  • I watched this movie in my History class. They called the confederates the bad guys. lol

  • now how would the world change if Germany had invaded during the civil war

  • @THEARB1TER10 Yes it would have changed back then cause there was no country known as Germany back in the 1860's

  • Robert Shaw was a company captain at Antietam, before he received the offer to head up a "contraband" regiment. This scene has nothing to do with the 54th..

The Civil War was not just another war. it was more dangerous and dirty than any other battle of its type. WWI was a modern war. This was the last of its kind, and some of the bravest people that ever lived fought in it, on both sides.

  • @bookkeeper57 Also more Americans died in the Civil War then all wars the U.S. ever had put together, amazing what you will do to your own people.

  • @candr Something like 620,000; not including those who died of their wounds in military hospitals or in prisoner of war camps, like Andersonville.

  • @bookkeeper57 "like Andersonville".....and Camp Douglas.

  • @bookkeeper57

Yup, but when you say it was the last of his kind, you forgot the french-Prussian war (1870-1871). It was more a curstomp battle, but still,.. : charge of the french cavalry against gatling and modern prussian cannon... battle of Reischoffen... it was not a walk in the park anyway.

  • FAIl at 2:56 :P he goes to stick the spade in the ground and it just falls over XD

  • God Bless the Confederate States of America

  • @liberalsarescum The Confederates helped caused the death of 600,000 Americans and supported human slavery, and you say God Bless them?

  • 4:11 i think he killed somewon... stating that theyr not all has mercifull has the one who woke him up and let him go... but idk maybe he whas just being sure that he doesnt get up and shoot them or something else not sure

  • @umean123 He was shooting a dying horse. You can hear it's moaning and whining, and even see that it's a horse. When he fires, it stops whining.

  • @Manassascreek1861 lol dying horses... wait how the heck did it survive that long if it whas already dying

  • Wow, every Civil War Movie should be as brutal as this on. This war was pretty bad, I was reading on it and I read something about "Facial Wounds"...... (cringes)

  • From the land of the Bluenose.....dumb. Why would any one order a frontal attack like that...no stradegy in that war!

  • @Bluenoser1954

This is the 1860's, and this is how it was done. Throughout the war, our tactics changed from basically Napoleonic to the trench warfare you find in WWII, but simply put, it takes time and experience to figure that out, this battle is part of that experience.

  • @Robertz1986

WWI, not WWII, thats a typo

  • any other guys cry at the end of this film? haha

  • This film truly was amazing you could learn alot from it :)

  • yeah, except it totally misrepresented history.

  • Very true. Glory is entertaining but not historically accurate.

  • 1:33 BOOM!!! HEAD SHOT!!!

  • Great movie

  • i watched this in 8th grade in a CHRISTIAN school!

    it was amazing

  • Me too and i was in the same grade just not in a christian school lol

  • i saw this movie in school twice.

once in 7th and one in 8th.

my 7th grade teacher muted a few curses and fast fowarded some fight scenes.

my 8th grade teacher let us hear it and played the guys head exploding about 25 times :P

  • Comment removed

  • YEAH OMG HUH TOTALLY FUNNY HUH

    moron...

  • WOW yea sure, it`s so funny, hahaha wow, grow up

  • yah me to

  • Bottom line, the civil war was fought over money. The north didn't want to lose profits from the excise taxes placed on cotton. The south funded the north's wealth, and felt slighted. Who do you think sold the south all those slaves???? The majority came from slavetraders in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, both union states. In fact, freed slaves were often not allowed to reside in the north as there were laws to control the "makeup" of the population.

  • Nah the offical reason war was declared was to preserve the union. However, that is likely just a political reason; since most of the north was racist also at the time. Lincoln likely truely wanted to end slavery, as he was firmly against it. Taxes from cotton weren't really a key element in the north economy to matter. Also you forget that many people fought the war for abolishonist reasons, regardless of the 'offical reason'.

  • For everyone here who thinks the war was over slavery, you need a history lesson. The war was fought over states rights. Lincoln's emancipation proclamation was a political move and nothing else. He didn't free any of the slaves in the border states, only those who were fighting for their own independance. Lee released his slaves at the beginning of the war, while Grant owned slaves throughout, and only freed them when slavery was abolished.

  • his emancipation proclomation stated all states rebellling after a certain date their slaves were free, but he couldnt control them since they wernt part of the union so in reality the proclomation did nothing

  • Exactly, Lincoln had no control of the southern states. The proclamation was a move to ensure that England would not "officially" support the South, although they were supplying them with arms through New Orleans. Lincoln himself was rascist. People have to do some self study. Don't always beleive what "government school" has taught you. The victor always writes the history.

