There is too much rich people power-so we can't have a flat income tax b/c it won't work. We need to close all tax loop holes. We need this progressive income tax. How can you claim to love America if you can't bring yourself to love Americans? Yes, people need that money. A handout is okay ever so now and then but not to live off of. So, close a lot of the Hand out opportunities-enforce illegal immigration- and the economy would be fine. Or do like ron paul, no income tax, but raise sales tax
I don't agree with the concept of taxing anyone on their labor, so I disagree with income tax, and I definitely disagree with increasing the cost of goods and services (which are already taxed numerous times within the process of a single transaction) just to make up for its loss. *Especially* when government use of our tax money is wasteful and fraudulent (I saw it with my own eyes when I was in the Navy).
The simple answer is to STOP SPENDING SO DAMN MUCH MONEY. People do this all the time.
787: Well, I'm in complete agreement on this one. It's common sense that when you tax something you get less of it; it's a penalty that incentivizes people to do less. So, eliminating a tax on production (income tax) makes a lot of sense. Replacing it with a tax on spending/consumption would incentivize saving and disincentivize spending on the credit card. It's too hard to do though; too much risk for the pols.
And there's plenty of govt spending we could cut; not from the Obama crew though.
""OBAMA HAS WONNNN!!!!!!!! guys both nytimes site and msnbc reported earlier given the unprecedented amount of early votes that the count has ALREADY exceeded the amount of votes to clinch the amount of electorates needed to win the white house!!! he already has a given 281 electorates!!spread the good news people!!!
I wunder how many people will fall to their knees and join us when tuesday knight our LORD and SAVOIR supernaturaly inter's the voteing box and people vote MCcain the next president. THANK YOU JESUS!!
I am an independant with a track record of voting mostly democrat. An independant friend of mine with a track record of voting mostly republican and I both agree that a flat tax would be the most fair way pay our taxes. However, when we talk about this, we always seem (right or wrong) to discuss a 5-10% tax rate. I'm unsure if that's enough or way too much, but I would be willing to pay much, much more if we could vote on the ways our taxes were spent.
Since when is it fair that a retiree is allowed to get a pension of several thousand dollars a month, is allowed to draw money off the $500,000 he has in his 401k, or IRA. Then, on top of that, gets Social Security when he becomes 62 years of age? A person with that kind of money should not be allowed to get Social Security too. The surplus should be given to a person who has made mimimun wage all his life so he can retire and live well too!!
groundhog2008, you earn social security. It's taken out of our pay checks. As far as I understand it, this is YOUR money. Unless you're suggesting that he or she should give his or her soc. sec. away to those less fortunate...? 401K is also earned, and IRAs are financed with one's own money (if it's done legally) as well.
faithing: Why should one person be allowed to keep all of that money upon retirement? He does not need a big pension, $500,000 in savings, and also get social security. His having this much money, the government should levy a large fee on what he uses in order to help the poor. That would be the fair and balanced thing to do. Goverment should raise up the economic level of the poor.
groundhog2008, exactly how much are you willing to give up? I mean if this was your $500,000 in savings and your pension, how much should the government take?
faething: You've asked the key question. Once Leftists agree that it's acceptable to tax some people at a higher rate, the next question is how much it's "fair" to take. Dems can never answer that question because there will always be another spate of "great" govt programs that justify just one more tax increase on the wealthy.
And to hold the moral high ground, the Left must demonize the wealthy. Thus all the talk about "greed" and "social justice". It's just another grab for the gelt.
I am for progressive taxation because I have been poor. I have had to live on 20,000 dollars. I was terrified getting sick and I worried about getting to work because my car wasn't reliable.
Now I make more money. I am about as happy at 200,000 as I was at 100,000, I had all my needs met at both. But moving from 20,000 to 30,000 was huge, life was so much better if I got a cut and didn't need to close it with superglue and get a scar. I am glad to help the poor because I know what it is like.
michael: Progressive tax rates are here to stay; the difficulty is determining where to draw the line.
IMO, Dems can't stop ratcheting the level up, because it's how they get elected. Vote for me and I'll "give" you more "stuff". At some point, taxes rise high enough to impact GDP growth, and this means higher unemployment/inflation. GDP is absolutely critical, and I prefer lower taxes overall.
But, if you're making $200K/yr you're putting your money where your mouth is. Unlike most Dems.
ground: You're talking about Means Testing for social security. Social security payments only to the poor.
The reason means testing is wrong is because social security is a govt run retirement savings program. The govt collects 7.6% of your earnings, holds it for you, and then distributes it to you once you retire. It's safe and guaranteed.
Means testing would turn social security from a savings program into just another tax. Everyone should get to keep it because it's THEIR money.
"The govt collects 7.6% of your earnings, holds it for you, and then distributes it to you once you retire. It's safe and guaranteed."
I was with you until the end there. Now that Social Security numbers have become a tracking system, your money now gets funneled into keeping the operation running and providing a service for the businesses requesting it. That's why SS is running out. The money is wasted on things it was never allocated for.
787: Well, I'll agree SS is a ponzi scheme. If they were honest, the govt would have kept all SS payments in a fund collecting interest; if they had, we would have SS suprluses out the butt and would have easily been able to reduce the tax from 7.6% to something much lower.
But, govt's motto is "have a dollar spend a dollar", so SS collections were used to fund all manner of social programs. The money is gone and the system is bankrupt. So, stand by for tax hikes.
"SS collections were used to fund all manner of social programs."
The money that is supposed to go to SS isn't SS money itself, but budget for the SS program. But the actual money that you pay into SS IS being spent. By law, they are not allowed to spend it on anything but payouts, but instead, they get around that by "charging" for their services. Like all government entities, they can't keep track and end up undercharging.
You can't get a loan or do very much at all without a SSN, and every time a company has to verify your number, they use SSA. SSA is constantly inundated with requests to verify SSNs, that costs a lot of money. When the government doesn't keep adequate track of how much all this costs, our SS funds continually deplete.
All of this SS mess is due to the fact that SS has been abused, turned into something that it was never designed to be: a tracking system. Same thing will happen with Real ID.
Theres a malignant tumor still growing on the body of America. It is called the Religious Right. Ironically, McCain, warned of this tumor in 2000, but now embraces it as an American value, thats part of the body of America.
Sarah Palin (of the Religious Right) is as irrelevant to the movement for women's equality as what Clarence Thomas is to civil rights, and as inappropriate to advancement of science and global rational as GWBush. Shes Bush with lipstick who promotes staying stupid.
"if the rich paid the same Social Security tax—not more, like Obamas proposing, the rich are going to have to pay a little more on their income tax—just pay the same that everybody else is paying, those of you who make over $102,000 a year, tomorrow thered be enough money in Social Security until something like 2075. Almost to the next century, wed have enough money in Social Security. Thered be no Social Security solvency problem."
