i think serena has improved since the spring of 08... she's played very consistently all of 08, going on a 18 match win streak in the spring and then finaling at Wimbledon and winning the US Open. Then in 09, she continued fighting and being consistent. This year (2010), she seems to be serving better than ever and there's a sense of calm and command with her game. Maybe it's good she blew up at the US Open 09?
some suggest that henin may have been using a banned substance before and stopped using it bc she failed a drug test, i think after this match she went into retirement. some suggest that this allowed her to leave without embarrassment. according to her she was just burntout and since reuniting with her family she didn't have the drive to stay on the tour.

What is left in women's game now. Jelena always sick and v.poor consistency, hasn't won a single grand slam. Ivanovic when everybody thought after her first GS she'll be a success, where is she now, loses most of the time for qualifiers. Kuznetsova was never a big contender, Dementieva is getting too old and so far not a single GS. The younger ones Wozniack, Agnieska, etc,etc cannot cope with the power of today's game. Safina is more like a wannabe, Mauresmo is just waiting her time to retire
I wouldn't be so pesimistic. There are many talents out there, GS are not the only thing what matters, there are plenty other tournaments, too which offer some great quality tennis. I think all the who's-got-more-GS charade began since somebody started off media bullying of Dinara and it goes on and on. Interestingly, in the past players such as Tracy Austin who holds just 2 slam titles to her name were and are still considered great. Women's tennis is still "alive". Just give it a chance.

It has played a pretty big role, but it's difficult to isolate power from the rest of anyone's game - and I think it's important to keep in mind that in a WTA where nearly everyone hits really hard, Serena's relative consistency, ability to use angles to open up the court, and shot disguise (as well as a good bit of adaptive variety) have managed to separate her from the pack even when her serve has failed.

If all you needed was power to be a tennis player then surely Mike Tyson would be great on a tennis court. power is NOTHING without precision and control, not to mention technique. It takes a lot of control to hit the ball that hard and keep it inside the court. Serena is also a great strategist on the court too, she eyes her spots and can serve with pin point accuracy unlike most of the other women who throw the ball up on a wing and a prayer.

I think Henin was definitely better than the sisters. She was more consistent and did not "save herself" just for the Slams and big tournaments as they often do these days. She had beaten many many great players in her career, you cant say she had beaten just the WS.

However, she was absolutely fed up with losing to Justine, and I believe that if this were at Roland Garros, the result would have been the same. I'd be shocked if Justine ever beats her again.

Henin left tennis under the false pretense of retirement after she started losing in early 2008. She lost badly to Maria at the AO, then to Safina in Germany, and to Serena in Miami.
She wanted time off and did not have the guts to be truthful about it...cowardly; decepive.
After seeing the recent success by Kim, she's rushing back.

We are then left with Sharapova still young, but coming back from shoulder injury, with her forever serving motion problem. I think she's one of the few that can make a challenge against the sisters, but first has to deal with her ghost of the past Serena Williams, everytime they play she loses or is trashed. What is left in women's game now. Jelena always sick and v.poor consistency, hasn't won a single grand slam. Ivanovic when everybody thought after her first GS she'll be a success, where is she now, loses most of the time for qualifiers. Kuznetsova was never a big contender, Dementieva is getting too old and so far not a single GS. The younger ones Wozniack, Agnieska, etc,etc cannot cope with the power of today's game. I wouldn't be so pesimistic. There are many talents out there, GS are not the only thing what matters, there are plenty other tournaments, too which offer some great quality tennis. I think all the who's-got-more-GS charade began since somebody started off media bullying of Dinara and it goes on and on. Interestingly, in the past players such as Tracy Austin who holds just 2 slam titles to her name were and are still considered great. Women's tennis is still "alive". Just give it a chance.

It has played a pretty big role, but it's difficult to isolate power from the rest of anyone's game - and I think it's important to keep in mind that in a WTA where nearly everyone hits really hard, Serena's relative consistency, ability to use angles to open up the court, and shot disguise (as well as a good bit of adaptive variety) have managed to separate her from the pack even when her serve has failed.

It takes a lot of control to hit the ball that hard and keep it inside the court. I will have to disagree with you on that...
Henin is a great player don't get me wrong. I would agree that she should be among the greatest clay court players (no doubt about it). But she can't be put with the 3 greatest. She has won 7 grand slam titles and a gold medal, same with Venus (minus the doubles). what makes her better? Beating the Williams sisters in a tournament does not make someone the greatest player.

I think Henin was definitely better than the sisters. She was more consistent and did not "save herself" just for the Slams and big tournaments as they often do these days. She had beaten many many great players in her career, you cant say she had beaten just the WS.

more consistent? I will say too consistent... I mean, she played too many tournaments and that's unhealthy, and she knows that. What you call "save herself" has been a better alternative for a longer career, hasn't it?
and I'm pretty sure you see it from the fans perspective. what the players do now is play when healthy enough to avoid predictable injuries or sickness. People want to see players in all tournaments, but there is only that many matches in a row a body can take...

Justine did what great champions do: she did her best when she was playing. It is hard, not everyone's physique can bear it, I do agree, but that is what differs champions from the rest. I think Serena is a good player,very strong, but to me she never will be one of the greatest. Even though Justine's no longer on the scene and did not win that many GS titles I think she has been a great ambassador for tennis.

champions do with what they have... it doesn't mean playing blindly just to satisfy the public. Justine did her best? really? she withdrew in the final against Mauresmo in Aussie open 2006 (no champion withdraw unless it's a serious injury. Serena didn't in Wimbledon), and also in FedCup Vs Italy. so saying that Justine did her best while Serena didn't is very biased. Serena played with an injury in Miami this year and reached the final

Totally agree with you MLBoykin... except Venus no other player intimidates Serena (or Vee)! I always thought that overall Serena was a much better player than Justine (mental, strength, entertainment)! I don't think anyone really misses justine on the tour. Serena and Vee have brought so much more to women tennis!

there's a difference between not playing your best and not being allowed to play your best. this situation was the latter. it's similar to how nadal cripples federer, but with less frequency in the rivalry between these ladies. henin's body language said it all. she was frustrated because she was not allowed to play her game. completely shut out like sharapova at the 2007 australian open.
when serena is playing her A/A+ game all you can do is pray for an injury.

Well, I don't think that's so. As she said herself when she quit tennis, she no longer had the desire and the strenght to fight. If the fire's no longer there, I can understand the best option for her was to quit. That doesn't have to mean she can't stand losing, does it? Well, at least in my opinion. I feel like Justine Henin is one of those players who would do anything to win, as evidenced with her controversial hand incident during her semifinal match with Serena at the 2003 French Open. When she is winning, she loves the sport; but when she is losing, she can't handle it.
I feel like there is some truth that the reason why Justine quit in 2008 was because she was just losing too much.

Appel is right. None of us are mindreaders HOWEVER. When Henin was kicking ass and steamrolling over everyone. SHE JUST LOVED TENNIS. When Venus, Serena, and even Sharapova and Safina started handing her ass to her, she decided the game wasn't fun anymore.

Exactly! Henin definately has questionable character; I feel like she is a sore loser and can't accept it when she is losing. Remember her australian open final 2006 with Mauresmo...she was trailing 6-1, 2-0 during that match (Mauresmo was kicking her ass) and all of a sudden she retired. Henin said that the reason why she retired was because of stomach pain and that she was not fit. However, she said to the press after her semi-final match with sharapova that she was at the peak of her fitness.