  • yea as my teacher said if the south won it would be called the Confederate uprising instead of the civil war lol

  • type "the northern states rights tradition" into google. The northern states wanted to seceede as well in the 1850's. There was no talk of FORCIBLY keeping them in though. Because aat the time EVERYBODY knew it was a voluntary contract-the Constitution. If one party broke the contrct the other party was under no obligation to honor it. Thomas Jeff. even said "let them go in peace". "school" history texts are written for the winning side..truth is unimportant.

  • Whoa! That guy's head blew off like a freakin melon.

  • I was on that film shoot, and a fragment of the fake head was a much coveted souvenir.

  • I was there... as an extra

  • Thats awesome, what side confederate or union, where was it filmed and when was it filmed like 1988 then released in 89?

  • i like glory alot own it for that matter, wicked springs good too,red badge,g and g great but the best civil war film is Gettysburg.

  • This is like that saving ryan part when you think about it.

  • True. Wonder if spielberg got some ideas from this movie, and others like it.

  • hehehe,like a watermelon!

  • at 1:17 that guy flew

  • I remember 9-11, I was in the lower areas and that was the first time the "alarms" went off. Everyone ran like ants to the inside "bunker". When those two 30 ton doors shut, nothing comes in and nothing comes out. I just stood there thinking about my wife and kids, we all thought it was defcon five, a nuclear attack. I believe that was the first time since the early 60's that had happened.

  • that was nasty at 1:32-1:33

  • SCREW THE CONFEDERATES!

  • Screw you!

  • confederate bastard

  • 2nd Massachusetts!! Sidney T. Prouty who fell at Gettysburg, you will never be forgotten.

  • Damn you yankees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Long live the confederacy!

  • Being an officer in those days was piss easy. All you had to do was wave your sword in the air and shout 'stead boys! forward!'. All that and an awesome uniform. The whole dying thing was the only downside lol.

  • I wouldn't call it easy. These officers actually had to fight. You had colonels and generals leading charges. Today's officers, especially field grade officers get a nice cozy office and a generous paycheck. It would be a cold day in hell before you see a colonel taking part in a battle today, let alone leading a damn charge.

  • Whoa now, not all of us field grade officers have a nice cozy office. We too are on the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. As far as "charging" tactics have changed since the Civil War.

  • Didn't mean any offence, and of course not all field grade officers have a nice cozy office, but the vast majority of majors and up sure as hell do.

  • I just made LT.Colonel two months ago and I will be back in Afghanistan in October. I enlisted at 17 as a buck private, I understand what the privates go through, I was one. I generally eat last, make sure they eat first, first one up and last to go to sleep. I work at the Pentagon, and I will take the field any day over having 5-10 idiot generals that could not fight a battle in their back yard more or less in Afghanistan.

  • You're a colonel? sweet! I have a uni degree, and i'd love to be in the army. I just have to go about searching for a way in. Does a uni degree qualify you to enter as an officer? or is it more complicated nowadays?

  • Recently promoted to Lt.Colonel, not a full bird (Colonel). I have two and half years left till I can retire. If the wars continue, I will stay in. If not, I will get out.

  • I see, but still quite an achievement. My old man was in the rank and file for the australian army. Took him 15 years to become a warrant officer one...then he retired.

  • It's all about education. I did 4 years enlisted. Hated it, finished classes and got my degree in mechanical engineering, minor in history. Came back in the army and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, 17 and half years later..

To be honest, I don't know how they do it now with degrees. It should not be any different from nearly 18 years ago. You will go to ROTC and go through a "boot camp". Since I had been enlisted (17-21) I was able to skip that.

  • yeah, except for that officer at 1:32min., his head blew up!

  • You Idiot! you waved your sword around at the front of a group of men getting shot at by over a thousand MUSKETS{GUNS} If you think that's easy you come to my house and I'll show you how it feels to get shot at by a musket.

  • I really like the south but this movie made me break into tears cheering for the Union.

  • im watching this in history too

  • haha i am too and hes right that guy got owned bad

  • OWNED!!! RIGHT IN THE HEAD!

  • we are watching this in History and that one guy totally got pawned in the head.

  • this movie was amazing! but i saw it in school in 8th grade. i was pretty much scarred for life. hahaha

  • this is an awesome start to this movie

  • i'm guessing your from the south?

and may i add that if the south had won. we might still have slaves. or atleast have slaves for many more years than we did.

