  • This Is Fucking Awesome

  • Now i'm checking these out after hearing Nirvanas covers , not to compare just to explore more music. i really like the meat puppets actually , The original versions of Plateau and Oh me are Way better then the nirvana covers. but honestly i think that nirvana , which you can't put full credit too because The brothers from the meat puppets still did the guitar work just Kurt sang. but i really like MTV unplugged version better. might just have to listen this a few more times though

  • All of you shut the fuck up Nickelback is good but why mention them on a Meat Puppets song??

  • @lamcola65 shut the f*** up you retard!

  • i hope your joking

  • @Iamcola65 haha. nickelback's talent is an oxymoron. nickelback sucks my nuts XD

  • hahahaha he said nickelback

  • Nickelback??? Talent??? Is it even possible to use those same words in the same sentence without puking?

  • This version sounds like a primitive Primus. I love the electric guitar solos!

  • By the way, I love this song.

  • Music is a math and theory, but it is more about the emotion. And, just because something is fast, doesn't mean that it is awesome. It's the injection of the emotion that counts. You can't form an opinion about music with out feeling emotion. Unless; of course, you don't look at music as a conduit for emotions that interprets them into a tangiable means to which our mathematical and logical based brains can understand. If that is the case, then I truly feel sorry for you.

  • @ pmasta333 - calm down, little psycho! don't work yourself into a rage. you're only acting angry about Nirvana because you are a musical drip. a cipher who can't accept that Kurt Cobain was a gifted musician. You talking about Beethoven and Bach, but what do you know about them? Every kind of music, even Steve Vai and his fusion shit is nothing compared to the complex of classical music. But that will lead to nothing! Music is more than theory and maths, its an art and its about feelings.

  • @plerimest sounds to me like ur the psycho. and i obviously no rock music is about powerchords, and ur angry comment just agreed 100% with what i said so u are obviously the idiot here. cuz you are preaching to the choir. Im just stating the cold facts down.

  • Everyone shut the fuck up about Kurt's guitar skills...it's not about the guitar technique or how he sang or whatever. It's about the music...people play how they want to play and if yall can't accept that, then go listen to the music you like and stop dogging on Nirvana, because they were a great band.

    End of story.

  • kumbaya, thats you when you type

  • @tubbythug92

It's 'utmost' respect. I'm not trying to be a bastard or anything. Just trying to help.

And, I agree with you. It's all about the soul and the emotion that it conveys throught the music.

  • through*

  • ok i take that back i didnt grow to hate them its just after playing guitar i just slowly started to grow out of a lot of music because i just dont get the same feeling that i get from other genres that are more comlex. and i am not even a huge fan of technical stuff. i just like really out of the box like les claypool stlye shit

  • you are wrong too i used to idolize nirvana they made me want to play guitar. then I did and soon started to hate them

  • this is much more laidback than nirvana's version. easier on the ears than kurt's screeching. i like it as much as nirvana's version. awesome. 5/5

  • @pmasta333 - fuck off with Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteem. I accept their music but thats just virtuos guitar wank, especially Malmsteem. you call my music taste primitiv, although you dont know it? well good argumentation! Dylan and Cash didnot play solos cause guitars back then sucked?? Come on, thats total bullshit, Jimi Hendrix was the same age than Dylan and played much solos. The point is, there are rhythm guitarists and solo guitarists. Are you too stupid to understand that?

  • @plerimest I agree with you, I personally enjoy simple soulful melodies more than crazy technical stuff with no soul (Vai is mostly showboating, I'm not that much into Malmsteen). One of the few technical instrumental guitarists I really like is Joe Satraini because his guitar playing is more melodious than just shredding and he also does a good deal of simple melodies, not just shred.

Btw this song and those kind of songs have different appeals, can't say I hate either.

