Thanks for all the great comments. Building for snow is much like mud, you need big horsepower, big tires, and good ground clearance. Plus a great cooling system, we run 2 or 3 tranny coolers and large custom radiators.
I hope to have my Bronc running again soon and I have an HD camera now so I can post some good video.
im definately trying that next summer when i put some bigger tires and new parts in my 1973 gmc!!!!! im ready i thought mudding was fun looks like i just found a new hobby!!!! haha keep goin boys
@Em0cLoWn the rigs with beadlocks are aired down to 4 psi, I run mine at 8 psi because I don't have beadlocks. You really can't run any lower without blowing the tires off the rims. Thanks for the comment.
That's so awesome, I saw that silver jeep at a gas station in Laramie, WY in Jan of 2008. I just went back and found the picture I took. I thought it was a show jeep, glad to see it on the trail. All awesome rigs!
@yerwrng In your case those rigs should be fine with skinny tires up to 2-3feet. After that you'll push to much snow and floating will become an advantage. But below that skinny tall tires are better.
from what i see the guys driving are doin a pretty damn good job.... snow can change alot from place to place day to day, deep powder.... the way their wheelin is just about the only way.... great vid good luck w/ all the tards tellin you how to drive lol!!
Light Snow Thin tires, Deep Deep Snow Like Walden Wide tires With about 8lbs Of Air will help u stay on top of the snow Jduncan that snow is almost 3ft deep we gothere often!!
650 easy, I wanted to build a 418 with C.H.I top end for a flatty but went with big block. Now A 427 W looks good, If only the play funds were a little bigger LOL.
Big blocks are cool too, nuthin whong with them when you want cubic inches without spending a ton of money.
I went small block because I wanted to use the Holley 174 supercharger. It should help alot when we are up at 10k feet.
My play funds have diminished over the last couple years and that's why it's taking so long to put my new motor in. Luckily I built it when I had the money. LOL
The red one is a 351W stroked to 418ci with AFR 205 heads, Accel DFI Throttle body injection, it's a 550 hp motor.
My yellow Bronc is getting a newly built 351W stroked to 393ci, World heads, custom Lunati cam, holley supercharger, and Holley Commander 950 throttle body injection, it's a 600-650hp motor.
We like to go fast when we can and play "Baja Racer". The red Bronc will sometimes hit 55-60 mph on the forest roads with 3-4 ft of snow, if we can stay on top. That's why we build the big horsepower motors.
No, Many ways to wheel and have fun. I run between 1-3 psi and no beadlocks. Funny thing is no traction at 4 psi but go to 3.5 and it will make a big diff. I snow wheel, mud, rocks, hills anything with 4x4. Not trying to piss in your cheereos, just ?
Your first comment was a funny way of making friends.
Even with beadlocks we roll the inside bead off with 4psi when sliding around corners on the fire roads at 40 mph. Lowering the pressure any more means we either have to slow down, reseat more beads, or keep airing up and down. None of those are much fun so we run what works best all around.
Holley makes two versions of their TBI (Throttle Body Injection) systems. A dual injector (2bbl) system that has two throttle plates like a 2bbl carb and a 4 injector (4bbl) system that has 4 throttle plates like a 4bbl carb.
My system will be the 4 injector electronic fuel injection system, 4bbl EFI.
We don't play in the mud but from what I've seen in Top Truck Challenge videos they don't work that great. Interco IROKS, LTB's, and TSL's work much better for snow, and for mud imo.
do you guys have a build thread for that jeep? checked the usual sites(jeepforum, pirate4x4, etc)...looking for ideas on building a new jeep...or might just go fullsize chevy.
No build thread I'm afraid, the owner is not much of an internet guy. It has a 630hp LS7, 4L80E trans, Atlas t-case, 14 bolt rear, and is getting a custom Dana 70 front axle with 40 spline CTM shafts. It's got Detroit lockers f/r, 5.38 gears, 20" wheels, 46" Mickey Thompson Claws, and PSC full hydro steering. The Claws don't work so great. The front and rear 4 link were designed by him and I think the Bilsten coilovers are 16" (maybe 14"?).
whats that yellow baby running? is that yours? not too much of a fan of anything other than chevy, dodge, or jeep, but damn...those broncos are pretty nice. having hard time figuring out what to build....jeep, dodge, chevy, toyota, or? like the cheapness of a fullsize truck, but like the ability to go into tight spots with a jeep. wish i could have like 5 different wheelers lol
The yellow Bronc is mine. It had a 302 with a Holley roots blower and EFI but I blew it up. It is getting a 650hp 351W stroked to 393ci w/ supercharger and 4bbl EFI. Yeah, it's hard to decide. LOL We are just Ford guys and have owned and loved our Bronc for many many years but I also have a 77 Chevy Blazer that I am fixing up for my daughter.
Well up until 10 years ago i used to drive the blue mountains in a 75 Cj5 258 I6 with toyota axles arb airlockers 538 ring and pinion set stock 3 speed with a full rangr transfercase backed by a warn overdrive sitting one 38" monster mudders.HAve driving in dry/wet and even in near white out conditions.Wasnt trying to be a know it all just thinking more of the revs you put your vehicles through to climb a hill when low range and 3 lbs of air is more efftive.
We are running 3-4 psi and we are in low range. The revs are necessary for our snow conditions to keep on top of the snow and the speed is required to get up the steep dunes.
In the last ten years we have spent alot of time in the snow trying to figure out what works. We have had many people come with us that thought they could crawl the snow or thought their lightweight rigs would float better with less horsepower and we have yet to see it happen. Come on out and show us "textbook snow wheeling" and we'll hang out; but your comments most certainly do indicate that you are trying to be a know it all.
You have no idea how steep the hill is at the beginning of the video. Did you notice that the hard pack snow we are hitting at the top is over the hood of a Jeep on 46's?
Jubilee run is a nice video but it's a totally different deal. In the spring when the snow is wet we can crawl through it in the mountains too. This is Jan at the sand dunes, different snow conditions and much steeper.
Why didnt you guys just air down? and gassing it all your doing is digging ruts and really getting nowhere.... but it was entertaining lol

Not if you're driving in shallow snow or driving highway, but big floaty tires are the only way to go in real deep snow