  • not true , if the civil war was never fought slavery could have continued in the southern and northern states but becasue the civil war caused such a change to the southern economy that it could no longer keep slaves . Had the south won they would of relied instead on a completely free workforce . The only thing that would have lasted , which still lasts to today , is a Agriculture south . Which the south was based on agriculture not slavery .

  • also take note that the Confederacy outlawed the import or export of slaves , whereas the North kept importing threw ought the war . Remember that only 7 % of the south owned slaves so what did the rest of the 93 % fight for ? They fought against the tyrannical North . You can compare the South's revolution to the American Revolution which also had slaves but was not fought for slaves . In fact you can make comparisons on the taxes the british and the north made before these two wars .

  • Can I tell you the south wanted no slaves after the existing ones died ad none more to be imported? And none ever were!

  • "For god sakes come on!"

    -brains-

  • Fuck the Confederates and their primitive ideology which lost them the war.

  • No one really won the war, cause we fought our own people.

  • The war was two conflicting ideologies. One was based on the racist and stubborn to change nature of slavery. The other one was one of a stronger central govt which banned slavery. The second idea won :)

  • fuck the confeds the lose the war go union

  • yah tha dude at 1:32 got pwned...

  • damn the guys head got blown off

  • Uno why so many poor bastards died during the civil war. Because they fought battles like twats. Lets all march slow as fuck in huge masses in bright uniforms and let the enemy shoot us. Fucking stupidity, not glory.

  • the only reason the marched was to show they were humane. They were not trying to be barbaric. I agree with you tho.

  • They were fighting according to Napoleonic tactics. Problem is, new weapons technology had rendered those tactics obsolete. Rifles were much more accurate. Took them awhile to adapt.

  • That's the only way you could fight a war back then. Unfortunately, the technology had surpassed the tactics, but it was one of those moments in the evolution of warfare that couldn't really be avoided. The first WW1 was plagued by the same technological/tactical limbo that resulted in an absolute blood bath. However, the technology had not advanced far enough that the tactics could be changed to fight in a "smarter" way.

  • Yeah it had. Its simple. Instead of marching straight into gun fire, RUN!!!!! FUCKING CHARGE RIGHT UP CLOSE. Theyll fire their first volleys then by the time your right on top of em they havnet reloaded yet. Its just that something like that in those days would have been seen as cowardice and im pretty sure no general would have instigated such tactics for fear of his name being tarnished as an unchivalrious warrior.

  • Than you have a bayonett blood bath that's just as bad as musket volleys. There is no kind of organization when something like that happens. They're not about to go back 2500 years in warfare evolution because the tactics of the day were less than stellar.

  • i still could never figure out what shot him like that, either musket fire, or cannon or something like it could never figure it out.

  • haha. it was awesome when the dudes head blew off. it was so unexpected i think i said "oh Shit" during school. ahaha

  • never mind. I din't get to the part where it said antiem creek

  • Antiem Creek was the bloodiest battle during the Civil War...The Union had lost, but it was a great win for the Confederate.

  • The Confederacy won? In every single history book I've seen or history documentary, it always said the battle was either inconclusive as to the victor or the Union won the battle. The scene we just saw was the Cornfield, one of many locations fought at Antietam Creek where the Confederacy won, but the battle was also being taken place on locations such as the "Sunken Road," "Bloody Lane," etc.

  • isn't this bull run or something?

  • nah antietam

  • we are watching this movie in soc studies right now and we are just getting to the end

  • morgan freeman LIVES!

  • who are those guys in red uniform in the union side?

  • no theyre from the confederates.

  • Probably Zouaves - 11th NY (brooklyn) First Fire Zouaves - Fire as in firemen

  • It is amazing the vast numbers of men who went into battle that way. Pretty old tactics. Kinda like suicide, almost like 1 man made no difference but 20,000 did.

  • pause at exactly 1:00.... and say " dayum..."

  • 1:31 eeeew

  • that was the part that was deleted for the school version of this movie. lol

  • So robert was a Punk ass Pussy the whole time. That's the first time I ever saw the first part.

  • yea he was a captain at the beggining.. was it like his first battle? so yea. u wud be scared as hell wuldnt u? shut up ur the pussy

  • my favorite part of the movie

  • All of your towel head relatives living in Iran, better get out in 2008. Iran is already starting to mess with the American Navy. If women and children are killed, that's on your president's shoulders. You start shit, America will end it.

  • Damn you are a stupid fucktard.

  • why?

  • thanx for helpin me wit my report

  • This is such a good movie! I watched it in my history calss becasue we are learnign about Robert Sahw, we werent allowed to watch the beginning scence though

  • WAR is for idiots and dummys - 9/11 was an inside job - 3,945 dead U.S. soldier in Iraq, and for what? Ask their mothers if the want them back - if their casue was as fabricated as this 'civil war' faught above. Those who fight wars are uninteligencia.