  • @retroguy02

Satriani is the man and btw i never siad anything about one of those artists they brought that up. I never said Nirvana should have epic solos but at leat have something melodic and musically valued once in a while

  • @plerimest

Not really cuz I am a rythm guitarist and a lead guitarist. And good rythm players comp chords and add extra voicings. Kurt just plays 5 chords all the time along with all new rock groups who dont complete barrre chords or add any flavor to open voicings. Also 16th note picking with pecussion cuz im a funk player

  • sweet -5 i was shootin for more

  • i prefer this one to nirvana's

  • the point isnt thatt he didnt play solos its that he couldnt if he wanted. Johnny cash, and dylan could. and they didnt cuz guitars back then sucked

  • Nirvana is not one of my favourite bands but I accept what they did. If your theory would be correct, then every band without much solo has no quality. thats rubbish. The Beatles were not famous for their solos, and they are the greatest band of the 20th century.

  • But you guys dont get what im trying to say. they are famous yes i no, but not for their abillity to play, just for what they stood for. I think that its stupid for people to relate to lyrics all the time it turns you into a tool. Why d you think people like hendrix really, its because he was high and trippin ohh la la.

  • i have to admit i first heard this from nirvana...ever since that this version seems way too fast for me...

  • @pmasta333 - bullshit- shut your mouth!! Their are many famous guitarists like Dylan, Lennon, Cash who never played a freaking solo. Cobain was no Steve Vay or Van Halen and I have never heard that grunge music is renowned for their virtuosic guitar solos. Nirvana is one of the greatest bands of the 90th. Meat puppets later said it was an honor for them to play a show with him. Kurt Cobain was a typical and very talented singer and songwriter, not a virtuoso guitarist.

  • damn man dont get so mad just because your musical taste is primitive. and you spelled Stee Vai wrong. any good musician wouldnt play in a band that only plays powerchords and no solos. they join blues, jazz classic rock you no actual genres not just scenes and cand wearing cool flannels

  • musical taste pmasta? You sound like a fasion critic or some faggotry like that. FYI you spelled Steve Vai wrong too. Its amazing how every other douche who thinks he can play a nice little riff always says how jazz and blues are "real" music, almost instantly discrediting good bands of other, newer genres.

In case you weren't aware the general public flocks to certain types of music because of the emotional response, not how intricate their solos are and some bands prefer to give that to them.

  • Yea but every song That johnyy cash or Dylan played was a 145 or an actual chord progression. Most of nirvanas music isnt in a legitimate key its just random chords. And people like the emotion it gives off because they are whiny, low self esteemed, and have ugly wives like Kurt

  • I no, and thats why your ignorant. Cz you listen to music because of their message and brainwashing or their fashion sense and not their skill. People who learn to play well and use their brain a little deserve credit. beethoven and Bach were famous for good reasons. Newer rock genres r famous for the same reasons as rappers, its all about the scene and there low esteemed messages that everyone can relate too.

  • Ignorant? I see u like to assume every person who listens to something mildly Pop-like must bathe in the culture of a single genre to cult status. You know nothing about my musical taste and I couldn't give a shit about what artists I like wear or their message. I listen to music with my ears, not my eyes. U mention Beethoven, whos Moonlight Sonata I can play nearly 100% on piano by memory. Everything from classical to electronic is worthy to me. Don't assume, because it makes an ass out of you.

  • @Psopyxsus

Damn man i will only keep responding with more shit just give up i out alpha'd you and you no it. Responding back makes you look like way more of a pussy just accept it. And Moonlight Sonata its in C# minor thats a mad easy scale on piano.

  • @Psopyxsus

And i only judged you cuz you judged me. I love the meat puppet and tons of other regular rock bands. I just really think Kurt Cobain was not all people crack him up to be. He was just that kid in High school who slacked and walked around with a guitar sucking at it, and getting no chicks, and complaining about how its so fucked up. And had no balls to take care of his family or responsibilities

  • u put up the wrong album cover. u have the cover for Meat Puppets II up which is what Lake Of Fire was originally on but u posted the version off Too High To Die. i like both Meat Puppets versions much better than the Nirvana cover

  • exactly, most people here dont realise this is the alternative version of the song

  • i totally agree with "idonthaverecon"

  • This isnt the album version. well, i dont have this album, but on the greatest hits album, this song is alot different. Curt sings it like hes drunk on the greatest hits cd.

