  • shitty enough camera and camera lag wtf is this sht 1 fram a second?

  • "oh nooo! A metal drummer that can groove, all my arguments are now invalid and i have to admit that he's actually an insanely talented individual" Thats what all the metal haters are thinking right now. So fuck you metal haters.

  • You Know what I would love. We all know Roddy can play fusion and groove like hell but everyone thinks all he can do is blast. I say he needs to be Portnoy's temporary replacement in Dream Theater (I am holding out hope for MP's return). Then there would be no doubt about his Poly rythms not to mention the dimension his speed would bring to them behind the Shredding of Petrucci and Rudess. Just My Opinion.

  • greatest metal drummer of our generation

  • hes bass drum sounds so good

any tips on how to get it to sound like that?????

    lol

  • vi varios solos de roddy.. y esta vez me voló la peluca

  • this is exactly why i love joey jordison. derek roddy is a heavy metal drummer who has technical and groove skills. just like joey and people are always like. OHH hes a fuckin little gorilla all he can do is slam the drums... GO FUCK YOURSELF

  • IM SEEING DEREK RODDY NEXT W/E !!

  • Comment removed

  • i saw this guy and got an autograph. hes aaesome

  • 3:29 is good... want that

    !!

  • Great. It's not a trick, it's a Sonor. :-)

  • Derek is the MAN!

  • maybe you should try out some weed for the creativity and coffee for the speed

  • hahahah ive actually done that

  • thats the spirit^^

  • @CellEquinox auf jedn. :D

  • Right on \m/

  • What drugs do you recommend that will get me to playing this good and this fast?

  • Very tasty and groovin

  • Are you Married????

  • The sound of his kit fits this type of playing more than blastbeats and stuff. Great!

  • wtf is with the shitty camera ffs???

  • Derek I will buy u a good camera if u play me a blast beet before i go to sleep .

  • wow. a metal/hardcore drummer finally displaying technical skills instead of just playing 1000bpm. good post here. there is far more to being a good drummer then playing fast. this guy is good

  • Seriously man, Check out all of Dereks work. His grooves are tasty and well placed in everything he does. When he kicks it up a notch and does do blast beat work and fast double kick patterns, he is almost flawless. Derek is not a drummer, hes a musician and a fkn brilliant one.

  • i know people like this kinda drumming more but frankly i like the sounds of 113871349794739 bpm this is really good just not my style your the type of idiot who limits what he likes or can do by classical theory noone cares about technical skills if it sounds good it it sounds good theres just a really washy sound without the triggers

  • how do you know what type of idiot i am? maybe i am just a normal idiot, instead of a classical theory idiot....seems like you may be the idiot!

  • why dont you just shut the fuck

  • @blugrastooth

    Derek Roddy, a 'metalhardcore' drummer?....

  • Who else thinks that Derek and George Kollias should do a drum clinic together? I would pay like $100 for a ticket.

  • They have such a similar arsenal of drumming styles, it would truly be amazing!

  • If they did decide to pair up and do a clinic, they would probably have the largest crowd any clinic has ever seen. You would be a fool to miss something like that..even if you didnt like metal.

  • @BurningAlienSyndrome It will never happen because george will be too jealous of derek to drum with him :)

  • @Drumsauce136

    George and Derek are friends.

Also George would have no problem holding his own with Derek

    Tim

  • @TimWaterson Thats pretty cool, I didn't know that. Well I guess drummers that are that good are where they're at cause they're open minded and don't get super competitive around other drummers.... I was just joking around with that comment I posted man haha. Sorry.

    -wilfredo

  • @BurningAlienSyndrome Add Inferno/Tomas Haake to that & i'll give away a months salary for that ticket.

  • One of my new favorite drummers!

  • Is this thee Derek Roddy's own channel on youtube or someone who's dedicated it to him?

  • I believe its his!

  • I love this. sometimes metal drummers need to get away from the constant blast beats and fast double bass and practice more intricate beats. dont get me wrong. i love blast beats and double bass they're to die for but going fast doesnt make a drummer neccesarily rly good. anyway Derek Roddy your a beast!

  • Can't buy a faster camera? u.u

  • cooollll

  • Really? How could you ever consider yourself a true musician if you don't know how to respect all the different music styles and genres? For being nearly 60 years old, you sound like a ignorant teenager.

