This was the only bad race that Galileo ever ran in his career. After coming so close to winning the Classic the year prior with Giant's Causeway, you can understand Aidan O'Brien taking a shot with this horse. He had won 6 of 7 starts in Europe. Including the Epsom and Irish Derbies. Plus the King George. His only loss had been by a head to Fantastic Light in the Irish Champion Stakes. But Galileo's pedigree was all turf and no dirt. Think this horse could've easily won the BC Turf in 2001.
@bnegs521, The BC Classic has actually been run for 27 years, coming up on it's 28th, and Tiznow is indeed the only horse that's still ever won the Classic in back to back years. The only horse who's really been close besides Tiznow is Zenyatta.
Thanks to all true Race Horse fans. When word was out that some people said they would harass the Arab horse owners, the real racing fans said they'd throw them out of Belmont park!!!
Without a doubt, Sakhee ran one of the most brilliant races on conventional dirt that I've ever seen a European turf horse run in this race. Giant's Causeway had also really pushed Tiznow to his best at Churchill Downs the year prior. But Sakhee, IMO, really made Tiznow dig down and pull out everything that he had inside of him to win the Classic. JMO.
An incredible race....I had backed Galilleo, the English Derby winner in this race but he just didnt take to the sand at all....Would have been interesting to see Galilleo, Sakhee and Tiznow get it on on the turf
Until the Zenyatta era, this might have been the best race I had ever seen. I was a huge fan of Tiznow, having been introduced to him when he beat the classy Dixie Union a head in the 2000 Affirmed Stakes. I was at Churchill for the 00' Classic and at Belmont for this. In winning back-to-back Classics Tiznow not only beat Giant's Causeway and Sakhee, he beat the 2 most powerful stables in the world, Coolmore and Godolphin. Tiznow was some kind of horse, winning races across the US.
Tiznow was a total beast over conventional dirt. America's best. American HOY in 2000. But both Giant's Causeway in 2000, and Sakhee in 2001. In both's only career starts on conventional dirt. Took Tiznow absolutely to the wall. Tiznow had to summon everything he had to beat them both. That speaks to the greatness of the European turf champions, IMO. I'm not sure Tiznow could've went to Europe. Made 1 career start on turf against either. And ran them as closely on turf as they did him on dirt.
@GBeret83 Tiznow would destroy on the European turf as well, because after all, a great horse is a great horse and America breeds the best. Tiznow was big and strong and could power through any surface. Take Secretariat, for instance. He raced mainly on dirt, but in his last race on grass in Canada he crushed a strong field by nine lengths in frigid weather, with his jockey shutting him down before the finish. American muscle! How about Big Brown - tell me that beast couldn't kill in Europe.
@Arazi124 Yes, well done!! BB was pumped full of drugs on a daily basis and turned into a monstrous amalgamation of Secretariat, Spectacular Bid and Dr. Fager! That, and that alone, is the reason he would "kill" in Europe!!
That was a beautiful race. We were at the eighth pole and when they came by I turned to my dad and said, "Watch this. Tiznow is gonna get him." And sure enough, he did. That was nice when they used to contest this race on the dirt instead of the stupid plastic pro ride.
therefore, when a european horse, who's used to the sequence of getting whipped with the left hand and moving towards the right rail towards the end of a race, is naturally going to do that when being whipped on his left side. it was a COSTLY mistake on dettori's part, and cost them the race. there's no doubt Swain WOULD have won. and lets not forget the fact that silver charm followed swain to the right and opened up the hole for Awesome Again. '98 classic was definitely something else
@regginald81 What did you want Durkin to say? "Wow, awesome that an American horse just beat an Arab-owned horse two months after 9/11"? His immediate reaction (under the circumstances) to the great US horse Tiznow's gutsy win, making him the first and only two-time BCC champ, is about right, wouldn't you say?
betting on tiznow in this race...watching him fall and behind i started screaming at my tv in anger...then when he came back...screaming at the top of my lungs...amazing feeling
This great horse won the Classic two years in a row, each by a nose. Tiznow demonstrated the monstrous heart and ability he has. Chris MCcarron refused to go to the winners circle for ten minutes, parading Tiznow up and down the grandstand so the crowd could get a glimpse of this truly great horse.
Frankie Dettori on second place finisher Sakhee tries to explain to trainer Saeed bin Suroor why he couldn't win. Dettori said: "I felt I went by him. But he knuckled down and fought me back. I felt once I couldn't shake him off, already my petrol gauge was going into empty. I knew I was there to be shot at. Tiznow's got a great reputation and a head like a dinosaur. I knew I had to get by by half a length to beat him sure."
I agree Dettori was classy there, but he wasn't so classy the year he took Swain into the 19 path and blew the '97 Classic. Then he wasn't so classy the following year in the '98 Turf when he brought home Daylami by 4 lengths and said "What about Swain?" Yes, Frankie what about Swain? You cost me mad ducats in the classic and you were gloating for taking Daylami home when the worst jockey on the planet could have guided that beast to a win in the classic.
it was the '98 Classic, but close enough. '97 classic was Skip Away's masterful performance. but yea, its easy to get them confused. same generation of horses. Swain-gate is still discussed 'til this day and appears to be one of the most controversial topics in breeder's cup history. plain and simple, swain was used to racing in europe, and frankie is used to riding in europe where there are right-hand turns...so swain thought the rail was to the right, and frankie used the left hand whip.
WILLYPIGEON didn't your mom every tell you not to believe everything that you read?? I am both a thoroughbred owner and an exersize physiologist. The edge that this gives me as an owner, is that I record and analyse each and ever workout and race of my horses, often spotting physical ailments before they become obvious. Sakhee's stride and mannerisms did not change during the stretch run as should have been the case if Frankie was right. Tiznow increased his stride by 4 inches and won the race
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
if you read Frankie Dettori's autobiography, when Sakhee lead Tiznow, he injured his leg, therefore allowing Tiznow to fight back, otherwise there is no way Tiznow could of beaten a horse like Sakhee, giving him a length lead.
@willypigeon Are you a dummy not to realize that Dettori was making excuses in his autobiography?! Of course an American TB is going to beat some raghead-bred horse. The US produces the best, and always will. Did you notice the size difference between Tiznow and Sakhee. Tiznow was taking one mighty stride for every two by Sakhee. American muscle! Go back to the UK and your mediocrity.
