by a lot more russian I mean she has spent more time in russia and probably thinks more like a russian person than nastia. she was born in leninsk kuznetsky
@soberanis100 Dasha was born in Russia and moved to Australia with her parents when she was 7. Nastia was also born in Russia and moved to the states when she was 4. Regardless of where they born, I think it's great that they both love both of their countries and appreciate being Russian and American/Australian. I don't know why people want to label them as one or the other.
@sqekcx I don't know about that. Dasha was born in Russia and moved to Australia when she was 6 or 7. Nastia was born in Russia and moved to the U.S. when she was a toddler. But she grew up speaking both English and Russian, as did Dasha. I don't see how that makes one more "Russian" than the other.
@calleigh31323 Well, not really. One of my best friends is named Olga and she is technically russian, but she doesn't speak the language at all, and we call her Ollie. I also know a Giuseppa who is Italian and speaks only about six words in Italian. So names aren't always an indication of language. But in this case, it does :)

@BeautyGodesses I'm just gonna point out that not all Russians speak Russian. That's like saying that just because someones parents are Chinese, that they know how to speak it. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just saying.
American... Nastia liukin... Shawn Johnson... That's about all I caught. Haha damn Russians talk fast.. Wait, now I understand why they're called russians. xD
@southpark711 yeah... my sister took russian for 6 years and is doing study abroad in St Petersburg, but half the time she can't understand what other people are saying because they talk too fast.Same with german. got a good laugh out of the joke though :)
@mynumberisyouwish you can just tell, she speaks with an accent, she made like 3 grammar mistakes in 1 sentence and just you can definitely tell she speaks it rarely and doesn't know it well.
@evethesensei11 Ow like that, that's actually kinda weird cause I thought she spoke Russian with her parents because of the fact her parents are that good speakers of English ^^
I don't speak russian but i though this was pretty cool... You could pick out words like america and champion and you could hear them sayong names like svetlana khorkina, ksenia semenova, anastasia liukin.
@NYCBlonde it's extremely common for Americans to know more than English. Most learn Spanish at an early age, and I learned German as my native tongue and can speak Polish as well. I think Americans should learn more complicated languages from an early age so it'd be easier to learn the less complicated ones =]
her full name is anastasia liukina. and she was born in moscow, russia. her parents go to usa when she was 2 years old. so, this is absolutely normal. just talking.
@Mimihops08 actually, that's the age when she and her family got their US citizenship, but she moved to America when she was around 1 or 2 years old....
@MRdavenport2010 What a vile thing to say. Coming to this country to pursue a better life for yourself is QUINTESSENTIALLY American. She was being interviewed by a Russian TV station, what was she supposed to do, pretend she forgot how to speak it? I wish *more* Americans spoke a language besides English! We are the melting pot, made of many ethnicities and cultures. Shame on you.
@NYCBlonde I agree with you. I am an American and speak only English, but I have always wanted to speak a second language. I think if they start us out younger and not in high school/ junior high we would be able to learn a second language much easier.
@lion9008 I have a few american friends and they also only speak english. I'm from Argentina, so my first language is spanish. But I've had english lessons since I was 4. :)
Actually, in the 2006 Visa Championships...she was having some trouble with her FX routine..and her father was a little nervous about it...in day 2 of competition she messed up one of her tumbling passes and then repeated the same tumbling pass twice!!! They had installed a microphone in Valery's shirt, and as soon as she finished her routine Valery rushed to her and started talking to her in full-speed Russian...hehe.
She also messed up on the final routine, beam, and while she was waiting for her final score to see if whether she was going to be national champion again or not, Carly Patterson's coach, Evgeny Marchenko, and Nastia's choreographer, Natalya Marakova, were speaking to her in Russian as well, so I guess she does speak it at home...and at the gym!!!
Nop but u can look for the videos on youtube just write Visa National Championships part 1....there are about 10 parts...so you're gonna have to look for the one where Nastia is doing her FX exercise...