I wonder if you think all the troops go to hell.. you say no matter who does it so by your logic they do. that i think is the biggest modern hypocrisy of Christian the Christian value system.
Obama is for pro-choice a womans right to kill her own child! this is worst than what the Natzi's did...millions of children in America are murdered every year,,and this person thinks its just!
I'm glad you mentioned it: "the loopholes for the rich". IMHO we should consider the flat tax only after we closed all those loopholes. The problem is, that it will only happen after we've got real democracy.
The reason that we have a graduated tax now is to help the lower income people. A flat tax would hurt those with low income and make them pay more. With the exception of a tweak here and there, that the current tax system is very fair as it is.
If the government needs money for healthcare and education, raise everyone's damn taxes and lets all contribute to a better America! It should not be the burden of only the wealthy as it is not their fault that healthcare and education cost soo much.
Children were of the highest regard and therefore women's work was the most respected. In this culture every time the RICH make an increase more women and children become homeless. Mothers work is the only unpaid and unrecognized work force in this country! But we are at the end of an age and it always gets corrupt then. This culture is definitely an object lesson on what NOT to do and WHY.
Harikus is RIGHT ON, Its still the slave / castle system. From a Native North American Indian perspective....to take more than you need to live is akin to robbing from the mouths of the future generations. Therefore it is a crime and such a person should be shunned or even banished. But what does the artificially transplanted aliens do? They admire greed! Taxes? You people came here and robbed us so YOU could be free of taxes but you never really understood how to be responsible or Free.
openair - closed mind. Calling people wicked and condemning everyone to hell is a very small-minded and ignorant position for a human being to take. Those convictions come from believing in an invisible fascist dictator in the sky. I don't think you realize how hateful you actually are. Do think condemning a raped woman to raise her attacker's child is a good thing? You are seriously retarded. Ask the human race for forgiveness you closed-minded sheep.
A flat tax across the board would actually be around 20%. Less than most people pay now! This could work for a while, but those Congressmen we have are greedy and would definitely try to raise it after the first couple of years.
As far as Obama winning. I don't think so. Enough voters are realizing that with the bailouts we just paid for, there will be no money for any of Obama's plans. (McCains either) And with our economy there will be no tax cuts, or even new taxes.
The rich kids get it from their parents, and they will never know how much harder the...well the working class actually works than the wealthy elites. The "lazy" people are the ones producing the goods and services that these fat cats profit from. If you really think about it, society hasn't progressed much from the old feudal system of Europe. The arbitrary owner of land, ideas, or brands reaps the majority of the rewards while the "lazy" peasants are responsible for the actual production.:p
I say 25 percent SALES TAX across the board. (Mike Gravel proposed this)
Drop this income tax bullshit with its loopholes and just tax all goods and services at 25 percent (with the exception of food products like bread, milk, eggs, etc.)
The rich spend more so they will contribute more in tax.
Much like France though 25% is too much. The French feel it's fair...thinking of moving...will see shortly here. Davis, please respond how audition went for you! Just a nay or yeah would work. Yours, e
mmm... the government steals so much money, how much can you give to it reasonably? I have heard such expressions as "Godfather of the Democratic party," I've seen the windows of buildings in Manhatten filled with brightly colored paste-up paper curtains, we support mercenary military forces which has been an understood stinker of a policy since Machiavelli, how can one happily give to this kind of a government- "First responders-" are these waiting for something TO SAY, or something else?
the thing you have to think about is the fact that some people get stuck in poverty and low income. a flat tax WOULD make the rich richer and the poor poorer. also, the richer people can afford a higher tax. 30% of a low earner's income means SO much more to them than 30% of a high earner's income. for those people who come from money to money and put their wealth down to "hard" work and want a flat tax... i would say try holding down multiple jobs with kids judt so they can eat.
Get pregnant. Go through nine months of being pregnant. Give birth. Spend 18 years raising a child on minimum wage with no welfare or health care. Then tell us all your opinions on abortion. You are a man, this decision is not for you. Roe V. Wade happened decades ago. The decision was made, end of story. A candidates beliefs on abortion are of no consequence, as they will not affect the next four years in office. It's simply something to differentiate the two for the masses.
1. determine the minimum cost of living (food clothing shelter etc.)
2. raise the tax-free threshold to this amount (why should someone pay tax in society if they cant even afford their basic human rights?)
3. THEN figure out your income tax scheme & consumption (sales) tax on top of that.
oh, & if i was running a school that spends that much money on kids just to turn them into stupid elitist little shits, i would probably be too embarrassed to admit it. is that really the best they can do?
I am not rich, but I pay high taxes. Biden said over $150,000 how long before it includes me? I cant pay more in taxes as the cost of living is so high where I live. I will not vote for Obama because he has always voted in favor of higher taxes and that isn't what this country needs in an economic downturn, don't believe me, look at Hoover, my 401k is shrinking and w/Obama I would have to pay tax on contributions knowing I'll already be taxed when I retire...is that what we want?
Socialism, redistrubution of wealth is not healthy for capitalism, the bailout is disgusting and shouldn't have happened the way it did. The wealthy already pay 70% of the nations taxes, how much more do they need pay? We need the wealthy to have money to hire the rest of us, punishing them only leads to more unemployement. I grew up in a bluecollar fam, paid for my college and combined we make over $100,000 a/yr working bluecollar work.
I love this video. I took a job that pays me and my coworkers less than we are worth so that I could do something that I love. I was working to put myself through school but had to stop that for the time being as money is VERY tight these days. I am not ashamed to say that I work as a community organizer and with other like-minded people at a non profit. But I am sad to say that in spite of doing what I love I will probably never retire as without a way to save I wont be abel to do so.
Better than a "flat tax" would be a national sales tax - abolishing the income tax code. the sales tax would be around 25%, but would only apply to new goods (not a used car or home), but not food and some other essential items. This would still cause the wealthy to pay more than the poor, and would be considered "fair" by most people.
I thought you knew what you were talking about Fleetwood. Flat tax?! Seriously? How much money does one man need? After you have a home, a nice car, a maid, childcare, a lawn guy, cash for vacations, etc... what else do you need? Why can't everybody live with some degree of comfort, no matter what their education or where they come from and what they do? Why shouldn't everyone have healthcare, and enough food to eat? Instead you'd rather your elite friends eat caviar.
Yeah these rich 16 year old douchebags must think just about everyone in the military are "lazy" since even a 4 star general doesn't make a wholelot of money. The Flat tax at 30% might work.. but most flat tax advocates call for 15%-18% and that just won't work for what we need to run all the fuctions of goverment.
