we have a singer called Muhammad Sharif ragi in faisalabad pakistan. he is originally from ludhiana...he is out of this world.......last of his kind on this side of punjab
@gujratijatt let me correct myself he is from Jullunder(excuse me for my spelling)... his ustad muhammad saddique was born around 1902 or so in a village called Vargurupar in Phagwara... the main ustad was mehardin shamsabadia who according to me must have been there atleast over a 150 years back or so.....
That is a very smart question! The answer is: no, not really. Of course, there are several "schools" of "classical" music (equivalent to Carnatic) in the Punjab area, but if we are speaking of purely local, "folk" music, then no. There are instrumental melodies on the flute + snake-charmer's pipe-- that is about it. Also sometimes, rarely, people play an instrumental piece on folk instruments but that is mainly artificial + derivative of the accompaniment that they'd normally play with a text.
very good bai ji!

Fantastic performance. I think one of the artists may be Mohd. Sadiq Sharif. Gives me chills listening to their rendition of Hir.

Thanks.
The tumba player uses his instrument as a drum and as a string instrument.
