Here is the video with the man using Sacks for a cot and pillow. Thought you might find it interesting. 'bushcraft survival long term wilderness shelter patr 4 of 7 making a raised cot'.
I saw a man in Europe using Sacks that he carried with him. He ended up having a makeshift cot, and a pillow filled with leaves. The 3 sacks didn't weight much and were great for getting one's body off the ground. Have you seen this video or have any experience with sacks? Oh,,and loved the video Dave. I'm getting ready to prompt all of my facebook 'Friends' to Subscribe to your channel. Don't know why I haven't so far. Love all that you do, Brother. Thank you for everything. God bless!
Raised with goats as. Kid and used them with a cart and sled. A goat raised with your kids will adopt them. They will defend them and against a dog they can do a pretty good job. If you start leading them young it don't take long and you don't need a lead rope. Forget cows! Survival goats are it!
@mrbippy I was wondering the same thing. Seems like a female goat would meet the requirement of having multiple uses for everything that you take. Heck, she might even eventually attract a male goat to your location and double the MREs!
@mrbippy Goat milk is good for the stomach . I have ulcers and goat milk really helps with that and acid reflux .( this info has been handed down for generations in my family )
Great Dave! now how to I start that conversation with my wife? You know honey.........I was thinking we should get a goat. I may need to buy a yurt too just so I have something to live in. :)
Just want to reiterate what a great series these videos are! I'm really enjoying them. Check out the channel "goathiker" here on YouTube. It's got some good info in raising pack goats.

I love how after you tell the goat that he is a possible menu option and not necessarily a pet, he gives you "the look" and then shakes his head like "aw heck no" and walkes out of the lense view. lol
Since I have a service dog she carries some of my stuff when I go hiking. Not much just an extra liter of water, and usually beef jerky or a snack of some kind. She also carries a small 4x4 tarp for herself and a light fleece blanket and about a 4lbs bag of her own food. I carry her water dish with me just because her pack is too small. I have seen many large breed dogs as well pull carts with items in them. But as you said they can only carry about 1/4 their weight. Just nice to have a friend.
You might put a couple of road flares in the goats pack. Those can be used to signal, start fire and will burn long and hot enough to dry out wet wood.
Thats a really cool idea, I only own a fainting goat but i guess it would be a bad idea to practice with him, Probably cough loud or somthing and the poor old thing would faint and roll down the side of a mountain with all my stuff.
Dave I would really like to see a scenario on SAN where a couple guys with little self reliance experience get lost hiking and have atleast the 10 C's on hand. or an averages backpackers contents. that would be interesting to those of us that haven't yet taken one of your courses.

an old car tire with supported and nailed to the top of your chopping block.. allows all the wood to stand tall and still (if you load up the tire) and it chops just as easily without flying off... less bending, more chopping... the less you have to touch a pice of wood the better :) though your camp won't look as 'rustic' and 'woodsy' it's how do you put it.. functionable not fasionable and not unreasonalbe to find an old tire in a 'grid down' nomadic survival situation
Mr. C (reminds me of Happy Days....) you 'TV' is way better though.... just spent the last 2 days catching up on all the Yurt videos... awesome... though most of these will be goat comments i'm sure, in the thought of sharing ideas to make nomad life easier... you spend a lot of time chopping wood... and most of that time is spent bending over and picking it up... i'll share a tip I learned to make it easier (if i can post again .. out of space...)

Dave Someday I am going to try and trap/catch a young male kid wild goat and raise him to be a pack goat for me. That would be so cool. Tanner is beautiful
@AJ14615 Everything is situationally dependant but you must remember to consider the 10 C's in some form and then you can vary to the environment, weather, or intention of the trek.
@AJ14615 Another reason,is that a Survival Kit isn't always set in stone. You're gonna find something that suits you a little more than something you used to have, or something that goes well with the items you already have. Don't limit yourself to just taking Dave's 10c's and then never touching your kit's setup again. Always search and experiment to find what best suits you. I like to pack 6-8 clothesline pins, so my wet socks don't end up in my fire.
what do you think about dogs that were bred for pulling like a Newfoundland or a Bernese Mountain Dog, i know they need special food, but they are better and easier to train and if it gets cold the can be a living radiator.
I have watched tis video several times and after you mention Tanner being an MRE and after the stare down he shudders and shakes his head kind of like I don't think so lol Tanner sure does have personality. During WW2 there were few strays wandering the streets because they were used for food. I guess when it boils down to survival you have to do what you have to do.
nice pack, but i dont know what i do if i didnt have my Camelback Motherload. I bought it when i was in Germany while in the Army. I can put anything and everything in it. I still use it for daily use today. Great stuff Dave.
This is by far the funniest video you have made. Do you think the goat understood what an MRE is ? Too funny begining to this video. Really enjoyed it. Keep them coming!
You can harness 2 or 3 goats together "dogsled" style and move a lot more equipment. Takes a bit of training but I've seen it done. Entire families move their camps this way.
I reviewed the video on the Dulth tarp. Yours is a 7x7, a prototype,I presume as small in size as possible to reduce weight of the tarp. I trust canvas to take a beating and resist UV. However, I had a 10 x12' 1000 denier custom tarp made to keep one dry in monsoon rains. It won't rot. It weighs 9#. Going with a 500 denier Cordura nylon would cut the weight in half and been a more sensible and still be very durable. A 10x10 in canvas would be good for the worst weather here in the states.
Fantastic. I've joked with my girlfriend about taking a donkey on a week long hiking trip, but alas, I am without ass ;). Maybe a goat would be a more realistic option.
I'd kinda like to see you actually load up the goat, then do a little traveling. Just enough to demonstrate the practical application of trying to get the goat to carry your stuff WHERE YOU WANT TO GO.
Dave, I've been noticing in many of these recent videos, you're not doing much in the way of "First Aid" anymore. It's seldom addressed. I know there has always been the idea the Duck tape and some form of cotton rag or bandana could cover most concerns and I know that you care a repair needle to sew yourself up if needed (Seen you do it, yuk.) but just wondering if you changed a part of your philosophy?

My father always used to say: If you want to learn how to curse, buy a goat. And if you buy a goat, also buy a rifle...
Is the goat female? Because of the possibillity to source milk from it and the (maybe) better manners.
I think a Yak would also be a good survival companion. Can carry more weight, but is less low profile and eats more.

Dave, maybe you can just set up a 24 hour Yurt webcam. I could watch these videos, 24/7. Great job.

Dave,
This is by far the funniest video you have made. Do you think the goat understood what an MRE is ? Too funny begining to this video. Really enjoyed it. Keep them coming!

dude make a big ass wagon and have like 4-5 goats pulling you around
kdwedge243 1 month ago
Do you have other goats than tanner dave? If so can you do a series with multiple goats harnessed moving more equipment? THAT would be the bomb.
TheSillydad 1 month ago