Joe the plumber will have a record out by december hopefully this former huckabee supporter will have his own business with help from exxonmobil and blackwater, seeing him in mccain rallies finally mccain has agreed to pay taxes joe owes ohio, they can also arrange a trip for him to israel as he will be serving as secretary of state for john mccain.
Why don't you do some research instead of trying to reinvent a system, that had already been implanted all around the world. Look at the social wellfare states in northern Europe for instance. They have ridiculously high taxes, but also have the highest education, the highest quality of live, are highest ranked on the global peace index, environmental index, etc.
And they are the only ones not crushed by the financial crisis. So, now tell me exactly, what is so wrong about taxes and socialism?
If we are willing to pretend that there are still elections in this fascist state, which is quite a stretch at this point, (bordering on the ridiculous), it seems that the installation of BO is designed to guarantee race riots which will help defuse the rising tide of civil war. After all, with the constitution no longer in force, the union is dissolved. Civil war is inevitable. The economic "crisis" is just the first step to weaken the opposition. And you thought you were awake...lol
the economy could PLUMMET if there was a FLAT TAX. think about it when it comes to financing a home, No tax incentives and paying interest. On 6.875% you get about 50 bucks a month in principal. As opposed to renting? I would have saved up to put money down as I am sure others will
The theme of this video is the redistribution of wealth through a progressive tax plan or a flat rate tax plan. The basic assumption here, is that people who have to work for a living are overall going to have to pay the most - be it, collectively or individually - that, simply isn't right. The wall street bailout will cost a family of 4 about $10,000. The average American is already $9,000 in debt -just put it on my tab. Minimum wage isn't a living wage. Why does speculation pay more than work?
You want to take someone that is just as honest and hardworking as your lawyer friend, but works at a fast-food joint, who can't afford a house, educational experiences for their kids, or even enough food for the family sometimes, and you want to give them a *massive* tax increase- measured in either dollars or percentage. You're very smart, so I don't think that you've thought this through. You're denying the paycheck-to-paycheck reality of so many Americans.
Not a fan of the flat tax, and given the latest 2.1 trillion bailout of the investor class, a war for oil, and a growth policy based on the upper classs needs: I dont see any reason to change. Capitalism without regulation and redistribution really does end up like a game of Monopoly. Economics, whatever the system, is a human creation and not some natural law of the universe. Good luck on the results of your audition.
I like the flat tax on earned income. However, unless the real estate loopholes about depreciation are patched there will be little flatness or fairness since wealthy people own most of the real estate. Also, I hope you landed the gig.
NOOOO! John McCain CANNOT win!! Come on America do the right thing!
That was a good video. It was easier to catch what you were saying =P. Yeah, if taxes had a flat rate say... 15%, that would probably be better. But then again in a tiered system it means that everyone has a more similar amount of money... maybe it should be a combination? And now for bad examples...
eg. 12%=$15000-$29999 per year 18%=$30000-$74999 per year 25%=+$75000
Don't worry about not having a script today this was a great video where you came on screen and very clearly stated what your feelings were and talked about yourself and people you knew. It reminds me of your first video, "Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran", which I still think is one of your better ones.
I'm sorry that I haven't been able to donate to you. I'd love to but I'm broke as a choke and can't afford to. Heck there are other people I wish I could donate to as well but it's the same story.
I hope you just brought up the fair tax to provoke discussion. Consider that the 400 wealthiest in the US have as much money as the bottom 150,000,000, fucking 18th century French aristocracy huge. A flat tax would benefit the rich and hurt the poor who have little or no disposable income besides the cost of putting food on their plate and a roof over their head. Of course, flat tax advocates like the Neo-Con National Review don't give a flying fuck about the poor.
kevmo99:"the 400 wealthiest in the US have as much money as the bottom 150,000,000...18th century...aristocracy.A flat tax would benefit the rich...hurt the poor who have little or no disposable income besides the cost of putting food on their plate...a roof over their head."Some companies R incorp. in other countries & have their bonuses sent 2places like the caymans tax-free.The rich don't pay their share b/c of 2 many write off options.they hire lawyers 2 tell them how 2 spend 2 write off.
When Obama or McCain begin to talk about SCRAPPING the current income tax code COMPLETELY and starting over, I'll begin to take them seriously. Everyone (Democrat, Republican, independent) knows that it is utter nonsense and tied to literally EVERYTHING!
EVERYTHING!
This would be the fastest way to fixing this country because it addresses everything.
The fairtax (or Ron Paul's plan) is better than "flat tax".
A flat tax sounds great. The problem is the amount of taxes not being paid by the wealthy would have to be picked up by the middle and lower class. A flat tax, at this point, is just giving money to wealthy people and taking money away from poorer people.
Flat tax sounds fair, but it would crush a lot of people and make it even harder to break into those higher tax brackets.
I'll be honest, I really liked this video more than your most recent ones. Maybe the lack of cuts and a script let more of your own personality come across. I definitely prefer this conversational style of video meant to provoke discussion more than your usual scripted presentation.
I just sent you $20. How much is a pack of depends these days?
I really wish you would have continued to raise concerns about the illegal occupation of Iraq or other things along these lines..You almost sound patronizing...How about..STOP THE WAR!! STOP CORPORATE CORRUPTION!! Get a life!!!
Very genuine vid Davis. There are different proposals for flat taxes. Most of them are in the 17~20% range. There is also the 'Fair tax' national sales tax levied on all purchases. That is 23% or 31% depending on who's spinning it. I haven't heard any of the Dems propose a flat tax as they consider it to be regressive and unfair to the lower income levels.
I used to support the idea of a flat tax because logically it makes sense...
UNTIL...
You look at the details and realize that this would simply end up as a MONSTROUS tax cut for the wealthy and would crush small business. The worst part would be that if you made it flat to what the poor pay now, the government would collapse. If you made it higher than that, then you will triple or quadruple the number in poverty.
I like this video, Davis--very candid. Anyway, I like the concept of a flat tax because it seems fair that everyone should pay the same percentage of their income, but there should continue to be a limit where anyone making less than a certain amount pays no taxes at all because they simply can't afford it and still live. Good food for thought.
I've had my ballot for over a week now (the whole state votes absentee), but I don't know what to do... still undecided, you could say!
well in Canada, the land of the overtaxed and overworked we pay approximately 40% of our wages but if you need an operation it is paid for unlike USA where you have to remortgage your house to get a finger sewed back on. A flat tax should be 25% to 30% across the board.
And finally big corporation needs another 4 years of Bush style tactics and the vote will be rigged for the win by McCain.
First, Good Luck with the audition, I hope the character is down your ally. Second, society should not pay taxes unless the Government gives a return on their money, such as complete health care and education. If that type of pay back becomes a reality, then the income tax rate should be 25% across the board. Thirdboth candidates are spoiling for a continued war, albeit in different countriesto me the election was fixed long agoObama or McCainWhat change? Come back to Earththe storys over.