@danielcnsilva She speaks both Russian and English. If she's like me (my parents are immigrants too) and a lot of other kids in the same kind of situation, she probably switches mid-sentence sometimes LOL
Well, I know it... But, she probably speaks only Russian when she is with her parents and others people of Russia. Mid sentences, in the case os Nastia... I don't believe it. What country does your parents come from?
They come from Taiwan. Maybe not mid-sentence (my head gets jumbled LOL), but almost certainly mid-conversation. A few sentences in Russian, then a few in English, then a few in Russian, etc.
But I bet anything she switches mid-sentence sometimes, especially when she doesn't know the word in Russian.
If she doesn't, then she'd be the first person in such a situation (parents from another culture and language) I know of that doesn't.
they are friendly to each other i mean Valeri n Anna with Svetlana, and also Liukins with Tatiana Gutsu, Alexey Nemov and so on. and Nastia actually is a very sociable person so she is very friendly either towards russian gymnasts)
Nastia said: "There's no secrets: u just gotta train well and HARD :D"
yup, her name in russian is ANASTASIA LIUKINA, not LiukiN =)
и все-таки ... Настья beats Маша anyday) простая наша девочка..
Thanks for the informative comment - I appreciate it. You happened to mention Tatiana Gutsu as well...do you know what she is up to lately? She is one of my all-time favorite gymnasts and I met her once in Indianapolis.
I think I read somewhere that Nastia chose 'Liukin' over 'Liukina'. I forget why-perhaps someone else here knows. I love to hear her speak in her native Russian! So rare.
@faeryquene Based on the way the reporters referred to her, it's quite possible her official Russian name (she has dual citizenship) is Anastasia Liukina. But in the US, since her dad's last name is Liukin, I guess hers has to be too.
@Dariagreat11 do you know her patronymic name? i'm too lazy to look up her father's name. also, as i'm sure you know, nastia is a nickname for anastasia.
She said There's no secrets U just need to train good and hard. I'm Russian and I can tell she said it with accent, not big but.... She should say: Секретов нет никаких, просто нужно тренироваться хорошо и сильно
And She SAID: СекретА нетУ никаких, просто нужно тренироваться хорошо и сЫльно))))
Nastia herself, will say she likes being Russian but is also proud of being American.
I didn't know it was scandalous to speak your mother tongue or go visit your birth country a few times a year.
How is Nastia any different than anybody else? Every person living in America is from a different part of the world (unless you are native to the land)... It's just that you have most likely forgotten your European ties.
Nastia was born in Russia and so it is natural for her to speak it
All you guys arguing about nationality don't really understand the olympics... It's about celebrating the power of sport. Nearly every country has athletes from, trained or born in other countrys.
I prefer to think of America and Canada as global countries. Meaning that no one nationality represents them.
I mean it's fine to watch the olympics and cheer for your home country, but I watch just because I love the sport.
I mean who didn't feel good about Usain Bolt breaking the record?
I agree on certain aspects because gymnastics is an extremely beautiful sport, but when you win, the eyes of everyone turn to see the country and the coaches because they have done something that took a gymnast to a glorious moment.
Ok, well then look at the fact that Nastia was born in Moscow, trained by her dad a former Soviet Union medallist, and then training under Romanian coach Bela Karolyi who trained Nadia Comaneci to perfect 10's in Montreal.
So in essence you have a Russian-Born gymnast, trained by her Soviet Union dad, under the coaching of a Romanian and yet she is American?
That's why I hate nationalism. Sport transcends country's because we are all part of the world. I hate nationalism.
i think its cool if you can speak russian. i mean, its a difficult language! my bff also immigrated out of russia, she was a bit younger then nastia was, but my bff speak very well russian! i think its really cool to speak that kinda language =)
The point I'm trying to make is that Nastia has lived her all her life, grew up her and I'm sure feels more American than anything else. Its ridiculous to say that she isn't American, just because she immigrated her when she was 2.
Nobody really knows how she feels about herself but her!!!!
And MY point is that...IT DOESN'T REALYY MATTER!!!!
