I love Cyndi and her music ... and fucking despise VEVO ... I'm tired of seeing VEVO and the stupid motherfucking commercials before all my favorite videos ... fucking assholes ... fuck a VEVO
@YFLOInternational i don't mind the commercials. After all, why would I expect not to pay for the videos? It's a small price indeed to enjoy the wonderful videos I love. And I believe Cyndi Lauper would also receive some small royalty from VEVO, for the ad revenue. I am happy to contribute in my small tiny way to the artists that I admire and whose work I enjoy.
Cyndi, I first discovered your music in 1983. You came into my life with realism and a passion unbridled. I have enjoyed your sincerity and depth of talent, along with that comedic value you see in life. Keep writing girl, you will never be too old to wow them all.
Great song. Great vocals. No matter what song she does you can tell she puts her heart and soul into it. I heard her say in an interview not too long ago that she likes to do songs that have a story. I wrote a song that has a story and think fits her style.
I've been trying to contact her but have not succeeded. You can see the song on You Tube. It's titled Harpo - US if you have any suggestions of how I could get this to her I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
All these people bitching about this cover vs. the original need to really stuff it. She paid tribute to fantastic song, presumably because she was a fan of it. The original was not removed from the face of the earth, it will always be there for you to enjoy. Just keep it movin' if you're not feeling this version...
@D3ADKENNEDY, I think it's more of she does not have the chops to cover a beautiful composed and sang so beautifully by Marvin Gaye.
If a person does not have the ability to improve on a song then they should leave it alone like Billy Idol trying to do the Doors L.A. Woman. They just lack the dept.
I like Cyndi as a person but don't care much for Pop anything.
No one is complaining about Girls just want to have fun and Time after Time.
I hope she does not try singing any Joni Mitchell songs.
@MrsFelton27, understand and expected that from big Cyndi Lauper fans.
But this song has meaning and is representative of the turmoil of the 60s/70s and is not a Pop Standard. I am not knocking Lauper as a performer. Just that this is one of the greatest music as art ever written. Please watch Marvin the original composer, writer of the lyrics and singer.
/watch?v=Y9KC7uhMY9s
/watch?v=fETIjVvv1Ds
I in no way mean to denigrate Cyndi. This is just a special magical song.
Lauper picked the wrong song as she lacks the depth for this anthem on the turmoil of the 60s & 70s. This was a protest song about the Vietnam War, the environment and strife happening especially in the black communities.
In 1969 or 1970, I began to re-evaluate my whole concept of what I wanted my music to say... I was very much affected by letters my brother was sending me from Vietnam, as well as the social situation here at home. I realized that I had to put my own fantasies behind me if I wanted to write songs that would reach the souls of people. I wanted them to take a look at what was happening in the world.
This "Pop" version is a compete destruction of the original by Marvin Gaye.
Before any of you flip out, please just listen to the original by Marvin Gaye on Youtube.
"What's Going On" far too political to be promoted on radio and too unusual compared with the popular music sound of that time to be commercially successful Gaye, however, stood his ground and continued to lobby his case to label executives and to Gordy, as he did not want to be bound by Gordy's or Motown's version of music.

@daniyellowjello That goers without saying. The original will always be the best version but there were a lot of people who remade songs that were just as good as the original and this was good cause Cyndi always sang with emotion and all of her soul. A truly great artist from the 80s.

@Kaciily LOL...just remember that we didn't have the internet in the 80's; some of us actually relied on artists like this for us to not feel so alienated. True Colors was a breakthrough that way...