  • i much prefer the MP version. every time i hear anything Nirvana I wanna shoot myself in the head

  • lol ? why

  • lol. guess i'm just an old 80's metal guy. i can't stand grunge. i really don't have anything bad to say about them, but i do have to turn the station whenever they come on.

  • ok:D

i really like this verison too but i think nirvana's is a litte bit cooler to me.=D

  • @swamprocker and i would consider nirvana more of a alternative punk band, they had the grunge image but their music wasn't grunge

  • @swamprocker I am a big big Nirvana fan, and i love 80's metal too, and I can see why you wouldn't like grunge, because Nirvana obviously did take over the spotlight and killed 80's metal, and then "grunge" was forced down everyones throats. I don't like the grunge everyone fell for, the real "grunge" is the ones that aren't played everywhere, because if you compared bands like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, and Creed to bands like Mudhoney, Screaming Trees and Melvins you'd see what grunge is.

  • i like the nirvana version better, it seems like it has more emotion.

  • @idonthaverecon well to be fair the meat puppets did the guitars on the nirvana one

  • can everybody just like the both versions???

  • fuck they are both really good bands, I must say I did like the laid back acoustic version off of the unplugged album tho.

  • i love nirvarna but this band are close to beating them in my OPINION oh stoox006 could u tell me who did the original it would be nice to know

  • the original, which i prefer, was made by meat puppets (album: meat puppets II) and the one kurt cobain did sounds a lot more like that version. this is just an alternative version meat puppets did of their own song.

  • i dont think a lot of nirvana fans are aware of the fact that this is not the original version of this song made by meat puppets. hence half of the discussions here are pointless...

  • I have alwayes loved Nirvana, but meat puppets are simply better quality musicians. I guess Nirv. was never really about being "good musicians" as such.

  • I disagree, heres why I think so.

Kurt Cobain was influenced by punk rock, sloppy playing but they play with feeling and passion. That's how Kurt played...and also..he sang and played guitar aswell...Give the guy some credit, lol.

  • @tubbythug92

why would you try to get good at something and purposely play sloppy. And there are tons of musicians who sing and play so thats no excuse. He just had poor picking technique

  • @deniceinspain

no nirvana just sucked meat puppets are awesome

  • the original is much better than the cobain version, and much more fun!

  • this isn't the one on Meat Puppets II

  • faaaast ,but meaty and tasty

  • I love the Nirvana version better, it's completely different to this!

  • Me to. I like how its only one voice instead of a melody. Kurt Cobain's voice sounds better than these two comboined.

  • go away

  • fuck u dude meat puppets arer btter i ,lik nirvana thoyugh too

  • Thank you (Nirvanadude) for pointing out meat puppets is better

  • well they are betta thts all im sayin u can like nirvana more but thts my 2 cents on the subject

  • Its only my opinion.

  • i like nirvana version better

  • @natz428

Me to, i dont know why, the nirvana cover of it sound like its more feeling, this feels.. rushed almost

  • @kiddi1000

man, i love this as much, kurt has a different style, but listen this a lot, and you'll see

  • @kiddi1000

why is everyone such girls rock was meant to be fast and its not like its 200bps with a blast beat

  • @pmasta333

    That is called metal.

    this is called soft rock...

We all dont like the screemo shit- so we listen to the good stuff like this.

I listen to fast and heavy stuff aswell- i also listen to folk music.

  • @kiddi1000

lol i would never listen to screamo if you had a knife t my throat

  • @kiddi1000

i was just trying to say it could be way faster its not that fast and as a guy why wouldnt you want it to be awesome and fast

  • I don't think Nirvana ever covered it. The unplugged version was a meat puppets version with Kurt singing.

  • yeah, maybe you're right ...

  • Fucking love that chorus

  • I think its kind of funny that the background video for this song is the Meat Puppets II album. This version of Lake of Fire was recorded in 1994 off the Too High To Die album, as a hidden track.

  • The version on Meat Puppets II was better.

  • god dammit, this song kicks so much ass it hurts. everyone do themselves a favor, got o the meat puppets site and download Rare Meat, its a refreshing break from the bull shit music of today

  • I love the meat Puppets and Nirvana equally. Although Nirvana's unplugged is a bit different it is really just the meat puppets with kurt singing. thats the only real difference othe than tempo and such. Kurt was really the guest on that track, not the kirkwoods

  • cant we just enjoy the differences between Cris Kirkwood and Kurt cobain?