Woah Fleetwood, you must have lost your mind. Flat tax? That sounds like something a Ron Paul supporter would say. A flat tax is regressive. A poor person doesn't have 30% of their income to spare, and a rich person has 99% of their income to spare. That's why rich people should be taxed to hell, because otherwise they invest it in a death-for-profit mutual fund, as opposed to the good uses it COULD go to were we to have a decent government that didn't blow it killing muslims.
I really like the point you made at 4:40. it's precisely the same reason why we see so many black people fitting the 'stereotype'. it's a chain reaction of the socialization they get and in turn deal to others since they were brought over here and made slaves. I also know I'm a decently intelligent individual, but somehow have the lack of faculties and discipline to really succeed so far and I really think it has to do with my chance of birth. Everybody is at the make or break of their birth.
The reason that there is no flat tax is because the rich have ability to cheat on their taxes. They send money to off shore bank accounts and claim deductions that they are not privy to receive. How many poor people do that? I couldn't even THINK of a deduction that I could take that I am not privy to receive. I saw this report on Yahoo news the other day, it was in Forbes magazine. I am still amazed.
i know that once im out of uni i will in the either of the top two tax brackets and that a flat tax that you talk about would benefit me.
however i support our tax system because rich people can afford to give more than poor people to make sure that everyone has the chance to BE rich if they work
The only way the Republicans can win, is if they cheat. It's been that way forever because even 50 years ago the republicans represented the rich, just like today.
a complete overhaul would have to be enacted , and i'm all for it , but the individual states would oppose it . i genuinely feel that this system could work , we must first deal with all these pockets of taxation districts . What about the school tax , the property tax , the individual town tax , these are all questions that must be answered before a flat tax is implemented .
i say , let the voter's decide with a referendum , not just a pres election
i'm a piss poor video maker , i should get some tax credits to upgrade my equipment .
seriously though , i'm all in favor of a flat tax , but it's complicated because of the individual tax rate imposed by states . say we pay 28 percent for federal taxes , some people would pay more or less depending on what state they live in .
in order to implement this system , the tax system of each state would have to be federalized , thereby dissolving local and state taxing authorities ....
I'm not voting the twins but will be laughing if/when you trek across the brooklyn bridge.
Flat tax...my thoughts are that before a flat/fair? tax could be implemented all loopholes must be closed, right now I live in a state that borders Canada, I think we can bring $800 in goods from Canada to US-duty free-this loophole would give border state citizens an unfair advantage over central states. Also wealthier people should have to declare all items when entering the US to close that loophole?
Whatchyatalkin'bout Davis? There is NO law that says you must PAY taxes at all. The IRS is an illegal organization only functioning under the protective blanket of fear. Show me a law that says you must pay taxes.
You need to check out a website called anti-irs (DOT) com.
No, dude. The congress passed a costitutional ammendment.
This is it:
Amendment 16 - Status of Income Tax Clarified. Ratified 2/3/1913. Note History
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.
Is that exactly how it is written? I have heard and read from countless unrelated sources that that amendment is specific to income which does not include that which is generated from what is determined as labor. Income derived from labor is not taxable.
If that is the case then Rodney, they sure as hell owe US a lot of back taxes and the RICH who ain't doing a damn thing need to be taxed like crazy. Sitting on your ass holding a dog is NOT work. No matter how messed up Paris Hilton's make-up gets.
The provisions of the Sixteenth Amendment conferred no new power of taxation . . . — United States Supreme Court, Stanton v. Baltic Mining Co., 240 U.S. 103 (1916)
The Sixteenth Amendment, although referred to in argument, has no real bearing and may be put out of view. As pointed out in recent decisions, it does not extend the taxing power to new or excepted subjects... — United States Supreme Court, Peck v. Lowe, 247 U.S. 165 (1918)
Thus, if the amendment didn't give any NEW power to Congress, then Congress doesn't have the ability to tax anything or anyone now that it didn't before the 16th amendment.
And then the Supreme Court ruled that it DIDN'T. Supreme Court has final say on how a law is to be interpreted. A supreme Court ruling over rides it...it's part of that whole Checks and Balances thing you may have heard of that once kept our presidents from acting like Dictators and a rouge Congress from passing BS into laws.
The Supreme Court, in a decision written by Chief Justice White, first noted that the Sixteenth Amendment did not authorize any new type of tax, nor did it repeal or revoke the tax clauses of Article I of the Constitution, quoted above. Direct taxes were, notwithstanding the advent of the Sixteenth Amendment, still subject to the rule of apportionment and indirect taxes were still subject to the rule of uniformity. — Howard M. Zaritsky, Legislative Attorney (1979)
Also, I think the Joe the Plumber adds and the pejorative tone taken by the rebulicans in regards to Obama's tax plan probably will resonate with some of the on the fence types, but not to the point of causing a loss for Obama.
You caught me, I'm poor, but I'm a student, if I wasn't poor it would be weird. I don't like the idea that the rich, because they are paying more in taxes, get more of a say when it comes to using those taxes. A flat rate would increase equality and although it may be a bit inconvenient it works out better in the long run, but I'm Canadian and therefor socialist! lol.
There is no flat tax rate that would be "fair." Even if it's something like 15%, which might be easy for everyone to deal with, it's easier for some than for others.
Now, I do and don't understand that. Paying an equal ratio to your income seems ok to me. Hypothetically, I understand that the person making 1000$ a month would be paying 150$ which carries more weight on their income, but to have that money replaced by an equal say on what the government does with that money can not be labeled by a price. I dunno, double edged sword?
Best video yet! Save the bells and whistles for television. Income Tax, according to many internet sources, just pays interest on the national debt. The government could grow a set of nuts and use the income money to establish their own interest free stimulus loans to businesses but then we would have to end the federal reserve. Instead the high end coterie of crooks that cover each others asses remain in jobs of influence fucking over even those with educations that seek upward mobility...
What school is this because I go to a South Eastern Connecticut school that plays a lot of school like yours. I'm thinking you are either Exeter or Kent? If you can get back to me.
And yeah we do talk about politics all the time. We actually had a mock election for our whole high school and the results will be revealed tuesday. It should be indicative of the real election considering you have many young republican boys (republican fathers) and the new generation of change. Good video on the spot
One great benefit of a flat tax (or national sales tax) is that it prevents a large amount of class warfare in politics. It'd be much harder to increase spending when the effect is felt by everyone, not just the richest.
I live in Australia where sort of a whealthy family and we have progressive tax in Australia. My family pays a 50% income tax. my familiy is fine with it. The whealthyier portions of society should pay a higher tax rate, even with the higher tax rate they can still make a higher standerd of living. It dousnt hurt us to much and some one has to help the rest of soceity . I like living in a country where even the poorest can get healthcare schooling ect. Some things are just worth more then money.
