!!!

  • Oh hell yeah! They, too, set their own impossible standard!

  • he is amazing, his voice is truly amazing, even when he speaks, its beautiful

  • Sweeeeet!

  • What song is this of?

  • Strapping young Lad "Devour"

  • Haha, it's great, he has the same first name as me XD spelled the same way too. XDD

  • Nice and raw!

  • That's really cool to see. On record his voice has no equal so it's really interesting to see and hear what it sounds like in studio, in the raw.

  • The purest metal voice. This footage was taken during a SYL recording. I am curious to see that kind of footage for one of his solo "melodic" album; could be hell of hypnotic!