  • @thecookeyfiend

what differences? the fact that one of them sucked and one was a fairly decent musician

  • @pmasta333 i hope your kidding, because both had great success. and remember that music is different from one ear to the next so respect the differences man, we dont need a big arguement over good music do we?

  • music is not different from one ear to the next its a specific set of vibrations per second

  • @thecookeyfiend

lol i guess your right cuz i used to listen to these songs like omg wow they are gods and nowadays im like yea this song is w/e

  • @pmasta333 - please stop it, the number of chords says nothing about the quality of the songs. the best rock and pop songs habe only a few chords. make an effort ands listen to nirvana songs and you see kurt uses many different chords.

  • @plerimest dude how are you gonna even say that. I am saying nirvana has too many chords. most chord proggressions are like 3 chords for the whole song. Obviously you dont know what you are talking about.

  • @pmasta333 - you are such an musical idiot. You know nothing about rock music. you wanna talk about powerchords. Rock is about powerchords, you little cunt! 3 chords, yeah ever heard about AC/DC, Elvis, Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Status Quo, CCR, Hendrix, Green Day, they never used more than 3 chords in 90 % of their songs. I am not wasting my time with you anymore.

  • Oh dear,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • @plerimest many different powerchords genius, get it right

  • hm, i prefer the voice of kurt cobain over that of cris kirkwood, but its good. Great musicians!!

  • not an issue of better or worse. Matter of taste. Both respected musicians.

  • Meat puppets are just better musicians.

  • ouch!

  • Video2mp3 and keepvid are also very good

  • all the buzz is about that mp4ify site. where can i find it? extracts audio and video from any youtube vid to mp3 or mp4 files?

  • aw man this is good!

  • this isn't the cd version of lake of fire...the original one is 1:57 minute long and it is way better than this crappy version and also is better than nirvana's version....which is good, but not as good as the original Meat Puppets II version...

  • i like nirvana's cover a lot better

  • @skateordie72420 shut up faggot.

  • i hate it also how everyone worshipps Kurt, yeh... he is really cool and i like him lots but it was NIrvanas version... not just Kurts, the meatpuppets were also there In mtv unplugged. wow

  • I am by no means of a Nirvana fan. However I had heard the Nirvana version first so I like it more than this one.

  • tempe-rockers in da house...

  • this is a more upbeat i think like the drums and that its faster but kurts made it more deppresing i think more mellow i think they are both great but i still perfer kurts

  • oh yea, cobain puts so much more soul into this song

  • ya but it wasn't his song. Kurt Cobain would be angry at anyone who says that his version is better. He was doing a tribute

  • nay, i know what your trying to say but he wouldnt be angry becasue its an opinion... he wouldnt have been angry at someone for there opinion

  • i really love the grooves in this song, it vibes along in a really smooth, sleek way, golly gosh its great

  • This is not the Meat pupppets album version, so what is this? Oo

  • Hidden track at the end of Too High to Die.

  • @phoney1313 yeah, was it not listed due to copyright problems..different record labels?

  • I think this is an extremely well written song, however, in comparison, the nirvana cover is soooooo much more emotional as far as vocals go. However, u cant belittle the meat puppets because they wrote it.

  • Not trying to be an ignorant Nirvana fanboy, but i do prefer the unplugged version. though meat puppets are actualy very good

  • Im a Nirvana fan and I really like both versions of the song

  • I actually prefer the Meat Puppets version and as much as I love Nirvana, I dont think Cobain's is more emotional. Anyway, the Puppet bros were playing Unplugged with Nirvana anyway so it was both!

  • You Nirvana fans will learn to love this when you get older.

  • @cheddartriscuit

    word you tell em

  • dude....this is totally chill out music.....you know? Highway 1, pickup truck, a good old pipe in your mouth and you crank up the volume to this song.....duuuude!

  • Right on, dude!

  • It's shivering me with rhythm.

  • PUPPETS PERIOD! Thank you...