  • who the fuck still listens to the radio nowadays anyway. for a 50 year old man you have the maturity of a 5 year old baby.

  • Who cares if the majors don't want to sign heavier stuff ? there are enough tools out the for everyone to do it themselves these days. You are wrong about ticket sales tho mate, and your assumptions of who attends these gigs, (i am none of the above) and it's not just about making money, just let it go man.

  • What do you mean "dumbass metal"

He played in Nile and Hate Eternal asshole.

  • Haha you're still trolling Derek Roddy? When will you realize that nobody cares what you think...?

Seriously... this guys has posted like 8-10 comments on no less than 6 or 7 Derek Roddy videos. It's like he has a personal goal of bringing Roddy down or something.

It's honestly sorta sad, that this guy dedicates so much time bringing someone down just because he doesn't like their musical style.

  • cool that he's open minded..but the best that he could possibly do is joining hate eternal again cause that's his type of thing what he does best..

cause if you ask me..this fusion stuff what he does here..he's only trying man, he's only trying.

  • cant blame the guy for finding new interests :) i know what it's like to get stuck in a metal thing and want OUTTT :(

  • really? im pretty sure he could keep a beat, there is a reason this is called a solo

  • Sweet double bass =]

  • damn

  • do you have any endorsements? can play the drums as well as derek roddy?

  • so jealous , keep crying on roddy s posts fan

  • you need to check yourself, before you wreck yourself

  • hahahaha rrdrums...dude when ohh when are you gonna post a vid of your mindblowing drum skills....comon gramps....it was put up or shut up time 2 months ago...now you just look silly

  • what kind of snare is that?

  • I believe it's Bronze Sonor Artist 14x6

  • well it sounds shit

  • For me, it sounds perfect ;). It's just the cam.

  • it does sound good, but he is using mics. the sound isnt the camera sound.

  • After reading through some of the comments on here I've gotta say, it's NOT a competition. Who cares if one drummer is better than another. They're doing what they love.

With that said...Roddy is wayyyyy better than Joey lol. It may not be a competition but there is no way in hell Jordison can keep up with Roddy. Derek is SO much more versatile. He walks all over Joey when it comes to metal or any other genre. (not that joey can play anything else)

  • wow way to totally make a hipocrit of yourself saying it's not a competition but then going to basically making one saying that he's better.

  • Ha the last part was mostly a joke. Though I meant it. I was just saying it doesn't matter who's better and who's not. But roddy is better. Thats all. That's not being a hipocrit.

  • Tomas Haake is better than both of them. Thats all. . .

  • fuck haake,

easily the most overrated drummer in existence

  • rofl no, i hope you are joking

  • I hope you are joking as well right?

  • 2:43 he's like "wtf are you looking at?" XD

  • JOEY AND RODDY ARE TWO DIFFERENT STYLES! come on now folks

    btw check out george kollias

  • Joey and Roddy are not two different styles of drumming. It's the same but Joey can't hang with people who have talent. Shut the fuck up.

  • ok fag

  • No joey just has Average skills

  • dude your cool as hell, ive had some of your vids saved on my pc for years. i play too, please check it out

  • that was metal and groovy as hell and it gets 4.5 stars JESUS PEOPLE

  • that is the best drum sound ever

  • 4.5 stars? fuck gaytube.

  • wat kind of heads does he use

  • Remo Ambassadors

  • Alot of metal drummers (roddy, jordison, portnoy) started out playing funk/latin/jazz. Roddy is very skilled in many fields! Double bass flams get really boring, you need to throw down something tasty once in a while.

  • boy is it nice to hear a death metal drummer like him playing some tasty grooves and NOT just laying on the bass the whole time.

  • well theres plenty of drummers that are in death metal bands that can do ther stuff

  • 0:19 following beat <3

  • loving the ribbon crasher

  • whats that annoying ass claning/ tambourine sounding shit

  • Sounds really Mike Portnoy ish

    haha

    Dereks amazing tho inspirational drummer

  • hells better than joy...hahaha....sorry slipknot....ur shits weak

  • u cant compare joey to derek.....totally different, but u r right derek is better then joey. but joey has still got major skills

  • lol joey has average skills compared to derek:P

  • lawl u said joy true what u said though but thatwould be in general not in genre terms cause derek plays difrent genre of music oppose to joey in heavy metal or (nu metal)

  • delites are delightful

  • def. a different style then what everyone is used to. more laid back just shows he's all round not just straight death metal. some drummers i know that do hardcore metal rock couldn't lay down a funk beat u know.

