"free world" my ass. "You must login to do that. If you are trying to download Code Hero, you must first buy the game and create an account to sign in with."
normally I would go for something opensource such as idTech4 or just write something from scratch, although since unreal engine and cry engine both seem to be available for free download for non-commercial use now they're both pretty tempting.
Ultimately it's going to come down to what I'm trying to make and how much I can put up with doing something someone else's way to save work, but since unity's graphics aren't particularly wowing or anything the cost/gain doesn't really seem that great.
@DjChronokun There are 10 kinds of game developers: those who can code their own engine binary like yourself, and those who are teaching beginners like we are. I envy your prowess and I have friends who also prefer to do it all in C++, but Unity makes game development possible for 6.99999 billion more people than ever before, and we need all kinds of game developers to make games that have ambitious and creative concepts to educate and transform the world.
@primerlabs I don't really have much in the way of prowess, I'm still just learning myself, I just think it would be nicer if for the sake of teaching in an unbiased way they used something that wasn't tied to commercial middleware(and ideally not tied to a particular language but that's probably too much to ask).
