Who ever filmed and directed the battle sequences in the series did a better job than Saving Private Ryan and Band of brothers. It's the small things you notice, for example the tiger when it fires recoils, damage to other tanks was more realistic. These were some of the details lacking from B of B and SPR,maybe Speilburg will consult these people next time.Shame the tiger is still a replica though, the road wheels do not overlap.
Germans at 1944 were totally exhausted due to fierce and long battle with soviets. If the british and americans had opened the western front 2 years earlier the battle might have ended earlier saving so many lives. And hiroshima and nagasakhi might not have occured
@itichi101185 There had always been a Western Front 1940-5 The British fought in the Atlantic, and in the Air (After been defeated in Europe and fall of France)Also the British Forces in N.Africa 1941-3 who defeated Rommel and the Axis 1942, Al Alamein(Turning point in the Western Front). The British and Americans invaded Italy 1943, Whitch was vital to the Soviets. But D-Day was about stopping the spread of the Russains, The Allies had known the Nazis were crushed 1943. Russia was a big THREAT
@martynrobin121 that is what i am saying that british and americans new the germans are going to be defeated after they surrendered in stalingrad. still they delayed the opening of second front. did it take them so long to realise the THREAT from soviets? they had made plans for opening second front from1941 and it take them 4 years to implement their plans. causing the people in europe to suffer from HOLOCAUST.
@itichi101185 The Allies wernt prepared to open a Western Front in Europe,The U.S didnt arrive till 1942 and didnt see first action till 1943!(They would have been humiliated). Churchill decided to invade Italy 1943 "The under Belly of Europe" also it would force the Nazis to send troops, resources, tanks that were needed on the Eastern Front, Kursk whitch decided the war, Also Italy would be out of the war! By 1944 the Allies and Soviets were enemies, Both plotting against each other.
@TheShart1234 This was a joint project between the BBC and the History Channel, so apparently they both brought their own narrators for their own country's audience...
I believe that the majority of the US campaign in Europe was composed of volunteers after pearl harbor.
The more well trained divisions and Marines fought in the pacific against the japs, that's where the majority of US forces were because the japs attacked them. People seem to forget that that was the US main enemy during the war, and they pretty much single handedly beat them.
@Theplaymaker127 So going by your post the Anzacs (Austalia , New Zealand army cor's)didn't fight against the japs. Well I think my Grandfather would beg to differ.
The US Army in 1939 only had about 160,000 troops and a really small military budget. We had virtually no tanks or combat aircraft. By 1943 we had over 10 million man Army, with little training. Germans had a highly professional, well trained Army going into war. Us poor allies had to draft men and learn on the job against the finest Army in the world. Allies paid a very high cost in blood to learn what the Wehrmacht already knew. Sadly many mothers lost their sons to the Germans.
@SoldatenArvidsjaur23 Of course we had higher casualties at the beginning of the invasion. American casualties throughout the war are surprisingly small relative the German and Japanese (just talking about our side vs. I know they were fighting on more than one front)
Well 86% of German WW2 losses were on the Eastern Front that's why US losses look so small.
Furthermore I can't see the point in clicking thumbs down on my list of KIA in Normandie. Truths always seem inconvenient to the USA when they don't favour them. I guess that's why Spielberg had to make a stupid final battle in SPR where 20 guys knock out 5% of the German Tiger Tanks deployed in Normandie in 20 minutes (at a time when no Tigers were in Normandie at all) to even out the losses.
Read the accounts of what the USA and Brit Airborne did on D-Day. In one instance 20 USA Paras took out an entire German Inf. Co., and there are many examples of ad hoc groups of scattered paras doing incredible things. 2 understrength US Paras induced an 800 man German Para Bn of von der Heydte's 6th Para Regt to surrender by ambushing it in an open flooded area. The German Paras thought they were facing many enemies and ~600 surrendered, & only ~20 - 30 made it back to German lines.
I personally think easy comapny is overated it was just average life in an allied rifle company but they got the book and mini series based on them so there better than the SS, Marine Commandos, ANZACs and chindits compined!
Overated is the wrong word, perhaps overexposed...They were no better or worse than most other soldiers, but they stood their ground during The Battle of the Bulge while many other allied units were running in the other direction..
I think 6 SS divisions fought in Normandy 5 faced the British and Canadians (12th, 1st, 2nd, 9th and 10th) and one against the Americans (17th) this shows how good in the long term Montys strategy was
he knew that he couldn't break out. His so called 'breakout' claim was to convince Bomber Command to switch its raids from Germany to Normandy which they did...

Easy Company were incredible combat troops, the like of which had never been seen before. They were superbly led by giants like Dick Winter, and mentored by the finest military minds available in World War 2. Rommel knew the game was up as soon as Easy Company arrived. He commited suicide with most other German leaders rather than face Winters.
Rommel would have given beating to the Easy Company. He was just forced to commited suicide because he ot some relations to the ones of the 20th July 1944.
Easy company 506th was just another Airborne Company, infact an Airborne company by itself is was only around 113 men; not enough to win the war on their own. Infact there were more experinced US Army Airborne Companies in Normandy on D- Day. Such as companies from the 505th PIR, 82nd Airborne who had fought in Sicily and Italy before D-Day; unlike the entire 101st which was a combat virgin like most US Divisions landing in the first wave. (exception of the 1st Infantry Division)
@Frikkz1 The 101st at Bastonge was not unique in history; there are other times that similar outcomes have occurred in similar settings. And I have to say that there was more than a company; an entire Division that would have been wiped out(despite the popular opinion) if Patton had not rescued them. I am not meaning to diminish the sacrifices and contributions of Easy Company 506th PIR just remind people that there were others that fought harder and longer and sacrificed more to win the war.
I said I wasn't. It says here "the SS were very different to those the allies faced on the beach". What is truer to say is "the SS had never faced such super troops as Easy Company". The SS ran in panic.
yeah now i know ur taking the piss! There were no SS in the cotentin anyway so no SS for Easy, sorry, they had to deal with some Ostruppen and the occassional para. Was best leave the SS to the Commonwealth for the time! Youre a funny guy though, kudos!
super troops?, your statement is over simplifed. Alot of what happened with the 17thSS Panzergrenadier Division is because it was a brandnew division and not at full strength, Plus the 101 had alot more reserves. such as the US 2nd Armoured Division.
Do you have any idea how fricken famous Micheal Vittman is? one of the best Tank ace's in the war, its no wonder the tommies got their arse's kicked, that man knows everything about tank warfare and had been fighting in that war since it began. and no, it was not just ONE tank, he commands about 4 Tigers too.
TIger tank was one of the most heavily armored and armed panzers to hit the field during WW2. a total 70 tons of roaving armor and a devastating 88mm cannon it could rip Shermans and Cromwells to pieces. Its little wonder they were stopped. one story i heard a Tiger tank took 78 direct hits before the crew had to leave because it ran out of fuel =O!!
German tanks of the time were the strongest, especially in defensive possitions where their slower speed didn't matter. For example the Sherman coudn't penetrate the Tiger frontally at almost any range!

KIA in the two months of the Normandy Campaign:
21 000 US KIA
17 000 Brittish KIA
6 000? Canadian KIA
2 000? Polish KIA
6 000 Air Crew KIA
This was opposed to only 23 000 German KIA.