  • Those who start wars are the ones you should be ranting about. The people who fight wars for America which stands for peace and freedom are to be thanked. The Civil War was fought to keep this nation together. If we didn't fight that war we would have been a totally different nation today. I don't think that there was a way for the Civil War to be avoided forever.

  • america stands for freedom and peace? tell that to the dead civilians (women and children) that america kills over there each day... sure is peaceful killing women and kids. And freedom? What freedom do you think you have? seriously, id love to hear that.

  • We are killing women and children?! Who told you this? We are certainly not. We wouldn't even be over in Iraq if is wasn't for those terrorists threatening the world with weapons of mass destruction. What freedom do I have? That answer to that my friend is the Constitution. You should take a look at it some time.

  • you are lost - take a look at the stats regurading the number of civilians US soldiers kill in Iraq - better yet ask a soldier who has been there! as far as 'terroists' and 'WMDs' LOL! 9/11 was an inside job and there are no WMDs and still no bin laden, and oh yeah bin laden is in afganistan not iraq! and if youve read the patriot act you would realized that that nullified the constitution! WAKE UP!

  • Nullified the constitution? What are we following today? We are in war and certain precautions must be taken. This patriot act doesn't really pertain to anyone unless your a terrorist. Well I'm not a promoter of that war, if they wanted freedom and peace then we wouldn't have to be over there. The US soldiers do not kill citizens unless they are threating other people. Sucide bombings by their own people kill civillians more than US soldiers.

  • look, lets just leave this kid alone, its oobvious he doesnt even know what hes talking about.....or hes just a hippie

  • go join the army. please go die in Iraq. PLEASE

  • lsiten: when YOU get your READ ID, and your RFID chipped passport, and YOUR LIFE is restricted - then how is it affecting terrorists? its affecting YOU and you only! but you cant even see that you are living in nazi germany, your rights are dissapearing- in the name of preventing 'terrorism' and everyone knows 9/11 was an inside job.

  • I am afraid, although I don't like it, DJHIVES is speaking the trueth. We knew 9/11 was going to happen and let it so we could "Liberate" Iraq. they didn't ask to be Liberated. We needed an excuse for war, plain and simple. It was created by the U.S. Government as 9/11.

  • Damn Skippy! 9/11 was an inside job - and Iraq was invaded. thousands of beautiful Iraqi women and children killed....

  • also, you need to talk to ANYONE who has been to Iraq - ask them how many innocent people they murder. go on ask them.

  • Theres always going to be war, no matter what. If there was a draft you would probably flee to Cananda. So get out of this country Hippie, because your afriad of going to war yourself.

  • ragglefraggle your right. I'm done with arguing. djhives I hope that someday we will all live in a world where peace is a common thing among everbody and war will be a thing of the past. For now we will just have to wait how this war in Iraq affects everybody.

  • war does one thing - kill people - i hope for your sake anoher nation does not to 'liberate' the U.S. and decides to invade where you live and kill everyone you know - thats whats happening in Iraq - and thats why the world hates the USA. The US kills civilians, just look at nagasaki and hiroshima.... imagine if that was you and your family.

  • djhives, stfu, goodbye

  • the truth hurts i know...

  • The Japs attacked us first. If the American soldiers had invaded Japan the casualties would have been way up there. So to save American lives Einstein created a bomb so big that the Japs would have to surrender.

  • 'to save lives we killed thousands of woman and children' great - sicne the US invaded Iraq - how ywould you like if they nuked the US since the US attacked Iraq first.

  • America is too strong to be nuked, we are the world's police force. When some dinky country makes nukes and says they will wipe Israel off the map, people take that serious. This year, Iran will be destroyed. Quote me on that, I promise you it will happen.

  • it wuz fun chattign with u guys, bye

  • Yeah, I guess it was. See ya ragglefraggle.

  • Dang,

I'm pretty sure that having your head blown up hurts like nothin else.

  • I'm sure you would only feel it for a spilt second. O_O

  • hahah we are watching this in my AP class right now. Just watched this today actually. That guys head blowing up is like the best part.

  • I also watched this in my AP History class. It was a good movie.

  • WHOA!!!!HOLY SH*T!!!!!THAT GUY'S HEAD FREAKIN BLEW UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!dam, the civil was wuz brutal :(

  • This was a great movie, It had one of the best musical scores I have ever seen in a film

  • I agree.