it looks like all that money going towards education has really paid off. I mean that sarcastically....unless you really are in your fourth year of school, in which case, I suppose your mastery of the English Language is about up to par. You may be fine with a Socialist Government, most of use here in the US however would rather go back to our Constitutional Republic and continue being sovereign citizens. GO BACK TO SCHOOL and stop smoking pot so often.
a flat take is the wrong way of thinking but a consumption tax will hit the less than legal workers and people that work for cash under the table. Those people would not pay a Flat tax but they do purchase goods and services. 1-2% would be all needed if we could bring down spending.
The problem with everyone, no matter their income bracket, being taxed at the same percentage rate is that the necessities of life are not factored into the equation. I don't think people should be taxed to live. Once you reach a certain bracket, money is no longer a necessity but a luxury, deserved or not. Personally, I'm in complete agreement with Nader on this. We should tax what we like the least and dislike the most. People don't need to gamble, smoke, drink, or invest to live.
Any random tax percentage rate on a working-class family could force them to have to choose between necessities of life while that same rate on a far higher income would only potentially result in the cutting or limiting of certain luxuries, if that.
Taxes and the social programs they can support lead to the betterment of society, a condition from which everyone benefits.
Really good vid. i enjoy the normal ones, but this one really helped to even it all out, chill things a little bit. you should do one of these to like every 5 of the others
We've under valued the labor of those who do the dirty jobs that folks like D's lawyer and accountant friends would never consent to do; and we've over valued the "labor" of those who've recently caused the crash of our economy.
How do we know people aren't paid what their labor is truly worth? Corporate & business profit margins are a huge clue.
If people were paid what their labor was truly worth, and loop holes were removed from the tax code, we could all afford to pay the flat tax.
A flat tax, as everyone has already said, would fairly well either break the bank for the low income peoples or lessen the load on wealthy so that the government would be broke. The absolute inverse of this would be to tax the wealthy so severely and the poor so lightly, that they both make equal amounts. The trick is to find the balance where the taxes don't increase so much for the rich as to keep people from working but high enough so that armies of peasants aren't raiding houses of the rich.
a newscaster was on the Regis and Kellys how and he slipped up while talking about Obama's economic plan, instead of saying if , he said "when he becmomes president" kinda makes your think its alll planned eh?
I think we should not pay taxes period it is unconstitutional and made law in 1913 illegally. The Federal Reserve is privately owned and the taxes that we pay goes to these criminals. Most people do not know this and think it is patriotic to pay taxes from our hard earned work. Well it's not, so we should stop paying taxes period, get rid off this corrupted governmental system all together. Good luck on you interview.
markangeloc: taxes contribute to such things as the maintenance of public buildings & roads; the provision of public services; & the wages of public servants like firemen, cops, mail carriers & *cough* our representatives in government.
Your argument about the FED is valid, though. A private, for-profit banking institution should never have been allowed to manage our public funds. There is also a convincing argument that income tax is unconstitutional.
HalcyonRain321: fifty percent.. FIFTY PERCENT goes to the fed as interest for printing our money. We already tax goods and services which brings in quite a bit of money. Thank you for bringing up the constitutionality of the fed. Another reason "we the people" should protest.
11/22/08 == End the Fed rallies across America. Go protest!
EmelinaChaCha: I know! It's one of they biggest money making scams ever conceived of; and to make matters worse our representatives (*cough*) in government are in collusion with the perpetrators. Bush & Co. will ride out of office & into the sunset wearing one of the very golden parachutes- paid for by you and me- handed out to the criminals on Wall St. & in the investment firms & banks which have destroyed our economy in the name of corruption & greed.
A flat income tax rate across the board would be out of the question. I'm a mathematician but the argument is trivial. PROOF: Currently those making under $30k(~32% of the population)pay ~15%. Suppose we extended that 15% to those making over $30k. Clearly the Government would go broke because the remaining ~68% of the population make over $30k and were previously paying more than %15. Those making over $500k pay ~35%. Suppose everyone paid ~35%. Then everyone making under 30k would starve.QEA
Saimerro: O.K., let's throw the flat tax idea out the window. What do you think would work? Would ending corporate welfare & closing all those tax loop holes enjoyed by corporations and the uber rich do it?
I like this format better Fleetwood. Not to say I don't like your "gotcha" format and your scripted videos, this format just seems a lot more real, and more enjoyable to me.
i heard michael moore say the other day that if those who make more than $100K would pay the equal flat percentage into Social Security that the rest of us pay, that the Social Security Sytem would be solvent for 75 years...
these individuals pay NOTHING, and you know they still draw offa the system when they retire...
First, Glenn is awesome!! He made a kickass intro for me.
Second, The flat tax isn't a good idea. Let's say it is 20%. If I make $20K and someone else makes $200K, 20% of for me might prevent me from paying for necessities. 20% for that other guy might prevent him from buying a 3rd car.
The idea of a "flat" income tax rate is pure ignorance. Weigh the innate, intrinsic advantages offered to the rich: infinitely more favorable credit terms, lower prices on purchased goods, better educational opportunities, opportunities for interest and investment income and capital gains, freedom to relocate at will, and there are many others. For these reasons, the should pay income tax at a higher rate.
davis, Are you or have you ever been a teacher? I'm thinking of becoming a K-12 teacher and was interested in your thoughts the profession. Teaching is one of those professions that requires a lot of school (in CA, you must have a bachelor's and a credential, which is almost like getting a master's degree). teachers work very hard like other professionals (lawyers, drs., managers, etc.), but just happen to be paid very little relative to others. I'd love to hear your thoughts on teaching.
Ok so I'm thinking about how you'd calculate this...do you want the flat tax to apply to corporations too? Is all income the same? Because even if you just use what is taxable income now it's a pretty complicated process to get the number. I'm curious though so I will keep thinking about it. Unless a statistician shows up and answers the question.
I used a written script one time and my video did okay. The point is, a flat tax is NOT equitable. The rich use us for their labor and pay us shittily. I say the way to turn the tide is to create worker owned companies so that the workers own their work, not some manipulative fat cat. Believe me, I have helped put tons of money into the pockets of lawyers and believe me they should pay more. NO FLAT TAX! And screw the redistribution of wealth argument - it's totally mute!
50% of our tax dollars goes to pay 'interest' to the Federal Reserve (not a govt agency) for printing our money. There are tons of educational videos on youtube which explains the process, but if we end the Fed, the DEA, the FDA, and bring home all of our troops.. then the gov't really won't need to tax us much. Dr. Ron Paul explains it very well.
I had to listen to BUSH'S NAME THROWN AROUND FOR 8 YEARS

HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO HEAR HIS NAME??
HOW MANY VIDEOS ARE YOU GOING TO DO THAT USE HIS NAME??

787Bisurdaddy 3 years ago
787: Well, I'm in complete agreement on this one. It's common sense that when you tax something you get less of it; it's a penalty that incentivizes people to do less. So, eliminating a tax on production (income tax) makes a lot of sense. Replacing it with a tax on spending/consumption would incentivize saving and disincentivize spending on the credit card. It's too hard to do though; too much risk for the pols.
And there's plenty of govt spending we could cut; not from the Obama crew though.

The surplus should be given to a person who has made mimimun wage all his life so he can retire and live well too!!
groundhog2008 3 years ago
groundhog2008, you earn social security. It's taken out of our pay checks. As far as I understand it, this is YOUR money. Unless you're suggesting that he or she should give his or her soc. sec. away to those less fortunate...? 401K is also earned, and IRAs are financed with one's own money (if it's done legally) as well.
faething 3 years ago
faithing: Why should one person be allowed to keep all of that money upon retirement? He does not need a big pension, $500,000 in savings, and also get social security. His having this much money, the government should levy a large fee on what he uses in order to help the poor. That would be the fair and balanced thing to do. Goverment should raise up the economic level of the poor.
groundhog2008 3 years ago
groundhog2008, exactly how much are you willing to give up? I mean if this was your $500,000 in savings and your pension, how much should the government take?
faething 3 years ago
faething: You've asked the key question.
JohnR22926 3 years ago
I am for progressive taxation because I have been poor. I have had to live on 20,000 dollars. I was terrified getting sick and I worried about getting to work because my car wasn't reliable.
Now I make more money. I am about as happy at 200,000 as I was at 100,000, I had all my needs met at both. But moving from 20,000 to 30,000 was huge, life was so much better if I got a cut and didn't need to close it with superglue and get a scar. I am glad to help the poor because I know what it is like.
MichaelFoody 3 years ago
michael: Progressive tax rates are here to stay; the difficulty is determining where to draw the line.
JohnR22926 3 years ago
ground: You're talking about Means Testing for social security.
JohnR22926 3 years ago
"The govt collects 7.6% of your earnings, holds it for you, and then distributes it to you once you retire. It's safe and guaranteed."
I was with you until the end there. Now that Social Security numbers have become a tracking system, your money now gets funneled into keeping the operation running and providing a service for the businesses requesting it. That's why SS is running out. The money is wasted on things it was never allocated for.
Why is a SSN number required for so many things?
787Bisurdaddy 3 years ago
787: Well, I'll agree SS is a ponzi scheme. If they were honest, the govt would have kept all SS payments in a fund collecting interest; if they had, we would have SS suprluses out the butt and would have easily been able to reduce the tax from 7.6% to something much lower.
But, govt's motto is "have a dollar spend a dollar", so SS collections were used to fund all manner of social programs. The money is gone and the system is bankrupt. So, stand by for tax hikes.
JohnR22926 3 years ago
"SS collections were used to fund all manner of social programs."
The money that is supposed to go to SS isn't SS money itself, but budget for the SS program. But the actual money that you pay into SS IS being spent. By law, they are not allowed to spend it on anything but payouts, but instead, they get around that by "charging" for their services. Like all government entities, they can't keep track and end up undercharging.
787Bisurdaddy 3 years ago
You can't get a loan or do very much at all without a SSN, and every time a company has to verify your number, they use SSA. SSA is constantly inundated with requests to verify SSNs, that costs a lot of money. When the government doesn't keep adequate track of how much all this costs, our SS funds continually deplete.
All of this SS mess is due to the fact that SS has been abused, turned into something that it was never designed to be: a tracking system. Same thing will happen with Real ID.

