Albert Goldman is an intellectual, which is the word for a man who has never made anything but feels qualified to insult the creativity of others.
Spector's productions were perfect for teenagers to listen to on portable transistor radios. They were never intended for intellectuals to listen to on modern audiophile systems.
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is the most played single of all time. Nobody even remembers Goldman existed, except for this critique of Spector.
@Atomicflash500 That's not true. In Ronnie's memoir she states that all three of them biracial, or "half-breeds" as she put it. Ronnie and Estelle are White on their father's side, and Black & Native American on their mother's side. And their cousin Nedra is Black and Puerto Rican.
@Atomicflash500 I've met Ronnie on more than one occasion, and I've always heard her say and write she and Estelle are Black, Native American and White. Nedra is the Afro-Hispanic.
that fucking jealous jew dissing Phil's records...he's probably angry about the fact Phil made all the money off of the "schlock" he produced while that stuffy jew piece of shit got nothing for them
@misscleo3861 no i thought he was a devout catholic. of course i know he is a jew, a jew who loves christmas. i wasn't insulting all jews, just the one who used the word "schlock" to describe Spector's work. get a grip, loser
@wayydowneast Spector was a Jew as well. Goldman's ethnicity has nothing to do with it. Some Jews are pigs, some are princes, just like every other ethnic group. Fact is, Spector exploited a lot of his artists whose talents made him bundles of money that he should have shared with them. This doesn't negate his talents as a writer or producer, but it is part of the historical record. Just like his horrible treatment of Ronnie Bennett, who he nearly destroyed. For that, I'll never forgive him.
Goldman has that Paul Lynde clever viciousness that he buffers with a "wall of words", but he is interesting. His work would be more insightful if he was coming from love and not negativity. His takes in Life Mag. the aftermath of Jimi Hendrix's death and that of Janis Joplin were weak, and his analysis looks even worse in retrospect. He needs to be taken to task and hammered for his analysis, but back away from the vitriolic and personal comments. It's unecessary and you'll live longer.
Karen111111111/dsussman: yeah, you've got it! Goldman is the epitome of the saying "those who can do it do it -- those who can't, become critics." He may be resting in peace, but I'm not sure he deserves it.
Al Goldman actually put a lot of research and scholarship into several personality bios. Read his bio of Lenny Bruce, then read his bio of Elvis. His writing style is hip and slanderous, but also thoughtful and revealing. He died about ten years ago.

The ramones talking about someone else being over the hill? Talking about Phil Spector stifling creativity? LOL.These guys couldn't even spell the word creative and were essentially worthless. No credibility at all.
The Ramones would have fared better if they never got that modern sound, with their shitty drum machine 80's albums that followed end of the century. I don't think spector did a very good job, besides Danny Says which is an AMAZING PRODUCTION
But most of the stuff was really poorly written. Ellie Greenwich used the phrase "hold you tight" in about half the songs she wrote. Not very inspired songwriting there.
Joey really transformed after working with Phil Spector. Like if you listen to his singing in any album before "end of the century" and compare it ot any album after it, he had a lot more versatility. Joey liked Phil and he enjoyed working with him and of course, he was one of Joey's heroes, so obviously he's pretty pissed off at what Johnny and Dee Dee were saying. I'm a big Ramones fan, but I don't think Johnny was right in saying what he did.
Some of Goldman's comments have a grain of truth. The majority of the Spector songs, although masterfully produced, were poorly written bubblegum tunes. Just listen to the lyrics to stuff like "A Fine Fine Boy" and "Da Doo Ron Ron", and you'll see and hear what I mean.
Goldman's "writing" exposed the fragility of his own psyche more than that of his supposed subjects. Opportunistic piece of shit; his "inside information" consisted of lies and speculation.
If he was actually "laid to rest", hope I get a chance to piss on his grave.

