I was doing nighttime photography last night and didn't even know about beavers doing this and it was in the dark near a river. Holy shit. I almost crapped my self. I had a flashlight and only saw the eyes.
When a beaver feels threatened by danger it will slap its tail on the water as a warning to the predator. Great Video, That would have startled me too. I have a video here on youtube also with a beaver slapping it's tail, we were getting to close with our kayaks.

Actually, the tail-slap is to warn other beavers of possible danger. It is not to warn predators.
As soon as the tail is slapped, other beavers in the area will quickly submerge themselves.

True - they really don't come up for a long time!