  • meet my shit

  • i am a nirvana fan and i like this version the best. dont assume all nirvana fans think this sucks because this song and band kicks ass

  • ya dude, i personally think the nirvana covers were good, but the meat puppets sounded better

  • reading the comments on Meat Puppets songs has made me realize that even though I love Nirvana I absolutely HATE Nirvana fans

  • @OriginalRubberJesus I agree. I hate the "fans" who are just fanboy idiots. They do not appreciate anything other then Nirvana. It is sad.

  • nicely said

  • Anal sex.

  • i agree with you

you cant just love one band and if they make a cover or something go "o my god they re so much better!!" its just stupid

  • @DeadKennedysNirvana8 lol no one honestly likes this version more, if nirvana came out with this song first ppl like cheddar and deadkennedy saying this is better would prefer nirvanas. its all about the original with some ppl and thats just sad

  • you are extremely ignorant. Pretty sure you have no musical taste with asinine comments like yours.

  • @OriginalRubberJesus

lol yea they need to stfu about them its not even their song

  • luv this song luv the meat puppets class

  • okay, it get's a bit annoying, on every single song nirvana did a cover i read the same comments over and over again-yeah, kurt did it far lot more better. rip kurt cobain etc... okay, yeah we all love nirvana and most of us would never heard of some amazing bands like the vaselines or bad brains or meat puppets if nirvana didn't promote them as much as they did... so guys please chill out a bit!

    cheers!

  • so you're not the only one that thinks too many people *worship* kurt cobain? but dont get me wrong. i fucking love nirvana. but i find it very annoying too.

  • well then, the same here

  • Okay, allow me to settle this once an for all. The Meat Puppets are great songwriters. To say "this version sucks because Kurt sang it better" is like saying Bob Dylan's version of "All Along the Watchtower" sucks because Hendrix played better guitar. Kurt did to this song what Hendrix did to Dylan's. Therefore, to say the original sucks holds no bearing whatsoever, because it came first and was going for the songwriting view. Both versions are fucking great but I prefer the Unplugged one.

  • There is no nirvana version,it ist just Kurt with the Meat Puppets

  • @Duffman42323

Dave Grohl plays drums on that one, though. I like the Unplugged performance better because I think the Cobain/Kirkwood match-up works phenominally, but this original meat puppets version also kicks much ass. Keep the good music alive, bro.

  • A classic; one of my favourite songs. Thanks!

  • you're a moron, Nirvana didn't "do" this song, Nirvana did a concert with the Meat Puppets, these guys were the same guys you heard playing in that "Nirvana song"

  • Nirvana version is way better. In this version it sounds like they don't want to sing and they just want to get the song over with.

  • yeah it's too fast or somethin.

  • this live is way better

  • Kurt singing is infinite times better to me ^^

    Nirvana Forever .

  • i think kurt put a little bit more soul and feeling in the song when he sang it

  • fuck you!!

  • The Puppets are really good, and so is Nirvana, but original is always better in my opinion.

  • Huh? By virtue that it is original?

  • Well, that's one, but also, if the Meat Puppets would have never written it, then Nirvana would have never played it, hmm?

  • i like this version

  • AWESOME TUNE BY CURT KIRKWOOD !!!

  • Lol the guy from meat puppets sounds WAY WAY worse than this

  • this dsnt sound lyk their original i agree. the meat puppets did it differently than this n it sounded waay bttr idk which version this is

  • As many have said already, Nirvana does it a lot better. Still good though!

  • kurt added more emotion.

  • This isn't the original version, right? 'Cause I have Meat Puppets II, and it doesn't sound like this one...

  • nirvana dose it a lot better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • They couldn't have bettered the solo if they tried though.

  • i disagree, i love nirvana. but this version is better to my standards.

  • nirvana did everything better :) Kurt was a god !!

  • i hav 2 agree, i prefer nirvana's version, but the song wouldnt even exist without the meat puppets

  • LIke Kurt singing this songbetter but still cool yo.

  • i have to thank kurt because without the unplugged album i may not know about great bands like the meat puppets or the vaselines.

  • why are you talking about kurt when this song was covered by him
