  • SHE THE QUEEN OF SOUL

  • Adele from a previous decade?

  • @FLOGURFACE Hmmm no.......Adele is good but not that good

  • the voice of the early 60s...her voice transports me back to that time....

  • the queen of blue eyed soul

  • It's Madeline Bell and Kiki Dee on backing vocals, but is the tiny woman in between them Lesley Duncan? The liner notes to the CD reissue of Madeline's "Bell's a Poppin'" said the four frequently sang on each others' records, but I'm not familiar with Lesley Duncan.

  • Happy Birthday DUSTY :-)

  • Proof Divine!

    Tennessee didn't invent BIG HAIR!!

    Love it!!

  • I hope all the miming, lyp synching, wannabees who seem to always be on TV today watch this. This is the quality of entertainment we used to have. Thanks for posting.

  • this is when singers could sing, and sing live well, Connie Francis, Petula Clark, and Miss Dusty Springfield

  • A damn shame radio stations in this country only play a couple of her songs.

  • Thanks

  • i love how she waves and winks at the audience. Dusty is divine!

  • I love Shake - first heard Sam Cooke doing it and loved it - Dusty's version is fantastic! xx

  • Her look isn't necessarily incompatible with her style. The only thing shocking is that she's white.

  • Is that Madeleine Bell in the backing singers?

  • @jnmklo9 yep it sure is. My original comment is below, she was a regular backing singer for Dusty and stayed a friends right up to Dusty's death.

  • i love her she has so much fun.

  • awesome, thanks for the upload!

  • She must have been driving straight guys wild...

  • omg Madeline Bell the coloured girl on backing vocals she went on to have hits with Blue Mink great singer in her own right.

  • Fantastic. First time I've seen the NME performance complete. I adored seeing this so thank you so much.

  • Anyone know if footage of the 1967 Poll Winners show exists, with Cream ,The Move etc etc

  • Dusty's back-up singers, left to right, Madeline Bell, Leslie Dunham, and Kiki Dee.

  • Kiki, she of 'Don't go breaking my heart' the duet with Elton John

  • Is that a young KIKI DEE on backin?

  • Far right? Yes, I believe it is.... with the wonderful MADELINE BELL. Ah, those were the days... when pop singers had voices!

  • RESPECT SIMPLY RESPECT TO DUSTY

  • This is the IDOL OF MY HEART.

    Lucky audience.

  • WOW that high notes she growls out at 6:54 is BRILLIANT : D

  • Just loved Dusty's music. So beautiful and talented.

  • That anorexia thing I don't think it was meant to take offence but I can understand how some would.

I think, that word was used, wrongly so, just to say Dusty was lovely and slim.

  • its amazing watching clips like this that Dusty was so cripplying insecure. How could someone possibly come off stage after this and think it wasnt anything but sensational. Mindboggling

  • From reading her biography, her insecurity was more about off-stage self-esteem issues than on-stage ones.

  • When I hear Dusty, in her prime, belting out tunes like no one else could, I think of two things that really hurt her voice later on. One was smoking... cigarettes should have never touched those beautiful lips. The other is the Cortisone (steroid) throat sprays the doctors used to treat her bouts of laryngitis. DAMN THEM!!! Perhaps they didn't know better back then, but it's still a shame and a sin what damage they probably did! I still love her "soft" voice- but think what could have been.

  • Sad to say, I've no doubt her own abuse of drugs and alcohol played a large part in losing the pure, high soft part of her voice.

Have you heard the version of "A Love Like Yours" on the "Beautiful Soul" CD - it's painful to hear her so out of it.

  • @jemb2000 That's the classical out-of-tune style song I've ever heard. But her version in 1978 in album "It Begins Again" is not that terrible.

  • the hair-spray industry loved her :=)

  • I love the way she bounces onto the stage and waves intermitently at the audience and band members.

  • Dusty sang from the heart and performed graciously

  • She was incomparable both vocally and as a mover with mike in hand on stage.

  • Thye one and only Dusty Springfield, never equalled, never beaten, even second place to Dusty is way back...

Dusty, love and miss you loads.

Ray♥ & Ethan♥ X X X .yup, I'm bringing up my 5 year old nephew to appreciate Dusty and he does.

  • I encourage all Dusty fans to get a copy of the new[ 2009] book, Dusty:Queen of the Post mods. It's academic rather than strictly biographical but the analysis of her music and on stage performance [lots of pics make the point] is fascinating as it traces her significant contribution to music and the role she played importing American soul music to UK/ Europe.

  • Hello DonelMac Thanks for informing about the new book about Dusty. Do you know if this book is available in bookstores? I'm guessing it is but since many other things concerning Dusty are available online I wanted to ask just to see if you may know. Thanks again for this info.

  • Dusty is georgeously anorexic here, a pearl goddess from the stratospheric tip of her hairpiece down to the zip on her bottom. She alone shines and holds the stage, making that a night to remember. Unlike Dusty that twit DJ Murray and the "Echos, one of the finest groups in the country" are forgettable.

  • there is nothing "gorgeous" about mental illness, what a strange thing to say!!

  • I meant not in a clinical sense. I meant that Dusty was very slight of build. Sorry for the confusion, 29051967.