She's a gymnast...regardless of what country she is representing...I don't care if she feels MORE American than Russian...just as long as it doesn't affect her gymnastics... :D
I think too when you consider all that the Liukin's are doing for the sport of gymanstics in this country. It's horrific to say their daughter "is unworthy to be on the team." They've had over 30 people on the national team from WOGA. At least two of the men, on today's announced national team trained there until college.
Nastia has been in the States all her life. And you know what more so than Nastia who only has a few years back. The Russians would love to have Valeri coaching there.
Nastia is an American citizen who has lived in America most of her life. Russians will tell you that her Russian isn't very good, actually. It's got an accent. Although it would get better if she lived in Russia.
Also I want to point out that Nastia's father and other former Soviet gymnasts and coaches have done a lot for American gymanstics. Carly Patterson, for example (American born girl  trained at their gym) There's another American "born" girl training at their gym.
Whoa. Why does it matter what her nationality is? Ethnically, she's Russian, but she has American citizenship, which makes her nationality American. Her parents are also Russian Americans because they've also gotten citizenship here. Either way she's a phenomenal gymnast, and no one can take that away.
And about how she speaks, she's said that sometimes she doesn't like talking to Russian reporters because she's scared she'll mess up when she speaks.
i agree i mean lots of gymnasts around the world imigrated ti different countrys take jana beiger for example, kim bui and oksana chusovitina they are all from different countrys and moved to the other nationalitys so i have no idea what so ever why other people are throwing it all on nastia when lots of gymnasts have done it :) :(
The only reason I posted this video was because I wanted to share the fact that she speaks Russian which I find really COOL to NASTIA'S FANS, regarless of whether or not she has an accent.
So if you can't post anything else but bad comments about her nationality or her accent I will just simply delete them...
And hosnestly I COULDN'T care any less if she feels more American than Russian or Russian than American, because that's really not the main point in GYMNASTICS. Yes, bringing honor to the nation you represent is important but not as important as doing it as a result of your hard work, determination and LOVE for the sport you do.
That's cool that she can talk to the russian reporter like that by herself and with no translator. Also, it was nice to see Svetlana Horkina acting gracious-she was always such a wannabe diva when she was competing saying she was going to be a model and I remember actually seeing her yelling at people, even her coaches! they are friendly to each other i mean Valeri n Anna with Svetlana, and also Liukins with Tatiana Gutsu, Alexey Nemov and so on. and Nastia actually is a very sociable person so she is very friendly either towards russian gymnasts)
Nastia said: "There's no secrets: u just gotta train well and HARD :D"
yup, her name in russian is ANASTASIA LIUKINA, not LiukiN =)
и все-таки ... Настья beats Маша anyday) простая наша девочка..
liebemetze 2 years ago 3
Thanks for the informative comment - I appreciate it. You happened to mention Tatiana Gutsu as well...do you know what she is up to lately? She is one of my all-time favorite gymnasts and I met her once in Indianapolis.
pappysprite 2 years ago 2
u are always welcome :)
yup, mentioned) no, i don't know.. anything about her (((((
liebemetze 2 years ago
If her name is LiukinA, why we always see it as Liukin?
danielcnsilva 2 years ago
coz that's "the tradition" in the US) to write women's surnames like this) for example.. LiukinA=Liukin.. Golovina=Golovin.
they are simply written in this way in the states) or in english-speaking countries..
liebemetze 2 years ago
You are right! I remember Tatian Gutsu's name used to be posted as Goutsu.
pappysprite 2 years ago
I think I read somewhere that Nastia chose 'Liukin' over 'Liukina'. I forget why-perhaps someone else here knows. I love to hear her speak in her native Russian! So rare.
faeryquene 2 years ago
@faeryquene Based on the way the reporters referred to her, it's quite possible her official Russian name (she has dual citizenship) is Anastasia Liukina. But in the US, since her dad's last name is Liukin, I guess hers has to be too.

