I personally played through the game with the Wiimote + Nunchuk configuration and would recommend it over just the remote. The shaking maneuvers are less awkward and actually seem a little more correct for the ground pound since you get to alternate arms just like DK does on-screen. Plus the D-pad wears on your thumb after a while.