The arbitrary owner of land, ideas, or brands reaps the majority of the rewards while the "lazy" peasants are responsible for the actual production.:p

the thing you have to think about is the fact that some people get stuck in poverty and low income. a flat tax WOULD make the rich richer and the poor poorer. also, the richer people can afford a higher tax. 30% of a low earner's income means SO much more to them than 30% of a high earner's income. for those people who come from money to money and put their wealth down to "hard" work and want a flat tax... i would say try holding down multiple jobs with kids judt so they can eat.

1. determine the minimum cost of living (food clothing shelter etc.)
2. raise the tax-free threshold to this amount (why should someone pay tax in society if they cant even afford their basic human rights?)
3. THEN figure out your income tax scheme & consumption (sales) tax on top of that.

You should get rid of the Income Tax period. It's the " new " form of slavery.
There is absolutely no benefit that comes from pay it and here's the kicker...
It's NOT in the Constitution which in turn, It's " Illegal "

Wow.

That was a good video. It was easier to catch what you were saying =P. Yeah, if taxes had a flat rate say... 15%, that would probably be better. But then again in a tiered system it means that everyone has a more similar amount of money... maybe it should be a combination? And now for bad examples...
eg. 12%=$15000-$29999 per year 18%=$30000-$74999 per year 25%=+$75000
Maybe?