  • Nice videos, great fighting, too bad lots of death, wish we will never forget these mens who died in battle. Thanks for posting it.

  • when will you idoiots learn: war is a quick way to the grave! you go die , ill stay here. and yes ill still be free!

  • Sure we could sit back while peole like you will do nothing to keep freedom. Maybe you ought to do nothing while you are being invaded because you don't beleive in a war for peace. Lets see if youre still free then. Remember to have peace their has to be some kind of war.

  • wrong! idot war is for dieing YOU go march off to war - why dont you sign up for the army! whats wrong afraid to die for NOTHING! Ill go be a coward here and stay alive you go be brave and die, im sure someone will care...

  • Well, if I am fighting for freedom and peace then at least I died for something.

  • no you just DIED! do you think the U.S. soldiers who died in Iraq are thinking about freedom now, or do you think they wish they were ALIVE right now handing out Christmas presents???

  • lol, thats true, but only in wars like the iraq war, but back the soldiers actually fought for something, like in the revolution, if nobody fought or joined the army for our independence and freedom from the brits, then wat? we wouldnt have america, itll just be some giant piece of land ruled by teh brits. But really pay respect to those soldiers that died trying to make this country, not dieing for no point. I think ur 2 much influenced by bush's pointless war

  • i have NO RESPECT FOR ANY WAR --- it is pointless, you idiots do the same thing generatinon after genertaton... DIE! wake up! so what if the british won.. the 'Americans' were nothing more than British rebels! thats why we still speak their language... ENGLISH!

  • Do you want us to just sit back and be invaded?? What the hell would we do that for?! We have to stand for what we believe in, to fight for what we believe in!!!

  • you have the wrong idea about war: take a look at history, if you fight you DIE - do you want to die? you go stand for what we 'beleive in' in IRAQ - and see what happens to you! if you wish for death then war and fighting is for you.... THINK!

  • Would you rather die trying to protect yourself?!? Or would you like to be exterminated like vermin?!?!?!?

  • protected from what??? some 'bogggie-man' some politician says is after me???

  • I wasn't just speaking about the war in Iraq. If there is a war going on, then there is a threat that we will be invaded. Do you want to defend yourself, freedom, peace, and your family? Or would you rather just give all of that up?

  • The EXCUSE for war is always the same - no matter what war: 'your freedom is at stake' they dropt teh F word and you IDIOTS go marching off to die. Watch 'lifekill' on youtube, to see the true purpose of war

  • sigh, i dont think theres any sense talking to this guy....apparantly he values his own life more than anything else in existence

  • If it comes here I would fight to hell and back. but, and I don't even like LIFE that great, But I would not go take other human Lives on a Political whim. A Lie. We aren't fighting for Freedom. This war is a disguise

to take more freedoms from us.

  • All they have to do is scream Freedom or For the sake of our Children and this whole country (at least the legals that are left)

will line up ready to fight. They create "enemies" to go to war all the time taking citizen rights. Homeland security=Homeland Sodomy. Get real peopl, I used to say I was a Proud American. I hope someday, after the revolution, people will be able to say that in all honesty.

  • nooooooooooo wat about the terrorists??? if you had a chance to fight thsoe terrorists on 9/11, i bet u woudlnt do it because ur life will be at stake

  • 9/11 was an inside job! there are no terrorists except the US government. so forget about the "terrorist" argument...

  • sigh, im just saying, wat if, wat if u had a chance to prevent 9/11 and the holocaust, but ur life would be at stake, would u do it>?

  • that sound honorable, but here is no honor in suicide. but ya you mean like sticking your head out to tell the truh and risk your life...thats not too wise - the rebellion must be silent, and the revolution will not be telivised

  • i thought u just said that was for any war, in fact, if we do keep arguing, persuade me how the revolution was pointless and how noone believed in anything there.

  • Right because these extremist will stop at nothing to see all Americans dead.

  • Finally someone is speaking some sense.

  • lol, 3 pple against 1 tart whos never seen a textbook before

  • yeah! preach it!!!!!!!

  • .....if thats what you think, then get the f*** out of this country

  • who said im in 'this' country!?? dont let your eyes fool your brain!

  • alright, then where are you?? it sure sounds like ur from thsi country too

  • ragglefraggle09 knows what he is talking about. If you don't like standing up for freedom and peace then why are you here?

  • i love stasnding up for freedom and peace - but can you see that fighting and killing is the opposite of peace-- you know what forget it, i dont care, join the army, go to iraq and see what happens to your black ass...

  • I'm white. O_O

  • whats the difference.

  • There is certainly a difference for you if you judge me black right away. Why did you do this???

  • are you a Jew?
