But the derivatives market which is essentially betting on whether market prices will go up or down is a good place to start. There's a move to tax 0.05% on transactions that occur in the derivatives market, known as the "Robin Hood Tax". Personally I wouldn't have called it that, but it's a miniscule tax and could raise more than 200 BILLION dollars a year. I'd say that's at least a reasonable place to start.

Personally I don't think anyone should be smoking in the park, but again the people that are hit hardest by this economy are the ones most likely to turn to drugs. At the very least the good people at Food Not Bombs are helping to feed these people down at Occupy. Believe me, its hard to live in a tent city with so many people that have these problems, but it's something that has to be done.
@enlightenedone676 The problem started in 1988 when the Mental Health Act was changed by people who "thought" they were doing the right thing had the Statute changed so you could not force people to take their medication ( Unless they were on a Form 1 or Form 9). Now many of these people are medication noncompliant because they see the drugs as being part of their problem (due to their perception of the World). In the field your in I suspect you already know that. .
@SuperTRINISH Actually my girlfriend is a nurse, and her brother has schizophrenia, so it's definitely a personal issue for us as well as a professional one. I'm sure that tied into the government's decision to close mental health facilities since people could no longer be 'forced' to stay there. So the question becomes how do we care for these people? When he ran away to BC he found enormous mental health support, but his family support was here so he moved back. It would be nice to have both.

Unfortuately , many people who have mental issues , due to their paranoia, see the medication as being part of the problem. They start to feel better then stop taking their meds. BC's version has more stringent requirements that patients comply with their prescibed medication needs.

to the majority of people the Occupy protesters look just as crazy, silly and ignorant as the Tea Party protesters looked (and are in reality) but look what that groups accomplished. If the Occupy movement wants realistic change I'd suggest emulating the tactics the Tea Party used in the US and begin a "Common Sense Revolution". Get organized, get leadership, formulate a easily understood platform with realistic goals and an action plan.

@SuperTRINISH The main problem isn't hard working people like us, to be certain. But the derivatives market which is essentially betting on whether market prices will go up or down is a good place to start. There's a move to tax 0.05% on transactions that occur in the derivatives market, known as the "Robin Hood Tax". Personally I wouldn't have called it that, but it's a miniscule tax and could raise more than 200 BILLION dollars a year. I'd say that's at least a reasonable place to start.

Personally I don't think anyone should be smoking in the park, but again the people that are hit hardest by this economy are the ones most likely to turn to drugs. Just because people can't fully articulate why they're upset with the system doesn't mean that they don't have a grievance. If you were unemployed and homeless you'd probably have no idea what derivatives were either!

@SuperTRINISH I think that's where most Canadians don't understand what's going on with the Occupy movement. The call isn't to raise taxes on people that only make $100,000 dollars. I don't mean to sound mean by saying ONLY, but seriously, there are multi-BILLION dollar markets that are barely being taxed. To put that in perspective, the work of someone that trades in derivatives is worth hundreds of times your labour. Imagine them doing your work x100. I don't think so!

I object to people "occupying" a public park and depriving people of its use. If I call you Losers its because I'm fed up with this mindless "occupation" and the use of Park. I Love your IDEA as much as I KNOW it is simply unattainable. But enough already!!!! Homelessness is primarily a Mental Health and substance abuse issue; I know friends in the field and I know the poverty from that stand point has nothing to do with the banks or the economics of Canada.

@SuperTRINISH Did you know that they cut funding to mental health and addiction facilities not too long ago, and now that's why we have such a high rate of people with these illnesses that are homeless? At the very least the good people at Food Not Bombs are helping to feed these people down at Occupy. Believe me, its hard to live in a tent city with so many people that have these problems, but it's something that has to be done.

@enlightenedone676 The problem started in 1988 when the Mental Health Act was changed by people who "thought" they were doing the right thing had the Statute changed so you could not force people to take their medication ( Unless they were on a Form 1 or Form 9). Now many of these people are medication noncompliant because they see the drugs as being part of their problem (due to their perception of the World). In the field your in I suspect you already know that. .

@SuperTRINISH Actually my girlfriend is a nurse, and her brother has schizophrenia, so it's definitely a personal issue for us as well as a professional one. I'm sure that tied into the government's decision to close mental health facilities since people could no longer be 'forced' to stay there. So the question becomes how do we care for these people? When he ran away to BC he found enormous mental health support, but his family support was here so he moved back. It would be nice to have both.

@enlightenedone676 It would have to involve changing the Mental Health Act to allow some sort of control to ensure medication compliance. Unfortuately , many people who have mental issues , due to their paranoia, see the medication as being part of the problem. They start to feel better then stop taking their meds. BC's version has more stringent requirements that patients comply with their prescibed medication needs.

But your quite right. During the Harris error there was a 60% decrease in beds for the mentally ill under the pretext of providing homes "within the community" so they could become part of the community. This translated into privately owned but government funded "Half Way" homes. Quite often these halfway homes were ( and still are) not properly trained or equipped to deal with mental Illness.
