Why use CGI when everybody KNOWS its obviously fake. Why not use the REAL thing because there's nothing more real on film than the ACTUAL THING being shot!
A lot of that beautiful stuff Andy did was from quite a long time ago.
Many producers are oblivious to what is possible and just employ CGi for everything whether it is appropriate or not. Saves them having to think so hard on set or take perceived risks
Check out this stuff I did for example over 15 years ago; watch?v=ZNiEnYQIh50
I doubt many producers nowdays would even know what was possible and would just use 3D animation.
CGI is just as much an art, but the materials for it are free and open source. I mean, go look at interviews of CG artists; they're very passionate about their work. The CGI is probably the only creative part of Avatar.

Jesus christ animatronics give me the heebie jeebies. CGI looks better, it's cheaper, and doesn't require people to carry it around. When you have a real actor interacting with a creature, then you should use animatronics with a CG overlay, but other than that, it's a dead art.
I understand how difficult and amazing these pieces were/are to make, but still... That's like saying lead is a better than bubble-wrap because it's more difficult to ship.

i allways loved stuff from jim hensons. i remember tv series "dog city" all to well.that out beat the muppets anytime for hand puppets. i would love to see an updated version of the dog city. especaily since animatronic are alot better since the time of the tv series. the animatroics of today would do more than just flap their mouths open and close.
@CardiohallPictures No doubt the animatronics are far more expensive and demands much more workers during the concept and the making. The CGI is a cheap resource to simulate the "same" effect, but the technology isnt that great even by today, its just aint no better than using those toys. Watching Avatar i feel like playing a fucking Playstation, its awful.
@CardiohallPictures computer graphics imaginary are more time consuming but cheaper, it takes less time to create 3d models but when it comes to rendering even with super fast computers it can take hours to render one frame, the computer has to calculate a lot of things, while with animatronics the rendering is in real time...
@timninerell because the animetronics are goog but for certain parts like for example making a wolf run both animatronics aroe used then the CGI's are used
CGU is not easier! A team of briliant artists works for months on some cg project and you say they gave no love to it? The computer doesnt do it all for them!! Its just becouse you can imagine how they do these animatronics but you dont know how they do cgi.

wow.. just wow... the creature from Brotherhood of the Wolf has always amazed me. I watch that movie several times a year and I could never figure out how it was done.
Even knowing it was an animatronic made it even more awesome! It was such a gorgeous piece!
@RobohX360 I super agree. I was totally nonplussed after watching I Am Legend because it seemed pretty lazy to make CGI zombies after every other zombie movie ever has real people in it. LAMESAUCE.
@RobohX360 Animatronics of this caliber are probably far more expensive than CGI. In high budget Hollywood movies, your argument is, in my opinion, valid, but in the case of lower budget movies, CGI may be the only option.

Movie makes don't do NEARLY enough justice for this dying art.
Everyone relies on CGI because it's easier, faster and easy to manipulate. But hardly any love goes in to it.
These creatures are meticulously brought to life by hand, given beautiful nuances and intricate movements.
