  • I'm reading Surviving James Dean right now.. A candid book about Mr. Bast's experiences with the most definitely bi-curious Jimmy. I recommend it!

  • His first book in the 50's and his James Dean movie (1975) both contradict his latest biography. Who knows? He may be telling the truth. Or he might be milking this thing for more money.

  • i know because he told me.

  • did james dean have feelings for bill bast? i'm sure he did. i also think bast reads too much into their relationship. jimmy was a lone wolf - he craved attention, by whatever means; he was secretive; driven. he took sex whenever or whoever was around at the time. would never have got where he got, if he hadn't, so quickly. his inner ambition meant he used people, maybe not intentionally all the time, but he did. who cares anyway. "what price gold?"

  • @budbrando - how on earth do you know any of what you wrote?

  • I'm reading it now and I don't know how trustworthy this guy is.

  • I think hes very trustworthy, he spent more time with jimmy then anyone eles in his life.

  • yes he lived with jimmy but did anyone really know him? also, if he was his true friend why would he take every opportunity he can get to cash in on Jimmy's misfortune? He could be telling the truth but there's no way of knowing.

  • Well, everyone has the right to their own opinion. However I believe almost all of the book because the way its been written its pretty clear that Jimmy meant alot to William, and he wanted to record the truth the Jimmy HE knew, maybe it was only one side of Jimmy....it doesnt matter. William spend 5 years living very closely with James Dean, that makes him more credible than any other source....his book is as close as anyone can ever get in truly understanding James Dean.

  • Every fan of James Dean should read Bill Basts' book, "Surviving James Dean". Very interesting and fun to read but heartbreaking. Very memorable.
