When did I say I had been to Burma? I asked if you had, because there is a TON of slavery there. The army enslaves whole villages to build pipelines for US gas companies. I read an excerpt from a plantation owner's daughter (where I saw the slave quarters I recall above) and she said basically, the war came and went, but nothing really changed here on the plantation. In some ways it was worse than prewar slavery, because of the random terrorism. But from 1865-1877 (reconstruction) it was great. Blacks went to congress.

The CSA Constitution considerably reduced states rights. It barred them from banning slavery and introduced a line item veto. There is little difference between a swastika and a CSA battle flag.

The CSA Army marched nobly onto batlefields against an enemy that invaded their land, while Hitler ruthlessly decimated a large population of innocent Jews who carried no weapons into battle. My mother was a holocaust victim. There is no difference between enslaving and slaughtering Jews, Gypsies, and intellectuals and enslaving and slaughtering Africans. In fact, until the US Army started enlisting ex-slaves, we Jews had more opportunity and success in defending ourselves. Your ancestor fought for a racist ideology. There was nothing noble about the CSA army, which itself was entirely dependent on slaves for logistical support.

lol, this is hilarious. A swastika? Are you suggesting that if the CSA had flourished it would still today be a country that openly used slavery as a means of production or export? Even South Africa has done away with Apartheid. If youre going to say that you might as well say many modern flags are racist, including and especially the Union Jack and the various flags of the United States (which hid it's racism during the civil war behind Lincoln's ideals. He was anti-slavery, not the Union.)

I didn't say that. However it isn't far fetched. Slavery is common all over the world. Been to Burma lately? Not only would the CSA have preserved slavery, they DID preserve it after the 1876 election. I've been in ante-bellum slave quarters that were occupied by debt peonage sharecroppers until 1980. Have you ever talked to a slave? I have. My great grandmother was one. And you really have no understanding of US history. Union anti-slavery was why the south seceded. Read their declarations.

Yes I have been to SA lately. Also Zimbabwe. I am not trying to seem more educated than you. I just apparently am more educated than you. And it happens that post-colonial studies is my field. There is still slavery in US territories. One of Trent Lott's final acts was to block legislation to end slavery in Saipan. Recently a slave ring was busted in Los Angeles. Speculation on CSA law a century after they started a war solely to keep slavery legal is not even slightly relevant to my point.

When did I say I had been to Burma? I asked if you had, because there is a TON of slavery there. The army enslaves whole villages to build pipelines for US gas companies. Odds are you own clothes made by burmese slaves. There is also plenty of slavery in China and Bangladesh, among many other countries. I can prove I was in Zim, because I shot a ton of video there. Been twice in the last three years. No video from SA though, because JoBerg is fucking depressing and I only had so much tape.

Although, now that you mention it, I have been pretty close to the Burmese border in northern Thailand. There are a lot of Burmese refugees there, fleeing enslavement by the Army. Or if they are Karen, fleeing genocide.
I am afraid it is you with your head up your ass. It only takes a trivial knowledge of US history to understand that the Confederacy was an oppressive, racist oligarchy. Just go read their own historical documents. Start with their constitution. That alone is clear.

@thegranitebison They may not have preserved slavery but they introduced segregation in its place, which lasted into the 1960's along with the KKK. In my opinion not much difference from slavery in some ways even worse.

@686204: No they preserved slavery, via debt peonage. There was no freedom of movement or assembly and a constant campaign of physical terror. I read an excerpt from a plantation owner's daughter (where I saw the slave quarters I recall above) and she said basically, the war came and went, but nothing really changed here on the plantation. In some ways it was worse than prewar slavery, because of the random terrorism. But from 1865-1877 (reconstruction) it was great. Blacks went to congress.

The south's only protection from abolition was as part of the union. By seceding, they could no longer enjoy the legal protection from their northern brothers. Remember, the underground railroad did not end at the Mason-Dixon line. Secession was a death knell to southern slavery and most in the south knew this at the time.
