This is a misrepresentation. The Latvian Waffen SS should be considered as a seperate entity from the Waffen SS as it did not take part in the holocaust. It mainly fought the Soviet Union's forces who had at the time occupied Latvia. In addition, most members weren't voluntary and were in fact drafted into the army agains't their will... Somebody wants this to look like a support of the Nazi ideology and what-not, when in fact it has nothing to do with it.
The US Displaced Persons Commission in September 1950 declared that:
"The Baltic Waffen SS Units (Baltic Legions) are to be considered as separate and distinct in purpose, ideology, activities, and qualifications for membership from the German SS, and therefore the Commission holds them not to be a movement hostile to the Government of the United States."

This is not a day of shame. This is a day to remember those who took up the fight against the Russians who occupied the homeland. Occupied by a secret deal with England. Communist Russians under Stalin took up ethnic cleansing against Latvians. This was a violation of human rights. It was necessary for Latvians to join Germany, eventhough they (Germany) were not liked, to get the Russians out of the homeland. Just like November 11 is to the western world, March 16 is important to Latvians.
Those people were there to pay respect to the men and women who died serving germany... But yet all those anti facist people tried to ruin the memorial... I didnt see anyone waving around nazi flags or anything like that... They may have done bad things but they should still be remembered...

However, I would turn around and say that some of those men were there to remember friends, much in the same way as we remember ours come Nov.11th. Yes, the defacing of the wreathe was horrific, but why shouldn't soldiers come to pay thier respects to thier friends who lost thier lives, same as anyone else?

I don't know what kind of honoring it was. But the men that were killed were still someones family members. I don't see why they shouldn't show some kind of attention to them. We are for peace, love and the Waffen SS. We honor all heroes of the SS and Wehrmacht who fought and fell during their struggle to keep the Baltic countries free from oppression. This is what I don't get. The Nazis were as pro white as you could get. I do not see why they would have attacked anyone that was white/nonjew. The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was made between Germany and the USSR. It divided Eastern Europe. The USSR invaded Baltic states and Finland in 1940. The year of terror. Deportations and mass executions done by the USSR. In 1941, Germany betrayed the USSR, and invaded. On arrival they were seen as liberators. Many Latvians took up arms in the SS because of a vendetta against the USSR. They fought for their people and should have just as much right to be honored, like Russia honors Soviet soldiers.

It was a tribute to all the fallen sons of Latvia, whichever side they fought on. The monument was built during 1935-1938 for the WW1 veterans and Latvia's independence. It is now a remembrance for WW11 veterans as well.

This is a misrepresentation. The Latvian Waffen SS should be considered as a seperate entity from the Waffen SS as it did not take part in the holocaust. It mainly fought the Soviet Union's forces who had at the time occupied Latvia. In addition, most members weren't voluntary and were in fact drafted into the army agains't their will... Somebody wants this to look like a support of the Nazi ideology and what-not, when in fact it has nothing to do with it.

The US Displaced Persons Commission in September 1950 declared that:
"The Baltic Waffen SS Units (Baltic Legions) are to be considered as separate and distinct in purpose, ideology, activities, and qualifications for membership from the German SS, and therefore the Commission holds them not to be a movement hostile to the Government of the United States."

This is not a day of shame. This is a day to remember those who took up the fight against the Russians who occupied the homeland. Occupied by a secret deal with England. Communist Russians under Stalin took up ethnic cleansing against Latvians. This was a violation of human rights. It was necessary for Latvians to join Germany, eventhough they (Germany) were not liked, to get the Russians out of the homeland. Just like November 11 is to the western world, March 16 is important to Latvians.

However, I would turn around and say that some of those men were there to remember friends, much in the same way as we remember ours come Nov.11th. I don't know what kind of honoring it was. But the men that were killed were still someones family members. I don't see why they shouldn't show some kind of attention to them. It is just the way it is and it can't be changed. I guess it would be the same as honoring the confederate soldiers who died in the civil war in the US.

This is what I don't get. The Nazis were as pro white as you could get. I do not see why they would have attacked anyone that was white/nonjew. As long as you did not try and fight against them you would have been ok. I don't see why a bunch of pro white people would kill of fellow whites unless they were communists, jews, communist jews and agitators, or some other kind of trash. It makes no sense at all and I refuse to buy the lies. Something was going on there.

The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was made between Germany and the USSR. It divided Eastern Europe. The USSR invaded Baltic states and Finland in 1940. The year of terror. Deportations and mass executions done by the USSR. In 1941, Germany betrayed the USSR, and invaded. On arrival they were seen as liberators. Many Latvians took up arms in the SS because of a vendetta against the USSR. They fought for their people and should have just as much right to be honored, like Russia honors Soviet soldiers.

Boring video. So, people are protesting against the memory of the National Socialist movement in Latvia while ignoring the fantastic history of the Soviet Union? Give me a break. If I had a choice between the Wehrmacht or the Red Army during WWII, I would have chosen the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS in a second. Neither the Allies nor the Axis powers are free of war crimes from the war, and to protest something as trivial as this memorial service is pathetic. Did you enjoy the Soviet Occupation?

@rtgoodson " National Socialist movement in Latvia " .. sorry mr rtgoodson, it was not a celebration of anything, let alone a national socialist movement or the waffen. It was a tribute to all the fallen sons of Latvia, whichever side they fought on. The monument was built during 1935-1938 for the WW1 veterans and Latvia's independence. It is now a remembrance for WW11 veterans as well.