Greetings to GF ma-kuso:
C'mon, mang, try to lay dead (expunge propoganda-based opinions) and go-ahead (begin anew with a refreshened outlook as regards the metaphysical objectivity of each situation). As far as Pelveeta (Elvis The Pelvis/smooth as light cheese) is concerned, he was a wreck as Goldman detailed.
Flee from revisionist hx, even when it pertains to someone as important as Pelveeta; despite Goldman, Pel is doing quite well posthumously. So, lay dead and go-ahead.
I agree with everything you said in your last post. If Goldman did anything it was to shine a different light on some very public figures who were/are often perceived by many in fairly one-dimensional way (Elvis: King of R'nR, Lennon: Mr. Peace & Love). However, I do question the validity of Goldman's research and the objectivity of his writing due to the intense dislike he seemed to have for his subjects, and the scant "evidence" he used for some of his hypotheses.
Fair enough, ma-kuso. You might want to re-visit the book: "Elvis, What Happened" by the Guys. Also, Goldman did depict the Colonel as the source of Elvis's worst problems so that the concept of "intense dislike" might not be an accurate one. It seems that most of the arguments against Goldman have been postulated since his own death which strikes one as rather pointless.
Never thought I'd be defending Phil Spector, 'til I heard Adolf Goldman's pseudo-intellectual twaddle. Twaddle! OH NO IT'S RUBBING OFF!
On a positive note, hearing Ronnie sing that little snippet of the Frankie Lymon song left me hungering for more! I'd love to hear sing the whole thing!
Albert Goldman-what a piece of work! "This great hole; this declivity..." That's YOU Goldman! Listen to him gas on about music like the pseudo-intellectual twat that he was. And "schlock"? Just listen to him talk, or God help you, read any of his books and you'll know the meaning of the word as well as any Jewish person. Speaking of which, for that hatchet-piece he wrote on Elvis, I hope he's spending his eternity in Hell watching the '68 Comeback Special over and over and over again.
haha, do you actually believe the things you say?
i bet you listen to shit music!
RAMONES HIGLY OVER RATED CRAPPY BAND? I say you are the idiot here mate, if anything, Ramones were underrated, atleast in the USA, and they friggin' saved Rock'n'Roll, although in 2009 music again is complete shit.
I'm really glad that I'm not alone in hating Albert "poorest excuse for a music writer that has ever existed" Goldman.
I first got to know the fucker when in a book fair I saw his book about Lennon really cheap and I thought I'd made the best buy ever. Oh, how wrong was I. It was so bad that I felt the need to ceremonially burn it in a fireplace and I'm all for free speech, but not for stupidity or polemic for the sake of it.
He fortunately died of cancer. I can only hope he suffered.
/agree with ferstday about the guy at the end of the clip (goldman) how he can call those albums terrible is beyond me. they were ahead of their time.
/disagree with ferstday about why spector was a somebody. its like micheal jackson, they are both genius's but they don't know how to act in the real world. you would probably agree with me in saying MJ is messed up, but he was once the king of pop. it's like phil spector how he was once a musical genius, and then his life unraveled.
Spector may be and have been a personal beast, but he had several unique takes on pop music which have indelibly stamped US pop music: not just the Wall of Sound, but also the Zen classicism of The Teddy Bears, the lusnhess of The Paris Sisters, and the density of the Wall as he moved it to the Beatles. Many flawed humans have created great art. His sonic creations have, to my ears, stood the test of time very well; it's sad that his life is such a train wreck and has wrecked others as well.
I mean, this was filmed more than 2 decades ago, and to this day, alive or dead, he is so effectively REPELLENT in EVERY way I can possibly imagine.
The "energy" or "vibe" (or whatever) that he emanates is absolutely caustic and corrosive- sort of like in 'The Shining', but instead lets call it 'the sucking'.
I don't know (yet) why he was once a somebody; I just know that HE REALLY SUCKED.
How disappointed I'd be in myself in the afterlife if I were to leave behind a permanent record such as this of myself behaving like that the guy talking at the end of this clip, especially at that age.
