This was actually a song they made about Keith Moon because someone gave Keith a shirt that was yellow and white, so he walked around pretending to be a wasp for three weeks, then they recorded this song. Crazy motherfuckker. Whenever someone would ask him a question he would just go buzzzzz.
@dylangassmann I thought it was because they were on an airplane and Keith went into the bathroom with one of the stewardesses and then ran out wearing her bra over his eyes yelling, "I'm Waspman!"
@sillyredhead515 John Entwistle actually wrote that (or co-wrote it?), but he let Moonie take all the credit because each band member was supposed to have two songs on that album (although Roger only turned up with one).
I've got it. It's on Atco records, which was never a company affiliated with The Who at all. The lyrics to Substitute on that one also contain the so called "censored" version.
The most I know about this song was that Keith Moon wrote it as a B side to the relay re-release (so many re's). And now I'm really interested. What's the story?
Roger told to Letterman (the vid is on youtube) that once Keith dressed as a wasp on an airplane, and when the airplane started to shake, Keith came out of the bathroom pretending to be a hero... It seems like a jam, for fun, credited to Keith (like with Dogs Part 2)
@ArokenHalo Pete just said that it was Keith's turn to "get the b-side money"...I guess they alternated writing b-sides just like they alternated designing album covers.

The WHO made some great music but never took themselves over seriously and that is the attitude to have when you are in a band..

Interesting song. I have never heard this before. Can't say it's one of my favorites though, lol; but it's okay.

"waltz for a pig" was the B side to the single version of substitute I can't find it anywhere
whofan2753 3 years ago
Wasn't that done by Graham Bond Organization and put on the Who single because of The Who's legal issues with Shel Talmy?

Pete used this riff in "In a Hand or a Face".
JohnFPorcaro 3 years ago 2
Yeah, it sounds like a bunch of Who riffs in different keys and arrangements. Cool song, though, and a funny origin story.
Eirikr430428 2 years ago
that's definitely the in a hand or a face riff in the beginning there
redsoxfan713 2 years ago 10
and quite possibly "North Country Girl" from Pete's "Chinese Eyes" solo album. Hey, why put a great riff to rest if it works, eh?