I hope you just brought up the fair tax to provoke discussion. Consider that the 400 wealthiest in the US have as much money as the bottom 150,000,000, fucking 18th century French aristocracy huge. A flat tax would benefit the rich and hurt the poor who have little or no disposable income besides the cost of putting food on their plate and a roof over their head. Of course, flat tax advocates like the Neo-Con National Review don't give a flying fuck about the poor.

JimmerSD 3 years ago
I used to support the idea of a flat tax because logically it makes sense...
UNTIL...
You look at the details and realize that this would simply end up as a MONSTROUS tax cut for the wealthy and would crush small business. The worst part would be that if you made it flat to what the poor pay now, the government would collapse. If you made it higher than that, then you will triple or quadruple the number in poverty.
KingHeathen 3 years ago 2
10% I would support that.
tburke64 3 years ago

I am still amazed.

well in Australia we have 5 tax brackets.
the first $6000 you make isn't taxed
6k - 34k, 15% for every dollar in this bracket
34k - 80k, 30% "
80k - 180k, 40% "
then every dollar over is taxed at 45%
i know that once im out of uni i will in the either of the top two tax brackets and that a flat tax that you talk about would benefit me.
however i support our tax system because rich people can afford to give more than poor people to make sure that everyone has the chance to BE rich if they work

a complete overhaul would have to be enacted , and i'm all for it , but the individual states would oppose it . i genuinely feel that this system could work , we must first deal with all these pockets of taxation districts . What about the school tax , the property tax , the individual town tax , these are all questions that must be answered before a flat tax is implemented .
i say , let the voter's decide with a referendum , not just a pres election
jvforever72 3 years ago
i'm a piss poor video maker , i should get some tax credits to upgrade my equipment .
seriously though , i'm all in favor of a flat tax , but it's complicated because of the individual tax rate imposed by states . say we pay 28 percent for federal taxes , some people would pay more or less depending on what state they live in .
in order to implement this system , the tax system of each state would have to be federalized , thereby dissolving local and state taxing authorities ....

Also wealthier people should have to declare all items when entering the US to close that loophole?

No, dude. The congress passed a costitutional ammendment.
This is it:
Amendment 16 - Status of Income Tax Clarified. Ratified 2/3/1913. Note History
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.
flamablesteve 3 years ago
Is that exactly how it is written? I have heard and read from countless unrelated sources that that amendment is specific to income which does not include that which is generated from what is determined as labor. Income derived from labor is not taxable.
rodneykingstrikesbck 3 years ago
That is copy and pasted. It is the actual wording.
I just says income. and income is define as: the monetary payment received for goods or services, or from other sources, as rents or investments.
Labor would be counted as a service.
flamablesteve 3 years ago

TIAAVENDEALANTIN 3 years ago
Thus, if the amendment didn't give any NEW power to Congress, then Congress doesn't have the ability to tax anything or anyone now that it didn't before the 16th amendment.
TIAAVENDEALANTIN 3 years ago
Did you actuallt read what I posted? It says "Cogress SHALL have the power"
It is a law repealing a portion of the constitution.
Therefor, it gives them new power.
flamablesteve 3 years ago
And then the Supreme Court ruled that it DIDN'T. Supreme Court has final say on how a law is to be interpreted. A supreme Court ruling over rides it...it's part of that whole Checks and Balances thing you may have heard of that once kept our presidents from acting like Dictators and a rouge Congress from passing BS into laws.
TIAAVENDEALANTIN 3 years ago
I don't really care about a quote. People can be biased, or have an agenda.
That above is an exact copy.
It states that congress has the power to tax income. That's all there is to it.
flamablesteve 3 years ago
The Supreme Court, in a decision written by Chief Justice White, first noted that the Sixteenth Amendment did not authorize any new type of tax, nor did it repeal or revoke the tax clauses of Article I of the Constitution, quoted above. Direct taxes were, notwithstanding the advent of the Sixteenth Amendment, still subject to the rule of apportionment and indirect taxes were still subject to the rule of uniformity. — Howard M. Zaritsky, Legislative Attorney (1979)

GretnaBlast 3 years ago
Now, I do and don't understand that. Paying an equal ratio to your income seems ok to me. Hypothetically, I understand that the person making 1000$ a month would be paying 150$ which carries more weight on their income, but to have that money replaced by an equal say on what the government does with that money can not be labeled by a price. I dunno, double edged sword?
0c4pnh4nk 3 years ago
Best video yet! Save the bells and whistles for television. Income Tax, according to many internet sources, just pays interest on the national debt. The government could grow a set of nuts and use the income money to establish their own interest free stimulus loans to businesses but then we would have to end the federal reserve. Instead the high end coterie of crooks that cover each others asses remain in jobs of influence fucking over even those with educations that seek upward mobility...

Rogue2373 3 years ago
Any random tax percentage rate on a working-class family could force them to have to choose between necessities of life while that same rate on a far higher income would only potentially result in the cutting or limiting of certain luxuries, if that.
Taxes and the social programs they can support lead to the betterment of society, a condition from which everyone benefits.

HalcyonRain321 3 years ago
A flat tax, as everyone has already said, would fairly well either break the bank for the low income peoples or lessen the load on wealthy so that the government would be broke. The absolute inverse of this would be to tax the wealthy so severely and the poor so lightly, that they both make equal amounts. The trick is to find the balance where the taxes don't increase so much for the rich as to keep people from working but high enough so that armies of peasants aren't raiding houses of the rich.

Ok so I'm thinking about how you'd calculate this...do you want the flat tax to apply to corporations too? Is all income the same?