  • Best way to check his skill is watching videos called Derek Roddy Clinic Day X :)

  • this is one of the best videos of him that ive seen

all the others are a million blast beats

    and some rolls

  • i know, i was amazed he could go that slow.

  • and how flexible he is. hes not only a great metal drummer but he can paly swing, jazz, funk and pop and millions of other styles. great drummer

  • his polyrhythms are out of control

  • There are alot of drummers who are teachers, students, ect who read and write music who drum as a career choice. Those people usually are self dignified with sticks up their asses. They talk down to self taught drummers because they think they know it all. I know some really good drummers who won't even look past their little plane of existence because they "don't like heavy music"... its like being a cranky old man. have fun being a teacher the rest of ur life. Lol.

  • Some of the best musicians in the world are self-taught. Educated musicians tend to get too caught up on the technical side of things, and they have a hard time with their creative side, so it ends up sounding robotic. It's harder for guitarists to achieve it, obviously, but drummers who are self-taught can really branch out to where they want to go, with no other influences except their own. I'm self-taught for 10 years now, and I've loved every minute of it.

  • i no how you feel. i learn from playing around with random beats i make up plus making up beats from other people and changing them around. if you try to learn too much, you end up just playing mostly rudiments and beats. there's no creativity to it. the best way actually (i would say) is growing up in a drumming community. grow up in a drumming family, grow up having all the drumming tools u want right there for you.

  • he nos hows you feel. LOLLLLLLLLL

  • Lmao@this guy lol

  • fuckin crazy that he's self taught

  • i dont like the way he plays it makes me nervous is that bad???i meanlike hes gooddd bu agggg...idk

  • those triplet runs that he does at like 8 seconds are so sick.

  • He the man can play something besides blast beats..

  • I know it's not edited, but from about 0:34 to 0:38 looks like it's sped up, it's so flawless and fast. Insane!

  • Is this the same kit he records all his Serpent Rise videos on?

  • Yeah, looks like it.

  • i like the tuning of his toms, i wish my toms could be like that

  • Not tricky, per say, but it's a pain in the arse, especially when you're gigging. I used to play with two kick drums at concerts, but I ditched one and bought a double-pedal. Unless you have a roadie who is a glutton for punishment, it's not worth it. The mainmost problem besides carrying them, is tuning them. It's harder to get two bass drums into tune than you'd think. Nothing is worse than hacking away at one kick drum, while hearing that the other is a pitch higher. Irritating!

  • i've gone to the modern drummer festival since 1994. grow up with that every year and you make up and learn so many great beats.

  • I would have to disagree. This has a great feel.

  • This guy really knows how to GROOVE. Love his hihat work in the beginning, and his drums have great tone. Not neccesarily what I use on my kit, but great tone nonetheless.

  • drum masta

  • most ignorant comment ever. your dumb

  • wait, that was serious?

  • ignorant? because he likes it heavy? whats wrong with that? pssss

  • I wouldn't of said it was an ignorant comment if he didn't say Roddy can do better. He can love it being heavy all he wants but If he is disappointed with the quality of playing because it isn't heavy well then that is very ignorant.

  • Monster player. Thanks for posting.

  • this guy is amazing, its nice to see him play some thing with groove rather then that double kick nonsense

  • People on YouTube seem to get reeeeeally confused about what triggers actually do. They don't make you faster!! They simply alter the sound so each strike is as even as the last - abit like when you turn the touch sensitivity off on a keyboard. Anyway, Derek is trying to stop use them - he mentions it in an interview I have of him.

  • If you look up the term "fuckin' BEAST!" in the dictionary, you will see this guy's picture...

  • Nice work Dezza! Coldplay IS shit! Keep up the fine work.

  • Derek you're an amazing drummer dude. I hope I have the pleasure of bumping into you one day and shaking your hand. If that were to happen dream come true man honest.

  • why the fuck is everyone thumbs downing (aha) everyone?

fuck sakes grow up people. if u dont know wot triggers are look them up, he is not using them in this video u can tell by the sound, and if u were a sound engineer, which i am, u could tell. i guess ill be getting the thumbs down now ahaha

  • i give you thumbs up for trying to turn things positive.