@Dariagreat11 do you know her patronymic name? i'm too lazy to look up her father's name. also, as i'm sure you know, nastia is a nickname for anastasia.
yuliaadreevna 1 year ago
@Dariagreat11 In the past Nastia has said that yes, in Russia she's Anastasia Valeryevna Liukina, but in the US she's just Nastia Liukin :)

Harmin87 2 years ago
I agree on certain aspects because gymnastics is an extremely beautiful sport, but when you win, the eyes of everyone turn to see the country and the coaches because they have done something that took a gymnast to a glorious moment.
morenodelaorilla 2 years ago
Ok, well then look at the fact that Nastia was born in Moscow, trained by her dad a former Soviet Union medallist, and then training under Romanian coach Bela Karolyi who trained Nadia Comaneci to perfect 10's in Montreal.
So in essence you have a Russian-Born gymnast, trained by her Soviet Union dad, under the coaching of a Romanian and yet she is American?
That's why I hate nationalism. Sport transcends country's because we are all part of the world. I hate nationalism.
Harmin87 2 years ago 3
Nastia was not coached by Bela Karolyi. Where did you ever hear that? Karolyi has been retired several years now also.
faeryquene 2 years ago
Why are people saying that she doesn't speak Russian well because she has an accent? That doesn't make any sense.
EB3140 2 years ago 3
i think its cool if you can speak russian. i mean, its a difficult language! my bff also immigrated out of russia, she was a bit younger then nastia was, but my bff speak very well russian! i think its really cool to speak that kinda language =)
and i just love nastia liukin in every way XD
sexiigurll123 2 years ago
The point I'm trying to make is that Nastia has lived her all her life, grew up her and I'm sure feels more American than anything else. Its ridiculous to say that she isn't American, just because she immigrated her when she was 2.
bekalc 2 years ago
Nobody really knows how she feels about herself but her!!!!
And MY point is that...IT DOESN'T REALYY MATTER!!!!
She's a gymnast...regardless of what country she is representing...I don't care if she feels MORE American than Russian...just as long as it doesn't affect her gymnastics... :D
soberanis100 2 years ago
I think too when you consider all that the Liukin's are doing for the sport of gymanstics in this country. It's horrific to say their daughter "is unworthy to be on the team." They've had over 30 people on the national team from WOGA. At least two of the men, on today's announced national team trained there until college.
Nastia has been in the States all her life. And you know what more so than Nastia who only has a few years back. The Russians would love to have Valeri coaching there.
bekalc 2 years ago
Nastia is an American citizen who has lived in America most of her life. Russians will tell you that her Russian isn't very good, actually. It's got an accent. Although it would get better if she lived in Russia.
Also I want to point out that Nastia's father and other former Soviet gymnasts and coaches have done a lot for American gymanstics. Carly Patterson, for example (American born girl  trained at their gym) There's another American "born" girl training at their gym.
bekalc 2 years ago
Damn, they speak fast. It would take an English speaker 10 minutes to say all that!
rocketsfan05 2 years ago 5
AYYYYxYO 2 years ago
Her nationality doesn't really matter...but some people pay more attention to it than to her gymnastics.
soberanis100 2 years ago
i agree i mean lots of gymnasts around the world imigrated ti different countrys take jana beiger for example, kim bui and oksana chusovitina they are all from different countrys and moved to the other nationalitys so i have no idea what so ever why other people are throwing it all on nastia when lots of gymnasts have done it :) :(

That's the sad reality...

LMA629 2 years ago
The only reason I posted this video was because I wanted to share the fact that she speaks Russian which I find really COOL to NASTIA'S FANS, regarless of whether or not she has an accent.
So if you can't post anything else but bad comments about her nationality or her accent I will just simply delete them...
soberanis100 2 years ago
And hosnestly I COULDN'T care any less if she feels more American than Russian or Russian than American, because that's really not the main point in GYMNASTICS. Yes, bringing honor to the nation you represent is important but not as important as doing it as a result of your hard work, determination and LOVE for the sport you do.
soberanis100 2 years ago
Okay, lets get this issue of Nastia cleared up.
Yes, she is Russian, and she feels Russian as WELL as American. In an report I read about he