  • I don't think she was anorexic here, I'm 27 old now and I'm have very similar body complexion and i'm can guarantee you that I eat more than "normal" people, but the nerves, stress and work heavily 10 hours at day can do the rest... please there's a lots of people (both sexes) that are thin but they doesn't have ANOREXIA

  • Thanks! A brilliant performance by Miss Dusty!

Anyone else think she looks so tiny and thin at this performance?

  • @alicetheactress she's short, about 5 feet 3 in

  • i think its madeline bell the black backin singer with the gap in her teeth. and the band sounds a cut well above the other bands who wer on pro s to a man . so tight in tune and perfect timing .dusy well just fabulous

  • A voice that can move mountains.

  • I would have given everything I got to be there that night seeing Dusty singing with her heart out and saying goodbye like the godess queen she is.

  • I love this video...take a listen at 2:20...I love that lil part...she rocks that!! Go Dusty!!

  • What a boring crowd. Must have been a real drag to be a musician back then for such sedate crowds.

  • Not boring at all - just appreciating good music. Believe it or not the musicians used to prefer to be heard. They had no fear of people listening to them because they could sing. Unlike today where the musicians prefer the crowds to shout and make a noise to cover up their poor excuses for singing.

  • Well said 7littleboys! I also agree with your statement " pity people didn't appreciate what we had then".

  • This is like duffy

  • Duffy has sated that Miss Springfield was a hue inspiration for her....but no look a like will ever beat out Dusty Springfield....the queen of blue eyed soul!

  • not really...Duffy is sort of like a shaved bear pretending to be a soul singer...as if singing in a shit put on voice makes you 'soul'

One flash in the pan I can do without being reminded of!

  • A shaved bear... brilliant line.

The Duffy/Dusty comparison is merely opportunistic PR. Bleaching and back-combing a girl's hair does not turn her into Dusty Springfield, for God's sake.

  • you should've gone to specsavers!

  • OMG...my first time ever hearing her...WOW...WOW....WOW!!!

  • That is why Dusty is the best - EVER.

  • I have never seen this video. The crystal clear voice of Dusty permeates these songs. Correct me if I am wrong. Didn't that jerk Phil Specter with his wall of sound screw up 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' along with another Dusty song? Her voice is so great on this video!

  • Spector didn't produce Dusty,

I think Johnny Franz was the producer of her records at the time.

  • Dusty was the greatest of them all.

    Nobody else comes close.

  • The Supremes version of shake is so mediocre and bland, Dustys version is so powerful and sounds like it was supposed to be sung.

  • Oh my god... fabulous!

  • Man, that skinny little white girl could belt out "Shake"!! What a gift she had! And I'll always love her for punching Buddy Rich in the face in Vegas! The contract called for Buddy's band to back her, and he gave Dusty some lip at rehearsal. POW! Attagirl, Dusty!!

  • Nice! When did Dusty play Vegas?

  • Dusty played with Buddy Rich Orchestra in New York - Basin Street East, I think,

He refused to give Dusty the rehearsal time she requested with his musicians and berated her on stage, calling her "third-rate" as he introduced her to the audience. Dickhead witha capital D.

  • That's okay... she "popped him one" and knocked his toupee off... she said he never forgave her for that. Rich's band chipped in and bought her boxing gloves in appreciation.

  • Much better than all the moaning, groaning female singers of today.

  • @TheDoctor394 Oh you are so right.

  • I Love this clip. Dusty is in great voice, and it's a wonderful song. I keep being drawn to the incompatibility of Dusty's look (fashionable English lady with lots of hairspray...), and the music she's singing (essentially black soul music). But that's what made her so special, and a real trail blazer.

  • @trschaefer She's called White Lady of the Soul, but she's not only soul, she's versatile. From folk to rock to Italian music, she spanned the great scene of music.

  • @trschaefer I agree with that, the look and the music doesn't necessarily go together but this is what is so great and unique.

  • @trschaefer Dusty helped Motown get launched in the UK. If you get a chance, watch the Motown show that she put on English tv with a lot of the Motown greats.

  • Thank you, nyrainbow2, for posting this treasure trove of NME clips. What great documentation of the greatest era in pop music. Dusty in particular is a treat to watch and hear. (Also check out NME 1965 posting of the Seekers singing two songs composed by Dusty's brother)

  • Sometimes if you change your teeth, you could mess up your voice. That is why Jewel keeps her teeth that way.

  • Wish I was there! What a bodylanguage, feeling for and voise! I love her!!

  • With the amazing Pete Woolf on drums, my dad.

  • Cool,woolfy101!!

  • What a great delight is gotta be to witness Dusty this young and live...Unforgettable.

  • Dusty could sing anything, and on her recordings she perfectly crafted every word and every phrase. In my opinion, these qualities made her the greatest female singer of the 20th Century.

  • I miss you my beloved Dusty R.I.P.

  • unbelievable perfect, every song she's singing... she's the best!

  • I agree. No-one could or ever will come close to Dusty. Pity people didn't appreciate what we had then.

  • What a treat!!! thank you NY

  • GREAT video, thanks very much!

    Frans Jansen, Holland

  • anyone can help me out who is the two female singer video is great thank you

  • Do you mean backing singers? One is Madeleine Bell.

  • Madeline Bell & Kiki Dee.

  • The third is Leslie Duncan (she of the short stature but lilting, perky harmony).:)