  • thanks man aha

  • I love how his drums sound like!

    great drummer!

  • repara no contra tempo com a mão direita!!!

  • some of the most interesting drumming ive ever seen

  • Still one of my favourite clips of you Derek, awesome, awesome stuff! I hope I can catch one of your clinics sometime or better yet, make my way down there for some jamming!

  • damn, check out those bitch tits!

  • what??

  • bitch tits! he's got a serious set of bitch tits!

  • this guy is such an inspiration to people of all levels. he's fast, he has good technique, his playing has texture, and overall he's so fucking humble about it all. damn.

  • amazing

that is how a drumkit is meant to sound

  • I gotta say, when you have your Sabian's on your kit, it sounds the best..

  • i love how i've found a drummer that is heaps awesome to me, and not everyone (or anyone) is dissing him! =]] Roddy owns man

  • Look up Danny Carey, the drummer from Tool, he's very good as well, also he uses Sonor just like Derek does, Sonor are amazing drum sets. Both Derek and Danny (mainly Danny but Derek seems really impressive as well) are brilliant inspirations for drummers, as well is Neil Peart and Mr Portnoy

  • more and more i see dereks videos i want to play like him :)

  • D-Rod is great!!!! Love the groove 1 min in-

  • people try and say how good someone is over another and argue that point because they know they cant do it so they are trying to show that they know alot about it,.. some one who actually does know alot,.. will just admire it for what it is,.. and comment on the actual video,.. not sit there and pick (or try and pick) it to bits say who else can do it better

  • a gd solo with great technique

  • I like the foot tom or w/e that is at 3:30ish

  • Amazing how many youtube posters totally jerk themselves off when seeing some sloppy uninspired fast out of sync bomb/hyperblast wannabe deathmetal drumming and when it comes to real musicianship like on these video's, they don't come further than a useless discussion about triggers

Those who I'm aiming at, learn to relative.

  • sound is amazing ..... as the performance

  • Those kicks sound beautiful.

  • Why do people argue so much about music stuff. It's really sad. MY PEDALS WILL KICK YOUR PEDALS ASS...or my favorite drummer/band..whatever. How lame. This guy fucking shreds. True phenomonon.

  • love teh fill at :34 :D i wanna learn to do that

  • people are such gimps when it comes to understanding triggers, the word actually annoys me now. No, nothing is triggered here... so pipe down and just enjoy an amazing drummer

  • love the Masters kit :P

  • Derek is powerful and one of the nastiest drummers im glad to see him do this solo w/o a lot of blasts. i love them but. seeing him go beyond is awesome

  • both his legs and pedals are powerful you worthless piece of shits!

  • what are triggers?

  • sensors like shit that picks up sound by vibration on the drum. so tapping it would sound the same as banging on it. also can change the sound of the drum.

  • they are not shit, they dont cheat or anything like that,

  • watch my video to explain wot they are dude

  • the only thing triggered are his bass drums....

  • it must be the quality of the recording in that case

  • no there not, i can tell by the sound its not, u can hear accents for one

  • triggers are dynamics-sensitive.

therefore you can play accents or ghost notes with them, all with ridiculous definition and tone control.

  • yeah, what alot of people don't know is that you can get dynamic triggers, if you have a good module to put them though then you can do nearly anything you want, it all comes down to what settings you use, but accents ghost beats and all those can be acheived with the right triggers and modual, not to mention they make it harder to accomplish

  • I highly beg to differ, i own a pair and they are very powerful. Much more powerfull than the trick pro-v pedals.

  • axis's are powerful u dont know wot ur talking about

  • uhh axis is the weakest pedal I've ever played. You have to bring the beaters really far back and use wooden beaters for power.

  • lets just say if you are playing the beaters close then you have no power or endurance to begin with.

  • oh really, and youve played them i presume?

i own a set and they are just as powerful as any.

you use triggers to get better definition of the notes when playing fast.

they also pick up dynamics so if you play sofy, you get a soft sound.

they do not make you 'cheat' or anything else.

they just make the sound better and crisper.

and i know cause i have them.

  • he is playing without them now

  • hmmm.

    are you blind?

the only thing he ever triggers is his bass drums. the part of your kit you need to with the music he plays, cause usually a bass drum wont project unless you eq the fuck out of it.

as you can clearly see in this whole video, his toms are miked.
